Man the lady playing Trunchbull does a very good job. When she asked if Matilda said no to her I got chills
That’s Emma Thompson
Emma Thompson one of the greatest actor i love her
That would be Dame Emma Thompson.
The wonderful Oscar-winning Emma Thompson. ❤️ She’s also Nanny McPhee, Captain Amelia from Treasure Planet, and Professor Trelawney from Harry Potter. ^-^
It's Emma Thompson
SO NICE when a movie adaptation of a musical is still treated like a musical. the full productions! the choreo! the costumes! the whimsy!! part of me wishes for a proshot but this looks so good so far!! im excited
I’m not drawn to film adaptations often. But this has changed in the last two years with the Prom, In The Heights, West Side Story, Tick Tick Boom and 13
YES! So many movie adaptations of stage musicals are adapted by people who don't understand or like theater and then the movies are like they're trying to make them less of a musical so they're more palatable to people who aren't already into theater, alienating both demographics in the process
@@manuelorozco7760 such good examples! In the Heights was such a beautifully done film, the remake of West Side Story (with actual Hispanic actors in it) was incredible. I love when a movie musical has the same magical level of performance quality to it as the stage shows they’re often adapted from. Nothing quite matches live theatre, but they’re definitely getting the idea that movie musicals are best made for people who love musicals, rather than watering them down to try to pull in people who don’t.
@@andreaxxxedge Thank you! I wasn’t a fan of 13 though. And I skipped Dear Evan Hansen because the stage version was good enough for me and the Pandemic didn’t make its release last year to be the right place and time. Before I saw Wicked live, I was already into the movie versions of the King & I and the Sound of Music.
That’s literally how it always goes
This movie looks incredible. Emma Thompson as Ms. Trunchbull is so good and scary at the same time, and I’m even liking the song remixes throughout the trailer!
its a musical
I didn't even realize it was her, she's amazing in almost everything she does
I also actually don't mind they went with the different approach and made ms honey black. Now sure I would have loved it if they went they original way the book was wrote but I still like this change
Wow she’s playing another villain? I mean she was great in Cruella so I’m very interested for this one.
Yes❤
I’m so glad they FINALLY made a movie of that legendary musical! Not only did they keep all the songs, but the essence of the stage performance.
they didn't keep all the songs, they got rid of 2 of mys honey's, loud (and rudolpho isnt here at all) and telly (michael isnt here either) and got rid of bruce's parts in when i grow up
I watched this movie today on Netflix and I was in tears. Absolutely beautiful soundtrack and story
Emma Thompson's range continues impress on each and every project she does. she is truly an incredible actor
💯
Right? We watched this last night (and LOVED it BTW) and my kids couldn't believe it when I told them Miss Trunchbull was the same actor who played Professor Trelawney.
Omg, Emma Thompson is Miss Trunchbull.
Of course she's brilliant ! she's a 2 time academy award winner !!
Actress NOT Actor. Actor is a reference to male where Actress is referring to female. When you dining, you wouldn't call a waitress by saying "waiter", because 'WAITRESS' implies a female server. Proper English is important 👌
THIS IS INCREDIBLE, I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT
"we are revolting children living in revolting times" is a kind of song that Roald Dahl would definitely write in his books, SIMPLY MARVELOUS
I'm glad they have a black actress to play Miss honey black lives matter people Trump should be impeached
Well, 'Revolting Rhymes' ended up on the front cover of one :P
I never got to see the musical when it was on Broadway, so I'm thrilled it's getting a film adaptation! The 90's film will always be close to my heart because I love it so much, but I'm excited to finally get to see the musical version! If this is done well, then I'll have two film adaptations of the book that I love!
Also, this is no more an adaptation of the 90's movie than Hook is an adaptation of Disney's Peter Pan, or Webber's musical of Phantom of the Opera is an adaptation of the 1930's silent film. They're simply two separate ways of adapting a book, and have no relation to each other otherwise.
I’ve never seen it on stage either and I’ve only seen the 90’s movie once. But I’m open to a new take
Looks so much better then the Broadway version
Hook might not be the best comparison because that's more like a sequel to the book than an adaption of the book.
@@QuibbleTrouble Good point, I've never watched Hook so I assumed it was an alternate-universe adaptation rather than a sequel.
@@RavenStarMedia It's a great movie, would highly recommend giving it a watch.
I love that they are remaking this story based off the musical, which in turn relates to the original movie. I watched the movie so many times and I'm loving the new interpretation of the story. And the songs, choreography, and sets look so cool.
I’m always mind-blown at the transformations Emma Thompson goes through for her roles! Can’t wait to catch this on Netflix.
Ooo, I’m excited to see how they adapt “When I Grow Up” and “School Song” into this! Seeing the musical live, those two scenes/songs brought me goosebumps for how well they were portrayed on stage!!
I saw a local youth theatre production of Matilda, and "When I Grow Up" saw the children bringing mirror frames onstage, singing into the mirrors (facing the audience). Then, completely out of the blue, they turned the mirrors and stood in profile to the audience, and the adults from the production team (who were otherwise not part of the cast) came on to be their reflections as they imagined themselves as grown-ups. I knew many of these kids and adults, and the real-life relationships they had. Seeing how they were paired off genuinely brought tears to my eyes in an instant. I would love to see something like this in the movie; I think it would work very well.
@@TheatreJosh24601 that's an incredibly clever way to incorporate the adult school kid actors into the song
@@TheatreJosh24601 wow that’s actually such a cool interpretation of the song!
I can not WAIT to hear school song!!
@nothing. Hmm, are you thinking of "Revolting Children", per chance? There's a separate song called "School Song" that uses the alphabet really creatively throughout its lyrics! Both are great songs, though!
My mom and I were supposed to see this on stage years ago but she passed away before we had the chance and now this movie is coming out on December 25th witch is the anniversary of her passing. This was done so beautifully I'm in tears. I'm gonna watch this in memory of her
Sorry for your loss
@@manuelorozco7760 thank you. I miss here everyday.

It was a sign she was watching it with you
I love this musical so much. I saw the Melbourne production 9 times since I had to see all the different Matildas and their interpretations. I couldn't be more excited for this film, I'm already getting teary!
damn you love matilda

@@brightmacsworld8353 and ngl she makes Ms. Honey double the wholesome we got in the book
The choreography is absolutely incredible those kids did a good job and they are super talented! The kids performing in the show was by far my favorite parts of the show. I can’t wait to watch the show when it’s out!
I remember my mom would babysit this girl years ago and all she ever wanted to do was watch Matilda. Every. Single. Time.
that girl had good taste
Oh. My. GOD. The moment they sang the first bit of "Revolting Children" my eyes sprang tears. TRULY. Could not be more excited for this!!!

As a fan of the musical, I cannot wait to watch this 🤩
Yesss

Emma Thompson can do no wrong - she 100% commits to every character she plays and then some.
Why does everyone hate musicals??? I've loved them since I was like ten. Matilda is the best one I've seen recently, fell in love after two songs.
Who’s here because they’ve watched her reaction video when she was offered the part on her sister’s tiktok? Can’t wait to watch this sweet little girl ☺️❤
The scene where she holds the teacher's hand is just so spot on! This looks like it will be so good!
I read the book as a child. Also I saw the old movie with Mara, loved it, but felt like it was missing something; certain parts from the book. Seeing this musical out to film, it looks extremely promising!
I really love musicals and Matilda is like one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. Been waiting for this and 'The School for Good and Evil'.
I really hope they incorporate more of the librarians storyline from the play, it was one of the most enjoyable plot lines when I saw it on broadway
It’s so weird seeing this cast of actors for Matilda when the faces from the 1996 film are ingrained into my memory for life
Yeah I’m not sure how I feel about this one, I watched the 90’s one so many times, change is hard. 😂
Old
This seriously needs to be watched in movie theatre, TV screens just won’t do.
You damn of right
I saw this in the limited release here in the U.S. I couldn’t agree more. The songs, the emotional scenes….I was crying in theaters and I heard other people around me crying too 🥲
The children sound so amazing together. Waiting for this one.
Such a fantastic book, ROALD DAHL created such a unique literary landscape. I hope this lives up to the original.
Used to take my kid to this on Broadway a bunch of times (including the closing). Looking forward to watching this together (also, Tim Minchin's score is amazing)
I love this movie musical so much. It captures the magic of the stage show, but uses the medium of movies to enhance so many little moments and details.
I can't decide what's more impressive. Matilda making things fly with her mind or that kid eating that cake!
Very pumped for this movie!
I just watched this movie at the London Film Festival, it's so good! It makes you laugh and it makes you cry, in the best possible way. And there were a lot of children watching and they loved it too. Everyone should watch it, it really is such a beautiful movie, not to mention the incredible talent of the young actors. I cannot wait to hear the songs again, so good! I couldn't recommend it enough, I'm sure everybody will absolutely LOVE IT. Watch it everyone!
I have never seen the musical, but the novel was one of my favorites when I was growing up. And this captures the magic I felt in the book! Also the songs touched my heart, I actually cried a bit hearing “we are revolting children living in revolting times”. I don’t know why. But I just know I loved it.
I'm glad they have a black actress to play Miss honey black lives matter I hope they spread black actors everywhere everywhere
I was lucky enough to see this at London's BFI Film Fest and it was utterly delightful. Emma Thompson as The Trunchbull is both hilarious and terrifying. She aced it.
YAS. My students were major players in our district's musical last year. My trans boy was Trunchbull, my Freshman was Mrs. Wormwood, and so many more. This will make me cry because of THEM.
When my mom and I watched this, we weren't really into the first song. We almost stopped watching the movie after that. But we kept going. And it definitely got better as it went along. By the end, we were so glad we watched this. The ending was so beautiful that I actually cried. Now I wish I got to see this stage musical when I had the chance.
A Matilda musical is certainly a great concept. We all know Mara Wilson previously portrayed the character of Matilda, but now it’s time for new stars to shine and truly showcase their vocal talent.
It's not the first time it's been a musical! It was actually on Broadway a while back.
Yeah and Mara Wilson actually saw that musical
It was a hit Broadway musical probably about 10 years ago.
There was actually a girl at my dance studio that was in the ensemble on Broadway for like 6 months
You know the musical has existed for 12 years and has been highly successful on Broadway and the west end ? Won tons is awards including 7 Olivier awards and 7 Tony’s, it’s grossed $198,165,852 just in the US and is played
worldwide… hardly a concept
It's probably my favourite Roald Dahl book and this looks like an amazing adaptation. I'm very excited for it.
I've never heard any of the songs from this musical yet but damn that last song they were singing was catchy as hell! I can't wait to watch it!
I’ve only heard bits of it. Particularly Naughty
Go listen to "When I Grow Up." It makes me cry every time I hear it.
@@amandafrazier9724 it had the same effect on me when I was in the theatre in London. It made me feel like a kid again. I love Tim Minchin.
“Quiet” has made me ugly sob before
You'll love them!
I was lucky enough to see a local production of Matilda the musical and was absolutely amazed. As a HUGE fan of the 1996 movie I loved that the musical is closer to the book. To boot the songs are amazing. This movie looks incredible and I’m looking forward to watching it
I grew up on the original movie that Danny DeVito did in the 90s and I must say this looks really amazing they used all new characters to play Matilda, Ms Trunchbull, Ms Honey and The Wormwoods which is dope I can't wait to see it but the woman who plays Trunchbull is spot on I thought it was the original lady at first Lol.
I didn’t even know there was a Matilda musical and now we get another one on Netflix ? Awesome!
yes it was a west end broadway show, and it had one in NYC for sometime
This is that musical being adapted as a movie, but yeah.
The stage show was amazing so hopefully the movie can live up to it 🤞
Man, Emma Thompson is basically unrecognizable here. Took me like half the trailer to even realize that it was her.
Same
I didn't even know that was her until just now after reading the comments.
Emma Thompson really gives that same reflection to Pam Feris’s Trunchbull
Favorite moments:
1. Revolting Children
2. School song
3. When I Grow Up
4. All Trunchbull songs
5. Bruce
6. Quiet
7. The ending song (which I believe is new!)
The kids are so talented I just cant stop singing praises to them! 👏
The ending song is still holding my hand
With all this hype about the musical on Netflix, Matilda deserves a Broadway revival
This is lovely brings back the cute childhood memories
Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey is everything, she has such "kind" and "motherly" features, idk if that makes sense but she's perfect for the role!
no she isn't miss honey is white.
She looks sweet and wonderful as Miss Honey should be.
@@dadon6055 For the record, so was Lavender in the book but who cares? Lashana Lynch can clearly play the part. Spoilers just in case:
And before you ask in the musical, Trunchbull is Miss Honey's stepsister so they don't have to biologically be the same race. Not to mention biracial and multiracial biological siblings are common. Even identical twins with the same parents of two different ethnicities and skin color can be born with one having a fairer pigmentation and one having darker.)
@@julieporter7805 I grew up with the book.. first they change the witches characters to a black kid and his black grandmother now miss honey is black.. sorry but Roald Dahl was white and he wrote about white characters because he was white.. imagine if we took some black author and changed all his characters to white people and made it into a movie.. it's just not right.. respect the source material it's getting ridiculous maybe black people need to write more books or something so you don't have to steal white peoples ideas and change the characters to be more inclusive..even the little mermaid... written by a dude in very white Denmark is now a black character.. just stop it..please stop it. If we did this to black characters and changed them too white I would be equally pissed off I grew up with these stories I want to enjoy them as they were.. make new stories if you want black characters.
@@dadon6055 when we do y'all still get mad so you might as well cry about it because it's happening.
Everyone’s talking about Trunchbull but I’m really excited to see “Loud” and “Quiet” in this.
loud was unfortunately cut they massively shrunk mr. & ms. wormwood roles because of time
@@denman2991 Are- are you serious? Dude that makes me so sad. That song was needed in there. However, the entire plot line with Mrs Wormwoods Zumba guy or whatever was really stupid so. You win some you lose some
Revolting Children is my favorite song in the musical, and it sounds like they’re absolutely slaying it here! This looks great!
For me it's the School Song and in the clip I saw they absolutely killed it.
This is my second favorite musical, and after memorizing the soundtrack, seeing it on Broadway, and then at the walnut theater twice, I'm super excited to see this come to screen. It looks incredible!!
I'm excited to see this too :) what's your favourite musical?
JUST 2 MONTHS LEFT! IM SO EXCITED I WANT TO WATCH THIS NOW!
Matilda is childhood for all 90s kids.💖
I only saw it once when I was 21
I had a foster parent who was just like the Trunchbull. She even tried to financially control me as an adult like Miss Honey.
The 1996 version of Matilda will always hold a special place in my heart, but this actually looks like a fun adaptation (I’m aware this isn’t a remake of the 1996 version).
Watched it the other weekend and WOW, I’m so happy they did the musical justice! I remember seeing it on Broadway 6 years ago and let me tell you, it was FANTASTIC and SO unforgettable! Still obsessed with the music to this day! So happy it’s getting the recognition it deserves💕 Petition to revive Matilda on Broadway?!😜
Wow. The comments are amazing. I just looked through many of them and not once found a negative comment. Guess it shows just how much the musical is loved.
I never got to see it myself, but this looks great!
Love to see Tim Minchin's name on this. Hopefully, it finally gets eyes on how genius he is!
Gotta love Emma Thompson. She puts in her all in every character she portrays.
Thank god for top comments because the recent comments are trash. Looks great. I’ve never seen the musical but the song in this trailer already touched my heart. Very excited!
I'm sorry, but 1996 Matilda is still the Goat.🥺
I've never seen the stage musical, but the Netflix movie was fantastic. The child performers were all so incredibly talented. I loved the diversity in the casting. Emma Thompson is a goddess--i swear this actress can turn into anyone. I didn't expect to enjoy it this much. A fantastic addition to Netflix's catalogue.
Wow. I’m already so impressed with what they’ve done with this show in adapting it to film. I can’t wait for this movie. Emma Thompson is incredible.
I can not wait for this to come out in December!!! One of my favorites. This is such a classic.
Matilda was my childhood. Im so excited to watch this adaptation
I love that they are doing a remake of the theatrical musical and not the 1996 film cause that GEM of a film was on repeat every week growing up.
I usually do not watch Musicals. This was so good! The children was on point! You can tell they worked so hard on their parts. The songs was even enjoyable! The story line was great. It brought back childhood memories. ❤😍😊
You know, I've never seen a single musical in my life, but this actually "Sounds" really good. And doesn't look like a bad remake of Matilda at all

So excited for this! From the trailer, it seems that they've adapted elements from the musical and it's translated well for the screen yayyy
It looks cool to see that Emma Thompson plays villains, from The Baroness to Ms Trunchbull
Watched it last night. No joke, film’s amazing! In the first minute Inwas already laughing at “punch you in the face” 😂
This trailer EXCEEDED my expectations! The fantasy scenes are cinematic, stunning and beautiful! 🙂 And the scenes between Matilda and Ms. Honey were so emotional. And for those wondering, this is based on the London Musical production, not the first film adaption. And for those who didn’t know….Matilda was originally a book lol.
Literal tears. Matilda is my favorite musical ever, and this trailer has me sobbing. My theater group (who's putting on Matilda) sent me this, and I am in awe. I cannot wait. Best trailer I've ever seen, I hope the film is just as amazing.
I'm glad they have a black actress to play Miss honey black lives matter people everywhere like blackness black actresses everywhere everything
I saw it last night in theaters it was awesome, I feel it really did well because of the continuity with the director and choreographer coming from the broadway production to help adapt to the big screen. There are certainly a couple of little things that irked me that I will not disclose as not to spoil but I would give this film a 4/5!
The book "Matilda" and the musical was always part of my childhood :,) I'm so glad they made this into a movie

So, as an American that grew up on the Danny DeVito version I have to say I always LOVED that version. I was only 7 when it came out. When my nieces were young I even made them a double chocolate cake to eat while watching it for the first time(for obvious reasons). Anyway, with that being said I LOVED this film! It is a British story and I firmly believe cultures are better at telling their own stories. I love, love, loved it! Such a talented group of children. Incredible choreography and Emma Thompson is an absolute gem. That’s in general; obviously. She’s a monster in this role 😜
This movie was so great and I love the music. I have two of the songs from it and constant replay today. Very fun very wholesome.

I don't know if this will give me hate but I want to say one thing. I think someone else should have been Ms.Honey. As in the novel, she's described as a "lovely pale oval madonna face with blue eyes and her hair was light-brown."
Racist comments never fail on youtube.
Same. forcing black people into roles is not helping, I tell you. In my country, people sigh when they see things like this (Characters that were not black and now they're black for inclusivity and no other reason)
@@I_WANT_MY_SLAW I am not trying to be racist. It's just that when movie adaptations get some things about characters wrong, it just makes me mad. That's it. I love Lashana Lynch here, I don't mind anything about it.
