    Great vidoe, Had a cast with same line this morning on my salmon club river and on my 7/8 weight 10' rod it handled beautifully, a director had a cast with my rod also and said im getting one of those. Casts great in the wind. I use it not to spey cast as i can do that with any wf line, it's the river i fish and i love this line.

    If i may add, fly line sits on factory spool for quite some time when new to when angler fishes and might find it bit springy when new, very easy fix. After putting line on reel get two chairs in kitchen 8 foot apart and if like me you have the old school ones with a small barrel on the top, just get an elastic band or a loop of braid, pass that through front loop and put that over chair barrel and walk up one chair then the other, then back again till the head of fly line is out of reel, put reel with brake slightly tightened and set reel on table. Leave for 1 hour, job done. Remember 90 ft of fly line is on a 2 inch to 4 inch spool when new. Fly line now will be factory straight. I also bought this fly line in 4 wt, 5wt, 6wt, 7wt and 8 wt for different rods i own and use. The original (1st one, old stock)single hand spey 3D i got not the new line so can't speak on that.

    Thanks for this review. Recently purchased the "elite" version which I think is basicslly the same line in that the head length and grains are similar iirc.I was concerned with casting lighter flies but hearing you say you cast dries and wet flies gives me confidence I didn't buy a line suited for streamers only.

    Thanks for doing this great review in such an informative, matter-of-fact, non-BS/marketing fashion!
    Now that I'm retired, I spend most of my summers at my cottage on a salmon river in New Brunswick, Canada. We have been invaded by striped bass over the past half dozen years, and like all the salmon fisherman here, I am greatly perturbed by their voracious appetite for parr and smolts. But I'll confess - catching several 25-35+ inch stripers per hour on a fly, minutes from my door (spring and fall) is a nice change from the odd grilse here and there. So, my question is, will this line cast a 5-6 inch Lefty's Deceiver?
    Here's another confession. I'm in my 70's, and after many, many decades of salmon fishing, I only learned how to decently double-haul last summer. This year's project will be attempting to "master" the single-handed Spey cast. I hope this line will ease the process. And I hope I can get my hands on one! The local shops only have the floating version, not the 3-D. You were wise to stock up.
    Thanks again!

      Thanks for the comment, Stephen! I've fished New Brunswick a number of times, and have written about the striper issue -- a curse or a blessing, depending on who you talk to, but I tend to fall more into the former category given what they're doing to the salmon population. But to your question: Yes, it can throw a fairly large fly. I have used it to throw leeches before, so that seems roughly comparable. I wish you all the best with your single hand Spey -- once mastered, it's hard to go back!

    Hey Ben, good job on the review for this product, I would say it is probably the top one that I’ve found.
    I am looking to buy this for my salmon and trout setup as well. I understand you mention it can get down about a foot or so, but what if I need to get the fly/streamer pattern down 6-7 feet? Would this line work well with sink tips or sinking leaders? If I added a T11 sink tip to the abs of this line, would it be easy to turnover? Haven’t been able to find much information on this topic.
    Thanks and keep the videos coming!

    • @flyfishnewengland
      @flyfishnewengland  3 года назад

      Thanks, Kevin -- glad you liked the review! I only ever try to get my fly down that deep with a double handed rod and under high water conditions, so I honestly don't know from experience. If I were to venture a guess, I would say that this would help with the transition to the sink tip, of course, but anything of that density will be hard to turn over by default -- I'm not sure there's any line that will make throwing T11 dreamy, if that makes sense? It's just the nature of the venture: hucking T11 is just that -- hucking, in my opinion. It's very different than Spey casting a floating line. No judgement meant by the comparison, either. Just a statement of fact!

    I will use the Rio 3d line in Gaspe in 2019. What length leader do you use a This line? Do you use a sinking leader? (Versileader). Or do you use a standard tapered leader? Is 12 pound leader sufficiently strong? I once played monster salmon on 8 lb. That was not wise. The F/h/i Rio line seems right based on your remarks and my limited experience. Best.

    • @flyfishnewengland
      @flyfishnewengland  6 лет назад

      You could use any you mention, but I use either a short tapered leader or a straight mono leader. Both have worked. I have also fought and landed salmon on tippet as low as 6 lbs.

    Great review. Just curious if the line is powerfull enough to throw polyleaders (not mow tips, but polyleaders like airflo etc with sink density) with salmon flies/ small streamers? Considering it on my spools for 9ft 5 and 7 wt applications.

      @flyfishnewengland  4 года назад

      You know, it's a good question... I've never actually used poly leaders with this line. It's not a super fat taper, but I have been able to throw big black leeches with it, so you might be able to! Let me know how to make out...

      @@flyfishnewengland hi! Been a year since I wrote, but; the line works great with polyleaders (tried airflo) have it now on my 9,6 7 zephrus and my 5wt rod. I'm not sponsored, but this is perfect for small river fishing in Norway after salmon (no more tangles on thin shooting line)... the 5wt works also as an allround trout line, if the fish are not spooky, and of course on small salmon up to 3kg.. its rare to see innovativions that are actually innovations in fly fishing industry nowadays....

    Great review Ben! I fish out in Colorado and Wyoming and have gotten into streamer fishing lately. I typically use a five weight for most of my fishing but have found I need a heavier rod to throw some of the bigger articulated streamers on some of the bigger rivers. For this I use my 8wt. Admittedly this is overkill. While I can get good distance on the cast I feel like I don't get any fight out of the fish using such a heavy rod. Would this line allow me to spey cast heavier streamers a good distance say 20-25 yards while I continue to use my regular 5 wt?

    • @flyfishnewengland
      @flyfishnewengland  6 лет назад

      Good question! I have used it cast large bombers, but not heavy streamers. The taper is a gradual one, not at all a Skagit-like line, so I would not be able to recommend it for that simply because I haven't tried it. But I will this spring and can let you know! Otherwise, as I said, this line is truly fantastic.

    thanks for the tip. I wish I was one of those guys who had to suffer landing a grilse On an 8 wt. oh what a pain to overpower a poor grilse. ! Lol. I will fish this line in the gaspe in 2019. What you say makes sense to me. drift that fly in the zone. However, when I throw dries (10% of time for me) i think I'd use an integrated floating line . I don't understand how you fish a bomber with a 3d sink tip. Best, jh

    • @flyfishnewengland
      @flyfishnewengland  6 лет назад

      JH: Completely agree that an integrated floating line is the best approach. I happened to be on the river without one, and had a salmon rising in front of me that wouldn't take a wet. So I tried standing downstream, and casting up river with a short drift, and it worked. So, in a pinch, it's possible with this line, but definitely not the best way to go! Good luck on the Gaspe next summer!

    You mentioned throwing dries, did you throw them on the 3D? The intermediate tip didn’t pull them down?

    • @flyfishnewengland
      @flyfishnewengland  4 года назад

      I've done it when I found a fish and after trying everything else, I tried throwing a dry -- it floated long enough with this line and a long leader to give the fish a look. Would I recommend it for that, though? No -- just saying, you can make it work in a pinch!

    Thanks for posting this review Ben! Do you have any recommendations regarding leader setup(s) with the 3D? I'm assuming a shorter run (e.g. 4-6 feet) of 12-20 lb fluorocarbon attached via a perfection loop would suffice for salmon/steelhead. Just wondering what has worked well for you?

    • @flyfishnewengland
      @flyfishnewengland  7 лет назад

      Mark: Sorry for the slow response -- I was up in Canada chasing Atlantic salmon for a week plus. Just back to my desk... As to leaders, I've found this to be pretty versatile -- it's not like a super short Skagit head or something that typically needs a short leader given the large flies you're throwing. I fished this line in shallower wader, with a long leader (10' or so) and it turned over nicely. Typically, I fish tapered mono leaders for salmon -- either factory tapered or built on my own. Hope that helps!

      Will do, . . . I've already purchased a spool for my 9' 8wt based on your review (FishUSA is currently selling it for $69.99). I haven't had a chance to fish with it yet, but I went to a local pond last evening to cast it a bit. As you mentioned, a great line for single-handed spay and roll casting; I was also really surprised how well it performed with overhand casts. Heading out for salmon and steelhead later this week; I expect the line will work quite well. Thanks again for the recommendation.

    Only FLOATING lines are aloud in Quebec.

    • @flyfishnewengland
      @flyfishnewengland  3 года назад

      Hi Richard: I'm afraid that is not accurate. The regs specifically say that silk lines must be unweighted and that lines cannot be metal core, which they define as "fly fishing line which, when it is firmly folded and released, remains folded." Furthermore, their definition of unweighted line is "a fly fishing line to which no external weight is attached." By these standards, triple density lines fall well within the regulations. Thanks for commenting.

  • @ricksmith3571

    This line is intended for nymph rigs. Over hand casting is not that smooth or fun. This line WILL NOT spey cast streamers. Wet flies yes but streamers def not and when I say a streamer I mean a 4 inch bunny leech not some miniature crap. Big streamers catch big predatory fish!

    • @flyfishnewengland
      @flyfishnewengland  6 лет назад

      Rick: Thanks for commenting. However, I disagree -- it's not just meant for nymph rigs, as you say. Both myself and others I fish with have used it very effectively for Atlantic salmon. I personally have used it to throw everything from small wets to large leeches. Tight lines, Ben

    • @Talos353
      @Talos353 5 лет назад

      @@flyfishnewengland Actually it's not a line designed with nymphing in mind at all. It is designed for swinging wet flies.. And to the 4 inch bunny leech flies mentioned above; many lines will struggle with a big watersucking fly like that. But, oversized flies like that are mostly only used by streamerfishing and skagitloving americans. Dedicated lines have been designed for that purpose, like the outbound short and the big nasty. As an Atlantic salmon fisherman from Norway, I agree with you Ben in that this is the perfect line for this application!

      @@Talos353 Glad you agree it's perfect for salmon! I will note that I have thrown large, albeit unweighted leaches with the 8 wt version of this, and found it to manage just fine. Are Skagit heads better for that sort of thing? Sure. But this will do it as well.
