The movie is also about arrested development, Abe is so weird cause he not only was a kid detective, he still is. The trauma of the kidnapping and failing to solve it basically stunts his growth. That's why he's so childish throughout the movie, the last shot of him crying with the title on top is basically the director reminding us that Abe is still a kid detective.
The message of the movie IMHO is more about arrested development, the kid detective could never really grow up because he felt guilty about not solving the gracie case, once he finally solved it he was able to move on with his life and become more "adult" like. The ironic part is gracie will always be kid because she had her childhood taken away. I think he cries because he realized that fact and he really didn't save her. He will be able to move on and grow as a person but gracie essentially won't
What I find disturbing...maybe more disappointing than disturbing, is that his relationship with his parents still is strained ans even cold. I am a senior gay man, never had children, never will, but I could not sit opposite of someone having an emotional breakdown and not move over to that person, reach out a hand or put an arm around his or her shoulder and definitely not ask, "What's wrong?" like his mother did. And don't get me started on his father with the dumbfuck...um, dumbstruck look on his face.
