Why NEPAL needs a NEW CAPITAL CITY?

  • Nepal's current capital city of Kathmandu is facing serious challenges that are impeding the country's progress. Kathmandu's population has grown rapidly in recent decades, straining the city's infrastructure and resources. Traffic congestion, pollution, overcrowding and rising housing costs have become the norm. The city's vulnerability to natural disasters like earthquakes further illustrate the need for a new, more sustainable capital. A new capital city could be better designed to meet Nepal's needs for the 21st century and beyond. It could provide an opportunity for economic growth beyond tourism and alleviate some of the pressures facing Kathmandu. While changing a capital city is a complex endeavor, the current problems afflicting Kathmandu strongly suggest that Nepal should seriously consider this option to help build a more prosperous and livable nation for future generations. So, is it time Nepal adopts a new Capital City?

I'm from Kathmandu and my opinion is that
Major cities like Biratnagar, Damak, Itahari, Dharan Janakpur, Birganj, Hetauda, Bharatpur, Butwal, Nepalgunj, Dang, Birendranagar, Mahendranagar and Dhangadhi should have good national level health education and employment facilities so that people will not have need to move to Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur or Pokhara. If we make a "Vision 2100" plan we can achieve a lot in 20 years.

I have been contemplating this issue extensively. It is always beneficial for a country to have a city of significant scale. There is an entire book on the agglomeration effect called 'Urban China.' It highlights how 80% of the Chinese economy originates from urban regions and how the agglomeration effect contributes to high economic growth.
If we examine any major city in India, we can observe that their economy consistently grows by an average of 10% over a decade. I have personally conducted extensive studies on this topic, and I always envision Nepal having a city of scale that can compete with other modern cities in South Asia in terms of finance, technology, education, energy, medical and research and development over the years.
However, considering the current statistics, it seems that more than 15% of the national population already resides in the Kathmandu valley, including both permanent and temporary populations. Therefore, constructing another city of scale may not be feasible for Nepal. Moreover, we also observe that the population of Kathmandu has already exceeded its capacity.
Developing another capital in a central location of the country may pose additional challenges and result in further concentration of the Nepalese population in the Bagmati province.
In my opinion, a better approach would be to develop three parallel cities that provide capital-like facilities in the East (Greater Birat region), Central (Bharatpur and nearby areas), and West (Surkhet Valley/ Birendranagar-Kohalpur). These cities can be specialized in specific products/services, similar to how Bangalore specializes in IT, Mumbai in finance, Chennai-Coimbatore in manufacturing, Delhi in the consumer industry, and so on in India. Similarly, Shanghai specializes in finance, Shenzhen in technology, and so on.
Kathmandu could be developed as a service sector hub, focusing on technology, finance, product design, biotechnology, and more, while accommodating the highest population. Bharatpur could be developed as a city of one-third the size of Kathmandu, specializing in heavy manufacturing industries such as automobile manufacturing, steel industry, medical industry, and more. The Greater Birat region could be half the size of Kathmandu, specializing in consumer manufacturing industries and serving as a trading city connected to Kolkata/Haldia port and Chittagong port. In the western region, Birendranagar (Surkhet Valley), comprising one-fourth the population size of Kathmandu, could be developed as another manufacturing industry hub, specializing in various industries and connected to Delhi through Mahendranagar and the ports of Gujarat via the Delhi-Mumbai corridor.
Pokhara could serve as the tourism capital of Nepal. Butwal-Bhairahawa, Birgunj-Simara, Janakpur-Bardibas, Hetauda, Dang Valley, Attariya-Dhangadi, etc could be developed as specialized small-scale cities (compared to Kathmandu) focusing on other products. For instance, Janakpur has the potential to become an agricultural-related manufacturing hub, while Butwal has the capability to advance in another product.
This approach would allow Nepal to benefit from the agglomeration effect, with specific industries clustered together alongside specialized institutions, universities, and professionals. Kathmandu Valley can still function as the capital of Nepal and the most developed market, while limiting its population around 11-12% of the national population, either residing permanently or temporarily.

this seems like most feasible plan from the prespective of overall benefits of country and it can be possible only if powerful business houses and political mafia's have vested interest in given location which I think they are already investing in land of given location so we can't say this wont be a reality if our economy and country will survive for next 10 years. But well lets see if our economy will survive this SHRAWAN. Our economy has already entered debt trap paying interest and running current structure is proving difficult forget development however India contributing half of global development in 2023 might attract foreign cash to Nepal due to our open border and similar culture with India. Personally I can see lot more value in being part of India (spiritual hub of India) like Taiwan of China but different. Whatever keyboard analysis ain't going to get us anyway .Have a good day , thank you for your analysis I would love to know more about your research since from what you described you have done detailed study and it might prove pretty useful in long term investment plan.

Thank you for your positive comments. One might be wondering about the ratio of population size I introduced in my writing. According to some research, a healthy economy should have cities with populations following a harmonic sequence. In the USA, cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix all follow a similar harmonic sequence. If you observe the population ratios, they follow the same pattern, and this approach is regarded as the most scientific way to distribute human populations in urban agglomerations.

Major cities can be developed as economic hubs to control the population inflow to Kathmandu valley. Proper implementation of the federal system also helps to erase the necessity of migration to Kathmandu. But it might create a security threat if the capital city is shifted too close to the border, so it makes sense to maintain Kathmandu as the capital city.

Best possible city to establish could be the places around somehwere Banepa-Dhulikhel, near 30 km proximity around Pokhara or while East Nepal areas could be a great fit.

In my opinion, shifting the capital of Nepal is a good idea but I don't think it's a good idea to shift it in the eastern part of Nepal cause most of the eastern parts of the country are already developed. So shifting capital there will bring problems for our future generations. Instead, we can plan it towards the western part of the country except for Pokhara as it is also an already developed and developing city. It might even need a lot more than the estimated budget to shift the capital towards the western part but it will be beneficial to the country as well as to people in those places. As it will increase the literacy rate, health facilities, economic growth, and standard of people living in those rural areas.
Wherever the capital is going to be located I just hope problem will be solved as quick as possible by the government without harming nature and planning sustainable development for upcoming future generations.

That's why if it is moved it shouldn't be to rural areas but newly developed places. None of which are in western Nepal. It would also help the non-indigenous people who are crowding and destroying greenery of Kathmandu.

From an economic standpoint, concentrating the government and administrative functions in a single location creates imbalances in regional development. Many regions outside Kathmandu lack adequate infrastructure and economic opportunities, leading to rural-urban migration. Establishing a new capital in a strategically selected region can stimulate economic growth in that area and promote more equitable development across the country

Many good facilities are in Kathmandu. Many much infrastructures for government offices are concentrated in Kathmandu. Recently, from collection of business tax and rent tax, Lalitpur ward offices are able to construct their own Ward Offices: Lalitpur Ward no. 2, 3, 4 and some are in process of constructing their own building. Shifting capital city to other city requires construction of Buildings to provide government services. I hope capital city transfers to other city which will decrease land and housing prices and do some good to environment. Quick transportation means from Kathmandu to and fro major cities will enhance economies like in Japan. Imagine if you can come to Kathmandu from Chitwan within 15 minutes why anyone want to rent a building in Kathmandu for work. Instead of transferring capital city at once, Nepal can do at one step at a time like transferring judiciary body to another city and look for feedback.

If there is a need for expanding urban areas in Nepal, one option could be to consider the possibility of adding or acquiring land from neighboring districts. This approach has been undertaken in some cases to accommodate population growth and urban development. However, it is important to approach such decisions carefully and consider the potential implications:
    1. Social and Cultural Impact: Expanding urban areas by adding or acquiring land from other districts may affect the social fabric and cultural identity of the affected communities. It is crucial to involve local communities in the decision-making process and ensure that their concerns and interests are taken into account.
    2. Infrastructure and Services: Expanding urban areas requires adequate infrastructure and services, including transportation networks, utilities, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions. The availability and accessibility of these resources should be carefully planned and implemented to support the expanded population and avoid straining existing infrastructure.
    3. Environmental Considerations: Land acquisition or addition for urban expansion can have environmental impacts. It may involve deforestation, habitat loss, or disruption of ecosystems. It is essential to conduct thorough environmental assessments and adopt measures to minimize environmental degradation, promote sustainable land use practices, and protect natural resources.
    4. Governance and Management: Effective governance and management are crucial for successful urban expansion. It is important to have clear policies, regulations, and enforcement mechanisms in place to ensure transparent land acquisition processes, efficient urban planning, and sustainable development practices.
    5. Balanced Regional Development: While urban expansion can help address the challenges of overcrowding and limited resources in certain areas, it is equally important to promote balanced regional development. This involves ensuring that development efforts are not concentrated in a few urban centers but are distributed across different regions, aiming to reduce regional disparities and promote inclusive growth.
Any decision regarding the expansion of urban areas and acquiring land from other districts should be based on a comprehensive analysis of the social, economic, environmental, and cultural factors involved. It requires close collaboration among government authorities, local communities, and other stakeholders to ensure that the process is fair, inclusive, and sustainable.

Just because other developing countries are moving their capitals doesn't mean we have to join in on the bandwagon. Not only that, we must take in account of cost and natural impact. Can a country that has barely managed to keep it's foreign reserves afloat really afford it?
Not to mention the large incurring investments that have been made in the valley to improve its condition?
Also the points you've mentioned above don't really add up. You're taking into consideration that the problems faced in the current capital won't require solving if the capital is moved.
You've also considered that people from Kathmandu would simply immigrate to the new capital without hesitation, even if they do so, will they receive employment, education or health services that are still in developing stages. I don't see any reason on why private business and corporations would see any benefit in leaving their valuable region of operations in Kathmandu and set up large scale projects without capital or profit security.
It's actually just cheaper if we can improve services and governance in all the metropolitan and sub metropolitans along with rapid improvement of our existing infrastructure for transportation

It's more necessary than not considering the migration pattern and no Nepali people can't do shit, they're still heavily brainwashed by state politics. Also culture of Indian subcontinent is conformal, if we see through history changes have had to be induced which is all the more imperative reason why government should proactively shift the capital and the bheda netas following the pattern of appeasement from the time of Ranas and Kings will follow. Making sure plebians will follow the trend. The elites will also pour in money considering the investment returns, with china trying to break through the state politics, I'm quite certain this will also serve as a great interest for the chinese to balance out the control of Indians.
More youths that have little cultural bondings to their place of origin will migrate to the new capital fueling it with better entrepreneurship opportunities. This step is actually one of the needed step for Nepal to gain momentum in development standards.

To those why we need new capital, reasons are:
    1. Kathmandu is congested, over dependency for almost everything in Kathmandu.
    2. Housing problem with sky rocketed house price.
    3. Lesser priorities to other region.
    4. Pollution.
    5. When we have need capital in Southern belt of Nepal it will increase connectivity.
Lesser dependency. This is also bring focus to other cities.
Logistic issues required for development in terai region will be lesser compared to Kathmandu.
    High accessibility.
In my view, Chitwan or anywhere in southern belt somewhere in middle of southern belt will suit for another capital. Moreover, this new capital can be connected to all other 5 major cities of southern belt. Also, high speed road network and rail network should be priority and when we do this, inner cities from Himalayan and hilly region needs to connected to southern belt cities with high speed road services. And train network connection north to south needs to be achieved within next 10-15 years. This will set us for double digit economic growth every year.

Also, I have an alternative idea. There are countries with multiple capital cities, South Africa for example. There's a way we can implement it as well. I don't really know the logistics of it all, but what if.
