Good video. You did great to get the whole race. What's up with Smile Happy? Does he usually act like that before his races?

He has been in his races this year. Maybe not this dramatic yet but you can see in his last two races, the Oaklawn Mile and Alysheba which I have uploaded on the channel, he left before the post parade like this to get him to relax. The gate crew learns with the horse so if his issue is the gate itself, the walking backwards may have been something new today to try and keep him relaxed. I unfortunately didn’t get any footage of them going up to the gate for the Alysheba because of where the gate was so don’t know if they did the same thing there. I did in the Oaklawn Mile and they didn’t back him up but you could see he was away from everyone.

@@apharoah12 thank you. That's very interesting. I'll go back and watch those two races.

I've never seen a horse that had to be backed up to the gate that far, yikes. Enjoyed your video, thanks.

It’s not unusual for him. He’s had similar antics in all his races this year, including when he won the Alysheba.

@@apharoah12 I had no clue. I was his groom as a 2 year old, he had and still has a ton of athleticism and raw talent, and his only quirk at that time was being unbelievably lazy. Could not leave him alone for 1 minute when I needed him or he’d lie down and I’d have to groom him all over again, and god forbid if I’d just done it and then he lies in shit as soon as I turn him loose. And by laziness I mean more that he just never took it seriously and didn’t ever use his body how he should. Stayed fat for the longest time and never broke a sweat, even while doing some intermediate baby things. Athletic, but never wanted to apply himself. But never all this. This is the first time I’m seeing him pre-race and it’s shocking for me to see all that. Kind of looks like a very obvious “no, I hate this job” if I’ve ever seen one lol. He never did like it but now he’s actually being clear. Shame

Well let's hope if he exhibits this again they'll go ahead and get him off to do something else. This was the most dramatic he's been this year, so hopefully he was just not feeling it that day.

@@apharoah12 He was quiet as a mouse when he finally did get in the gate, so it’s not even about the gate, he just doesn’t wanna do it lol. You can’t really train “will” back into a horse if he lost it or never had it to begin with, so I’m on team retire him if he puts up this kind of fight every time. If he was repeat G1 caliber then maybe I could see starting him regardless of antics, but he’s not quite there. Should get another job

That wasn’t his blanket it was a wet blanket to cool him down. They took it off by the time he got back down to the paddock
