Perfectly stated, my friend! She seemed to have no ego at all, offering herself as a transparent conduit for the composer's thoughts to be transmitted directly to the listener. Angelic is the word, all right.
Oh, heavenly days! I've listened to Anna Netrebko, Joyce DiDonato, Renee Fleming, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Jessye Norman (which had always been my favorite version) sing this song prior to hearing this and the studio recording from the same year. This is by far my new favorite rendition of the stunning song. Such grace, such control and she makes it sound so easy.
Yes Arleen ...I never forget your "Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben" (Matthew Passion) in Amsterdam Concert Gebouw... I never in my life was so touched🌈 See you back in heaven😘
I know! It's like she's lip syncing. It's all in the breath control and glottal closure. Masterful. I've never seen this in anyone except Julie Andrews. (Yes, I said Julie Andrews.)
I do not know why in the concerts, there is always someone who is coughing equal to a tuberculosis person and could cough lower or indoors. Arleen Auger was a " Angel " of music and sang with her soul associated with technical perfection in the voice she possessed and this song of Strauss in her voice makes me cry a lot and pity that she passed away very early. #RestInPeaceArleenAuger
What a profound interpretation that came from her heart. I loved the evenness of her soprano tone complemented by a poetic sound from the pianist. Indeed a magical combination.
Herrgott im Himmel! When I heard Jonas Kaufmann sing this live in 2011 at Zellerbach Hall at UC Berkeley, I thought I would never hear it so beautifully sung. Eyes closed, tears rolling down my cheeks. Jonas, get in line! Behind Arleen!
Do you also know Barbara Bonney singing this song? More tears...just beautiful. There is so much love coming from those singers. Just what I need right now ;-) Music is the healer!
Almost certain it is Irwin Gage. Two of the more celebrated recordings they have done are the one they did of Strauss & Wolf songs for CBS Masterworks and the subequent & stunning Wolf recording on Hyperion just before she succumed to cancer. His playing has always oozed humanity.
Indeed it is the pianist that sets the tone of the performance she can sing "nicely" because she doesn't have to give a moments thought to the accompaniment that is played so beautifully.
For heaven's sake, PLEASE IDENTIFY THE SUPERB PIANIST HERE! There would be no performance of this without him!!! How ignorant and disrespectful can you be?
Strauss...what a nasty way to treat singers. Having to creep gingerly into the song after the interminable 1 minute intro (1/4 of the piece). Most all singers--no matter how famous they are--sound like hell on those first tenuous notes. I think Arleen Auger does it better than almost anyone.
It's always odd to me to hear this Lied sung by a woman. The author of the poem wrote it as a love song one man sings to another, and I always have a man in my mind's eye when I hear it. Auger is lovely, but Fischer-Dieskau does for me.
I have yet to hear a bass-baritone who can approach his rich tone, musicality and ability to convey the emotion of the music to the listener. No one comes close! I would have loved to hear him in a quartet with Auger, Hunt Lieberson, and a tenor as yet to be determined. Any suggestions?
@@brookeggleston9314 I was always partial to Anthony Rolfe Johnson, but if we're talking ultimate Dream Team, the only one who fits the bill is Fritz Wunderlich.
That's my Aunt. She was given an incredible talent!
Dear Lord in heaven. This is absolutely gorgeous. Her voice is exquisite and the accompaniment is fantastic. Thank you for posting this.❤
Auger was like an angel sent down to give us God’s gift of music and then suddenly she was gone. You don’t know what you have until it’s gone.

So schön wie ihr Gesang ist der entspannt-glükliche Gesichtsausdruck.
The most beautiful and adequate performance of this piece I've ever heard. Thank you so much.

This îs by far the best version of this lied I have heard. I am thankful that we have it on RUclips!
Totaly agree...!!! Pavel
Auger was the Midas of Classical Music: everything she touched, she made into GOLD! RIP Arleen, you are missed!
She's barely moving her lips and yet her voice is so pure and ethereal sounding.
I know! It's like she's lip syncing. It's all in the breath control and glottal closure. Masterful. I've never seen this in anyone except Julie Andrews. (Yes, I said Julie Andrews.)
This beautiful and moving song is sung by the angels who receive the blessed at the portals of Paradise
Superb. Her voice just floats.
Unbelievable voice technique. 👏👏👏
After hearing this, I went running looking in my discotheque for her recording of the Chants d’Auvergne. What a pleasure!
Absolutely stunning. Marvelous singing from this great artist. So expressive and sincere. This is true art.
Oh my word sung so perfectly by a beautiful woman. Voice like an angel. Pianist wonderful accompanist.
Die schönste Version, die ich (bisher) kenne... in der reinsten Intonation und ohne irgendeinen aufgesetzten Ausdruck mit unglaublicher Atemführung.
What a lovely performance! just sung as it should be sung
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
How beautiful! One of my favorite songs ever, and she sings it beautifully.

Exquisite artistry.
Maravillosa voz, paraun precioso tema de ""strauss""".!!
Very pure, beautiful voice. RIP Arleen. You will always be fondly remembered. Pure GOLD!!
Quelle musicalité bravo
This is especially stunning when you consider it was a live performance. No do-overs. And still essentially perfect.
Oh
Astonishing technical skills wedded to great musicality.
This song is refreshment for the soul.
Oh my got. She is just perfect...
is there anything more beautiful than 1:50-2:10? What a marvelous interpreter, and great artist!
No, there isn't.
What a profound interpretation that came from her heart. I loved the evenness of her soprano tone complemented by a poetic sound from the pianist. Indeed a magical combination.
La belle version de toutes .magnifique
This sounds so much better in the higher key avoiding the muddy middle that puts one to sleep with this song.
Одно из лучших сопрано ХХ века
I call this a moment!
Perfection from both

So beautiful♡♡♡
Maravillosa Arleen y además hermosa. Te fuiste muy pronto
Her beautiful singing voice is out of this world,. and unrivaled, and indescribable, and outclassing
The ''Sie wieder einen in mittel dieser sonnen atmenden Erden'' in one breath and in this tempo is Olympic.
Wow... this is ethereal
Just one word: Perfecto!
Superb
Best version of this Lied, I ever heard. Thank you so much for posting!
I agree. So intimate and full of light.
Very beautiful! But the version of Gundula Janowitz is very beautiful too. Two of the greatest!
My favorite version is that of Lisa della Casa
❤️ Beautiful version!! 👏👏👏 I'm going to add it to my playlist that I have of this song in particular!! 😊
beautiful voice
Love it
Magnificent
My favorite version.
Thank you for this video! I cried.
perfection
magic
Emoção, Encanto e Arrebatamento. Grata.
Looking no further. I found the ultimate version.
as usual not a word about the pianist...imagine he was not there!
His accompaniment was lovely. You're right. Without his contribution, this Lied would would have no meaning.
Yes, it is Irwin. Sensitive, poetic playing.
I think the pianist was lovely.
Indeed it is the pianist that sets the tone of the performance she can sing "nicely" because she doesn't have to give a moments thought to the accompaniment that is played so beautifully.
Bravísima :-(
😃👍👍👍
The pijanist was very good! Tender playing as it should have been done.
Truly stunning piano artistry too! Who is the pianist?
Irwin Gage (Klavier)
@@yunshui Yes, I remember him as exceptional.
Where is the rest of this concert?? I am dying for the video of her singing “Freundliche vision” - it used to be on youtube.
STILL on YT (same concert)!
Flawless technique. Wonderful artistry. She makes it look easy. But Richard Strauss is murder to sing.
Рихард Штраус !
For heaven's sake, PLEASE IDENTIFY THE SUPERB PIANIST HERE! There would be no performance of this without him!!! How ignorant and disrespectful can you be?
Irwin Gage, R.I.P.
Accompanist? Date recorded?
Irwin Gage.
Kiel, 1988.
I put it on 1.25 playback speed
Unbelievably poignant.
Blimey, it's Margaret Thatcher! Gerald Moore and Janet Baker are the masters of this one!

She certainly does
A few get it... not too many. Margaret Price is one ruclips.net/video/nkZANIlGXu4/видео.html
As usual no credit for the pianist, without whose part this piece would be nothing. So annoying.
Irwin Gage (Klavier)

@@brookeggleston9314 Matthias Goerne actually beats Dietrich, his teacher, and he is a bass-baritone. But I don't think he sings this lied.
