Copper Associated Liver Disease in Dogs is called Wilson's Disease in people. So if you google that it may help give you more information about the disease. However, understanding dogs cannot eat everything people can. I live in Michigan and thanks to the help of Blue Peal Vet Hospital (specialized vet care, aka: expensive) working with my Vet at Pierson Veterinary Hospital in Davison MI, my dog Chance is doing well. His ALT liver levels was well over 137 and currently it is at 90, which is within the normal range, but slightly toward the higher side of normal. He is currently on a special diet of Royal Canin Hepatic Formula Dry,several medications and supplements. The medication and supplements are not cheap, but I'm grateful my dog is now doing better, so it was worth it. I love this video because I have been looking for recipes I could make to supplement my dog's diet as a sort of treat, to occasionally mix in his food. Thank you so much for your post!
Glad your dog chance is improving 🥳. While researching I’m thinking, when a human gets diagnosed with liver or kidney issues, the first step is change the diet, add supplements & exercise. We don’t get put on a for profit dry processed diet. On the contrary the more natural, the better, healthier for you it will be, & the body starts to self correct. 🙌🏼

My dog was diagnose with chronic liver disease, and had high liver enzymes. With the cane food, that she hates, she lowered significantly the enzymes. they did a biopsy, which i dont recommend, probably aspiration n the liver is less invasive and much cheaper. Do not allow to place a feeding tube, its quite bad because you need to clean it an it gets grab by anything, meaning she ripped of and the vet has to fix. I placed pumpkin on the cane food and oil, because its so bad taste. I cook chicken skinless with bone and placed the broth with the cane food. I cook noodles on the broth, and after the eats cane food she has 2 table spoon with noodles. Brake the food at least 4 times a day so the liver has a brake. I added daily BCAA, branched aminoacids, and phospatidilcoline, milk thistle, vitamin e and c, and denamarin,l as treats i toast bread, that for sandwich, and brake it in small pieces she loves them. I also placed hunny on the bread. No more thant a tea spoon per day. She can not eat eggs or cottage cheese, also she cant eat rice, because she vomits. With all am doing she is happy, no vomits and very little lethargic during the day. Forgot CBD oil its a big help in nausea among other benefits...

I thought oatmeal was high in purine which was something to stay away from as dogs with liver disease are prone to stones. I like the idea of boiling eggs though and cottage cheese seems to be a winner.
I use brown rice instead of oatmeal. Also use ground turkey 99% fat free and add broccoli, green beans salt free or peas, and carrots. Put all in crackpot and I have enough for several days. And I add milk thistle. I use as a topper to Hill’s Prescription Diet for liver. Hoping next blood work his ènzymes will be lower. 0

Just found out my small dog has liver disease. Could I use sweet potato for pumpkin? I read somewhere that boil chicken liver is good for dogs with liver disease. What is your opinion? Thanks for the recipe and your value opinions.
Many dogs are thought to have have a struggling liver because commercial dog food provides too much copper-- Clear out the excess copper and liver heals or at least that is the logical hypothesis. The fact is that commercial dog food is causing widespread excess copper storage in the liver and we know that is a fact because liver biopsy data collected over the past 5 decades proves that. That all said, liver friendly, homemade diets strive to use ingredients that are lower in copper-- Not devoid but on the lower side. Sweet potato is much higher in copper content than pumpkin. Therefore, stick with the pumpkin.
What about fish oils with raised liver enzymes? I thought no amino acids for this but you mentioned adding fish oil? My dog is 15 year's old and suffering tick fever. Kidneys are very much improved but liver enzymes are now raised, query a side effect of doxycycline. So omega 3 is ok for kidneys but omega 6 is harmful. For liver probs, no amino acids, low fat and higher protein if they are loosing protein through their blood or urine.
I give my dogs sweet potatoes, pumpkin, chayote and sawdust mix beef/pork and i boiled them together a d sometimes ill mix oatmeal once on a while instead of dry dogvfood
Hi there I was wondering if you had any idea using high-quality ingredients what a diet like this cost per serving. Also I was wondering if you switch to a diet like this will this give them loose stools and if so will there be an adjustment time to it and how long do you give it? I have always been told that the pumpkin firms the stool but everytime I try it with my one dog at seems to give her the runs.
Introducing a new food is best done by putting 1/4 new food 3/4 of the food you normally use day 1. 50/50 day 2. 75/25 day 3 and then all new food 4th day. That should reduce stomach upset/loose stool.
Rice, from what I’ve heard isn’t the best bc dogs it feeds bad bacteria and I think maybe the starch, so even when feeding a bland diet, use pure canned pumpkin or sweet potatoes. I heard kefir is good (look up the amount. I think a little, bit a lot, maybe half or full teaspoon per meal? Can’t remember so look it up). Kefir has lots of probiotics naturally in it. And heard good things of the brand Answers’ raw goat milk. Supposed to be incredibly healthy. Haven’t tried it yet
Can you make a large batch and freeze some? My vet said that this is a good recipe for my dogs but he does not recommend the eggs. So I will be leaving that out. As we know each dog like people are different.
The egg provides essential vitamins and fatty acids. I see you posted this 3 years ago but still good for people currently reading this thread to understand that your vet is dead wrong in telling you to just leave out the egg without any thought to suitable substitution for the missing nutrients. Just because someone has a degree in veterinary medicine does not mean they are smart-- Most vets are students who were really good at memorizing and following the leader and were easily brainwashed by the big Pharma controlled vet programs. Original, critical thought and asking questions are the signs of a superior intellect. I'm convinced that vet schools are purposely screening for sheep who can memorize and be pawns to sell pharmaceuticals and kibble.
@@treasuretrovel3816 In my experience with vets since 2006, I can agree with the above! Only 2 vets in that time frame were willing to consider foods outside the crap “food” they push.
Specialist diets such as this have to weight the pros & cons of the dog eating without getting sick & surviving without side effects over complete nutrition. The prescription diet for example is prescription exactly because it need to be fed under a vets guidance because it's not nutritionally complete. Check with your vet before adding any supplements as some will actively work against what you are trying to do. Which for the most part is make sure your dog gets enough protein without too much ammonia production.
Ok so this will probably never get seen haha but my dog was diagnosed with high liver enzymes. They then doubled so are even higher. They never mentioned liver disease. But do you think this food would help? I do know just from my brain that the less crap her liver has to deal with the better so I'm trying to cut out the dyes and stuff from normal dog food.
Yes, it will help. Find another vet if they didn't mention liver disease as a possibility with high live enzymes. Your dog should be checked for a shunt or some other liver disease. It is very important your dog be on low protein diet with any kind of liver disease from what I can summarize. Please get a new vet to take care of your little one.
Hi. My dog is facing the same problem. They didn’t mention liver disease or anything but we had to go see a specialist because he has high liver enzymes. What did you do?
@@rachelniznik9143 welll. Not gonna lie that dog died from liver failure so. . Now my current dog ALSO has elevated enzymes were giving milk thistle and hoping it was just a fluke 🙏
She seems to have good ideas but she’s not a veterinarian or nutritionist (veterinarians, most, know nothing of nutrition anyway), so I would always double check the recipe Accor sign to your dog’s issue. Some dogs can’t have dairy while others, like mine, can’t have eggs, and now I heard that many dogs out there are allergic to chicken. I think, from what I think I remember learning from Dr Becker, that if dogs are fed the same protein day after day, over the period of month (or years?) they can develop allergies or an aversion to the protein they are being continuously fed. So yeah, just always double and triple check everything. I really really like Dr Andrew Jones. He has a RUclips channel called veterinary secrets and he has tons of info on natural cures for several ailments. Check him out and good luck to you 👍
My Dog is having liver issues, her numbers are in the high 2,500 enzyme levels, even after IV treatment, getting her back home today, I hope this recipe can help her. If anyone knows how to get down her numbers please let me know, next week she will have an ultrasound done.
My vet had me start giving 200mg Sam-e on an empty stomach each day. After 2 months, it lowered her enzyme level but it was still just barely past the threshold of high. I'm keeping up with it and looking for other things that I can add.
Has anyone reading this ever had their vet give their dog Claro Otic Solution and then have them end up with liver issues or anemia? I think either my vet missed something or this med isn't as safe as they think it is, at least not for an elderly dog and there isn't a lot of information on it. Anyone familiar with this drug? She is a 12yr old bulldog & I don't know why they didn't recommend blood work first if this drug could cause issues. They are telling me her liver issues and anemia didn't happen from this medicine but she was walking, eating and playing and within 90 min of having that put in her ears she was deathly ill. If she had an underlying issue it could have been discovered by bloodwork. They told me she was doing well and acted like this med was safe at her appointment but when we went to leave, she didn't want to and I thought that was odd. She had never done that so I asked if she was okay and they said she was. She is doing a little better now. I had taken her to the vet to have a follow up for a skin infection and ear infection and she came out of that appointment and was very sick within 1.5 hours. They keep telling me the medicine has nothing to do with this. I think they missed something. Blood work wasn't even done until I had to suggest to them to do it. I don't understand. I feel like I failed her by bringing her to the vet. If anyone has had a similar experience with this medication, please let me know. I don't even know what to do at this point other than give her round the clock care like I have. She is doing better but she is on antibiotics and I don't know what will happen when they are done. The vet basically told me she was gonna die and to make her comfortable. Now she is walking better, playing and still isn't 100% but I am really unhappy. I gave the okay for that med but I did it because her doctor made it sound like a safer alternative to taking ketoconazole again for her skin which started to get red again after stopping that med. They told me it wouldn't be safe to take it daily again so she prescribed it to her on the weekend only but I never started it because they gave her the ear stuff that sent her into a near-death experience. Even calling the emergency vet everyone tried telling me she was just tired when I called them in a panic. Next day I brought her in to her vet and they did x-rays, not bloodwork and then sent here home. The next morning I called and told them I needed her to come in for bloodwork and had asked for a quote the prior day so I knew the cost. I am not wealthy, not even middle-class so I was able to raise $90 of the $285 it cost for that bloodwork and her meds and now I have to figure out how to do it all over again so I can get her bloodwork again and see if anything has changed. I feel this shouldn't have happened. I am not aa veterinarian but it seemed ridiculous for them not to suggest bloodwork. I trusted that they would make the best choices for my pet and I feel that was a huge mistake. Trying this diet here is making a difference and she doesn't want dog food anyway.
I thought that the liver breaks down the fat and if it's not working well, then you SHOULDN'T BE FEEDING Any FAT at all, ESPECIALLY NOT HIGH FAT! This same recipe is made by a doctor but everything has to be FAT FREE! 0% fat cottage cheese; take all the fat and skin off of the chicken AND use breast if possible. Also if the dog has serious liver damage even REMOVING THE YOLK from egg is recommended!! Never heard anyone say that a high fat diet should be consumed! That's crazy. High fat diet will harm a good working liver! It is Def NOT RECOMMENDED for anyone or any animal WITH LIVER DISEASE! YOU WILL HARM WHAT'S LEFT WORKING!
@@thedude2897 low fat, not high fat! That's my point. A dog with kidney failure won't survive anyways and it won't be because they aren't getting any fat, because their liver is failing. Dahhhh.

Thank you for sharing your recipe. However, I'm a bit baffled as to why any form of dairy would be given to a dog. Seems to be an American recommendation after looking at liver disease diets across the web. I know y'all are obsessed with cheese as a nation :D :D but maybe leave the canines out of it.

My dog Diesel was just confirmed to have liver failure due to his stage 4 lymphoma today. Trying to buy an extra 1 to 3 weeks. If you have revised this diet since 5 years ago or have any other recommendations for a dog with cancer and a bad liver please let me know.
Milk Thistle brought most of my dog’s liver enzymes back to normal range. And brought the remaining 2 enzymes way down. Still working on it.
What is milk thistle? Where do I get that? My dog has mass inside of his liver and his enzymes are outrageously high. He can’t have surgery due to his heart condition. I m desperate to help him
@@katrinabagnova6191 I get Nature’s Answer Milk Thistle liquid extract from Amazon. At first I gave my 50lb dog 1/4 tsp twice daily for 5 months-4000 mg. I just took one month break and started him up again on a 1/4 tsp daily.

My girl has liver disease & I am frantically trying to find a healthy food for her that she will actually eat & like. She’s a very finicky eater. The milk thistle her Vet prescribed for her is like trying to combat an army. She will not have any part of it. Her little blue Denamarin pill she’ll spit out over & over again no matter what I hide it in! Just trying to get my baby healthy. 😢 I hope this recipe will work!!
So glad I found you! I have a 4 yr old Boxer, and her enzymes came back near 900. She is currently on antibiotics for Lepto, as we are waiting on blood results. Already had ct scan with no concerns! I'm hopeful the meds will work, as next is biopsy, which I'm hesitant about! She has no symptoms, just a finicky eater. She did have super low thyroid, but with that med, she is back to her sassy, normal self, and down 6lbs! I'm definitely going to talk with my vet about this diet, thank you sooooo much! Any additional information is helpful!

Good stuff! You do give her Denamarin on an empty stomach right? that's what I'm told to do for better absorption.
My dog liver was enlarged..can I give this food to my dog..it will not give any side effects..

It’s been a while since I did my research so I could be wrong on this, but I thought fat was supposed to be reduced in dogs with liver disease? I do notice that high fat meals upset her stomach. Maybe that is what made me think that.

My 10 year old girl has just been diagnosed with a fatty liver/ enlarged liver and only 40% of kidney function after a cruciate ligament repair. She's on a supplement for kidneys and liver my vet says she's not at the point of medication so we want to keep it this way and prevent further deterioration. I've been doing the rice and veggies and Hills liver support dry food in the morning. In the evening I give her Hills joint care because she also has hip dysplasia. with 2 table spoons of wet food which has not salt or copper. I am definitely going to make this recipe but do I still give her the dry food with this recipe please? Many thanks

Thank u so much... can u help me more to giving like this tips as my dog diagnos to liver desease his a beagle 14 yrs old
I thought oatmeal was high in purine which was something to stay away from as dogs with liver disease are prone to stones. I like the idea of boiling eggs though and cottage cheese seems to be a winner.
I woldnt give oatmeal..... I dont eat it myself !
A human doctor once said - oats should only be used for horses. That was very telling. 🤔
I tried your recipe today and Sam gobbled it down which I was concerned about since he is a picky eater. What do you think is a good timeframe to return to the vet for a blood test check-up?

Can you do a cushings disease diet recipe
My dog has Cushing's as well. I wonder if this recipe is good for that?
I would think it would be OK since bushings is tied to liver disease. My dog has both diagnosis
Cod liver oil is the one to avoid.

The fibre in the pumpkin will also help with loose stools.

Can I change up the recipe every once in a while with sweet potatoe and rice?? and perhaps some other kind of dairy??
Is it suitable for an adult French Mastiff?
What about vitamin and mineral supplements ?
Why? There are vitamins and minerals in the food you're cooking.
Adding milk thistle is a must you can find it on Amazon
Will this be good for my 8-year-old CHihuhua with only one kidney?

My vet had me start giving 200mg Sam-e on an empty stomach each day. After 2 months, it lowered her enzyme level but it was still just barely past the threshold of high. I'm keeping up with it and looking for other things that I can add.
Ooooh my god
Can you make this ahead and freeze it?
I'd like to know that as well. I have a 79 lb pitt/lab mix and need to make a batch ahead of time. How long does a batch last?
Please , write dawn the ingredients,.

Dog's can't survive without fat. Theres a minimum they have to have. If you feed no fat you're actually causing more harm.
@@thedude2897 low fat, not high fat! That's my point. A dog with kidney failure won't survive anyways and it won't be because they aren't getting any fat, because their liver is failing. Dahhhh.
