    I tend to consider Seiko as the definitive watch brand, because it has something for everybody: from Luxury Grand Seiko to cheap Seiko 5 series and anything in between, all the watch spectrum is covered.

    TGV, your original video on the seiko ripley a year ago not only introduced me to your incredible channel, but also horology altogether. It continues to be one of my all-time favorite horology vids, keep up the good work, and thanks for all you do.

    When I first saw this watch I really didn't like how it looked with the box on the side, but after seeing it over and over again I have slowly fallen in love with it. Great video as always TGV, keep up the great work and have a nice weekend!

    I love mine...you are totally right about the comfort. I find myself often reaching for it as my casual runabout. One negative I'd add is the quality of the pushers. They are cheap plastic and wobble a fair amount in the housing.
    Sizing the bracelet was an absolute nightmare. I almost sent it back, but I'm so happy I persevered.
    Great video as always...totally appreciated it as a fellow owner.

    I have the Black Ripley, SCED043, which looks a bit dressier with its black and gold aesthetic. If I were to pick the fifth 'hate', it wouldn't be the crown, but rather the 'floaty' pushers. They are just pressure fit onto the metal rods in the pusher box and have a lot of twist and play. I would have been happier with a more secure nestling of the pushers into the box. And if you look at old Bishop models for sale online, losing their pushers seems to be a common problem.

    Giugiaro did the BMW M1 and a number of Maserati models too and you can almost see a link between car and watch. Pininfarina, the epic Italian design firm, does a bit of watch design as well but of course are best known for their work with Ferrari. Enjoyable show TGV!

    I would like to get one of these someday. Having been an artist on an AvP game where I did the death animations, technically I have killed many aliens. Feel like this watch would suit me.
    I do think it would be more a treat if it was titanium instead of steel. Not sure if that would provide the magnetic shielding... which to be fair is very important when doing battle in a terraforming colony's' overloading reactor core. Lots of lightning and electromagnetic nonsense in those places.

    Pros: really great legibility
    Cons: the claps is easily discolored due to the matte finish (I wish that there was an invisible film protector that one could use).
    On the design side, nowadays the case could have been a bit larger, especially compared to the pushers' extension.
    Still, very happy to own one.

    thanks for this follow up video.
    i really like this watch. really wished i knew about it when it first released.. or rather re-released.
    there have been a several variations on the execution of this watch style, but this iconic "Ripley" version with its particular execution is the definitive version to get, the story and history behind this watch design is best told with this particular execution.. but, unfortunately, as you noted, the price for one these days has gone up more than double.
    one could get the basic design in one of the other executions for a more affordable $400 range, but it's just not the same and frankly this version looks and plays the part best.
    the only details which I've noticed and not a fan of are the complicated bracelet design for sizing.. i guess one you've done it, the agony of dealing with it should never pop up again until you either sell it or have dramatic weight change.
    the other part(s) I'm not too keen on and wished they had designed better are the chronograph push buttons. 1) they are plastic and not metal. 2) they seem unsettlelingly loose with a bit of wobble.. not quite as secure as I'd hope for such a piece. and, from the backside, i dont like how there's a gap between the button and the case "box". you can see the little piston/cylinder exposed that it's attached to and it is skinny compared to the size of the button.
    lastly, i agree, it's a shame they never included any lume on the dial or the hands or markers. it would really have made this piece even cooler.
    not to upset the investment value of this timepiecr, but I certainly wouldn't mind yet another reissue of this watch with some of these and your gripes resolved in an updated version.
    thanks, again, for the video

    I have a 037, PVD version of the Ripley...also bought one year ago. I still like and I agree with its plus and minus, in particular in my case I am not particularly bothered but the lack of lume but IMO a more functional crown like the original one would have been welcome. Also the 24h sundial is useful just to set the day, a 12 hours chrono counter would have made it perfect.

  • @MrVitamincpp
    @MrVitamincpp 7 лет назад +2

    Tristano, I really appreciate your fascination with Aliens movie and that SCED035 watch. I own the SCED037 black version, and I like it very much. There are several things that diminish my admirations though. First, it is too small for my taste. Yes, my Oris John Coltrane is even smaller, but it is a dress watch. The Ripley wears even smaller than what its 40mm size would suggest. Second, I hate how Seiko flooded the market with at least 5 additional slightly different versions. They are basically the same watch and are all "limited" to 3000 pieces. Third, I don't think the placement of chrono buttons is very practical. I suppose it is just a design decision.When you try to start the chronograph, the natural position of your thumb is just on the stop button. You must be careful not to pinch them together. And forth, I find the level of materials and execution not particularly high. Too many negatives on my side, so probably I must stress once again that I really like the watch, it is a fun piece and for me it has sentimental value too.

    Hey TGV,
    I'm a huge fan. I've been stuck with this question for quite a while now - Since I'm a little tight on money (I'm 17 and you can't get a job in India before college which is 21 at least) I wanted to know if I should get a Seiko 5 or a Sistem 51?! I'm into watch collecting and I have a couple of great time pieces (a 45 years old Seiko 5, my granddad's) and I'd like to have one of the cheaper mechanical ones just for the story behind them.
    Loved the video.

    The 7A28 movement is partly why the original Ripley was great. This watch has the same movement as a cheap Chinese Panerai. What is the point of having a 24 hour dial that cannot be adjusted to show another time zone, or at least to be useful in some way, like as an hour counter for the chronograph? It is easy to tell if it is am or pm or not, you open your eyes and look to see if is night or day. You don't need a 24 hour dial (moving in lockstep with the hour hand) to tell you if it is day or night. The repllica is like a bad remake of a great movie.

    The pusher design is very functional, but I'm not a fan of that extremely simplified design, basically two boxes and a jar. I don't loathe it though. As for the movies, Alien is a space horror art masterpiece, whereas Aliens is just another action film. The only really good bit is "They mostly come at night. Mostly." It doesn't really add anything to Alien, it's just more of the same but without the suspence. Cameron's next movie, Abyss, is much better. Original, interesting and has a point. "So raise your hand if you think that was a Russian water tentacle". Brilliant :-) You feel Camerons love and respect of deep waters.

    *Can someone advise me*
    I have one of these Aliens watches and when I reset the second hand timer(my first chronograph) it will go the the right position. But gravity will pull the hand forward two seconds and that's where it stays.... Is my watch broken or something?

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  7 лет назад +1

      WHAAAAT!!! You need to fix that asap, but I recommend re-watching the original, maybe having a maratho session over a weekend with all 4! As for the 65, perhaps. I would love to but I have to be rather selective as time is limited but, I did cover the Carl Brashaer bronze version, which I thought was quite special due to it's historic significance, did you catch that one?

    TGV love what you do, but there is no long o in Bulova look up one of their ads on RUclips. Also check with Federico on the pronunciation as well. I guess I'm showing my age younger reviewers of Bulova referred to it as Bul o va. I look forward to your next installment.

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  7 лет назад

      Not a problem, in fact we discussed this in an old video with Federico. Forgive me, I am British, we tend to pronounce things differently, to-ma-toe, to-may-toe etc. You will just have to get used to it ;-)
