i love them too and really a lot, but this is heavy metal with sabbathian references and 80s nwobhm too. I still love them also if they're absolutely not genre defying.
Can’t wait for the Hushed and grim one, These are so awesome to watch and I’m so happy we get them, would be awesome if other bands did this for every album.
Man that would be great, just saw them on their most recent tour and they all looked like they’re having a lot of fun which was great to see, obviously they still like each other too which is awesome. Good signs for the future imo.
Still my favourite Mastodon album, simply because it's enwrapped with way more intense themes than anything they ever done. It's concept of a specific story being unfolded is very ambitious, I like how they use everything they could from Joseph Campbell to Indian mythology The music in this is just Mastodon's insanity meeting with prog. It also represents Mastodon's great methamorphosis which evolved them into what Mastodon now is And also, This Mortal Soil is the best thing they ever composed!
I'm a bit of a latecomer to Mastodon. Have loved em for about 2 years. I just got enough Crack the Skye and Leviathan to try a new album, Blood Mountain. It's incredible, I'll probably be obsessed with just it for another year.
That’s kinda the beautiful thing about mastodon, especially at this point. There’s so many songs and different eras to jump into. There are some songs I over looked for years only to find my self becoming obsessed with them later on. Blood mountain was one I slept on, and it’s on repeat in my car right now

33:20 I love seeing Troy jamming out to Scott Kelly's part on Crystal Skull. You can see it in his face, just how blown away he is. It had to have been maximum level surreal, having that legend do vocals on your stuff. He had already done Aqua Dementia of course but clearly it's not something that gets old lol.
I can’t remember what video it was but Bran had said “Hopefully eventually we’ll have so many albums that we can just bring Scott on tour with us and do a set of all his songs” they all really look up to those guys and Mastodon is definitely the gateway into Neurosis and others, for sure.
