I grew up in Winthrop, now connected to Deer Island, so I'm very familiar with the island. The waterway that used to separate the island from Winthrop, Shirley Gut, was treacherous, and if anyone tried to escape drowning was a very possible outcome. In winter, it is very cold and often windy. In a Nor'easter, it is an extremely hostile environment, even today. Even coming from the area, I was never taught the history of this place until I learned it from Native elders. That's wrong and should be remedied.
I feel them too, Millie. They walk with me as well.
The site is still waiting for the memorial.
