      @@melodiefrances3898 That's a myth. Animals might run slower zig-zagging than in a straight line, but so do people. Bears can hit 45km/hr, and they can run long distances. Keep in mind they can zig-zag fast enough to catch Elk. Climbing a tree can work against grizzlies, but you need to climb high enough that they can't reach you, and you need to climb fast. Many Grizzlies if determined enough can climb trees. The best thing to do is avoid bad situations. Store food, and garbage properly, don't stare them down, don't run, make noise so you don't surprise them (they'll usually smell you first), if you come across a dead animal leave the area immediately. Don't chase them down for photo-ops. Carry bear spray (it's statistically far better than a gun). If a grizzly/coastal brown bear attacks, play dead. If a black bear attacks, fight back.

    • @TheBearGuyCanada

      He wasn't a ranger, he was the bear aversion specialist....and that was me. The two young bears, one was 5 years old, the other two..... were siblings, would get under the fence into the restricted area close to people and the building. I would get them out and out a little further into the meadow. Knowing how the female would react, I waited for her to chase her brother.

      Thanks for tuning in. These videos do take a little time to put together, especially when a lot of the material is spanned over a decade. As for retiring, I wish, but even retired would mean I'd volunteer within bear programs. I did resign from a particular program due to in house politics and the wrong management. Since than I have done bear work with oil and gas companies in northen Alberta, and spent the last two seasons in the arctic. I am heading to BC in a few short weeks for an assignment but Ideally I'd like to get back with a program with a ton of bear activity, that's when I'm happiest and at my best.

      @@robertwaid3579 , being in this type of field you have to actually love it more than life. Truth be told the research I did was actually for myself. I really wanted to expand my role and apply the data i had but those doors remained closed. My actual role was a bear aversion specialist meaning I 'd get the bears going and out of red zones with lots of human activity. Once you work with these bears for a while they learn what you want from them and really become easy to deal with. Once there is that mutual respect, there's very little rubber slugs or bean bags being used. I really keyed on their behavior and that allowed me to get results no one else could. I even recall this very bear in this video bluff charging me one day and it was 100% my fault. I had guided him to an open meadow void of people and I had a new officer wanting to see where he ended up. We walked to the edge of the meadow and he reacted, as to say, "I listened, I am in a good spot.....you're not to be here!" It was myself that was in the wrong because I wanted to satisfy the officer's curiosity by showing him.

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  2 года назад +3

      Rubber bullets, bean bags, chalk balls from a paintball gun, noise makers like a bangers and screamers. But truth be told, once you work with the same bear, it doesn't take long for them to understand what is wanted. Many people think bear aversion is driving around shooting bears with rubber. An individual bear might be hit a few times early in the season and that's pretty much it. Once they get older than maybe once to none, you can get the results by just sternly talking to them.

    I only see humans behaving badly: putting eartags and radio collars on wild animals, chasing along side them in automobiles. The bears were just being bears.

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  2 года назад +4

      It was a play on words. The problem is people try to humanize the title and shouldn't, and just enjoy the video and not complain, it is entirely about bears being bears amongst each other. The second part is because of people doing exactly that, chasing bears dawn to dusk for pictures and harassing the wildlife without a break. The collars allow staff to know where the bears roughly are, to help them navigate through human activity, and essentially back the people off. If people weren't doing silly things than none of them would be collared, but people are entitled and behave badly especially when they think no one is there. The ear tags, personally I hate them and would prefer the buttons once again, but someone made a decision it would deter professional photographers from sitting five meters off and following them for hours at a time. So the long and short of it is.....did you at least enjoy the video?
