Oh man the nostalgia, I had the previous model with 486 in it I think in 95, in 96 I started working in a PC store so by the time this system came out I already upgraded to a PC I built at work, started with Pentium 133, ended with Pentium 266 MMX and double the RAM.
Back in 98-99 I was working on Y2k projects. One site had Compaq Deskpros. I recall them having a solenoid that locked the cases. The BIOs was software based, and existed on the hard drive in a hidden partition.
I was wondering what happened to you, welcome back! $1,200 was actually a pretty sweet deal for that combo back then. The speakers sound quite nice, and I noticed that comp is running Win98 first edition---that's somewhat rare, most people upgraded to SE. As for what to do with it, well, you probably know my answer already; leave it original lol
Haha I love to keep the systems as original as possible. Keeps the nostalgia with them - If I want better, I just switch to another purpose built system :)
The system is saying it has 32MB RAM because there is 16MB onboard the motherboard. Spec sheet claims the max RAM is 48MB when a 32MB stick is installed instead of the 16MB stick.
Even when real life happens it's like there are magnets on you cos you still end up finding pieces of nostalgic 90's computing metal. Nice to hear you doing well! 😉
The patchy yellowing is more likely due to UV damage from being near a window with plenty of sunlight. My guess is the rear was facing a window and the sides only receiving sunlight 50% of the time. The yellowing on the front edges is probably due to seasonal angle of the sun and oils from hands touching it to adjust it against the angle of the sun at each end of the day. Just my theory anyway 🙂
I bought my girlfriend at the time (early 1998) a very similar Compaq. It was an alright computer. She mainly used it for college so she didn't do much heavily lifting with it. AOL was probably the most demanding application. But it was definitely a cost cutters dream. Limited even for the time.

Back in my high school days, we managed to recover a few of the discarded desktops we had on the older lab and we ended up creating a "rec room" in one of the rooms of the older building. Unfortunatly, it didn't last long after a teacher snitched me and the kids that visited our secret club and we had to torn everthing down

As always a really good video, and always look forward to your videos. Edit: I would change the IDE hard drive to a IDE to CF with an 8GB CF card and 3D print a mount for it to stick out of one of the card slots so you could run different OS'es on it. For example you could have the original Win 98 on an 8GB CF card, and then have other CF cards that you could use to try out retro Linux distros like early RedHat and others from the mid to late 1990's.
I had Compaq Presario 4128 bought in 96. it had the JBL speakers mounted at the side of the monitor. Specs were Pentium 133 Mhz, 16mb RAM, 1.2 Quantum Big Foot, 8x CD Rom. Great PC for its time.
Oh that Windows 98 startup sound.....whenever i power up my Xbox Series X it always reminds me of 98 (the new gen xbox uses 98's logon sound but it's remixed a little). I found a similar Compaq computer a few weeks ago too. It was sitting inside an abandoned building we had to clear out,still had the factory seal on it with the original configuration. After 24 years i got to be the first person to open it and give it some maintenance. He's an old grandpa computer but he still runs :)
I had that exact computer for years. I pushed it to its limit. It will actually take a 300 mhz k6/2 I had a CD burner and I want to say 96mb of ram running windows Me. The speakers sound better than they should
5:44 I got lucky with my PS2 Compaq keyboard. I used to work as IT for a very large insurance company and one day we were purging old hardware and I found a new in box PS2 Compaq keyboard. I use it for my secondary system plugged in a KVM switch. I ended up buying the matching mouse off of e-bay. 16:12 Telephone lines carry 50 volts DC on the ring burst. Pro Tip don't strip telephone wires with your teeth unless the wire is unhooked from the Dmark. 50 volts DC is a pretty good jolt especially getting it in the mouth, it does more than tingle like a 9 volt battery.
Phone lines always have -48VDC on them, the path is open when on hook. The ringdown voltage is 100v, and it will absolutely make one uncomfortable when it hits you. The old phone system was common battery, meaning power was provided by the central office, that way a basic telephone doesn't have a power supply. In the central office we had lots of tools that were -48 powered, because there was access to that power just about everywhere, and it reduced the chance of 60hz hum from AC power getting transmitted into the lines.
My elementary school had two of these (the deskpro variant) in the library. They were the only windows PCs in the school and the only two computers that could get online.
I visited my parents this weekend and brought back a Dell XPS i7 system from 2011, I want to trick it out and present it as a retro pc/restoration video, but I feel like it’s still a little too new. The best part is that you have the entire system, keyboard and all. It is a beautiful system, these mid/late 90s PCs are the most nostalgic for me. My first real PC was a Micron P2 450 mhz, I’d love to find that system again.
Hey, a 2011 system is already 13 years old. Nothing wrong with fixing it up over the next couple of years so it is ready to be a retro system in 5 or more years time
I had this machine back in the day for my Junior year of Highschool. I got it in March of 1998. Same model number, but mine had an S3 Virge in it instead of a S3 trio. I have looked everywhere for my specific model and I cannot find any information on it. I remember we purchased it on sale from Office Depot for 799.99 with the monitor. 16MB of RAM, 2.1GB hard drive. My CD-rom drive I think was a 24x. I purchased the exact same model you have there on eBay a couple years ago. Love playing with it from time to time, but it's still strange that mine back in the day was exactly the same except for the integrated video.
Hardware back then was such a race and I often refer to it as the wild west of computing. Not a lot made sense as manufacturers were doing everything they could to get these systems out as quickly and cheaply as they could.

Just about everyone I knew had a Compaq in the 90s. I also hated when monitors used a built in video and and/or power cable. I had a CRT flat screen, 17 inch HP monitor which worked fine until it’s built in VGA cable got damaged from moving so I had no choice but to scrap it at the time.

That unyellowed on the back of the monitor seems like something kept that that part in the shadow. Like something was put on top with cables draping over the back. Or some kind of desk with shelved above the monitor with stuff hanging from the back. Oooh nice an AMD K6. Though a nice vibrating speaker next to a sensitive harddisk is not the best thing for it.
wasn't aware you were away, hope everything is going well... when I was young I was kindof a snob about these machines cause I built my own and although some were somewhat upgradeable, almost all had integrated graphics and audio that were inferior to what I would piece together myself, I would never suggest these systems to anyone, however in 1999 I started selling them at my local office depot and it was a toss-up between HP or Compaq for what I would suggest to customers... the yellowing almost looks like smoker tar to me, but it does say a church name as the owner so maybe not....

You did a good job on the video! This video also reminds me that I have an old Dell Dimension Desktop from 98 or 99. I think it ran Windows 98 and I believe it had a pretty old Intel Celeron CPU. Unsure about anything else tho😂 if you ever wanted to see it or show it on the channel I would be glad to somehow get it to you, but I’d have to find it first..
cant go wrong with ESFM this is a nice dos w9x machine. voodoo 1 or 2 in the pci slot and you have some 3d support. i cant quite tell but is the cap closest to edge and by the yellow coil bulging at the top?
It baffles me that only one of the speakers has a cabinet behind it, feels like missed potential. Definitely a weird and interesting little system with the air duct and such. Very cost-reduced.
Imagine how annoyed people were if they bought this Presario in 1997 and found out that they can't have a SoundBlaster Live that came out in 1998 and a decent Voodoo or decent networking at the same time with their system. That's I think where some started to really dislike OEMs for user unfriendly decisions.
To me those lines look like cables lie there for years in a sunny room. Maybe it was in a rack or something with cables running behind it, shading the sun?
It really depends. They come from all different sources and I am fortunate to have a lot of connections in those areas that help. :) I get them through donations, and some through buying them. The ones I buy I usually indicate that in the video :)
34:55 Didn't you spot any memory chips on the motherboard? That would line up with the 48 MB of max memory expansion indicated on the flyer (16 Mb integrated + a 32 Mb memory module in the single memory slot available). Which, by the way, it seems a bit too little for a machine of that era. I would have expected 128, or 64 at the barest minimum. The 32 Mb that it came with as standard feels quite typical for the era, though.
Family always comes first. Hope all is well with them. Also, they sure don't make cool-looking computers like that anymore. Nowadays it's all boring black and silver boxes. I noticed the computer has the first edition of Windows 98. You should update it to Windows 98 SE and give it Plus! 98 for a touch of class. 😊

@@TheRetroRecall i was an intel guy in the old days. Never heard of amd at all in the 90s or the 00s because all the PCs I ever owned was either p3, p4, celeron, core 2 quad or duo or haswell i5. After my i5 popped i discovered fx8350 for my first pc build just before ryzen 1st gen existed. Back then i could not find an affordable intel 8core in the mid 10s. But my experience is flipped when people say amd gets hot and pops. Every intel i have had for a year or less pops. But nowadays every amd i use pops now. So i dont really care what anyones thermal nightmares are with amd. Its 50v50 for me. But still... If only fx was an earlier project for the 90s that could have been an oversight... Im thankful for AMD fx for my first 8 core experience. The cpu lasted like 6 years until it popped for me. Thats the longest I've ever had a pc without dying on me. I've had 2 ryzens and they both popped under a year... That reminds me i still have my old dell dimension 4700 pcie p4 mb still stripped from the chassis some time ago. I miss win98se too much.
(1) Would be interested to see if... (2) You could load it from a plop floppy to boot from USB (3) Then load a copy of linux maybe puppy 19.03 (32bit)... might be too heavy.

I had a 5BW143, beautiful PC, I miss it, it was a great PC, the second one I got from my parents in 2000.

Where I live at thrift stores, they are never old 90s computers anywhere. All I find are monitors and mice and keyboards and that's it.

I double checked and it looked good? I mean I would have to take it out and use a meter to read it properly.

Those lines on the back are obviously cable shadows and I'd say the blotchy yellowing is due to curtains, a sheet or being inside a clear garbage bag.
Well, I only mention it as the lines are perfectly outlined. Usually cables tend to be wavy.
I'm jelly I have a Presario m2200 (basically the same but black) I WISH I have the matching monitor let alone the keyboard & mouse.
Yes was quite a lucky find and becoming more difficult every day to find decent hardware.
Imagine how annoyed people were if they bought this Presario in 1997 and found out that they can't have a SoundBlaster Live that came out in 1998 and a decent Voodoo or decent networking at the same time with their system. That's I think where some started to really dislike OEMs for user unfriendly decisions.
For sure. I mean tech was changing so quickly back then that if you waited a week there was always something newer. Much more exciting back then :)

It really depends. They come from all different sources and I am fortunate to have a lot of connections in those areas that help. :) I get them through donations, and some through buying them. The ones I buy I usually indicate that in the video :)
34:55 Didn't you spot any memory chips on the motherboard? That would line up with the 48 MB of max memory expansion indicated on the flyer (16 Mb integrated + a 32 Mb memory module in the single memory slot available). Which, by the way, it seems a bit too little for a machine of that era. I would have expected 128, or 64 at the barest minimum. The 32 Mb that it came with as standard feels quite typical for the era, though.

Also, they sure don't make cool-looking computers like that anymore. Nowadays it's all boring black and silver boxes. I noticed the computer has the first edition of Windows 98. You should update it to Windows 98 SE and give it Plus! 98 for a touch of class. 😊

Interesting. I never used AMD much back then as they tended to be underpowered and overheated compared to the intel CPUs.
@@TheRetroRecall i was an intel guy in the old days. Never heard of amd at all in the 90s or the 00s because all the PCs I ever owned was either p3, p4, celeron, core 2 quad or duo or haswell i5. After my i5 popped i discovered fx8350 for my first pc build just before ryzen 1st gen existed. Back then i could not find an affordable intel 8core in the mid 10s. But my experience is flipped when people say amd gets hot and pops. Every intel i have had for a year or less pops. But nowadays every amd i use pops now. So i dont really care what anyones thermal nightmares are with amd. Its 50v50 for me. But still... If only fx was an earlier project for the 90s that could have been an oversight... Im thankful for AMD fx for my first 8 core experience. The cpu lasted like 6 years until it popped for me. Thats the longest I've ever had a pc without dying on me. I've had 2 ryzens and they both popped under a year... That reminds me i still have my old dell dimension 4700 pcie p4 mb still stripped from the chassis some time ago. I miss win98se too much.
id be temped to swap CPU to a intel or get rod of the cooling hood and fit a CPU fan directly since AMD used to run extremely hot back in day

the white marks on the monitor may have been from the cables being on it, i can imagine maybe it was in storage or something and the cables where placed on top 🤔
Definitely possible. Just really perfect lines where I expected a cable to be slightly curved.
