My high school symphonic had prepared this piece for the end-of-year concert, and our longtime band director died unexpectedly a few weeks before we were set to perform. He was beloved by the students and staff, and it seemed so impossible to replace him, but we at least had an adjunct to oversee us rehearsing. We ended up dedicating our performance to our late director and his family with an open conductor’s stand, empty. I hope he enjoyed the sound of us working hard to perfect it in his memory. I still can’t listen to it fully without crying a little. Here’s to you, Mr. Looman 🎼
It was written for a conductor who was leaving the band she had been with for quite a while. That's why it's called Yesterday's Joy. It's kind of saying "remember all those good times, because this is goodbye".
I am in high school, and I recently moved away from my old school. This is the last piece my band performed before I left. For that, it will always have a special place in my heart.
We played this as our last piece at my final band concert my senior year. It was dedicated to all of us leaving and the joy of our past four years. Half of the seniors couldn’t play the entire thing because we were in tears. This piece will always hold a special place in my heart.
Played the drums on this with my friend back in the percussion section... She broke a drumstick during the awesome drums part. During the concert. I couldn't stop laughing.
I remember playing this as a first chair flute player in high school. They had me play the piccolo and I was so intimidated of being heard but the piccolo is like one of the main aspects of this song 🤣 I still tear up when I hear this song today. It holds as nostalgic place in my heart.
At our high school for graduation last year, we created orchestral parts for this song and combined it with the band. the result was one of the most epic memories I will cherish forever. by far my most favorite and most epic song I have ever played.
This is my personal fav celtic song. Played this in concert and marching band in high school and I love it. One of the hardest and most intricate songs I've ever played. Always lifts my spirits.
More than a decade after playing this in all state in Alaska, this remains one of the greatest pieces I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Absolutely beautiful.
i played flute for this song but the percussion and trumpets are so beautiful they made me cry.my clinician conductor was actually the one who asked Mr.Sam hazo to make a Scottish song for her retirement but he made it gaelic instead.good job everyone at the regional performance today.good luck with all state
Played this piece 14 years ago in band. Euphonium. One of my all time faves. Awesome to see all the newer comments on here of people who’ve played this and listened to it.
This song is my good luck charm. Freshman year I played it for tryouts. Made band librarian. Sophomore year played and made section leader, district honor band, and parish. Junior year played it and made band captain, district and state and parish honor band. Senior year played and made and made drum major, parish, district, & state honor band. Played for college and got accepted on the spot with scholarship. Yay me!!!
I played this in high school for our district band with our sister schools. This was one of my favorite songs that I performed. Such a beautiful and uplifting piece that never fails to send shivers down my spine
Bass Clarinet player here, and as an ex-flute, I’m jealous. I loved this piece so much. It was refreshing to be the foundation of a piece rather than the melody. Really a beautiful piece.
My high school's top band plays this piece for our final concert every year, and throughout it, every senior gets up and walks off stage leaving just the next year's ensemble. I'm a senior, and earlier this year we lost our bassoon player, a very good friend of mine since middle school, to suicide. His younger brother is going to fill in for him and as if this song didnt make me sob every time already, i know i will be a mess this time. I miss you Dani❤🎶
the thing I love about Sam hazo is everything. I did an honor winds program last year and he was the guest conductor. he was so much fun to learn from. his eyebrows control the volume. the higher they are the louder you play. but he is a good human. I need so ibuprofen and learned this on break but forgot. so he remembers this in the middle of a song. so he stops pulls out pills and everyone is confused why a man we met the day before is stopping practice to give a child drugs. it was truly remarkable
This piece always gave me goosebumps when we played it. Playing the 1st clarinet part, when we play the higher register melody, I just about cried because it was so beautiful. I take my hat off to you, Mr. Hazo! If I was wearing a hat..
How high does the first clarinet part go? We're playing this for band but I haven't gotten my part yet... The highest note I've ever had to play on clarinet is a G- the 3rd one, the one that's super screechy 😂 (it comes after the high C with only one finger, the thumb covering the high register key and the little key beside it on the underside of the clarinet lol)
We played this today right after our high school band instructor told us all he wouldn't be coming back to teach next year. You could feel so much emotion during those few minutes. :'( Especially since he told us about the meaning of this song just a couple weeks ago.
We did this my freshman year in the Symphonic band (I'm a senior now) and the director refuses to do it again. Either he doesn't like it, or we did bad and doesn't wanna go there again lol I played the 1st drum part. It's an amazing song.
I played this a year ago in 8th grade, and it was one of the best pieces we ever played in my time at that school. It's one of my all time favorites and the middle line with the bass drum is my favorite part. I played 1st trumpet so I had a really fun part :)
I played my senior year in band :) i was the 1st chair so i got the piccolo solo which was amazing! loved this song soooo much and i really wished this had been our MPA piece instead of what we played just cause it was so much more beautiful
this is what we play for the seniors graduation. and one by one throughout the peace the seniors leave leave. so it it shows what the band will look like next year
I played this piece twice in the same year; in my districts honor band and in the UA high school honor band. I played the same percussion part, which was the medium tom part, and it was so fun!
Wow, you're one lucky guy! I'm only in my first year highschool and I'm still hoping and praying that one of his songs are even mentioned from my music teacher...Samuel Hazo is such a brilliant composer, definitely one of my favorites!
I played trombone 2 my JR year, the other two tromboneist were graduating that year, this was the last song I got to play with those two, still brings a tear to my eye listing to this and thinking of them, Tanner and Olivia, if you guys see this you guys were awesome and I miss you two.
I remember I played this during my school's graduation last year and I absolutely loved it. It has a very special place in my heart so much that I might just cry listening to this lol. Even though I wasn't the one graduating that year.
Wow! Remember playing this during my final year of band in high school percussion on the base drum part ( we used a tenor drum). 3 years ago and it still warms my heart.
this piece is going to be the ballad in our 2015 marching show. it will also include John Adams' Short Ride in a Fast Machine Samuel Hazo's ride and this
This is one of my favorite pieces my school has done. We played this in California and got a unanimous superior rating (first in 6 years) Plus the percussion (my section) is amazing
Joshua Goldberg her mother died before she retired, hence the mourning tone near the end. however this song was written about a lady who was retiring and how great her directing is
I'm playing this in my band now for graduation. The woman the song was made for was our old band director, and it's amazing to be able to play it now, with the current director of my band. And since our old band comissioned it (I'm pretty sure) it's gonna be amazing
So glad for this recording. Someone claimed all of Hazo's music on Spotify, so the only good piece of his left for hearing is a High School band recording of this, and the Oboe unfortunately isn't all that great for the pieces standards.
Our symphonic band played this at a music festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City and it was amazing. Our band got best in site for the festival and there where other bands from all around the country. Very pretty song!

Lyle Smith so it really is yesterday’s joy?
Ayy that's why he called it Yesterday's Joy

James Maupin I tried to play the Tom Tom part in this but I just couldn’t master it. I’ve never ever seen rhythms like that
@@southerncrescentproductions Hazo is a percussionist. That's probably why. 😉

FACTS
Feels like no matter how many times I hear one of Hazo's pieces I'm always blown away by the beauty and excitement of it.

Am I the only one that loves the trombone part at 2:01. It's so powerful and it gives it a strong ground to that part. I love playing it 😍😍
Apparently the composer loved it, because he also wrote it for tuba and euphonium.
It was mainly for the low brass itself not just trombones and Honestly that part was dominated by the tubas from what I could tell
Belle 219 me too I love the trombone part I am first part on trombone
@@endieend129also for tenor sax

Such a damn beautiful piece. We played it twice my high school career and I loved. Flutes all the way! Gives me goose bumps every time!

Riley Barron Your comment, much like this piece, made me cry. May he RIP.
Mr. Tanner has told stories of him they are both truly special people to us.
There are so many memories and emotions around this piece, you can feel all of them.
I love this. I'm from Sandy hook and we played Glorificare by Samuel Hazo and now I have the piccolo solo in this. His writing is perfect
Nothing can describe how much I fell in love with this song last year. I had bass clarinet part...listening to it again brought back so many memories.
This was a beautiful song we played in 8th grade...our flute player did an amazing job with that beginning solo.
Playin this in wind ensemble. Euphonium player here!
