- Electrolytes are very expensive, yet we need to supplement them on our carnivore/keto lifestyles. Bulk ingredients are readily available at a fraction of the cost of the commercially available brands.
Here's what you need and where to get it. Follow the simple instructions in this video and you will never have to spend all that money on expensive electrolyte supplementation again.
IF YOU DEVIATE FROM THE PRODUCTS I USE, YOU WILL HAVE TO DO YOUR OWN CALCULATIONS ON WEIGHT OF EACH PRODUCT YOU USE PER BATCH!
IF YOU WANT TO USE MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE instead of MAGNESIUM CITRATE: order magnesium glycinate instead. Here is the Amazon link:

Brilliant idea. Not only saving a significant amount of cash, but avoiding any flavours or sweeteners too. It’s a win win. Mitch the Mad Scientist!
You got the "mad" part right! LOL
I agree, especially with the points on sweetener and/or flavouring; I think people relying on those are not severing their connection with the sweet carbs that have got most of us here in the first place.
Talk about a great video. Iv'e always been the guy that wont walk by a penny on the ground without stoping and picking it up. I will do this, thanks Mitch. Shared on facebook
For those who want the convenience of buying prepackaged servings LMNT has raw unflavored packets with only the minerals and no sweetener or flavoring.
I’ve been making my own electrolytes about 6 months now. The savings is tremendous. Glad to see others making their own. (If I want a flavor I just add a package of true lime or true lemon, to my drink.) I like the saltiness.
I whipped up 2 batches yesterday, one for me and one to give to a friend who says he will give carnivore a try come New Year's (fingers crossed).
I added 6g of the mixture to half liter of water. As Mitch said, the taste is almost imperceptible. It's certainly not salty at all. There's just a hint of something in the background. More noticeable than the taste is the Mg and/or the K doesn't dissolve like the salt does so there was a bit of a "powdery" texture, especially in only a half liter. Think the fines in the bottom of a cup of espresso, French press or Turkish coffee. It isn't unpleasant or off-putting, just not what you're expecting when drinking water. This morning I mixed it in 24 ounces of water and it was much better. Tomorrow I'm going to start mixing it into a liter of water. I suspect the "texture" will mostly be gone.
I give this episode of Mitch in the Kitch, Mad Scientist Edition, two thumbs up. 👍👍
Thank you John!
I put a half teaspoon in my cup of coffee every morning. Good recipe Mitch 😊
Thanks so much Mitch!! I'm a lifetime carnivore ..almost 83 .. and have never needed to add anything but salt to my meat ..and never had leg cramps . But my beloved husband of 6 years had them frequently until he finally went complete carnivore 18 months ago. He still suffers from them occasionally and this will be awesome.. I am wondering if I put some of this mixture in a salt shaker and he can use it on his eggs and meat? We run 2 ranches .. one in Alberta Canada and one in Colombia South America . We work hard every day . As everyone knows, there's not alot of real heat even working hard in the sun in Alberta . But in Colombia , the sweat runs off us like water in a shower !! I've seen it drip..drip off the ends of my braids ..and that's just from my head!! I eat alot more salt at the ranch in Colombia!! THANKS AGAIN LADDIE!! AMAZON ORDER IS ON ITS WAY!! ❤❤😂
Hi Maggie! I recognize you from your appearances on Dr. Chaffee's channel. Thanks for being a proponent of this lifestyle, and I often use you as an example when I get comments like "You can't possibly stay alive without lots of healthy fruits and vegetables". I'm glad you found my little channel and hope to hear from you more often. ...... Mitch
I forgot to answer your question, Maggie. I suppose you could use it shaken on food, but I'm not sure about the flavor or getting the correct dose.
Both myself and a friend had horrible muscle cramps. My doctor recommended chelated magnesium 500mg in the morning. 100% effective for both of us. Mine was lower back and my friend's was leg cramps. I tried regular magnesium and it didn't work for me.
MAGGIE!!! I also recognized you. You are my hero, you amazing woman!!!
Mitch, you’re a laddie now! Ahhh, youth!
That was great!
So was my haul from Giant grocery today I picked up 19 lbs of ribeye roasts for $90! The sale starts again on the 15th of this month.
👍👍
When I was using electrolytes I gave my son some of my mix, he is 10, he told me I was giving him ocean water. It was plenty diluted to my taste but obviously my taste buds had changed more than I realized.
That's understandable.
When I first went HFLC, I did suffer fairly frequent leg cramps, and I’d say these intensified a bit when transitioning to carnivore (my journey has been keto-ketovore-carnivore…mostly). I did try various forms of supplements to get some relief, including the big brand often bandied about by the usual suspects, and these helped a bit, but are very expensive. Now however, I simply ensure my meats are well seasoned (salt to taste), and do so by using a good quality salt (I use Redmonds [hard to find here in Oz], and also a large container of Pink Himalayan from Costco), and for the most part, I rarely get cramps. I have noticed that on the rare occasion I eat something I shouldn’t like a choc bar or similar, I’ll get severe leg cramps that night…kind of reminding me how stupid I was for eating the carbs again.
I had similar experience with cramps which resolved when I upped the electrolytes.
Do you drink reverse osmosis filtered water or mineral water, I used to drink reverse osmosis and then I figured out it was pulling minerals out of my body when I switch to Pellegrino it helped when my leg cramps
Because of the “Potassium-Sodium Pump”, a process in the body which protects the body from imbalances of these two minerals in the body, the body will dump potassium when the sodium (salt) is too elevated. I lowered my salt intake and my leg cramps went away.
@@vonitaesse4307 that’s interesting….my wife and I generally eat the same, with the main difference being I salt my food significantly more than she does, but we both still get the odd cramp here and there. But as my comment implies, I don’t really have an issue when I avoid what I should be avoiding😉
Thank you for this brilliant video! I have purchased LMNT and SaltT, but they are very expensive. I cannot sustain that cost. I came over from The Carnivore Odyssey, she mentioned your electrolyte recipe video. Have a great day! :)
Glad it was helpful!
Old men are the best men, taking your advice, also one nutrient we,re missing causing cramps is Boron
Thanks, I'll check that out
I agrée
I agree. I make up a mixture of one teaspoon Epsom Salt (for the Mg), and a half-teaspon of Borax (for the Boron) in a tall glass of water, taken once a week or so. It's fairly bitter, which can be fixed to some degree by adding some Lemon juice (!). This obviously contains no K. So I will try Mitch's mix, and just add a little Borax to it.
@@aivkaraisn't borax bad to swallow?
@angeladearden2689 check the toxicity section of the entry for borax, even on Wikipedia... turns out it's about the same as table salt.
Good video. After I mix the batch of electrolytes, I put approx 1.6g of the mix into 50 or so tiny paper cups (I have a better scale). I use exclusively Citrates and Bicarbonates, they provide the additional benefit of alkalizing your urine. If you eat a meat based diet you will 100% have very acidic urine, acidic urine results in impaired excretion of uric acid and some other waste products. However when consuming citrates and bicarbonates one has to be careful not to consume too much right before a meal or it will impede digestion, which is probably why the popular brands use mostly Chlorides.
Clearly, you have thought this out. Kudos!
New subscriber here. I like this. Wanted to save money. I’m not fully carnivore yet but planned on doing it. I take 3 blood pressure and pre diabetic. I want to be drug free like you. Enjoyed watching your videos. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure and welcome!
I definitely will be doing this! Thanks Mitch!! Commercial electolytes ARE expensive and none of the brands are my favorite. I want to avoid the additives. EXCELLENT video!!
Glad to hear that, Betsy
LOL...we think alike. Been making my own electrolyte mix for a year or so...
I did the same exact thing a few months ago. (My idea!) I even used the same brand of minerals "bulk supplements". Funny thing is I also used an empty electrolyte container & the scoop. After I mix a cup of the mixture, I squirt in some water flavor enhancer because it tastes terrible without it. If youre on Carnivor diet, you need to add electrolytes or you will get cramps, heart palpitaions etc.
That's great. My 100 serving batch fits in an old Berg jar. The scoop is also just right. Who knew? I did peel the label off the jar ..... LOL
I like your videos, they helped me a lot. I'm getting good results on the carnivore diet. My friends & family think I'm crazy, but I lost a bunch of body fat, and have more energy. @@OldGuyCarnivore
Sort of like the old-fashioned idea of "switchel" (which I still make) that combined things like ginger, molasses, salt, vinegar, etc., with water to make an electrolyte rehydration drink. Nowadays people buy Gatorade as a "sports drink" to do the same job, which it doesn't do nearly as well and costs a king's ransom in comparison. The medical community calls it "oral rehydration salts." The WHO has its own recipe as do many other medical sites. In any event, you can make your own so cheap, as you easily showed us Mitch, and save yourself a bundle! 🧡
Thanks!
Wow thank you Mitch I’m on a mission to slash my cost. This is a good one
Glad to help
Isn't this how breaking bad started ? Thank you
Now that's funny!
Hahaha brilliant comment
Good one...😂
I used to use mine to weigh sugar hahaha
Great video and presentation! I prepare my electrolytes similarly and usually add them to my SodaStream sparkling water, because it cuts the salty taste significantly.
Great tip!
I use the Keto Chow brand. 10-20 drops in a glass of water every morning. But maybe I'll play chemist, but I just ordered the 55-gallon drum size. 🤣
This seems like a much better alternative , thanks for sharing, I like mag chloride and citrate. I use Redmonds salt, but pink Himalayan is very good also.
That’s great. Thanks for the links and the ingredient measurements. We’re always looking to save money on this kind of stuff. So much better than the sugar laden sports drinks for the kids.
My pleasure!
Hi there. I also make my own electrolytes based on the LMNT ratios. However, I do not add the magnesium or I run to the bathroom ALL day. I just take it at bedtime to help with sleep and it doesn't upset my "plumbing".
Good afternoon from Copperhill Tn. I liked this video. The more I watch carnivore videos, they have a product to sell. I thought this way of eating was supposed to be natural.,without having to buy stuff like a diet program. Maybe we should make our own stuff, without creating another big food company. Keep it simple is the best way to go.
Thanks!
Our generous keto/carnivore doctors/educated influencers don’t spend HOURS of their life every day that could be spent earning money, relaxing, loving family and friends to help people for NOTHING. Those ads let these generous, educated, caring people give you and me FREE health and medical information that transforms our lives. Also, MANY people would rather buy premixed electrolytes or convenience keto/carnivore products because they live very busy lives. It is a win for everyone to have ads. That said, Mitch is an awesome generous, retired carnivore who helps motivate many of us! Gratitude Mitch!
Excellent visual walk through.. I’m going to make this up and give it to my grown kids for Christmas.. Thank you for taking the time to help us improve our health.. You are awesome….
My pleasure
Thank you for this video. Electrolytes are very expensive to buy here in New Zealand and I have decided, now, to make my own just as you have.
Glad it was helpful!
Woohoo! This will be very useful for many. Thanks for this one Mitch 🥰
My pleasure!
Another great episode of Mitch in the Kitch. You may have given me the nudge needed to finally order bulk potassium and magnesium. 👍
Being a cheapskate, and because LMNT and the other brands are ridiculously overpriced for what you get, I've been thinking about playing mad scientist and whipping up a big batch of my own electrolytes ever since I became a carnie. My current mix is a couple shakes of Nu-Salt (potassium chloride) and a couple shakes of whatever salt is at hand (Redmond, Himalayan, kosher, sea salt or even iodized table salt if that's the only thing available) in a small amount of water. I down it like a double shot of cheap whiskey and immediately follow with a plain water chaser so I don't taste the saltiness. I do this several times a day. I recently started taking a magnesium pill (250mg) once a day because of cramps. It seems to have helped some but that could be coincidence or just in my head.
The magnesium does help with cramps. You can take 800 mg with no worries, but I take 400. Glad you liked the video!
QUESTION: I was told, and have since read, magnesium citrate can cause digestive upset and diarrhea. Was wondering why you chose it over magnesium glycinate. Seems like it would be a safer choice.
Also - would the amount be the same if made with glycinate instead of citrate?
I chose it because it has a mild laxative effect. Glycinate is OK, just look at the label and figure how much you need to use to net the same 400mg dose.
I use 1/4 cream of Tartar for K and a capsule of magnesium Taurate and 1/4 tsp Redmonds salt.
Thank you!!! Currently taking Dr. Berg formula, this will be a savings.
Thanks for doing all the leg work!
My pleasure!
Hi Mitch! This is a great video. I am looking at a one serving pack of LMNT right now. It is 1000 mg sodium, 200 mg potassium, 60 mg magnesium. Compared to your recipe this is sadly lacking. I find that the sodium level is so high that he causes me to retain water as a result I am unable to use it. I think I will give you recipe a try. Thank you.
Sounds great!
Mitch, Just made my first batch today. Thank you for this and what a great idea.
Fantastic!
@@OldGuyCarnivore I also want to point out that I’m close to 30 days on carnivore and I’ve had some arm pain and some other back ache pains and I’ve noticed since I’ve started using this drink today that the pain are starting to subside quickly. I didn’t realize how important electrolytes are. Glad I did this.
Can't thank you enough for this video! I am 73 and finally going carnivore and need to drop at least 30kg and have lost the first 6kg already after 3 weeks. Trying to do everything right and your advice is a big boost for me. Thanks bloke, keep up the great work of ambassador of carnivore diet to help as many people as possible.
It's my pleasure, thank you
Wow that’s the same brand I use!..but I take a bag of mag citrate and a bag of mag glycinate and 50/50 those into a jar then add the right amount potassium citrate. I combine those two mags together because you get the best of both worlds, it solved my cramping problem that I had for years. Bulk supplements has high quality stuff. Thanks for your videos!
My pleasure
Thank you for giving us this. I like cheaper alternatives. 🎉
You bet!
Thank you so much for a superb video I will try it, I’ve just been drinking salt water so far!!
Glad you liked it!
We have the "Escali Primo Digital Food Scale Multi-Functional Kitchen Scale and Baking Scale for Precise Weight Measuring and Portion Control, 8.5 x 6 x 1.5 inches, White " that we got from Amazon back in 2020 and it's good down to 1g, so that would simplify things. It'll go up to 11 lbs, and the batteries seem to last a year or more in most cases. It's only $1 more than what we paid for it back then, so that's good.
I'm sure 1g won't matter that much in most cases, but our previous scale had the 5 gram granularity to it, and it drove me crazy.
With this, even within 5 grams would work ok.
This is AWESOME!!!
Before hearing about LMNT, I heard about “Água dos Milagres” from Brazil.
There is also what it’s called “Snake Juice” which is also a good mix.
👍💚 Keep It SUPER Simple.... I LOVE it!!
Thanks Mitch. I just ordered the ingredients from Amazon. I appreciate you putting the links on your site.
My pleasure
Mitch You never cease to amaze me!! You missed your calling 😊
I don’t normally comment on RUclips, but just wanted to say I enjoy your channel. Ordered all of the components from your affiliate links. Thanks! :-)
I appreciate that!
What a great idea. Thank you for this.
My pleasure!
Just mixed up my batch. I chose Bulk Supplements Magnesium Gluconate (don’t need poop help), Microingredients Potassium Chloride and Redmonds Rock Crushed Horse Salt. I used an empty Calm container to shake it all together. The long handled scoop that comes with the container works out about right for one dose. Distributed mix into smaller containers for car and countertop
Sounds good
Thank you so much! I bought all the ingredients and it will save my family a lot of money. Appreciate you sir!
You are very welcome
I'm a 77 yo retired RN. I don't know where u got the safe proportions to use, but your method looked very accurate and really is a great advantage over the bought mixed products. I take prescription potassium chloride due to taking blood pressure medication, so I would have to consult with MD before using my own mix. I salt liberally and take a magnesium complex mainly to help me sleep better. So, I'm already getting these 3 electrolytes and have no labs or weird symptoms indicating I should adjust them. 😊
That's great to hear
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mitch. What a big help!
Very welcome!
Another winner Mitch...thats for the recipe
Thank you kindly
I love LMNT (element), but it is not affordable for me. Thanks for the recipe. I need electrolytes, but haven’t been able to afford them, so I’ve been putting about a half teaspoon each of Himalayan pink salt and NuSalt (for the potassium) in my water, then taking a magnesium soft gel every night before bed. I’m sure I’m not getting enough. I can tell by the way my head swims when I get up “too fast.” I appreciate you helping us create our own mix, and saving us so much money. When I get my next check, I’m going to be buying this stuff from your Amazon link. Thanks so much.
My pleasure
Thanks old friend I been needing that recipe.
You bet
I am going to do this! I have Berg’s and I detest the taste! I have the mag citrate and the pink salt all I need is the potassium. Thanks for this easy to do money saver!
I’m glad your mix worked out!
Thanks!
I have been wanting a good recipe for electrolytes. I cannot afford the already made.
Hope this helps you!
Way to go. That's what I do, not the same formula but I'm still tweaking mine. Maybe I should try yours. 😊 Thx for filming this and sharing it with us. 👍👍👍👍👍
My pleasure
Super cool! I do my own also! Using Sally K Nortons mix but essentially the same and just mix up a gallon at a time and use it up as I need water. It IS a huge amount cheaper!
Really enjoyed your video! You really explained it. Going to try this hopefully soon.
I do reminds real salt Nusalt and magnesium. I don’t add as much salt as lmnt, more dr berg portions 22:21
@Mitch - You said the 100 servings mix was worth $50 - $75 of a store bought one. In fact it's a much better bargain than that, I'd say! The LMNT is $45 for a box of 30 servings. That means by comparison that 100 servings would be $148.50.
I believe you are correct.
I plan on doing this, but I definitely want flavored
That works too.
Add a little mio or drop in some fruit to infuse. You can also add 0.5 tsp of cocoa per serving to be like the LMNT chocolate.
i made my own when transitioning (and experiencing cramps), and i still add magnesium, and pottasium while I've got some to use up, but other than that i now just occasionally have seaweed, which whilst not strictly carnivore would had ancestrally been an important source of electrolytes
I really enjoyed the video Mitch!! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Thank you, Mitch. You are a doll!! Shared w my son and DIL.
Glad to help!
Great idea Mitch.
Don’t know if I’ll go to the though. I’ve been using Dr Berry’s formula for the past 3 years, also Liquid Labs. Your idea does seem to be a great deal less expensive.
Manganese is what got me to splurge on Dr. Sten Ekberg's electrolytes, the best I've tried but pricey. I bought powders of choline, MSM powder (methylsulfonylmethane), DMG (dimehylglycine), TMG (betaine anydrous Amino acid derivative). Same as you, to use my long ago chemistry classes to make my own daily liquid supplements.
Do it yourself is a dying art form.
That’s the brand I use but I don’t like the flavoring and stevia making it sickeningly sweet yuk.
I use Ekbergs also. It's the best price at 50$ for a 3 month supply compared to LMNT or Relyte. I mix mine in my first 20 ounces of the day and I like the taste alot. That said, I would like to learn to make my own and even try the flavorless. Thanks Mitch for keeping it simple. 💯
Doc Berg is a great guy.
Love your videos Mitch....you are such a character....!!!...I am now making your version of the electrolyte powder drink and it really is the best way ....I like your ratios and is so affordable....thx so much
I'm glad that it helps
Ooooh ok. I think I understand now. Thank you for explaining. I just didn’t want to mix it all and ruin the mix until understood.
That's great. You're not the first person who wasn't sure. I've had other people mix all the wrong quantities, and I had to actually calculate what they needed of each ingredient to add to make it right, sometimes resulting in a mix of about 500 doses.
I like what you did today, was waiting for this episode. Have me thinking a 3d printer might be good to further make something like this simple, assuming there is a food grade plastic available, could 3d print a spoon to get exactly the gram amount you want, maybe make the spoon half a sphere to make the math relatively simple to know what diameter to use to get what you want. 500 mg of potassium seems a little light to me, curious where you are getting the other 2000 mg Mitch.
I get it from food, Bacon and eggs are loaded, and I eat 1/2 pound of bacon and 4 to 6 eggs moat days. IfcI think I haven't had enough, I might take a 400mg capsule before bed, but I rarely do that.
I saw this video/enjoyed your presentation so much I've purchased the products and mixed it all up and am sipping on my DIY Electrolytes.
I appreciate your sharing
You are so welcome!
Do you feel that supplementing with electrolytes is something you need? Have you tried just gong pure carnivore with only salt, and had issues that were resolved when you started taking potassium and magnesium?
Nighttime legs cramps. Electrolytes stopped them I think. It probably isn't hurting me as a precaution.
I'm just now stumbling upon this video. Is this a good drink for construction workers?
I appreciate the content, thanks for sharing!!
I think electrolytes help especially if you work Outdoors a lot
Thanks Mitch i just made my first batch today!!
Why did you choose magnesium citrate out of all the others and how did you decide on the amounts?
Citrate for laxative property, amounts I decided based on what I think I needed to suppliment my mostly beef eggs and bacon diet.
Btw, I tried to join your channel but hit a glitch so I’ll work on it tomorrow. Tired now. Appreciate all you share with us! 😊
Thanks Betsy
Thanks Mitch! I'm going to give this a try.
Just to recap:
350 g Magnesium Citrate
100 g Potassium Chloride
150 g Himalayan Pink Salt
1 serving = 6 g or about a heaping tsp
Those apply to those products I used. If you buy something else, the concentrations may be different, so you may have to do some calculating.
In Germany they add zinc, why?
I'm not sure. Some people add calcium or other elements too.
I think True Lemon brand crystals (not the flavored drink, but just the lemon crystals) would be good as a flavoring. I like lemon.
I don't know what's in that.
I have some of the True Graperfruit and the ingredients are:citric acid, grapefruit oil and grapefruit juice (crystalized) It is probably similar for the lemon variety.
Where did you buy the ingredients?
Links are in the video description and on my website oldguycarnivore.com stuff I use page.
Another Old 73 year old guy here about 6 weeks into doing Carnivore. I've been using LMNT and this is a much more affordable alternative. I also like to that you can customize the mix of ingredients. Where are the links below? to the products that you use?

That should be supplemented with iodine more so than sodium. Since we get a lot of it from salting our food. But iodine deficiency is a problem in people, as iodized salt isn't supplying the amount the body requires.
I agree, for many, a small amount of iodine is very helpful. I personally do supplement with iodine
Great video and information! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I definitely need to start adding electrolytes to my daily routine; I’ve been having a lot of lightheadedness lately. I actually fainted a week ago. I can’t seem to keep water in my body. Every time I drink anything, I have to tinkle within 30 minutes. I hope increasing my electrolytes will help.
That might be part of the problem, but sometimes you just have to get some blood work and see a doctor
@ saw my doctor yesterday. Labs ordered. He believes it’s dehydration also. Have to wait for lab results to rule out any other possibility. Thanks for responding! Have a great day.
Mitch you are the best. I love following you and how practical you are I have been using cream of tarter for my potassium, do you or anyone else know if this is correct.
It has potassium in it, but I don't know much about how to use it.
Nu Salt is potassium
I use those bulk bags
Thanks Mitch 👍
You bet!
Thanks Mitch, I like being a mad scientist!
You bet!
Will Redmond's salt work just as well?
Probably. 👍
Redmond’s is the cleanest, it comes deep within the earth not contaminated from the sea.
Thanks a lot! I've been a long time user of Nuun tabs - popular in the previous century. With this video I can start with your formula and adjust as necessary.
Glad it helped!
You get used to the salty non flavored stuff, I never used the fake sugar ones, didnt want to feed the sweet addiction.
Thank you, Mitch. Happy New Year!
Same to you!
Flavored ones usually contains Maltodextrin and that might mess up my otherwise perfect Carnivore diet.
Very true!
That would depend on which brand you buy. LMNT, KetoChow, and Redmond, do not use maltodextrin in their flavored electrolytes.
A leave the white powdery substances in the original packaging just in case the powers that be show up to search the wrong address on the warrant!
Sad, yet funny!
A half tablespoon worked out for me to just about 7 Grams... rather than the heaping teaspoon ;)
Thank you Mitch. Much appreciated!
