Levon is without a doubt my favorite singer/songwriter/drummer,etc EVER. If you ever wanna hear a true American singing about real life, listen to Levon.
I saw the L.H. Band last night at Wolf Trap ( Vienna, VA ) and sadly they didn't play this but man what a band he has! This version is nice but his version on Jericho w/ The Band and as you mentioned, Hudson & Danko is UnF****** unbelievable. The best cover version of any song i have ever heard....surpasses the great original by Bruce no doubt. I bought the cd and couldn't stop re-playing that one song over and over again! Last night they did another song from that cd, Blind Willie McTell.
Levon understood the essence of traditional American music. Pure roots. He will always hold a special place for anyone studying the evolution of this incredible art form. Levon's having a good laugh with Dick Clark today over the fact that he performed on American Bandstand with Ronnie Hawkins before Levon even met Bob Dylan. Jon Pareles' beautifuly written obit in the New York Times provides a glimpse into life of the legendary 'driver' of The Band. It's worth the read.
I bet a traditional Arkansas Thanksgiving dinner was the Levon's style with some pickin' and grinin'....What a talent...I love the Band and Levon's contribution...
@sophiesage I saw him in Charlotte NC this yr..What an awesome band he has is RIGHT! Best concert I've been to in a long time! I saw The Band multiple times in the 70s; have never been swept away by any band like I was by them; I doubt that I will be. Lots of bands had their chance; I have seen pretty much everyone that has ever hit the road. I wish Rick and Richard could be here to share in the success b/c as Levon says; he keeps the music alive for them; finally many of those struggles r gone.
remember seeing the Band in the early '70's. great, great show...or maybe it was the mescaline. either way, this is superb. my favorite bruce sprinsteen song & i'm not even a huge springsteen fan--though i've seen him twice. gotta love that levon!!
Heaven sent.
Goat. RIP
