  • Wondering how to dress more creatively instead of just following all the standard style rules? What if we use these 3 style rules when they work and break them when they don't? How do we dress more artsy, creatively, and funky when style rules usually point us toward "elegant" or "classy"... what about FUN?
The particular style rule that we're talking about here:
If your outfit isn't interesting with color, make it interesting with shape, and if it's not interesting with shape, make it interesting with texture. And if it's not interesting with texture...make it interesting with, you guessed it... color. Rinse and repeat.
So that seems pretty straightforward, but how do you make your outfit more stylish when this rule doesn't seem like enough? How about combining them! What are the circumstances where we don't need any of them?

    Pockets always!!!
I've stopped buying dresses / skirts / trousers without proper pockets; makes shopping for clothes much simpler, a lot fewer choices!

But some manufacturers are using the thinnest fabric for the pockets….i bought a Calvin Klein coat (thrifted) that I loved the style but the pockets are thin acetate and keys would probably tear a hole. My mother was a good enough seamstress to add or change pockets in skirts and dresses….not me.

@@marylhere Do you have a friend who might do this for you? I sew and do happily help out a few friends. (As long as they aren't asking me all the time or have a need for it to be "fixed" that moment.)

You can pair an oversized Hawaiian men's shirt over those overalls. Wear it open tho and not buttoned up; gives a kimono vibe. I find a lot of those types of shirts at thrift stores and in so many patterns!
And you could also put a denim jacket over the white fluffy shirt and the 90s skirt outfit.

I liked everything except the white ruffled top -I found it distractingly wide. But it might look great with a pair of dark, narrow pants. Or skinny jeans even.(i hear they’re ‘back’ this week.)

Oh gosh I heard that about skinny jeans too and I was like, whatever happened to time. Is time a thing anymore?

Also the wideness of that top actually surprised me. I did not expect that! 😅

      Green dress is romantic.
The leopard scarf puts the emphasis on you which is really what clothes should do!

Love the inspiration. I, too, know the woes of wavy hair and share your love of pockets.

Love your mindset! Why is Iris Apfel so famous? Certainly not for her classical elegance. Love that you want to be the wacky aunt! ❤

😊Yes, I greatly admire Diane's passion for experimentation. Highly enjoy her avant-garde style, but most patterns let alone actual print clashes are way OUT of my own comfort zone😔. Much happier to live vicariously through her terrific 🎭theatricality.
😘Had a great aunt Lucille who was a maverick in her own time. She was model height & had such a forthright personality. Her eyebrows alone could speak volumes. She had a short elegant coiffure of fluffy black hair that struck me as a 40s film heroine.
She was so proud to have worked a busy 💄beauty counter👄 of a shop in West LA after her husband died. Apparently it was a popular spot for young 📽Hollywood starlets.
For her typical "At Home" entertaining, she dressed like Mrs. Roper from Three's Company📺 in these glorious maxi length muu-muu dresses & caftans w/matching mules. Her loungewear was pure feminine 70s 💫glamour.
❤I always loved her big & bold costume jewelry. She'd wear these cool clip-on earrings, beautiful beaded necklaces, & adorn her hands w/a multitude of these marvelous vintage lucite rings.
      Miss her.

I love your outfits 🥰I have also always liked a lot of colors and different styles mixed together! I mean if you compare from clothing styles from the past it seems like people had so much more fun… what happened? That whole capsule wardrobes suggested now are sooooo boring

It might be you're gamin body type (of Kibbe types). That's why you look so good dressed like French.

If you put a sweater on top of overalls, good luck if you suddenly have to pee. And just throwing a coat on top of a blah dress is ok as long as you're outside, but who leaves a coat on indoors?
