  • @EricFortuneJr.
    @EricFortuneJr. 4 года назад +2

    I’ve noticed most flat plane crank engines have a lower torque rating than a comparable cross plane engine of similar displacement or smaller. The current Ford Coyote makes 420 ft lbs vs the Voodoo 429. The Voodoo has a little more torque but not by much and it’s a little higher in the RPM range compared to the 5.0 so it doesn’t pull quite as hard off the line. Most Euro super cars seem to have this same characteristic, high horsepower numbers and slightly lower torque figures, but they rev really high so when you do get into peak torque it’ll pull hard at those higher RPMs.

      Have a anti vibration mechanism and a 102.9mm(4.050 inch) bore and 82.55mm(3.250 inch) stroke(will the 5.5L DOHC FPC V8 have this bore and stroke; depends on the blocks bore spacing). Having a short stroke will lessen vibrations significantly; the Ford Voodoo block has 100mm bore spacing; limiting the bore size to 94mm, requiring a long stroke of 92.7mm to get 5165cc of displacement(forged,light weight alluminum pistons don't have as much influence on vibrations as a longer stroke).

      Hey Simba, You ask a great question.
      The most logical & cost-effective way for GM to resolve the vibration issue for the
      street driven Corvettes is to design the new flat-plane engine with over-head cams.
      Actually, the "vibration" isn't that big of a problem & barely noticeable...even in big CID
      engines. But GM is likely to be concerned about potential engine warranty issues, etc.
      QED; They would prefer to design success & longevity into this radical new engine.
      Very likely, the new Corvette...with the flat-plane crank engine...will be non-pushrod.

    6:45. I don't believe the counterweights are heavy on a cross plane to counteract firing order. The heavy counterweights are to balance the wobbling of a crank that has the crank pins 180 degrees apart on both ends. Picture the cross plane spinning with no rods or pistons connected. It is going to wobble because of the location of the crankpins. The counterweights balance out this wobbling effect. A four cylinder (or v-8 flat crank) has the crankpins on both ends lined up with each other. (An inline 6 also has the end crankpins lined up or an inline twin 360 degree crank.) Picture the flat crank (or inline 6 crank) spinning. There is no wobble in the crankshaft, therefore no heavy counterweights need to be implemented to balance out this wobble. As is stated this makes the crank lighter and faster revving.

    To address your question about weight reduction.
    Bring on the 2800 lb, 500 hp Corvette.
    I have always wanted Chevrolet to make a super light Corvette model in the 2800 lb range. This way you build a much better performing car from many perspectives. Brakes, tires can be lighter, less expensive and last longer. The road racing capability is vastly better due to the lower unsprung weight with lighter wheels, tires, brakes therefore the dampers can control the compression and rebound damping quicker and better. The list goes on. It's just a better way to build a car.
    Unfortunately they will likely never do it because they know that the majority of people that buy the Corvette don't know how to drive anyway and just want the most HP possible.
    They don't care about performance because performance to them is going fast in a straight line.
    So at the same purchase price;
    A Corvette that has 500 hp, weighs 2800 lbs (power to weight 1 to 5.6) and will kill on a road course and everywhere else a Corvette with 650 hp that weighs 3700 lbs (power to weight 1 to 5.7) but it will not sell because most important thing to most people is to say "my Corvette has 650 hp" and it's never going to be used on a road race course, or driven to appreciate it's capability anyway.
    GM knows Big HP is what sells a car not true performance.
    This is why Dodge makes 800hp cars that underperform terribly, handle like cr@fp and eat tires and brakes because they weight 4500 lbs. But they sell great.

    It the Flat plane crank doesn't need so many counterweights and makes it free revving, why haven't they been making engines like this before. I think its because when one bank fires and then the other on the opposite side, this causes more stress on other parts of the engine. It does make a nice noise though

    Manufacturers have been sucked into the horsepower numbers thing, sticking a huge compressor on the engine with little regard to how it affects weight distribution and overall weight gain. My favorite Vette has been the C6 Z06 w/6spd man. trans. My personal car is a ‘96 6spd. with the LT4 now making close to 500hp, and other mods emphasizing autoX/circuit performance. I have hoped for years that they would concentrate on a smaller displacement, light weight engine w/small overall dimensions and reasonably high NA output. Emphasis should be on weight reduction and track performance. The base Vette is more of a GT/touring car and I’ve always wanted a model targeted at those, like myself, who like to take their car to autoX/ track day events. 600-ish HP, reduced weight, tunable track focused suspension/brakes would be perfect!

    I owned a C6 Z06 and currently drive a C7 Z06. I like the idea of the C8 Z06 being lighter than the standard Corvette. Carbon brakes, wheels, light weight body panels, and maybe lighter manual seats (my 86 SVO Mustang had excellent manual adjustable seats).I would think the Z06 could be 150 pounds lighter at not too high a cost. Maybe the light weight could be an option? Torque is important. It is one of the reasons the C7 Z06 is so much fun to drive. I dont have to wait for the power to arrive!

    The race engine is limited by rule, the street engine will be significantly more powerful. J
    ust going to a 4 valve design is good for about 20% more power. So lets just say the LT2 had a DOHC upgrade option. That would be good for about 100hp. Then you might think but it's only 5.5L. Well because of the better flowing heads with 4 valves they can rev higher and or include VVL in addition to the VVT so allowing for a more aggressive cam profile. Between the two they can make up for the .7L displacement disadvantage pretty easily.

Just by engine size alone about 100 pounds the body about another 100 ponds approximately 3330 pounds The lightest maybe 3277 pounds like a 1988 Lamborghini countach this will happen to make up for additional weight to be added later like a twin turbo system with intercoolers, AW steering option for ZR1 , standard AW steering, AWD and electric motors with batterys. Which will be at least 200 pounds total added to the curb weights I mentioned above. 3600 lbs range for a ZORA hybrid. Not bad weight of a fast and furious Paul walker Supra with about 1053 bhp

    Interesting report. I don't see how they cut weight and keep the price reasonable. They will have to come up with at least 600 hp. They haven't delivered a single C8, so we will have a long time to discuss this.

    • @rickjason215
      @rickjason215 4 года назад

      Lassi Kinnunen Where do you cut weight? Engine, transmission, brakes etc. can’t be made much lighter and keep cost down. The body is a very light composite. How do you go lighter cheaply? Surely, not carbon fiber. You have to figure GM engineers were trying to save weight. You can take out the stereo, speakers, air conditioning, but very few people will want a car like that.

    • @revmatchtv
      @revmatchtv  4 года назад

      Good discussion here! If you’ve seen the C8 frame up close it’s actually quite impressive. There appears to be a lot of weight savings. I’m sure they can cut some by using expensive CF, but keeping the cost down is a huge open question. One thing they could potentially do would be to make the trunk smaller, but that would require reengineering pretty much everything, so that’s not cheap either.

    • @rickjason215
      @rickjason215 4 года назад

      RevMatchTV Having a usable trunk was an important design decision. They wanted to give the impression that you can actually use the car to go play golf or load it with groceries. I believe they won’t go smaller than room for a bag of golf clubs and the price fully loaded has to be less than 100 grand.
