It is in the Donon massif, commune of Vexaincourt, Vosges department and Grand Est region that the Lac de la Maix is located. It is a lake of glacial formation. It is therefore a natural lake. It is one of the last natural lakes of the Vosges mountains. It occupies an area of 1.6 hectares and is 678 meters above sea level. Its depth is 15 meters. Its emissary is the Maix stream. This lake surrounded by greenery is a perfect place to rest and take a breath of fresh air. It is a perfect tourist destination for those who need to relax, completely get away from it all and get away from the daily grind.
A story around the lake
On the shores of this lake, there is a chapel built on the ruins of a hermitage built in 1070. There is also a stone sarcophagus just nearby. These vestiges of the past reflect the presence of a place of worship and pilgrimage on the site. According to scientists who have the studies of these elements, they date back to Celtic times. A hermitage was built there in the 11th century. In 1508, a chapel was built there. This is the "Sea Chapel". It was a place that welcomed pilgrims. Following abuse, it was abolished in 1758 and the buildings were destroyed. It was still necessary to wait for the year 1865 for the design of a new chapel. It was built next to the old burial and the pilgrimage restored.
Legends
Many other legends are told around this same lake. Among the best known are the legends of the "Fiddler Devil", the "Lord of the Maix", the "Bench of the Virgin" or the "Monster of the "LochMaix"". Some of these legends also concern the other lakes found in the Vosges department.
