I heard the 2 am radio singles by the time I was 12, but my discovery of local FM led me to hear a lot of the other early material such as Simple Sister, Salty Dog, Quite Rightly So. Grand Hotel was newly released, and Bringing Home the Bacon was the big hit, and I still love the hooks in that track! Probably the biggest hit of all was Pandora's Box, and my fav PH album is Something Magic, especially Skating on Thin Ice. Great review Adam!
"In held t'was in I" is their best song in my opinion and my favourite album is "Grand hotel". But as you said, they had many very good songs and albums!
I loved all of their albums up until Procol's Ninth. There are only 3 or 4 songs that I ever play off of the Ninth. Hardly ever play side two of Something Magic, because it's not magical at all. Then after years of nothing along comes The Prodigal Stranger which sounds more like a Gary Brooker solo album than PH. But wait, they bounce back with The Well's On Fire. A great return if ever there was one. And alas, Novum which is such a bore of weak material and dare I say it, poor lyrics from Pete Brown. I have all their DVD's and love each and every one. Definitely in my Top Ten groups of all time. RIP dear Gary.
'Whiter Shade of Pale' has to be one of the greatest songs of all time. (Hello from Indiana, USA).
