Good grief, I cut my teeth in a shipyard and a foundry (which I thought was like something out of Dante's Inferno) in the 60's & 70's and I thought they were archaic but Christ this is in a league of its own.
In the 60s I worked during the holidays at the foundry where my grandad worked. He said that not much had really changed since the 30s, but by Gods was it clean despite being outdated. The manager wouldn't have it any other way, nor would he have his workers wandering around without safety specs/steelies or taking risks. I did a combination of fetch, lift, carry and sweep in various combinations and by hell it was hard work. Had muscles like Mr Universe by the end!
