    If all the tipping seems excessive, I want to say that it was money very well spent to have someone get you through the airport and help you at every step.

    I recently used wheelchair assistance at two major airports for the first time. It was a smooth, amazing experience. Without that help, I would not have made it to the departure gates or to the airport exits where I could be picked up in a car. The help provided through the TSA line was great. I tipped each person who assisted me $20. I traveled with a carry-on and a personal item bag. Although I was capable of lifting my carry-on into the overhead bin, on one of the flights the United Airlines flight attendant hurried to my side and placed my carry-on into the overhead bin. I told her I realized she didn't have to do that but told her how grateful I was for her help. I'm more likely to travel by air in the future because my experience with wheelchair assistance was A+.

    As a long time business flyer. Many times I used curb side skycap check in. Then I became disabled and unable to walk very far. So I showed my wife curbside baggage check in. They also had the reserved wheelchair for me. Makes going through TSA and to the gate easy and eliminates me falling.

    At DFW Dallas tx. I was told by the airport staff that at the ticket counter of your airline you can request a NON PASSENGER ESCORT PASS to assist someone [an elderly ] to the Gate. That way you know they got on the plane. Also as you said when purchasing a ticket you can request wheelchair assistance if there is a layover and at the next airport they will assist them to the next gate.

    The very first thing you mentioned about not having to be confined to a wheelchair and just having it to speed up the process was exactly what I needed to hear. I’ll be flying back from the Philippines in October and I have some disability, but not to the point where it affects my ability and endurance to walk. I’ll be traveling alone for the first time and instead of explaining my disability in detail, my mom just requested me to travel in a wheelchair. On one hand, I’m grateful that someone from the airport will just be there to guide me, but then I still do feel a bit of guilt.

    very good information! I just want to say that I am unemployed, my mom is on social security. It gets really expensive when you add up paying plus tipping Uber, sky caps, wheelchair assistance(especially if you have multiple connections!). And I was really sad that at the end of our travels the wheelchair assistance helper told me that I did not give him enough! Also don't forget to add in the cost of the ticket, and if you have to pay for luggage to and fro.

    • @AverageMe

      I'm sad to hear that, as well. Although I like to tip generously when I can, it's out of line for someone to say that. We all do the best we can, and it's s service, and gratuity is "extra".

      Hi and thank you for your help. I do have a question and my apologies if this is a silly question. But, when I get off of a flight and have requested assistance, when you’re waiting for a person with a wheelchair do I just walk up to one of them and say I need one or do they know a head who it’s for?

    • @swa97
      @swa97 2 месяца назад

      @SouthernGospelLady At my company, we have tablets that tell us how many wheelchair passengers there are on a particular flight. The passengers name shows up and it helps to make sure that we have enough chairs for everyone. It's not necessary but it helps keep passengers from having to wait for a chair if no one knew they were coming. They may ask for your boarding pass but that's just because our company gets paid per chair. There is no cost to you, and you can always ask for assistance even if it is not in your reservation. Having that note on your reservation just make everyone's life easier. Hope this helps.

      @@SouthernGospelLadyIf they're in the jet bridge waiting for you, they'll gladly assist. We have passengers that have the note but walk off the plane simply because they needed the extra time to board and get situated. We call that "jet bridge jesus" on the receiving end of the flight.

    It's quite interesting to see how this works in different parts of the world. I have a lot of experience with assistance in Europe, and it's quite different here! Some of the things are the same, but there are also some big differences. For tourists flying into Europe, this might be good to know as well. For example most airports have to have their own assistance service and you have ato go to a service desk or machine. Tips are also not common at all either.

      They will get you to the gate, where she will stay in her wheelchair. If you go to the lounge, I would ask the WC attendant how to contact them when it's time to go to the gate. Otherwise, they will have attendants to help move them down the jetway if needed when it's time to board.
      I recently traveled again with my father-in-law and we needed to get them several times as we had a long layover with bathroom visits, etc. and only had the airports wheelchairs. So I have to have a lot of cash on hand to tip each time.

      First, you want need a Dr.'s note, as the airport doesn't require it. Your word is enough. As for the carry on, they are VERY good at handling bags (there is space beneath the wheelchair, there are "hooks" from which they can hang things, and they can rest them in your lap). Additionally, they will get you through security more easily. Under the conditions you described, I would absolutely use the wheelchair service.

    I've been discriminated against for using a wheel chair on allegiant because I look fine. I don't look disabled. I'm in my 60s. I can walk, walk fairly fast, and have good balance, but long distance walking and standing in line for too long will cause me a great deal of pain.
    I've even seen you tube videos of people claiming that people fake a disability to get early boarding. I always pay for early boarding and seat selection. They don't look at your ticket before treating you poorly. I have to say that South West, so far, has treated me well when I asked for a wheel chair.
    I have started taking my walker because I need it at my destination, when I know I will have to walk some distance. Sometimes when I get my walker back from the airport a screw and bolt is missing, so I cannot use my walker until, I go buy a new screw to fix it. That gets frustrating too.
    Other then the disability issue, I love flying allegaiant. I like the small airports. They just need to talk to some of their employees about treating people who need wheel chairs or come with a walker, respect, even if they don't look disabled.

      @@proshowetsingerq7129 not true. That is why we get discriminated against because some of us do look fine. I now carry a note from my doctor that explains my illness. Not that anyone will bother to look at it before boarding. I've gotten to check in where it shows that I paid for early boarding and seat selection and I still have been treated like I was faking.
      I'm now in my 70s. I have bone on bone in my foot. The doctor told me to take Glucosamine capsules and drink bone broth everyday and that will help with the pain. That has helped some.
      I can walk fine and I have good balance. I just deal with pain when standing in one spot for too long or walking much distance..
      The weather seems to have some effect too.. Cold rainy days are worse.. Some days are not real bad, other days are real bad.. I never know. Ive always paid for early boarding and seat selection, so I don't want anything for free.
      I stopped flying. I much prefer Amtrak, now that I'm retired and have the time. It's much easier then flying and so far I have not been discriminated against.

    Very informative video. I am traveling from U.K. to LAX. Because I am unable to carry two suitcases & push a wheelchair would Assistance Help be willing to take us to a taxi rank?

      They typically take you as far as baggage claim. They may take you to taxi stand if you ask them. Ours took my father in law all the way to our rental car!

    Flight attendants on some airline will assist with stowing the bags in the overhead. I use the assistance service for navigation due to low vision. Once I am familiar with a given airport I can get away without using the service.

      Thanks for the ccomment, Bluetheta. Yes they will, but it shouldn't be expected of them, nor is it a required job function. Most do it as a courtesy or just to expedite the boarding process.

    Hi. I'm from the UK we recently travelled to Mexico. We used Tui airlines and fat track. We had to get ourselves through the airport, on arrival to mexico assistance was waiting for us at the bottom of the aircraft steps, luckily my sister was travelling with us to help us. the assistance person told us to go to passport control which we did then it was ages until we found my husband, we had his passport. My question is, what if i had been on my own.! honestly i would have had a heart attack being separated from my husband, how do I get to stay with him

      No, you can print your boarding pass at home. But since you're using Wheelchair Assist anyway, you may as well let them do it for you.

    Just remember you're not really on your own because they have assistance with wheelchairs that they will switch you from one to another wheelchair and put you in the plane if you cannot walk they will have another wheelchair it's very thin you sit down they strap you up And if you have a bag you hold on to it when your arms are crossed and they will pull the chair till you get to your seat then they will release the strap and hope you get on your seat just remember that hes not saying that here on his video but yes they do that because they did that to me and plus when you go On a wheelchair they get you by security And on the way to your gate you could tow them can you stop at the store at the airport shop and you could buy a soda you could buy a few thing you want to buy Even McDonald's if you want to buy they will stay with you at all times but once you get to the gate area will sit you down on the chair and they will leave and Into your name is call they'll get another wheelchair Sit you down and line you up To get you towards the plane You could also tell them I like to change my seat please they will talk to the ticket counter at the gate area And they will change your seat like they did to me they game Mia windows seat because I told them I cannot stand up every time1 So the ticket counter on the gate area Help me out and gave me a window seat Then the person Pushed the wheelchair when it was time to board I was the 1st one on the plane push me towards the door where they had somebody wait in with and then we'll chair where they strapped me up and took me to my seat and I tipped them it was Wonderful

    • @AverageMe
      @AverageMe  Год назад

      Not sure what you mean. Are you bringing your own WC? If so, it'll have to be checked and you'll likely use an airport chair to get to and from boarding . An aisle chair is for people who have no ability to go down the aisle. It literally gets a person to their airplane seat.

    Some airlines will do it for you so that is incorrect what you're saying sir OK because they put my carry on I did not have to pay $30 to check in my bag thank you and the other bag that I had my personal book back they gave it to me I put it underneath the seat everything was OK didn't have no problem at all on Delta airlines so you're incorrect

  • @vilmaramos2348
    @vilmaramos2348 Год назад

    That is not true because they took my bag and they put it on the overhead compartment on the plane so that is not true the flight attendant took my carry on back and put it on the over coapartment with no problem at all so that is not true what you're saying

    • @AverageMe
      @AverageMe  Год назад +2

      Some flight attendants will do it, either as a favor or to expedite boarding. However, they are not REQUIRED to help passengers with luggage, and it is not part of their job duties. If a FA helps you in that manner, please view it as a courtesy and favor, and thank them!

      Which airport? I have always tipped assistance and have NEVER been told otherwise. Tips have always been accepted. In 10 years of traveling for business, every business traveler I know has always tipped. I'd love to hear more about your airport; that is quite unusual, and is certainly not the standard across the industry.

      @@AverageMe amsterdam.. most of the people will take it. But if the see you take it. You will be fired on spot. If you say no to a tip and they really want you to take it. You have to take it and call your supervisor and then you have to give it to them. And they will give it to a charity end of the year. Some colleagues will snitch on you if they see you take a tip and nog call the supervisor. Its at your own risk

    the part about no carry on is not true,, most people the are disabled have meds that have to be on the plane,,also the wheelchair battery if lithium also has to be in the cabin and the pilot notified, i fly with my chair and they not only put my carry on away but they also carry it onto the plane when i turn my chair over to them at the plane door, i have even gone international by myself, they assist you through customs as well,,, do not be afraid to fly

    • @AverageMe
