As an ex-LEO, I'm often baffled by people who think every military serviceman and LEO is somehow a masterful John Wick with firearms. Nothing could be further from the truth. In our agency, of the 500 agents at my station, I would see maybe 20-30 of them at the range on off days doing drills and becoming more proficient, etc. The rest just managed to get through qualifications (sometimes with remedials), etc. Short of being a special boy in a special unit, I've seen far more competent civilian shooters than my average co-workers.

That's a very true statement you hear about ex military ex officers taking their own life's since they feel guilty or like they were the cause if 1 person died from this evil person because they didn't kill him earlier. But a coping to that is that instead of himself killing one bad person the bad person didn't kill 10x that in innocent people.

Did a similar drill with buddies yesterday. Moved from a seated position to drag a heavy bag and get rounds on in under 15 seconds at a 40 yard target. Exactly! This is the correct drill. WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP SAYING THAT HE SHOT 10 ROUNDS IN 15 SECONDS?! HE DID NOT! He shot the killer 15 seconds AFTER the killer started shooting. Which means that in those 15 seconds he: One, got his girlfriend out of harms way. Two, drew his weapon. Three, found cover. Four, found his sight picture. Five, then shot ten rounds at 40 yards. Which means those ten shots, from first to last shot, most likely happened in less than 5 seconds.
@@jejoko under stress at a moving target too. For every miss we were doing a 40 yard shuffle with a 30lb weight there and back. Trying to simulate some grip strength fatigue and getting the heart rate up. We did the same dry fire about 30 min prior with weights bag and jump rope. So we had the fatigue simulated somewhat, but we had practice reps in. This guy did it cold start and stopped the threat, most likely in under 5 like you said, props to him for sure.

I set up my range similarly right after his story was released. I have a similar drill called the "Church shot" and set up chairs so we can simulate drawing while seated and neutralizing a bad guy at 40 yards.

In a stressful situation, where you have to decide if you are justified in shooting, if there is someone in front of the target that could be caught in crossfire, behind the target that could be collateral, is there property behind the target that you’re going to damage, With adrenaline rushing through your body. The dude did an incredible job of making the decision so quickly, drawing and then being so accurate from such a distance. Properly impressive! I also love that he hasnt used this to springboard into some sort of internet fame. I havent seen him interviewed once by the news. There was a guy just like him who helped after an officer was pounced on by a psycho with a knife (who ultimately murdered him on body cam), and a young guy driving by saw it happen, got out of his car, drew, and engaged the dude still atop the officer. Absolutely insane time we live in.

I think the most impressive part about this isn't 8/10 40 yard shots within 15 seconds. It's that he was able to identify an unknown target, draw and take aim, and then hit those shots in that time while chaos erupting and the immediate threat of death put pressure on him.

I’m taking my concealed carry class tomorrow, I’ve told a couple of my closest friends, they think it’s “ridiculous” and “unnecessary”. I told my dad and he said the same thing. Now I’m like kind of scared to tell people and I’m worried if I ever have to use my gun everyone in my life would testify against me and make shit up about me simply because they don’t like guns. Just ran this drill this morning, it's probably the best drill to train for an active shooter event. On a flat range I think 8/10 cold in 10 seconds is a better standard to replicate the stress. Eli Dicken did everything right and set the standard that CCW needs to train to.
Don't forget you are on a range with no civilians, you already know you're going to shoot, and no one's likely to shoot back at you. You need to handicap yourself to offset the stress you would feel if it were real.
There should be no standards for CCW because their shouldn’t be such thing as CCW. Beyond the common sense standard of safely handling and shooting a gun, that’s all you “need”. The more training the better but it should never be required and once you set standards you’re a step below requirements. Unless you mean your personal standards you’ll set on yourself in which case I’m just ranting about our rights.

I was one of those skeptics 29 years ago. I supported the 2A, but scoffed at my twin brother for carrying concealed because I didn't have a wife and kids like he did. I never married or had kids, but I learned more about the danger that's out there and my responsibility to protect myself from it. I've concealed carried for the last 13 years.

I'd describe myself as firmly in the left but I love Mike's humor and I think guns are fascinating pieces of art more than anything else. That said, probably for different reasons than most I want my CCL. Like they said in the video, police don't seem to respond to these situations effectively, (my local department is fucking awful even as things go in 2022) so yeah that resonated with me. I consistently train out to 40 yards with all of my handguns. After seeing Charlie and Mike make 60+ look easy I gotta step my numbers up. By the way seeing Charlie be so serious gave me chills.

@@murkyturkey5238 Push yourself comfortably, homie. If you have to go up in 2-3 yard intervals, do it. No logical person would ever rip on you for taking the time to improve your marksmanship. You can match their 60 yards before you know it if you give it time and practice.
it hurts me as an American, that this young man hasn't been made a hero. not only did he take advantage of his training... his girlfriend also took matters into her own hands, and did everything she could to help the wounded. :) two angels in one place needed when they were needed.
I live in Indiana not 20 minutes away from Greenwood. I open and conceal carry well before this incident, and will continue to do so well after. The sad truth is that some of my family members think I am crazy and despite what happened in the town next to me their mindset sadly hasn't changed. Dry fire training is an excellent cost effective training exercise. It especially helps you get rid of a lot of bad form and handling problems before you stress test yourself with live ammo. I have never been in a gun fight, I don't want to, I would rather diffuse the situation peaceful if at all possible, but if push comes to shove I want to survive. That dirt bag in Greenwood got what he deserved and the guy who put him 6 feet under is a stellar example to us all.
They most likely think you’re crazy because you support things that allowed the shooter to easily obtain a weapon he has no business owning, due to a variety of factors. It’s not supernatural, you’re just self absorbed.
Airsoft guns are nice for training indoors. Of course they don't have the kick of a real 9mm, but you get the mechanics of the draw down to muscle memory. Part of the draw is moving the shirt out of the way.

Prior to constitutional carry, the age at which you could obtain a legal license to carry a handgun in the State of Indiana was 18. My mother bought me my first handgun, and I've carried since the age of 19. Regardless, I'm proud of my fellow Hoosier for this incredible act of bravery. And of my state, and local law enforcement for their conduct and coverage durning this crisis. The way in which they portrayed Mr. Dicken was professional and accurate. WE NEED TO SEE MORE OF THIS.

We should still be talking about Uvalde, not shifting focus to "maybe guns are good in the right hands". Yes heroes are good and they do exist. But Eli is 1 in 1000. He is an exception to the rule. It's a reason to offer him work in law enforcement or military. Not a reason to hand out guns to people too lazy to train. People with poor judgement. People with their own anger issues. Guns are an absolute last resort. Eli miraculously realised what was happening, identified the threat, took aim and ended the situation. That is exceptional even for a trained officer. Most people don't realise the amount of judgement that needs to happen before firing a gun. It's not always easy to understand the situation in the heat of the moment. Imagine if someone walked into the area as Eli was firing. Maybe they think he is also a mad gunman and start firing at him. They are all working with no background information at that point. That's why police wear uniforms. Things can get very ugly with every civilian holding guns and nobody announcing their intentions.

And speaking of Uvalde, the utter cowardice of the officers there shows us that we cannot rely on the government for protection. We need less "Gun Free Zones" that are essentially extremely soft targets that don't have instant response times in security. Right after Uvalde, there was a criminal in West Virginia who decided to open fire at a graduation party in a park where they were tons of little kids and families, A lady attending the party shot the would be murderer before anyone was hurt and killed him. Eli is in fact not 1 in a thousand, Armed citizens have saved countless lives from potential mass shooters but never get recognized because the media never reports on it, and usually the bad guys are stopped before they hurt others. So it doesn't have the shock headline appeal that the ghouls in the media love so much.

This is very true. As a civilian, I have found myself in two gunfights, well technically two, as I was an active participant in only one of them. I can shoot as well as just about anybody I've seen, but in my little fracas I wasn't able to put lead on target. In my defense, the distance of said engagement was a bit of a stretch for my little Marlin .22lr at 250-300 yards, but I've made shots at that distance before while not under duress. The fact is that it's hard to hit someone when you are actually trying to take them out.

Guys, this actually happened back in the 1980s in TN. The guy was in a land dispute with my uncle and he had been pulling guns on people and making threats since it began. On this particular day he shot at my cousin and I with a shotgun. We were far enough away that the pellets did little more than burn us up, but I damn sure emptied the marlin at his ass. I've been shooting since I was 3yo, and I am currently 47. My instructor is a hard assed US Army combat vet and drill sergeant that I call Dad. So guys believe it or not it doesn't bother me, but it is the truth.

I'm the first one to own a gun in my family, half my family thinks its crazy I even own a gun. Everything I've learned has been from the internet, random guys at the range, and just figuring it out myself. My state is one of the ones that only just became 'shall issue' for carry permits and you can best believe I applied for it as soon as I could. Since applying, I've been at the range at least once a week because if I'm going to carry, I need to know my abilities and limits as well as my weapon's abilities and limits. Don't train until you get it right, train until you can't fail.
Going to the range and training are not the same. I would recommend you take a class from a proven professional. Valor Ridge and Reid Heinrichs comes to mind. I have been there many times.

I’ve found this channel a little bit ago and the part where they talked about family calling Dicken crazy struck with me. I am the first in my family who believes, practices, and actually CC yet my family call me insane and stupid for carrying. Situations like this is why I believe in carrying I would rather it be them than me, the people around me, or the innocents around me.
Keep training, stay vigilant, stay savage. I guarantee if you ever have to defend them (hopefully never but as we've seen hope doesnt do much for real life) they'll change their tone very quickly and be grateful that you were prepared when they weren't.

I love how you guys mentioned the military thing. If someone does something heroic or skilled with a firearm people think automatically they have a military background and it irritates the piss out of me. Some people are just naturally brave and good under pressure and you don’t have to be special ops with a 500 body tactical confirmed kill count to prove it.
In my experience, passionate civilian shooters are better (on average) than ex-mil and current/ex LEO. Heck, we’ve seen the videos of the officers doing their quals and it’s embarrassing. Add in that the LEOs are often (not always) physically out of shape, and I’d almost always take a passionate civilian over an average MIl/leo
Absolutely. This needs to be made common knowledge. Military or LE experience does not automatically equal shooting, or even fighting, competence. And there are a whole lot of civilians out there who take their and their family's safety seriously, train, practice, and prepare more, and more diligently, than soldiers or cops. This isn't meant to take away anything from the soldiers and cops who do take their training and such seriously, they're out there too and often at a higher concentration than in the general population. But this idea that is often perpetuated that mil or LE experience or training is needed for someone to really be the best needs to be eliminated.
@@OFFICIALUND I use to be in law enforcement and when we qualified with our duty weapon “Glock 21” we fired 3 mags and that was it from standing at 20 yards. No running, weapons manipulations, no night training. And we only had to do that twice a year. People think of the name more than the person. No disrespect to the military, but I’ve seen some of them shoot and their form/technique. And, you can usually tell the ones apart that’s never shot a gun before.
He was actually carrying under Indiana’s constitutional carry law which just went into effect on July 1st. He is most definitely the definition of a hero and undoubtedly saved countless lives. Love that you guys did this video on him.

He broke a rule, not a law. The mall's RULE does not have the weight of LAW. And that rule didn't stop that mass murderer, it only gave him a hunting ground with a bunch of defenseless targets (or so he thought!). A good guy with a gun stopped him and assured that he'd never be able to do it again.
If an evil person can bring a gun to no fight (and then start one), but you (as law-abiding citizen) can't...that is when tyranny and tragedy occur. LEOs are ONLY reactive (they can only be proactive in authoritarian POS places like China): somebody shoots up a cafe, a school, a park...LEOs show up AFTER the fact. You get in a car accident...and then they show up. Somebody breaks into your home to steal your shit and murder your family...then 45min later they show up after the fact. That period between the crazy shit happening and them showing up...your life is 100% in your own hands in those moments: no god out there, no law, no theorizing matters in those moments: its a matter of 'Do or Die'.

You talking about your dad teaching you to shoot 22 in the backyard really resonated with me, brought a tear to my eye in fact, My dad taught me to be a marksman with his 22 rifle when I was knee high. I'm 24 and I lost him when I was 19, I carry everywhere I go and I'm currently in the process of joining the military. I hope that he's proud of the man he built me up to be. Thanks to all the dads everywhere, including you, who make sure that their kids will be well and shoot well after they are gone.
That story hit for me too. Though less impressive, my dad taught me with a pump BB gun. It was one of the many ways he helped me grow into a man. I knew firearms safety and a good degree of proficiency before I joined the Army over three decades ago

There's some chain of comments where a bunch of people are saying it's not that impressive, but honestly I don't think whether or not his shots were impressive was that important. This kid wasn't an LEO, or military, or what have you, he was a random guy with a legally acquired, legally carried gun. And he did what dozens of Cops in Uvalde wouldn't do. He engaged the Shooter, stopped his killing spree short, and saved people. Whether you could make 8/10 at 40 yards or not, this kid was brave enough to stop a horrible act in it's tracks. That's what I think is important, that he showed a young person, when given the opportunity and the means, is capable of stopping this sort of event in seconds instead of hours. It's a harsh rebuke of pretty much every Gun Control talking point. Gun Free Zone didn't do anything, cops didn't get there in time, and the person who stopped the horror was able to do so due to Constitutional Carry. That's why they keep trying to spin this like he's a bad guy.
In my opinion both sides don't want that topic to big in the media. The left for obvious reasons... they don't want to accept that guns can safe lifes. The right because it obviously raises other questions. Yes, the laws made it possible for Eli to save lives with his gun (and even the biggest gun haters should respect and praise him for that), BUT those same laws are also partly to blame for the killer having to be stopped by a model citizen in the first place. The US definitely needs to find a way to tighten its gun laws, get guns out of the wrong hands, and still give model citizens like Eli the opportunity to use them.... A very difficult task...

My Grandfather fought in WW2 and The Battle of the Bulge. He once told me..”Find a gun that’s your favorite and shoot as much as you can.. in a short time that gun will be another part of you.”
1911's for me. I know people hate on it a lot. Saying sand gets in grip safeties. Safety switch gets in the way. Bad round for accuracy and range. But I never run into those problems and the thumb safety is useful because if you hold it down your aim is steadier on handed. And the end result is you tend not to miss, and the round is more capable than most of the shooters hating on it. It has a ballistic and a learning curve. And every gun has a personality. Two 1911's could be made back to back and they still won't behave the same. Finding one with a personality you like and understand will push the capabilities of you, the gun, and the round to the limit of what's possible in a consistently possible
@@hf117j 1911s are surgically precise with that 5 inch barrel. As long as you train with them, you'll be fine. Micro compacts like most carry, require far more effort to become deadly proficient with. I carry a 365XL and it's a great gun but requires the training and marksmanship from its user to be of any use.
@@hf117j I’ve carried a 1911 for 10 years now. I love it. It just feels right in my hands. The only true downside is capacity. I live in Florida and carry every time I step out of the house. Two extra mags, a phone, and a wallet don’t fit in boardshorts very well. I have pondered going to the Glock 19 or sig p320 but every time I hold that 1911 I remember why I don’t.
Training with that gun is most important, and I don't mean just shooting. Hitting a paper target on a nice sunny day is very different from being in a situation where you're scared, your heart rate is through the roof. If you don't work on your own fitness, breathing and moving with your firearms under stressful situations you may as well not have a gun.
My father tried to train me but unfortunately he died. Luckily thorough the help of Lucas Botkin, JJ racaza,Travis Haley, You and many others. I was able to train myself based on their techniques . Thank you for allowing me to continue the ways of my forefathers to preserve the constitution, liberty and freedom.
Thanks for the video. Training is so important. Like anything else we use in our lives, knowing how to properly use a weapon and being proficient at it just makes good sense. Think about how long it took you to get proficient at driving an automobile and how much training went into that before you were able to do it safely and efficiently. And most of us continue to practice by driving everyday. We should have the same mindset when using a firearm. Excellent drills. I’m a former Navy Master at Arms who forward deployed during OIF. Plenty of trigger time during my hay day, but your message resonates with me big time, training is everything and nobody is coming to save you. The kid wasn’t affiliated with any agency or branch of service, but he was trained, and his training saved lives. I have been in that mall dozens of times. I know the exact lay out of where Mr. Dicken and his girlfriend were when this event unfolded. I am beyond impressed with how well both of them accomplished this massive undertaking. No experience in combat, law enforcement, or any formal tactical training. His grandfather taught him firearm safety and practices. His girlfriend is in nursing school and should unbelievable triage skills that helps save someone’s life. Beyond thankful and wish them peace and a beautiful future.

Ever since "The Summer of Love" I've been going twice a month to the range to practice with my Walther PPQ M2 TACT. Also was able to get a female friend, her sister, and her mom to get a gun each and train as well. Amazed and proud how far they've come.
My mother is CCW trained, as well as possesses one, but I am not, nor do I possess one, namely because of pre-existing mental, emotional, psychological, and developmental issues that are in my life, but at least a. I respect myself to know that I am dangerous enough of a person to possess firearms, b. due to said issues, I may not be able to be a good shot anyway, c. I would most properly not be able to take care of said firearm, as previously said issues would interfere in maintaining proper gun safety, d. despite all of those things, I will still respect the right to bear arms, and, e. I would only utilize the usage of guns if I literally have no option left, and if I pray to YAHWEH EL ELOHIM that my aim be true upon my targets.
I have spent 14 years of my life in some type of uniform. A decade in the Corps, and the rest as a cop. In three Afghan pumps, two garbage ass MEU's, and an untold number of dumpster fire calls on patrol, I have learned one thing. The United States governments security apparatus, from the halls of the pentagon, to Quantico, to your local Police department, is not capable of protecting anyone or anything. Go to Edson range or Stone Bay and look at the shooting and you will want to eat your own gun after. Observe your local police acadamy and you will spend six hours in the shower, drinking Coors, praying for death. These entities are proficient at two things, and two things only. Talking about themselves and how brilliant and courageous they are, and creating bureaucracy to further their own goals. You are your own responder. Nobody, not one, in a uniform cares more for you or your family more than you. At most your emergency is a Stat, at worst an inconvenience.

Dude got zero media coverage but they try to deify every murderer. It’s also another point of stress Eli had to deal with… being mistaken for the killer, on top of being shot at, having dead already on the ground and innocent people, including his gf, depending on only him. Channels like this and Brandon Herrera have done well getting Eli’s name out there and hopefully in the future every “Good guy/girl with a gun” will get their just due.
Thank you for talking about Hurley. I had never heard of this story and it honestly sickens me that it got such little coverage to honor his heroic actions. His family must be so proud to know that he took such courageous actions to stop the threat.

Don’t carry the hurt too long, acknowledge that you and your dad, are from different eras…and your decision to carry with GOOD intent, is the only way to be. my father is retiring after a lifetime of civil service (army-LEO-federal) and used to look at me the same way, until he heard of my foiling a robbery string as a civilian. I’ve carried from the age of 21(I’m 44 now) after leaving the military and it IS your right to protect you, and innocents should you accept. Just be responsible.

You probably are also unaware how how many rounds from a handgun it takes to bring someone down. Some people go down with one shot of 22, others may absorb 15 rounds of 9mm and keep fighting, especially if they're on PCP or meth/other drugs. Who cares how many times he shot? It could have been 1, could have been 20, if the outcome was the same who really cares? He unequivocally saved other people's lives. I don't agree with killing in general, but someone had to take the shooter down and better someone that was there immediately rather than waiting on law enforcement to respond and more people dying.
I am an Indiana resident and I have had my license to carry since I was 18. I however could not legally purchase a handgun until I was 21. My dad however was legally allowed to "loan" me one.
My wife and I went to the range yesterday, and we practiced something we never do, and that was hitting a target at 40yds with our carry pistols. Hers is a Walther PPS, mine a G48. Thanks to Mr. Dickens, I'm betting many people are doing the same.
@The Trashman Someone finally got it right. This entire story has been embellished and exaggerated since the very beginning. It was nowhere near a 40 yard shot first of all. Next he is so traumatized and shaken up with PTSD like symptoms he can't even give a coherent interview to the media. Also this young kid just started carrying...where would he have gotten these kinds of skills to outdo those of us doing this over 40 years? You just don't wake up one morning suddenly becoming Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan or Eddie Van Halen. That takes years and years of constant practice. A "hero" and has a wikipedia page, Rock Star fame and drills named after him in only 1 week. I find that very disrespectful to both myself and other Veterans.
There is one thing I know, and that's when it's a life or death situation, the human body is alot better. Eli saved alot of lives. 8/10 at 40 yards is astounding.
The first firearm I ever trained on was with my dad. He took me to the range with his Glock .40 cal and taught me "The 4". We worked on marksmanship, safety, proper handling, room clearing, etc. Soon after, I signed up for the rifle shooting team at high school for JROTC, then basic training, and now self-training as often as possible. It is a necessary skill, whether you think so or not. I have drawn my firearm on another person and I pray I never have to, but if that time ever comes, I will know that I can do what I must to save myself or others.
I want to buy my M1 Carbine someday, That's the first gun I became intrested in as a child since it was used during first in World War II then the Korean and Vietnam Wars
We also have to remember, Mr. Dicken was also using a pillar in the mall for support and cover. Also, his girlfriend was studying to be a Nurse. She rendered aid to the victims that were shot. So I say they both were heroes!
The target was also moving so until I see that replicated the guy is next level.

For real. My local indoor range (24/7, it's nice) only goes back to 15 yards. I'm going to need to get another membership elsewhere to train those bigger distances.

As an ex-LEO, I'm often baffled by people who think every military serviceman and LEO is somehow a masterful John Wick with firearms. Nothing could be further from the truth. In our agency, of the 500 agents at my station, I would see maybe 20-30 of them at the range on off days doing drills and becoming more proficient, etc. The rest just managed to get through qualifications (sometimes with remedials), etc. Short of being a special boy in a special unit, I've seen far more competent civilian shooters than my average co-workers.

That's a very true statement you hear about ex military ex officers taking their own life's since they feel guilty or like they were the cause if 1 person died from this evil person because they didn't kill him earlier. He shot the killer 15 seconds AFTER the killer started shooting.
Which means that in those 15 seconds he:
One, got his girlfriend out of harms way.
Two, drew his weapon.
Three, found cover.
Four, found his sight picture.
Five, then shot ten rounds at 40 yards.
Which means those ten shots, from first to last shot, most likely happened in less than 5 seconds.
@@jejoko under stress at a moving target too. For every miss we were doing a 40 yard shuffle with a 30lb weight there and back. Trying to simulate some grip strength fatigue and getting the heart rate up. We did the same dry fire about 30 min prior with weights bag and jump rope. So we had the fatigue simulated somewhat, but we had practice reps in. This guy did it cold start and stopped the threat, most likely in under 5 like you said, props to him for sure.

In a stressful situation, where you have to decide if you are justified in shooting, if there is someone in front of the target that could be caught in crossfire, behind the target that could be collateral, is there property behind the target that you’re going to damage, With adrenaline rushing through your body. The dude did an incredible job of making the decision so quickly, drawing and then being so accurate from such a distance. Properly impressive!
I also love that he hasnt used this to springboard into some sort of internet fame. I havent seen him interviewed once by the news. There was a guy just like him who helped after an officer was pounced on by a psycho with a knife (who ultimately murdered him on body cam), and a young guy driving by saw it happen, got out of his car, drew, and engaged the dude still atop the officer.

I think the most impressive part about this isn't 8/10 40 yard shots within 15 seconds. It's that he was able to identify an unknown target, draw and take aim, and then hit those shots in that time while chaos erupting and the immediate threat of death put pressure on him.

Just ran this drill this morning, it's probably the best drill to train for an active shooter event. On a flat range I think 8/10 cold in 10 seconds is a better standard to replicate the stress.

Don't forget you are on a range with no civilians, you already know you're going to shoot, and no one's likely to shoot back at you. You need to handicap yourself to offset the stress you would feel if it were real.

There should be no standards for CCW because their shouldn’t be such thing as CCW. Beyond the common sense standard of safely handling and shooting a gun, that’s all you “need”. The more training the better but it should never be required and once you set standards you’re a step below requirements.

I was one of those skeptics 29 years ago. I supported the 2A, but scoffed at my twin brother for carrying concealed because I didn't have a wife and kids like he did. I never married or had kids, but I learned more about the danger that's out there and my responsibility to protect myself from it. I've concealed carried for the last 13 years.

I'd describe myself as firmly in the left but I love Mike's humor and I think guns are fascinating pieces of art more than anything else. That said, probably for different reasons than most I want my CCL. Like they said in the video, police don't seem to respond to these situations effectively, (my local department is fucking awful even as things go in 2022) so yeah that resonated with me. Just glad he keeps the political shit out but looking at the actions of my local department and my own encounters with them I really realize that nobody will come to help.

Mr.Dicken deserves high praise for his forethought to be strapped as well as the efficient way he neutralized the active shooter who was prepared to kill many people...the untold lives Mr. Dicken saved is huge. Kudos to Dicken's Grandpa for teaching and training his grandson so he was able to choose to step up to preserve life with the tools and skills to do so!
Respect and gratitude to Mr. Dicken and his grandfather, but lets not forget Mr. Dicken's gf was also on scene and was training to be a nurse (from what i gather, could be wrong). She chose to stay as well and render medical aid to those who were injured. Respect and honor to all 3 of them, and anyone else who helped in the training of them.
I consistently train out to 40 yards with all of my handguns. After seeing Charlie and Mike make 60+ look easy I gotta step my numbers up. By the way seeing Charlie be so serious gave me chills.

I live in Indiana not 20 minutes away from Greenwood. I open and conceal carry well before this incident, and will continue to do so well after. The sad truth is that some of my family members think I am crazy and despite what happened in the town next to me their mindset sadly hasn't changed. Dry fire training is an excellent cost effective training exercise. It especially helps you get rid of a lot of bad form and handling problems before you stress test yourself with live ammo. I have never been in a gun fight, I don't want to, I would rather diffuse the situation peaceful if at all possible, but if push comes to shove I want to survive. That dirt bag in Greenwood got what he deserved and the guy who put him 6 feet under is a stellar example to us all.
They most likely think you’re crazy because you support things that allowed the shooter to easily obtain a weapon he has no business owning, due to a variety of factors.

Airsoft guns are nice for training indoors. Of course they don't have the kick of a real 9mm, but you get the mechanics of the draw down to muscle memory. Part of the draw is moving the shirt out of the way.

Absolutely love this, he deserves all of the praise in the world. I was born and raised in Indiana and frequently shopped with family and friends at Greenwood Park Mall the whole time I lived there (20yrs). Elijah makes me an unbelievably proud Hoosier.
I was at that mall a month prior with my family who live down near Indy, I'm up by Lake Michigan. When the news broke, I immediately called my family down there

We do seem to be at an almost "perfect storm" moment here at the intersection of Uvalde and Dicken to demonstrate how much we are responsible for our own safety.
Cops are never capable of saving you inless they're off duty a d happen to be standing right next to you and are proficient tmwith their firearm. The rest of them simply respond to crimes after they've already begun.

We should still be talking about Uvalde, not shifting focus to "maybe guns are good in the right hands". Yes heroes are good and they do exist. But Eli is 1 in 1000. He is an exception to the rule. It's a reason to offer him work in law enforcement or military. Not a reason to hand out guns to people too lazy to train. People with poor judgement. People with their own anger issues. Guns are an absolute last resort. Eli miraculously realised what was happening, identified the threat, took aim and ended the situation. That is exceptional even for a trained officer. Most people don't realise the amount of judgement that needs to happen before firing a gun. It's not always easy to understand the situation in the heat of the moment. Imagine if someone walked into the area as Eli was firing. Maybe they think he is also a mad gunman and start firing at him. They are all working with no background information at that point. That's why police wear uniforms. Things can get very ugly with every civilian holding guns and nobody announcing their intentions.

Right after Uvalde, there was a criminal in West Virginia who decided to open fire at a graduation party in a park where they were tons of little kids and families, A lady attending the party shot the would be murderer before anyone was hurt and killed him. This is very true. As a civilian, I have found myself in two gunfights, well technically two, as I was an active participant in only one of them. I can shoot as well as just about anybody I've seen, but in my little fracas I wasn't able to put lead on target. In my defense, the distance of said engagement was a bit of a stretch for my little Marlin .22lr at 250-300 yards, but I've made shots at that distance before while not under duress. The fact is that it's hard to hit someone when you are actually trying to take them out.

Guys, this actually happened back in the 1980s in TN. The guy was in a land dispute with my uncle and he had been pulling guns on people and making threats since it began. On this particular day he shot at my cousin and I with a shotgun. We were far enough away that the pellets did little more than burn us up, but I damn sure emptied the marlin at his ass. I've been shooting since I was 3yo, and I am currently 47. My instructor is a hard assed US Army combat vet and drill sergeant that I call Dad. So guys believe it or not it doesn't bother me, but it is the truth.

I'm the first one to own a gun in my family, half my family thinks its crazy I even own a gun. Everything I've learned has been from the internet, random guys at the range, and just figuring it out myself. My state is one of the ones that only just became 'shall issue' for carry permits and you can best believe I applied for it as soon as I could. Since applying, I've been at the range at least once a week because if I'm going to carry, I need to know my abilities and limits as well as my weapon's abilities and limits. Don't train until you get it right, train until you can't fail.
Going to the range and training are not the same. I would recommend you take a class from a proven professional. Valor Ridge and Reid Heinrichs comes to mind. I have been there many times.

I’ve found this channel a little bit ago and the part where they talked about family calling Dicken crazy struck with me. I am the first in my family who believes, practices, and actually CC yet my family call me insane and stupid for carrying. Situations like this is why I believe in carrying I would rather it be them than me, the people around me, or the innocents around me.
Keep training, stay vigilant, stay savage. I guarantee if you ever have to defend them (hopefully never but as we've seen hope doesnt do much for real life) they'll change their tone very quickly and be grateful that you were prepared when they weren't.

If someone does something heroic or skilled with a firearm people think automatically they have a military background and it irritates the piss out of me. In my experience, passionate civilian shooters are better (on average) than ex-mil and current/ex LEO. Heck, we’ve seen the videos of the officers doing their quals and it’s embarrassing. Add in that the LEOs are often (not always) physically out of shape, and I’d almost always take a passionate civilian over an average MIl/leo

Absolutely. This needs to be made common knowledge. Military or LE experience does not automatically equal shooting, or even fighting, competence. And there are a whole lot of civilians out there who take their and their family's safety seriously, train, practice, and prepare more, and more diligently, than soldiers or cops. This isn't meant to take away anything from the soldiers and cops who do take their training and such seriously, they're out there too and often at a higher concentration than in the general population. But this idea that is often perpetuated that mil or LE experience or training is needed for someone to really be the best needs to be eliminated.
@@OFFICIALUND I use to be in law enforcement and when we qualified with our duty weapon “Glock 21” we fired 3 mags and that was it from standing at 20 yards. No running, weapons manipulations, no night training. And we only had to do that twice a year. People think of the name more than the person. No disrespect to the military, but I’ve seen some of them shoot and their form/technique. And, you can usually tell the ones apart that’s never shot a gun before.
He was actually carrying under Indiana’s constitutional carry law which just went into effect on July 1st. He is most definitely the definition of a hero and undoubtedly saved countless lives. Love that you guys did this video on him.

I'm 24 and I lost him when I was 19, I carry everywhere I go and I'm currently in the process of joining the military. I hope that he's proud of the man he built me up to be. I wonder how many trained “professionals “ could have done what Elijah did under these exact circumstances. I’ve seen cops discharge 15 rounds and never hit anything. Also why is this not getting the national television coverage that it deserves? This should been plastered all over national,state, and local news! There's some chain of comments where a bunch of people are saying it's not that impressive, but honestly I don't think whether or not his shots were impressive was that important.
This kid wasn't an LEO, or military, or what have you, he was a random guy with a legally acquired, legally carried gun. And he did what dozens of Cops in Uvalde wouldn't do. He engaged the Shooter, stopped his killing spree short, and saved people. Whether you could make 8/10 at 40 yards or not, this kid was brave enough to stop a horrible act in it's tracks.
That's what I think is important, that he showed a young person, when given the opportunity and the means, is capable of stopping this sort of event in seconds instead of hours. It's a harsh rebuke of pretty much every Gun Control talking point. Gun Free Zone didn't do anything, cops didn't get there in time, and the person who stopped the horror was able to do so due to Constitutional Carry. That's why they keep trying to spin this like he's a bad guy.

Yes, the laws made it possible for Eli to save lives with his gun (and even the biggest gun haters should respect and praise him for that), BUT those same laws are also partly to blame for the killer having to be stopped by a model citizen in the first place.
The US definitely needs to find a way to tighten its gun laws, get guns out of the wrong hands, and still give model citizens like Eli the opportunity to use them.... A very difficult task...

My Grandfather fought in WW2 and The Battle of the Bulge. He once told me..”Find a gun that’s your favorite and shoot as much as you can.. in a short time that gun will be another part of you.”
1911's for me. I know people hate on it a lot. Saying sand gets in grip safeties. Safety switch gets in the way. Bad round for accuracy and range. But I never run into those problems and the thumb safety is useful because if you hold it down your aim is steadier on handed. And the end result is you tend not to miss, and the round is more capable than most of the shooters hating on it. It has a ballistic and a learning curve. And every gun has a personality. Two 1911's could be made back to back and they still won't behave the same. Finding one with a personality you like and understand will push the capabilities of you, the gun, and the round to the limit of what's possible in a consistently possible
@@hf117j 1911s are surgically precise with that 5 inch barrel. As long as you train with them, you'll be fine. Micro compacts like most carry, require far more effort to become deadly proficient with. I carry a 365XL and it's a great gun but requires the training and marksmanship from its user to be of any use.

@@hf117j I’ve carried a 1911 for 10 years now. I love it. It just feels right in my hands. The only true downside is capacity. I live in Florida and carry every time I step out of the house. Two extra mags, a phone, and a wallet don’t fit in boardshorts very well. I have pondered going to the Glock 19 or sig p320 but every time I hold that 1911 I remember why I don’t.
Training with that gun is most important, and I don't mean just shooting. Hitting a paper target on a nice sunny day is very different from being in a situation where you're scared, your heart rate is through the roof. If you don't work on your own fitness, breathing and moving with your firearms under stressful situations you may as well not have a gun.
My father tried to train me but unfortunately he died. Luckily thorough the help of Lucas Botkin, JJ racaza,Travis Haley, You and many others. I was able to train myself based on their techniques . Thank you for allowing me to continue the ways of my forefathers to preserve the constitution, liberty and freedom.
Thanks for the video. Training is so important. Like anything else we use in our lives, knowing how to properly use a weapon and being proficient at it just makes good sense. Think about how long it took you to get proficient at driving an automobile and how much training went into that before you were able to do it safely and efficiently. And most of us continue to practice by driving everyday. We should have the same mindset when using a firearm. Excellent drills. I’m a former Navy Master at Arms who forward deployed during OIF. Plenty of trigger time during my hay day, but your message resonates with me big time, training is everything and nobody is coming to save you. The kid wasn’t affiliated with any agency or branch of service, but he was trained, and his training saved lives. I have been in that mall dozens of times. I know the exact lay out of where Mr. Dicken and his girlfriend were when this event unfolded. I am beyond impressed with how well both of them accomplished this massive undertaking. No experience in combat, law enforcement, or any formal tactical training. His grandfather taught him firearm safety and practices. His girlfriend is in nursing school and should unbelievable triage skills that helps save someone’s life.

Ever since "The Summer of Love" I've been going twice a month to the range to practice with my Walther PPQ M2 TACT. Also was able to get a female friend, her sister, and her mom to get a gun each and train as well. Amazed and proud how far they've come.

My mother is CCW trained, as well as possesses one, but I am not, nor do I possess one, namely because of pre-existing mental, emotional, psychological, and developmental issues that are in my life, but at least a. I respect myself to know that I am dangerous enough of a person to possess firearms, b. due to said issues, I may not be able to be a good shot anyway, c. I would most properly not be able to take care of said firearm, as previously said issues would interfere in maintaining proper gun safety, d. despite all of those things, I will still respect the right to bear arms, and, e. I would only utilize the usage of guns if I literally have no option left, and if I pray to YAHWEH EL ELOHIM that my aim be true upon my targets.

I have spent 14 years of my life in some type of uniform. A decade in the Corps, and the rest as a cop. In three Afghan pumps, two garbage ass MEU's, and an untold number of dumpster fire calls on patrol, I have learned one thing. The United States governments security apparatus, from the halls of the pentagon, to Quantico, to your local Police department, is not capable of protecting anyone or anything. Go to Edson range or Stone Bay and look at the shooting and you will want to eat your own gun after. Observe your local police acadamy and you will spend six hours in the shower, drinking Coors, praying for death. These entities are proficient at two things, and two things only. Talking about themselves and how brilliant and courageous they are, and creating bureaucracy to further their own goals. You are your own responder. Nobody, not one, in a uniform cares more for you or your family more than you. At most your emergency is a Stat, at worst an inconvenience.

It’s also another point of stress Eli had to deal with… being mistaken for the killer, on top of being shot at, having dead already on the ground and innocent people, including his gf, depending on only him.

Great job to this kid and also want to say the RUclips gun community has been great at a couple things since this:
1. Giving the coverage to this hero that the mainstream media won't give.
2. Really pushing the mentality that you are in charge of your own safety. The no gun signs won't save your ass from a mass shooter. You, carrying your gun is the best way to protect yourself and your community from tragedy, regardless of ordinances, laws and policies that say you can't carry somewhere. We need to stick together, protect ourselves and each other, and get bad gun laws repealed, or just ignore them.

Don’t carry the hurt too long, acknowledge that you and your dad, are from different eras…and your decision to carry with GOOD intent, is the only way to be. my father is retiring after a lifetime of civil service (army-LEO-federal) and used to look at me the same way, until he heard of my foiling a robbery string as a civilian.
I’ve carried from the age of 21(I’m 44 now) after leaving the military and it IS your right to protect you, and innocents should you accept.

Hurt even worse knowing that he was doing what I was but it was okay since he was the one doing it. We are on good terms now, I just don’t talk about it and it seems to be fine
Imagine the pride his grandfather has knowing his grandson was brave conducted himself superbly and quickly subdued the assailant stopping further harm & lives lost....he will never doubt his teaching the handling of a gun and have some solitude knowing his chances of ever being a victim are greatly reduced...good job hero grandpa of a hero!

@@MrProwlr1 idk man there's a lot of examples of people getting shot once and dying, for example a woman that was only shot once in the shoulder and died at the capitol hill riot, even if the human body can technically withstand more than one bullet you really don't need eight of the ten attempted shots hitting someone described as short and scrawny to disable them, frankly maybe three shots at most should have been taken as two would likely make contact, which is more than enough to kill (though wounding is preferable) an average person.

You probably are also unaware how how many rounds from a handgun it takes to bring someone down. Some people go down with one shot of 22, others may absorb 15 rounds of 9mm and keep fighting, especially if they're on PCP or meth/other drugs.
Who cares how many times he shot? It could have been 1, could have been 20, if the outcome was the same who really cares? He unequivocally saved other people's lives. I don't agree with killing in general, but someone had to take the shooter down and better someone that was there immediately rather than waiting on law enforcement to respond and more people dying.

I am an Indiana resident and I have had my license to carry since I was 18. I however could not legally purchase a handgun until I was 21. My dad however was legally allowed to "loan" me one.
My wife and I went to the range yesterday, and we practiced something we never do, and that was hitting a target at 40yds with our carry pistols. Hers is a Walther PPS, mine a G48. Thanks to Mr. Dickens, I'm betting many people are doing the same.

Someone finally got it right. This entire story has been embellished and exaggerated since the very beginning. It was nowhere near a 40 yard shot first of all. Next he is so traumatized and shaken up with PTSD like symptoms he can't even give a coherent interview to the media. Also this young kid just started carrying...where would he have gotten these kinds of skills to outdo those of us doing this over 40 years? You just don't wake up one morning suddenly becoming Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan or Eddie Van Halen. That takes years and years of constant practice. A "hero" and has a wikipedia page, Rock Star fame and drills named after him in only 1 week. I find that very disrespectful to both myself and other Veterans.

The first firearm I ever trained on was with my dad. He took me to the range with his Glock .40 cal and taught me "The 4". We worked on marksmanship, safety, proper handling, room clearing, etc. Soon after, I signed up for the rifle shooting team at high school for JROTC, then basic training, and now self-training as often as possible. It is a necessary skill, whether you think so or not. I have drawn my firearm on another person and I pray I never have to, but if that time ever comes, I will know that I can do what I must to save myself or others.
I want to buy my M1 Carbine someday, That's the first gun I became intrested in as a child since it was used during first in World War II then the Korean and Vietnam Wars
