This song is bitter sweet for me, back in my mid teens I'd listen to this and other great songs on an old AMFM transister radio in my room at night, trying to block out the shouting and bullshit going on in the house, if it wasn't for being able too immerse myself in the music.. God knows.. I'm now 53yrs old, and this music still makes me cry, my life is so much better now, and it just reminds me of how far I've come, my lovely wife, we met late in life, no kids of our own, but her grandchildren are wonderful, and I'd never let them experience what I went through, The 1980s music is the greatest for me, but times change, and music moves on, I hope the music of today, has that kind of impact on today's youth. Love life, It's shorter than you think.
im very glad youre in a better life now ! we all must go thru the bitterness of life but we always come out of it if we play our cards right ! congrads !
My wife grew up in a similar environment . Dad came home from the pub charged up and they scrambled to their bedrooms as all hell broke loose . It was a fairly common scene in Oz late 70s into the 80s
I wonder if a band, when making a song such as this, knows that it will transcend throughout the decades of time and be important generation after generation? I suppose not, but I'm sure happy songs like this exist.
My friends were on a camping trip and we had an 80s/90’s playlist on a Bluetooth speaker, just enjoying the vibe. Right before everyone went to bed we looked up from the fire and all the stars were out, and sure enough, above us we could clearly see the Milky Way. The sparks from the fire were dancing through the air like fireflies. And right then, this song came on. The moment and the song matched up perfectly. Life just feels like a movie sometimes. So grateful for these moments that remind us life isn’t all bad.
Awesome synchronicity. I believe you, b/c its happens to me from time to time...insomuch that i think its beyond mere coincidence, but rather some higher being watching those with a good heart, and letting them know he is around, and that you are loved and cherished.
This song has such a haunting feel to it that goes right to my soul every time I hear it. It is hard to put words to it, it is so beautiful, lonely, and haunting all wrapped up in a timeless classic. Simply put it is a masterpiece.
That is exactly how I feel when I listen to this song. It is hauntingly beautiful and like you, this song goes right through my soul. I can't put words to how much it effects me every time I listen to it and yet I haven't yet been able to work out why.

April 7, 2020 : There are some things money just can't buy....I was feeling very sad today because it is my son's birthday and I couldn't spend it with him, or afford to buy him a gift because of being unemployed due to the coronavirus pandemic....I gazed out my window this evening and what a beautiful full moon! This song always reminds me of Australian summer nights in the middle of nowhere. That certain magical feel of the air and the sound of the insects and a slight breeze, a possum or two gazing with big eyes, the silhouettes of the gum trees, and being hours away from anyone else.
Perfect comment, this is how I feel about this masterpiece as well. A great track to listen to while camping, sitting around a campfire and gazing up at the stars hearing the sounds of the Australian bush.

There's a running joke that everyone who lost his virginity circa 1990 was listening to this song at the time. As a new non-virgin in 1992 -- March 28 to be exact -- I can confirm that it's totally true!!

Oh yeah I used to study for my university tests back then and usually turn on the radio and was playing a powerful song like this or maybe teard for fears, foreigner etc
Brings the '80s back when I was safe and sound in my bed, and mom and dad were alive to always be there for me. Now, it just seems it's me and everyone else is gone, and I'm all alone.
I love this song. It's sad for the Church that this song is bigger than the band could ever become. but what an incredible song that will never grow old
Nothing sad about it! Those of us who were fans of The Church in the '80s and went to any length to see them live always knew they would go onto greatness. Steve Kilby is a legend in Australian music as a performer and producer.
Saw Steve Kilbey last night singing this accoustically. Not only is he still an excellent singer, he is a bloody funny guy who is very humble. Very charismatic and if you ever get the opportunity to see him, I highly recommend it ❤️👌
Ok had just moved to Wisconsin in the winter of 1988 -from the south, and this song become a frequently played song on the radio - it hit me so close and became one of my favorite songs !
Though I’m about 8,955 mi. (as the crow flies) from Sydney, I too am under the Milky Way tonight. Such a beautiful song! 🇺🇸(Columbia, Missouri). Might be moving to Ozland soon. gotta get out of this insane asylum called the U.S. after 68 years I’ve had my fill !!!
There’s a rumour in my messages today Palais theatre tickets are on sale ❤ Aussie here too, we are blessed to see the Milky Way, it’s too light saturated in America
I live where you can go about 3 miles out of the town & the skyline & Milky Way looks exactly like this. I love it. I could never live anywhere where the lights of the city obscure the night sky. 💗💓
One of the joys of getting old, and there aren't many, is seeing and hearing your record collection being discovered and enjoyed by new generations - whether used in adverts or by filmmakers. Nostalgia at its best... so many memories both old and new.
don't agree at all that there aren't many joys to getting old. put exercise and nutrition first and you'll thrive. all that life experience should have you feeling more at peace with yourself, and your perception of the world, than you ever have been in the past.
Maxumised... thanks! Born in '69 but I'll take the compliment even though it wasn't intended as one. As a kid, I made a promise to myself that I would never change - remain a kid... mission accomplished!
This song takes me back to the days of yesteryear....the 80's a glorious decade in which I was a teenager. A decade I miss terribly in this year of 2023.
I could have sworn this song had been released MUCH MORE RECENTLY than 1988... it must be so timeless and it must have entered the pop/rock stream of consciousness so quickly and become embedded so deeply that it sounds "contemporary" even decades later.
I am 60 years old- shocks my personal habits thinking how I fool myself that I am old enough to hear this as if it were yesterday when I was the one who tucked this away somewhere- as the song reveals.
If there was a list for the top 10 Australian songs ever, this would be No. 1 !....always reminds me of my father who separated from my mum and my little brother, when I was 4 and then no contact at all for 20 years, until I finally met him again in Sydney in May 1986 (the same month my mother passed away from stomach cancer at 49) All that time, from when he left us, he lived the rest of life in Australia - never married again and no more kids, basically wandering around the country, with various jobs and businesses, even prospecting in the outback on his own. I got to know him a little better in the last 20 years when he retired to Whyalla, South Australia, until he passed away at 86 in early 2019. I did a few visits there and this song would always be playing, driving between Whyalla and Adelaide to catch an early plane, while I would gaze out up into the sky at the reddish, gold sunrise, over that expansive land that seemed to go on forever, wondering how it might have or have not of been ?
Did that early Whyalla to Adelaide run many times, in an Avis. Probably followed you.Always a red Corolla Hatchback. Flight back to Sydney. And yes, like you I marveled at that red gold sunrise as I drove. Would have been in the years 87 to 93. Iron Triange memories. Red dust days. Wish I could go back again. I rolled the dice so many times back then and always won. We all wonder what might have been. Life is a rolling dice of decisions. Take care mate.
57 years young, and I still love this song, too! I first heard this song back about 1988, and I've listened to it quite a few times since. The video/song package put together here works perfectly! It's kind of a peaceful song to listen to.
I've listened to this 100x, but tonight was the first time I stopped to appreciate the video which is breathtaking. Loved especially the footage with the wild sunflowers which is what the road and skyline looks like in the bush where we live. So real I can not only see it, but breathe the smell of the dust from the road.
Del Shoemaker it makes sense to some of us.. I was 11 when this came out.. when I was into skateboards, and finding fascinating non-Top 40 music was rarer in my neck of the woods..
This song...Makes me sad and nostalgic for the old me. Old me being a teenager in the 80s, of living in an era that is as ancient today as the 30s was in the 80s.
No how you feel time flys and there’s never enough I hope I see retirement in a few years but who knows what’s going to happen from day tc day in this crazy world and let me say the past 25 has been a ride
It's hard to believe that the '80's, were 40 years ago, going back through 1980! It makes me feel old, every time that I think about it! I was in the 3rd Grade, just when this song was on the charts! Regardless, I still love the '80's! It's hard to believe that I just turned 42, on January 31st! Thankfully, I don't have too much gray hair!
I'm an American lad who had the privilege of experiencing my teen years in the late 70s into the 80s and I salute this song from the " land down under"!!
I recall hearing this song shortly after my then-girlfriend and I made love for the first time, and it seemed so perfect, even prophetic after what had just happened between us. At any rate, we've been happily married for 30 years this past August, so it must've augured well for us! ROCK ON, fellow "Boomers!"
Who remembers listening to this as a kid in the 80's because our parents would play it and thinking why are we listening to this over and over...but now it all makes sense because I wanna go back to those days when everything made sense and life wasn't so hard Now 44 years old and I find myself listening to all the old music I remember as a child
Donnie Darko...Such an incredible ending. It's one of these movies that get you someplace you'd never have expected - like "From Dusk till Dawn" or "Runaway train".
Summer of ‘88. Me and her, sitting outside on those hot Oklahoma nights listening to music and thinking about the future. I never guessed there’d be a future where we weren’t together. I hope she found what she was looking for.
How the hell can I remember lyrics from 30+ years ago, but cannot remember what happened last week? Underrated, underplayed, but one of the most exquisite sounds I've heard in my era. Cosmic traveler, may you find your spirit soul...
My no.1 tune of all time. Always takes me back when i was 6, laying down across the backseat of my parents Ford fairlane LTD driving back home in north queensland and looking up through the side windows staring at the milky way while this played on the radio. some time in the mid 80s
And it also brings the reality of how what was so long ago wasn’t really that long ago at all...And it becomes sadder because you realize that you’re not getting out of here alive
When the bagpipe kind of reverses in to the song, that’s when I get the chills. The only example of bagpipes being effectively used in contemporary music. Love this song.
@@elliotoliver8679 they did. Both the church and AC/DC WERE Australian bands. I know. The church’s use of the bagpipes in under the Milky Way is the only song I know of where the bagpipes are used in a way I personally enjoy hearing.
@@elhorrendo7026 what you said was "use of the bagpipes".... don't say "use of bagpipes" when there were no bagpipes used ok? An ebow was used on a guitar and recorded through a synclavier synthesizer, one can only guess why they chose this BAGPIPE SOUND, perhaps inspired by Scottish band Big Country had achieved a similar sound on their single “In a Big Country” a few years before. so El Horrendo, if you ever discuss this again make sure you say "use of The Church's "bagpipe affect" ..."....then everyone will know you are not confused or misinformed. All the best.
In 2001, the song was featured in the soundtrack for the movie, Donnie Darko. In 2006, it was performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Kilbey said after the performance that it was as if the song had been made for the occasion, though in his blog he was critical of the Commonwealth Games as an event. In September 2008, readers of The Weekend Australian Magazine voted it as the best Australian song of the last 20 years.
Who gives this a thumbs down? They know not what they hear 👂 I love the bagpipe-like solo...and the title/atmosphere. Missed this when I was a kid in the 80’s but was lucky to catch it on my local college radio this morning 🤟
I don't know why but every time I listen to this song I cry. It touches something unexplainable. Thankyou The Church for such a beautiful and lasting song.

Iggy Stardust yes absolutely one of my favorite films as well

Amazing film. Moves me to tears.
why is this song not on some kinda "Best song" list...? it's a freaking masterpiece
It is a privilege to live, as I do in NZ, where the Milky Way is even visible. I don't think of myself as "under" it, I know I am within it.
I'm 63 years old and from San Francisco. The song pulls me out of depression every time! Namaste Hari Krishna!
Krishna was created….by the King Yeshua !…..find him
When you lose someone you love dearly it is the hardest thing to get through. After saying my last goodbye, I got into my car and this song came on the radio. Every time I hear it, he comes to mind. Love you always Wyatt. RIP.
I don't know you but i feel the same as you... i'm in tears... wish you the best
May Wyatt rest in paradise❤️
@@dereek1618 I believe he is in paradise, I have seen him in my dreams and he is happy but I still miss him every day.
Belated thoughts of comfort sent to you. I can relate. May have you found peace in your broken heart. Time is healer.
😢
There's a running joke that everyone who lost his virginity circa 1990 was listening to this song at the time. As a new non-virgin in 1992 -- March 28 to be exact -- I can confirm that it's totally true!!
The lyrics and composition of this song is awesome. This song reaches the core of the heart. Phenomenal to say the least ❤️❤️❤️.
It's ok.

Oh yeah I used to study for my university tests back then and usually turn on the radio and was playing a powerful song like this or maybe teard for fears, foreigner etc
Yes.
Saw this comment at almost exactly 2am. Can confirm.
As I listen to this here at 2:40am...how bout that

Can recall the first time hearing this haunting song. It's been cherished for over 40 years.
Same. There are a few songs that have touched my soul like that...remembering exactly the moment you heard it.
Brings the '80s back when I was safe and sound in my bed, and mom and dad were alive to always be there for me. Now, it just seems it's me and everyone else is gone, and I'm all alone.
💪 ❤
I love this song. It's sad for the Church that this song is bigger than the band could ever become. but what an incredible song that will never grow old
But...this song helped so many people, and this song is a masterpiece
Nothing sad about it! Those of us who were fans of The Church in the '80s and went to any length to see them live always knew they would go onto greatness. Steve Kilby is a legend in Australian music as a performer and producer.
Beautiful song and the night scenery is a perfect match
I concur
Music touches feelings that words cannot, this song is the epitome of that very statement!
Saw Steve Kilbey last night singing this accoustically. Not only is he still an excellent singer, he is a bloody funny guy who is very humble. Very charismatic and if you ever get the opportunity to see him, I highly recommend it ❤️👌
Saw him last Sunday !
@@homeless_greg_games what did you think?
Ok had just moved to Wisconsin in the winter of 1988 -from the south, and this song become a frequently played song on the radio - it hit me so close and became one of my favorite songs !
I'm Australian...under the milky way. Tonight.
Me too
And in view of the Southern Cross
Though I’m about 8,955 mi. (as the crow flies) from Sydney, I too am under the Milky Way tonight. Such a beautiful song! 🇺🇸(Columbia, Missouri). Might be moving to Ozland soon. gotta get out of this insane asylum called the U.S. after 68 years I’ve had my fill !!!
There’s a rumour in my messages today Palais theatre tickets are on sale ❤
Aussie here too, we are blessed to see the Milky Way, it’s too light saturated in America

I live where you can go about 3 miles out of the town & the skyline & Milky Way looks exactly like this. I love it. I could never live anywhere where the lights of the city obscure the night sky. 💗💓
Can you tell me where to go too see a night sky like that?
My dad showed me the milkway one winter night. It was spectacular. Miss ya' dad. 🌙
OMG..I love that!
Absolutely the most atmospheric song.
Most underrated band ever in Australia just awesome back then and today just perfect 👍
Australia at its finest, incorporating bagpipes into their music, brilliant, well done the Church, 80's at it's best. 🤘👊
Funny how there’s always bagpipes!
One of the joys of getting old, and there aren't many, is seeing and hearing your record collection being discovered and enjoyed by new generations - whether used in adverts or by filmmakers. Nostalgia at its best... so many memories both old and new.
don't agree at all that there aren't many joys to getting old. put exercise and nutrition first and you'll thrive. all that life experience should have you feeling more at peace with yourself, and your perception of the world, than you ever have been in the past.
guy dulac old? Come on...you sound like a kid
They don't make'em like they used to...........listen to today's crap and comment
Maxumised... thanks! Born in '69 but I'll take the compliment even though it wasn't intended as one. As a kid, I made a promise to myself that I would never change - remain a kid... mission accomplished!
Can you believe we're old enough for this to be clasic rock
This song reminds me I have a soul. That there is something bigger than me and beautiful. I'm so blessed to be alive in this great vast of stars.
Hauntingly beautiful song that invokes memories of sun, surf, partying in the 80s,and the remorse of love lost in days past
Yeah, it’s one of THOSE songs.
Wow..how can a song make you feel so old..and still so young, all at the same time?
Best comment! Strange thing is, it made me feel that same way back when it first came out when I was young.
I'm 18 and only known the song for a few years but it has the same feeling on me. Fucking amazing song
Only just discovered this song and am nearly 40! Where was I?.Beautifully melancholy !
Lisa Evans I'm 52 and used to listen to the whole album on cassette in my walkman! The 80's were a magical time for music!
Because there is no such thing as age. We are timeless souls...
10 seconds in and ALL I can think 🤔 is: THIS Should have been their Music Video!!! Yes! I was alive and in the 8th grade when this song came out!☺️
I am 60 years old- shocks my personal habits thinking how I fool myself that I am old enough to hear this as if it were yesterday when I was the one who tucked this away somewhere- as the song reveals.
OH THIS SONG! LOVE IT BUT IT BRINGS BACK SAD MEMORIES. MY EX
Thank you for sharing what this song means to you. God Bless you.
Wow, well said. Life takes many twists and turns. I'm glad you reconnected with your dad after losing your mum.
Su vida fue poesía pura. Saludos señor.
Thats got to be the most successful bagpipe solo I've ever heard
nearly 60 and still loving it...
Respect Bro, live long & prosper
Bruce, I first heard this in 1989 and it still gets me. So amazing.
57 years young, and I still love this song, too! I first heard this song back about 1988, and I've listened to it quite a few times since. The video/song package put together here works perfectly! It's kind of a peaceful song to listen to.
51 and loving it. I was 19 when this came out I think.
So lovely to drift off into a different world while listening to this masterpiece!
@James fine thank you! How about you?
I've listened to this 100x, but tonight was the first time I stopped to appreciate the video which is breathtaking. Loved especially the footage with the wild sunflowers which is what the road and skyline looks like in the bush where we live. So real I can not only see it, but breathe the smell of the dust from the road.
Another masterpiece from the 80's
Brings back childhood memories
Childhood memories! Cracking me up!
Someone pointed this out the other day: the 60's were to the 80's, as the 80's are to today.
They were good and simple times to be sure.
No how you feel time flys and there’s never enough I hope I see retirement in a few years but who knows what’s going to happen from day tc day in this crazy world and let me say the past 25 has been a ride
My best year was 1983 some of the best music and movies came out that year
It's hard to believe that the '80's, were 40 years ago, going back through 1980!

Plenty of young people know this song well like myself. Particularly here in Australia it's one of the best known songs of the era.
R ock on Brother !!!
Who remembers listening to this as a kid in the 80's because our parents would play it and thinking why are we listening to this over and over...but now it all makes sense because I wanna go back to those days when everything made sense and life wasn't so hard
Now 44 years old and I find myself listening to all the old music I remember as a child
What a beautiful song. Could listen to it over and over. Lyrics and music are awesome.

Agreed!!!!😜
Mind = blown! The magic feeling of being at peace with the universe in that one moment of time and love. Goosebumps.
Love this music back is Dark for 2018
Amazing song
My no.1 tune of all time. Always takes me back when i was 6, laying down across the backseat of my parents Ford fairlane LTD driving back home in north queensland and looking up through the side windows staring at the milky way while this played on the radio. some time in the mid 80s
Nostalgia is the best pain there is.😔
Beruška Vozábová sometimes it weighs me down so, I can’t breathe
I'm not sure, the older i get the heavier and more painful it becomes... God how i miss my youth.
And it also brings the reality of how what was so long ago wasn’t really that long ago at all...And it becomes sadder because you realize that you’re not getting out of here alive
Beruška Vozábová3 Great comment...
Beruška Vozábová Well said
When the bagpipe kind of reverses in to the song, that’s when I get the chills. The only example of bagpipes being effectively used in contemporary music. Love this song.
AC/DC used them
@@elliotoliver8679 they did. Both the church and AC/DC WERE Australian bands. I know. The church’s use of the bagpipes in under the Milky Way is the only song I know of where the bagpipes are used in a way I personally enjoy hearing.
It is not bagpipes its a synthesiser
@@corrinthe synthesised bagpipes or bagpipes with effects placed on them. I still stand by my statement 😊
I had just turned 18 when this song was released, how I wish I could go back in time🌌🇦🇺
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

+Chairman Meow Donnie Darko ! One of the Best movie i ever seen...
