  • The British Rail Class 43 HST, also known as the InterCity 125, is a UK High Speed Train.
The class were built by BREL at Crewe works between 1975 & 1982 and to this day they remain dominant on many mainlines in the United Kingdom.
They are the fastest diesel locomotive in the world, with an absolute maximum speed of 148 mph, and regular service speed of 125 mph.
All HSTs in this video are installed with MTU 16V4000 engines, which replaced the Paxman Valenta 12RP200L.
Here is a selection of clips I have of the HSTs at speed in many different locations on the East Coast Mainline such as: Stevenage, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Grantham, Newark Northgate, Retford, Northallerton, Durham, Chester-le-Street & Alnmouth for Alnwick.
All trains in this video are running at speeds between 50mph & 125mph.

I loved these trains. I designed the engine control system for the four power cars that had the Mirrlees MB190 engines fitted. I spent many months traveling with them. The specifications I was given did not include the top speed limiter so when a power car with an MB190 fitted there was not the top speed limit. I was travelling in the trailing power car which got up to 143mph in normal service. Unfortunately for the driver there was an inspector with me. He was not happy. They were certainly quick getting out of the stations and up to speed. The drivers loved them. Thanks for sharing your video. 🙂

I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more..
