Firstly, I'm very glad to see this Podcast being back, thank you guys! Dillon Rogers as a Guest was a very interesting call and must've also been delightful for him, he's asked some very good questions and this episode is especially interesting because Mr. Rodgers is sort of stepping into the footsteps of Arkanes Dishonored. I've been anticipating a episode about immersive-sim philosophy, there's a lot of valuable information a future dev can pull out of this. Again, thank you guys for this Podcast!

Мне кажется, они пригласили всех, кого только можно, но никто или почти никто не согласился. Хотя, вот, Авеллон выглядит вполне реальным гостем учитывая то, что они с Рафаэлем работали над Prey (о чём было упомянуто в недавнем "анализе" сериала Фаллаут в блоге Криса).

@@Artmayskii если ты считаешь, что почти за 3 года существования этого подкаста, средний выпуск которого длится немногим больше часа, вышеперечисленный список людей это не "практически никто", учитывая количество имён в индустрии, ты либо мало этих самых имён знаешь и/или не понимаешь, по какой причине люди могут отказаться от участия в подкасте после 24 февраля 2022 года. Вспомни, что произошло после выпуска с Ромеро.
Труд Петра и Рафаэля я, при всём при этом, не преуменьшаю.

It's nice to get a chance to hear some of your thoughts and feelings about Arkane Austin closing, Raph. It was indeed great that the studio took life at all! And so many great games. Can't wait to play Redfall with the final patch, some time. And great to see Dillon the podcast! :D
By the way: I find it interesting how Raf and everybody always talks about how ImmSim-Likes would be so tough to sell and market.
Breaking it all down: Unless you're going hardcore stealth or something, these games are and always have been basically action games (or action RPGs). There's nothing much to be gained by focusing the marketing on the people who get the "Deeper layers" and system details. Those guys are gonna sign up anyway. Including yours truly.
A good example more recent was BG3. Rather than frontloading their pitch with system complexity, and how this was the return of the turn-based CRPG as you knew it, their marketing focused much on what players can do in their game. That sounds obvious. But this was less about specific mechanics and systems. And rather about showing off crazy stuff. Including getting humped by a, you know, bear. Like, what, I can do even THAT? Why yes, you can do even that. That's the pitch. Zelda more recent leans into that as well, including all the social media shenanigans that come off people building batshit crazy stuff and the game responding accordingly. Naturally, a well-known IP (D&D), tried and tested stock fantasy of fiction and mass market presentation helps a ton.
Still, this seems tailor-fit as a sales pitch for these kinda games just as well. After all, this kind of experience has always been about providing player agency -- on a level a bit more interesting than chosing between the shotgun or the chainsaw to get past a challenge posed. So here goes: See these two zombies over there? Well, you COULD fry their brains. Don't dare to think it's the only way past them though, we've got you covered. And who knows: If you try to talk to them first and shoot later, you might find the love of your life!
PS: After the positive experience with Fallen Aces (Early Access) and this interview, I've gotten the Gloomwood EA as well. And I wanted to wait 'til 1.0.... 🙂

Sending good vibes and support to Raf. I was a bit shocked when I heard about the closure of Arcane Austin. Microsoft is definitely up to some nonsense: first, they push the development of a trash game in a genre the team has no experience with, and then, when the game predictably fails, they shut down the studio. Brilliant.
Anyway, Raf is a legend, thanks to him for his work and creativity. Thanks to all of you.
Regarding save compatibility. If the game is not in early access, it would be nice to maintain backward compatibility of saves all the way, in my opinion.

Честно говоря, невероятную энергию чувствую от выпуска. Раф с кайфом поиграл в игру по сути своего протеже, взращенного на его иммерсив симах. Диллон светится от счастья, сам великий гуру попробовал его игру. Ну а Петр по классике творит исторические вещи и кайфует как не в себя

It's very sad to hear 'bout Arcane Austin, but I think this is a great possibility for ex-AA to reunite under their own flag or something like that. We do know 'bout thief mod and we'd like to see more of that sort of games!
Fallen Aces, Gloomwood, Shadows Of Doubt, Wolfeye have come to save the day.
I think it's tragic that Bethesda didn't get the Indiana JOnes IP earlier though. Unlike Redfall leading to staff turnover (highly specialized studio and all), Indy is tailor-fit for Arkane. Think Thief's grave robbery missions. Including its vague in-universe maps with notes, like something taken straight outta the grail diary in The Last Crusade.
Also commercially: See how Larian turned CRPGs into a major hit when paired with a popular IP, mass market presentation and a pitch that could have been Arkane's: "Whatever you think you can do in this game, you likely can -- including getting humped by a bear."
But too late now.
I still can't quite believe this is a thing. Game developers talking about game development? It's sad that such a thing feels surreal. No marketing fluff, just talking about decisions, opinions, mistakes, problems, hopes. So thank you for another episode.
Had the pleasure of talking to Dillon before on the New Blood Discord, shortly after the demo came out. Where I asked him about his previous mapping adventures (I think for Team Fortress 2) and he shared the skybox trick he used for the demo level. Good to see him here in good health.

A shame but time goes on, Shame we never got a follow up on arx fatalis and dark messiah, Dishonored 1 and 2 I have my issues with them, but cant deny they are great games, Prey is probably their best game overall. As soon as deathloop and later redfall thing happened I knew they were done.
About the closure of Arkane Austin...is it true that not a single Arkane game (under Bethesda's wing) was a commercial success? Don't get me wrong here - I'm in love with Arkane projects, finished their every game at least twice.
I'm not sure about the first Dishonored, but from what I've heard: Dishonored 2, Prey, Deathloop and Redfall (of course) did not make enough profit to satisfy the publisher. There is also Wolfenstein: Youngblood that failed miserably, but it happened for other reasons. Correct me if I'm wrong.
So, to be fair, Bethesda gave more than one "second chance" to let Arkane shine. Redfall was an agony, the last-ditch effort to make profit out of Arkane team, which made things even worse because higher-ups don't understand anything about games.
From what I see now, Arkane Lyon has the last chance to stay afloat with the Blade game. Bethesda gave them a popular Marvel setting and they hope that it will bring more players to the game. If this project doesn't make enough profit, I'm afraid Arkane Lyon will be closed as well. I hope that I'm wrong.

This comment is written in a very confusing way but if you are trying to say Arkane Lyon is not a great studio making great games then that's just bs. "DEATHLOOP" kicked ass, sure it had things it could improve on but it wasn't built on the typical tried and tested imsim formula and introduced something new to the space. I know BLADE will kick ass too!
