Out of all my instruments, for me the shruti box is the hardest to play and stay awake at the same time. Its' tonal quality is that hypnotic. I love the possibilities you show here, it's giving me some "aha" moments. Thank you!
I'm Celtic and love the drone sound of the bagpipes. Like adding a drone to a flute. Playing the Shruti Box like shown is like adding a drone sound to a hand drum. A unique way of doing things.
I came here in search of some rhythmic shrutiness for my Celtic ukulele noodling needs. A friend has a shruti and I wondered about borrowing it to record some drone samples. This has convinced me I may be on to something. As you say it does have that pipes feel about it that should work really well. I'll have to invite her round to sit and rhythmically drone away in D for me. 🙂
Dang, never heard of these, would be fun to use both hands to pump the bellows rhythmically as well as flipping the switches. I could see getting to the point of doing a whole chord sequence, flipping two, three, even four of the switches simultaneously using both hands. Kinda want one now!
@ Lee Holland I really like it. I am new in this area, can those rhythms played on any shruti box or it needs to be made specially as yours. What is the difference between yours and others what is common and available? I'd like to know before I buy one.

More like oboe than flute imo, given bagpipes have reeds

Hitting this beautiful and delicate instrument its not recommendable. Regards
That's boring as hell
It may not be much as a solo instrument, but imagine it alongside a drum and a fiddle and some vocals - things will get very atmospheric very quickly!
