I was told this as well to stick to one genre of photography. I do weddings, senior, fashion, product, and I'm also a graphic designer so I do photo composites as well. I also do videography. The problem is I get bored fast doing the same thingsover and over and I need to be challenged with various things. So I chose to do different things photography and video wise and I love it..
This is fact, started corporate photography and concert photography and the joy of doing my job is overwhelming and then being able to work on different types of projects
I think you should be known for being very good at one genre, then very proficient at other genres. Then people should learn to have separate portfolios for the different genres.
Imo, labelling that advice as “BS” is a bit absolute. It means it has no favourable reward. I think why people are often advised to narrow down to a particular niche is to encourage mastery in that category of your craft. You can encourage versatility but not trivialise that advice.
I understand your opinion but in mine, I do not think that advice should be taken seriously anymore. Yes, it's worked for some people but just a handful if you actually look at it. As a photographer, I think you should be extremely versatile in this day and age and if you then decide to niche down for whatever reason, you can but your portfolio should show several things you can do.
