Two of those tools I regret not buying earlier (as I thought they were a bit of a luxury) are the impact driver, and the cordless nail gun. They both make work quicker and easier. No more swapping out drill bits and screwdriver bits, and if you are driving in big screws such as bugles, much less strain on the wrist. I've gone one step further, two drills: one for the pilot hole, and one for the clearance hole. The nail gun is great for holding small pieces in place while the glue dries, saving the clamps for the bigger jobs. My number 6 would be a jig saw.
During Covid lockdown , here in the UK , we got paid to stay home . So not being able to spend money at pubs and restaurants i started buying power tools to while away the days isolating . First a Driill , Driver , Jigsaw , Sander , Router , Nail Gun , Mitre Saw , Table saw . As i got better , so the tool purchase price increased . I now hang doors for friends , build boxes as gifts and the car stays outside as my garage is full of projects . 😊
@@diyforknuckleheads I've got all those tools but the router (that's next), but I always watch your videos for more tips on using them well. Oh, and the dad jokes, can never have too much material :D
Shane, I thought I'd say thank you. I bought a basic Makita circular saw a few years ago and initially I found the learning curve a bit steep. I wasn't really getting good results. I think it was in 2022 you made the video for the straight cut jig. I made one at the time. I bought a 900mm aluminium ruler to incorporate into it, that serves as the spine of my jig. I did some reasonable projects with the saw+jig combination. I've pretty much moved on from the jig at this point but it was an invaluable step along the way.
👍👍...Thanks Mate! Really appreciate the feedback and the Donation....Very generous!! Glad you found video for the Saw Guide useful too.....l use mine all the time 👍😁🇦🇺

Good recommendations. I have to admit I’m less and less using my drill, instead taking an impact driver for almost everything. An SDS drill is great if you have a lot of concrete work, and a grinder is a must in many situations.
Yeah sorry about the lack of joke Philip.....l was running a little experiment to see if people missed it 😂.Looks like it's coming back! Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
I agree with you on the flathead driver.....I use my tools for my work. I use an impact for drilling too. Here in America most power tool manufacturers (Milwaukee, Ryobi, DeWalt) have quarter drive hex drill bit sets....Milwaukee works great.
awesome, have all 5 tools that I bought in the begging. In addition I have jigsaw, but trying to keep minimum tools as much as possible. I thought I have too much but seems that's a minimum, great video, thanks.
I'd suggest both an impact driver and drill for the most part. A lot of the time you can buy them as a combo with batteries and a charger for less than buying them separately. And as you're using them the most, buy a decent set. I couldn't do without my Bosch blue 10.8V set but also have a cheaper 18V red Ozito set also so I don't have to change bits out LOL. Actually, I "misplaced the bosch driver and needed something now. Then found it 6 months later 😂🤣 All pretty essential IMO Shane. The 184mm saw is a good size for most general things. Although more expensive, I probably use my table saw more than a circular saw or drop saw. They're all still handy. But like everything, you'll probably end up with multiples of common tools.
Another great video, might I just add that the the most useful power tools depends upon the type of work that will be done. In my opinion and in not particular order my five most used tools are: cabinet saw, drill press, band saw, disk/belt sander, table router and lathe. Yeah and I know that's six, having said that I own all of the tools that you have mentioned and they get used but not as frequent as the ones that I have mentioned.
Just by way of explanation I used off-cuts and scrap to make simple wooden toys for charity. My current project is making 34 train sets so that I need a means of making repeated uniform cuts hence the cabinet saw and making wheels gives the drill press a good work out. As an initial set-up your suggested five tools would be an excellent starting point of most DIY work.
Your tips are good as gold, like always. 👍 A small tip for those on a tight budget: a power sander is nice, but if you can't afford one at the time, stick your sand paper to a handy piece of wood with some double sided tape. It's not the same as a sander, but it's much better than the sand paper alone. And where is my dad joke? I hope you don't stop them? ❤
Cheers Andrea and thanks for the handy tip mate 👍 In regard to the lack of joke, l did that on purpose to see if people noticed and judging b all the comments the have 😂 The next vid will have one for sure! 😁🇦🇺👍
Nice helpful ideas. 2 Nub questions: A) What is the rubber pad you used on your bench to keep the workpiece from sliding? 2) what is the type of plywood with the black top and where can I find it? My Big box nor local plywood shops didn’t stock it. Plywood shop was for commercial cabinet builders and said to put linoleum on top as they sniggered at me.
Thanks mate. The rubber pad is just the non slip stuff that you sometimes put inside a kitchen drawer to stop the utensil container from sliding around. All hardware stores sell the product. The black ply is called Formply. Concretors use it for formwork to stop the concrete from sticking. Over here in Australia it can be found all over the place.....not sure about other parts of the world. Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺

Repaired an 1890's farmhouse and now we have "it all" including a drill press to make repeatable adjustable cabinet shelves. Thanks for the vid! I agree with 99% of your advice, but an impact driver can drill holes, too. Not as well as a drill/driver, maybe, but the drill version drills better, and the impact version drives better.
I own a drill and an electric screwdriver. Drill driver is a must. Not sure i trust myself with a circular saw but if i had a project that would probably be the smart choice
What!!!!......No Dad joke? As for flat head screws...I think Drew at FishersShop is keeping the manufacturers in business (at least 1 in every project lol).

To lessen the cost stick to 1 battery system, look into tools you will get in the future you can buy bare tools at a far lower cost, I started with a drill, circular saw, sander, jigsaw, grinder then added to that through the years.
I've had a circular saw for years (inherited). Not used yet... it scares the bejezus out of me... Both risk of injury and fear of messing up the cut. I know i need to just try it out!
Great video, my friend. However, i have 1 complaint..... there wasn't a usual "Dad joke" that I've come to love 🤷♂️! Maybe next time!? Keep up the great work, info & content!

Top content bud. I noticed a few fishing rods in the background there, have you got any DIY projects related fishing? Stools, boxes, stool/boxes with cup holders, folding bait cutting tables, rod holders or that sort of thing? 🤔👍
This old, old carpenter/woodworker watched the video, Shane, to see what you would recommend to the beginner. Agreed on all points, including the tossup between the trim router and cordless nail gun. At one point, I thought you were about to bring on the dad joke. A little experiment, eh? 🤨
I would suggest a cordless drill and impact driver purchased as a kit. I got the Ozito real budget brand one and it came with a bag (more handy than I could have imagined), two batteries, 4Ah & 1.5Ah plus a fast charger. Don't know what the current prices are but it was way cheaper than buying the two skins and then batteries. It can be far king annoying when you drill a pilot hole and then have to swap out the drill for a driver bit hence get the set and save the time swapping. It got annoyingly tedious when I had a single 14.4v drill. A few months later Ozito/Bunnings had a special on batteries and I picked up 2 x 4Ah batteries and a dual fast charger for AUD$99. A 4Ah battery is normally AUD$69 and the dual charger AUD$53.xx from memory so a good saving there IMO. As old man Knackered said, choose you battery brand and then stick to it as you are really locked into it unless you have a 3D printer and can make battery adapters for your tool. I made the mistake of getting the Ozito sliding compound mitre saw. It doesn't have the preset detents for the most common angles and it's a real pain to get it back to a square cut if you change it to cut a mitre. Get one that has the detents and you'll stay a lot more sane and unlike me you'll have hair into old age. 👍
Great to see a video from you Shane. You forgot to mention the 14” beam saw. Those things are as awesome as they are scary 😂. Hope you’re well mate and all is good.
😂.....G'day Vic....long time no hear mate. Bloody hell, l forgot all about the 14" Beam Saw 😂 All good up here thanks mate. Hope you and the fam are well 👍😁🇦🇺
On the power drill options, the other issue with a 240V vs a Battery is that the 240v one has inertia run-on whereas the battery drill stops pretty much instantly when you release the trigger. Trying to drive in screws with a 240V drill is not going to end well.
Great video. I was expecting a jig saw to be listed, as most of the tools mentioned only cut straight lines. As for the router, I find is ideal as a finishing tool. Anyhow, every person is different. A Multi tool too as welll?
100% uncle Knackers they should outlaw those stupid flathead or stand heads. They don’t stay on the screw and are the cause of a lot of not so friendly words coming from the too user. Another stellar video. Your face at the beginning with all those choice was how I felt. I love makita but my budget doesn’t. lol The antidote to those words is a Dad joke, which by the way was woefully missing in this video. But the comment regarding inches certainly could apply lol
😂.....we should all sign a petition to outlaw the Flathead screw mate 😂 Sorry about the lack of Dad joke but it was done on purpose to see if people actually noticed....judging by all the previous comments it's coming back! 😂 Now the inches thing could start a war 😂 Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺

Hi Uncle Knackers, why did you opt for the trim router and not a more standard router that you hold with two hands? And what exactly are the differences? Love your videos and greetings from the Netherlands :).
G'day mate.....l really don't need a big router for the stuff that l do. The trim router is easy to handle and does the job that l need a router to do. Having said that, l also have a larger router that l use whenever l have a heavy duty job on the go. Cheers 👍👍
Great video and fantastic advice! Totally agree with you about flat head screws, just awful 🤢🤮! I vote for bringing back the dad jokes. Thanks for making the videos, keep up the great work!
I don't like vinyl siding, but I was helping a man put it on a house. He had a homeade jig for cutting the pieces to length. The blade was installed backwards on the saw, and you slid it across the jig to make a nice smooth cut. While I was around the other side of the house, he needed to cut a piece of wood, so he reversed the blade back to the normal orientation. He also forgot to change it back to the backwards position. When I tried to cut the next piece of siding, did I ever have a surprise! That blade split that vinyl all to pieces! I asked him what was going wrong, and he sheepishly admitted what he had done.

😂.....I promise there will be one in the next video mate 👍 Yeah the compound isn't a feature that most people would use on a regular basis. Thanks for watching 😁🇦🇺👍
Myth you can’t use a impact driver to drill holes. I use my Makita LXT to drill 12mm holes in walls , metal and hard wood. If the bits you are using are impact rated you can. I love all my cordless Makita tools. No more worrying about a power source to plug it into.

I kept waiting for the "dad" joke and never got it, but you Still made me laugh, especially when you flexed that hand saw in the beginning. Over here where I live, there are people who play the saws (in musical bands). Maybe they do that in Australia too? I'm happy to report that I have at least one of each tool you featured! I Love them all but probably use my power driver the most. Here on the farm we're always needing to 'fix' something.

G'day uncle knackers! On drills: corded drills have brushes in the electrics, cordless drills are brushless. The difference? When overloaded, cordless drills cut out, where corded drills let the smoke out. Ask me how I know! My wife calls me "Kill Drill"
Here's one for anyone who needs a fix: Two muffins are sitting in an oven. The first muffin says, "Boy it sure is hot in here!" And the second muffin goes, "Holy sh** a talking muffin!" **eyebrow flash**

Yep you're right mate....they 'can'......very roughly drill holes but that's not what they are designed for as you mentioned. Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Well done knackers another enjoyable post
👍😁....Thanks Jim 👍😁🇦🇺
I own a drill and an electric screwdriver. Drill driver is a must. Not sure i trust myself with a circular saw but if i had a project that would probably be the smart choice
Yeah mate, the circular saw can be a little tricky but is essential in the workshop for many projects. Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
What!!!!......No Dad joke? As for flat head screws...I think Drew at FishersShop is keeping the manufacturers in business (at least 1 in every project lol).
😂😂....l've gotta have a chat to Drew over at Fishers Shop and give him good talking to....flathead screws....seriously 😂 Sorry about the lack of Dad Joke, l did that on purpose to see if people noticed and judging by a number of previous comments it's coming back! Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Isn't Drew just using up the ones he inherited?
Great video, keep up the good work!
👍😁....Thanks mate 👍😁🇦🇺
To lessen the cost stick to 1 battery system, look into tools you will get in the future you can buy bare tools at a far lower cost, I started with a drill, circular saw, sander, jigsaw, grinder then added to that through the years.
Yep.....good advise mate 👍
I've had a circular saw for years (inherited). Not used yet... it scares the bejezus out of me... Both risk of injury and fear of messing up the cut. I know i need to just try it out!
Yeah Neil....rip off the bandaid mate and have a crack. Just take it easy and you should be OK....Good luck with it 👍😁🇦🇺
Hey shane good to see you again for new tips and professional projects. Cheers mate🍺🍻👍.🇨🇦
Thanks Dan! Hope you're well mate 👍😁🇦🇺
@@diyforknuckleheads same to you.👍🍻🍺🇨🇦

Good choice mate.👍
Great advice for those begins.
Thanks Dawayne 👍
Always a great bit of tips. Ty
No worries mate! Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Great video…oscillating multi-tool is a must for me…but your top 5 is on point…would be interested in a top 10
👍😁...Thanks mate 👍
Great video, my friend. However, i have 1 complaint..... there wasn't a usual "Dad joke" that I've come to love 🤷♂️!
Maybe next time!?
Keep up the great work, info & content!
😂.....Glad you noticed that mate. I did that on purpose to see if people noticed. Just a little experiment to see if people were actually engaging with them 🤔 Thanks for watching 😁🇦🇺👍
I look forward to them when I see your videos come up 👍. Thanks for including them as they add a little something to the content, imo anyway. Thank you. Enjoy your weekend!
Tony 🇺🇸
Great episode mate! I've been using your tips and tricks for your coming from Hawai'i \m/
Thanks mate! 👍😁🇦🇺
Thanks for the good info.
No worries mate! Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Will have to check that router table out Knackers, looks handy!
😁👍....You'll love it Jamie! One of the best things l've ever made 👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Brilliant round up 👍🏻🇨🇮🇬🇧
👍😁....Thanks John.....appreciate the feedback mate 😁🇦🇺
Top content bud. I noticed a few fishing rods in the background there, have you got any DIY projects related fishing? Stools, boxes, stool/boxes with cup holders, folding bait cutting tables, rod holders or that sort of thing? 🤔👍
👍😁......Thanks Gordie! I did make a fishing rod holder.....check it out if you're interested, here's the link ruclips.net/video/hUomY9S9d6w/видео.html
Thank's Knackers, always a useful vid, Cheers Bloke.
Thanks mate! 👍😁🇦🇺
Great video Shane lots of useful info mate
Glad you found it useful mate 👍😁🇦🇺
This old, old carpenter/woodworker watched the video, Shane, to see what you would recommend to the beginner. Agreed on all points, including the tossup between the trim router and cordless nail gun. At one point, I thought you were about to bring on the dad joke. A little experiment, eh? 🤨
😂......Gotta keep you guys on the ball Ricky! Thanks fir watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Great advice Joseph.....thanks for Taking the time to leave such a detailed reply mate. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺
Keep up the good work wish you done more videos
👍👍...Cheers mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Bloody legend!! Thank you 🙏
No worries Rebecca.....glad you found the vid useful and thanks for taking the time to watch 😁🇦🇺👍
Thanks for watching mate and yep you're right re the 240v 👍😁🇦🇺
Bunnings, My happy place
Well spotted mate.....l'll be having a sausage out the front in about half an hour! 👍😁🇦🇺
Great tips thanks
No worries at all Bradley....thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
I couldn't live without my sawsall and oscillating saw use daily
Yep.....good choices mate 👍
Great video. I was expecting a jig saw to be listed, as most of the tools mentioned only cut straight lines. As for the router, I find is ideal as a finishing tool. Anyhow, every person is different. A Multi tool too as welll?
Thanks Devon. If l was to a Top 6 or 7 the jigsaw would have been in the mix for sure. Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
I was waiting for the joke and the cup of tea at the end😊
👍😁.....Next time YKK 👍😁
I love this
👍😁....Cheers mate....thanks for watching 👍🇦🇺
Reciprocating saw, impact driver, palm nailer, japanese hand saw.
All good choices 👍
Nice one Uncle, haven't seen you in a while, hope all is good in your world. Thanks for another great video
Thanks Paul....all good over here mate. Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
👍👍👍.Thanks Shane
👍😁....No worries mate 👍😁🇦🇺
You can drill holes with an impact
Hi uncle knackers are used to be called knackers when I was younger all my brother I love your videos I built the bench the other day fantastic bench I bought a router I bought a jigsaw and I bought a very very dangerous bench table saw which I’m a bit scared off at the moment only just started watching your videos about two weeks ago and I can’t get enough of them keep it up I’m looking forward to your next video I bought a couple of pipe clamps I thought you did a video but I can’t find how to use it anyway I’m Dave catch you later
👍😁.....Good stuff Dave and welcome aboard mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Hi Uncle Knackers, why did you opt for the trim router and not a more standard router that you hold with two hands? And what exactly are the differences? Love your videos and greetings from the Netherlands :).
G'day mate.....l really don't need a big router for the stuff that l do. The trim router is easy to handle and does the job that l need a router to do. Having said that, l also have a larger router that l use whenever l have a heavy duty job on the go. Cheers 👍👍
You need all of them 😂Another helpful vid Shane!
😁👍.....Cheers Michael 👍😁🇦🇺
Hehe and also id recommend a jigsaw ....i love to use that particular type of saw 😁 actually its my fav
👍👍
Great video and fantastic advice! Totally agree with you about flat head screws, just awful 🤢🤮! I vote for bringing back the dad jokes. Thanks for making the videos, keep up the great work!
😁😁....Cheers mate.....the joke is making a return! Thanks for watching 👍🇦🇺
😂......probably not the only person to ever have done that one mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Wondering where you got your countersink bit from. I am in canada and can't find one like yours.
Mike, here's the link to the one that l use. Cheers 👍www.bunnings.com.au/macsim-10g-clever-tool-standard-head-blister-pack_p2360698
Hawd on a feel cheated one the video can't be finished we didnt get the great tip knackers and there was so many dad joke opportunities in that 🤯🤯🤯😲 mind blown. Glad to see you back though m8 weve missed u. I agree with everything apart from the router would switched that out for jigsaw. U are aware u can buy dril bits that are impact ready?? 🏴👍
😂......Sorry about the lack of joke Michael. I actually did that on purpose to see if people noticed.....a little social experiment if you will.....from a lot of previous comments its coming back 😁 Yeah mate l'm aware of the masonry type bits and if l was to to a Top 6 the jigsaw would have made the list 👍 Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
@@diyforknuckleheads to easy m8
No dad joke? Another great video with good recommendations. I have the fancy miter saw like yours but I could do without the compound tilting feature as I almost never use it.
I agree Pat that you can drill holes with one but that's not what they are primarily designed for. Thanks for watching 👍
Nice Bunnings background… see if you can get Sydney Tools next time ;)
Cheers mate 👍😁 🇦🇺🇦🇺
As always another corker from shane i hooe you can do more naking vids as i really love the way you show how to make good stuff..
Pls excuse my spelling it's early in the morning 😮
👍😁.....Thanks Stephen 👍 Thanks for sticking around mate 👍😁🇦🇺
😂😂....excused 😂
I’d have the drill at number 1 as there are so many accessories and uses other than making holes it can be used for.
Yeah l'll give you that one mate 👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
It's been awhile shane.. worried about you mate.. cheers 🇺🇸
G'day Frank....yeah it's been 6 weeks of school holidays over here mate so l take a bit of time off.....thanks for noticing and for watching mate 👍 Hope you're well 👍😁🇦🇺

Hi Shane ,thanks for another great video, always look forward to them. Shame about your teams result tonight though mate.Cheers 🇬🇧
Phil....very disappointing mate.....up to half time things were OK 😢 Thanks for watching the vid mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Yeah l was keeping you on your toes Krickette 🤔.....Just checkin' to see if you'd notice 👍 It'll be back in the next vid for sure 👍😁. I love playing the saw 😂 Occasionally you can get some really notes if you have a good saw 👍😁
I agree, some of the stuff they play sounds real good. Maybe you could play the saw for your subscribers sometime!@@diyforknuckleheads
G'day uncle knackers!
On drills: corded drills have brushes in the electrics, cordless drills are brushless. The difference? When overloaded, cordless drills cut out, where corded drills let the smoke out. Ask me how I know! My wife calls me "Kill Drill"
😂😂.....good advice there Ross 👍😁🇦🇺
I was just wondering when you were gonna upload a video the other day and yes I noticed there was no dad joke.
😂.....sorry about that Sue. Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Dear Uncle, I don't wanna be sounding annoying but please, don't forget the dad jokes. It's important for people like me who need cheering up. Cheers!
😂.....Don't worry Donnie, this was just a one off 👍😁
👍
👍😁....Thanks Daniyar. Appreciate you watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Get the Dad joke back! Also, curious how far down your list you would place a multi tool.
Don't worry mate...it's back 😂 The Multi Tool is an awesome tool which l would have in my top 10 👍
Here's one for anyone who needs a fix: Two muffins are sitting in an oven. The first muffin says, "Boy it sure is hot in here!" And the second muffin goes, "Holy sh** a talking muffin!"
**eyebrow flash**
😂😂.....Boom Tish 👍😁🇦🇺
Thanks for the tips, I missed your dad joke though
No worries Mark 👍Stay tuned for the next vid mate, there'll be a joke in that one.....guaranteed 😂
So I watched the whole dang video and NO DAD JOKE… WHAT THE SAM HILL IS GOING ON!
FYI next should be convenience power tools.
😂.....sorry about that D.H. I'm running a little experiment to see if people would miss it or not...judging by all the previous comments it's coming back! 😂 Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
