AHW 20th Anniversary

Blue Cross & Blue Shield United of Wisconsin’s conversion to a for-profit corporation in 1999 resulted in a $618 million gift to the people of Wisconsin, split evenly between the state’s two medical schools-the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). MCW leaders past and present reflect on the formation of the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment (AHW) to steward the private medical school’s share of this generous gift to improve the health of people and communities throughout Wisconsin, with state officials and community partners offering their thoughts on AHW’s history and impact on health in Wisconsin since the endowment issued its first grants in 2004.
