Finished it yesterday and the more I read of it the more I loved it. I thought the characterisation within the narrative was superb and I found it more and more moving the further I got into it. What also struck me was the way that Hollinghurst was able to conjure up the feel of each time period, even to the extent that the discussion about the Brexit vote era made me realise how we have moved on even now from that period. I too , by the end wanted more, I wanted to know more about his Mum and her partner, wanted to know more about Hector and even perhaps more about Giles (boooo hiss).
After I finished it yesterday I then read Alan Bennett’s Killing Time,a brilliant antidote to Hollingsworth and added to the realisation of how lucky we are to have these two brilliant authors giving us such jewels to read.

Great, I’m so glad you found it moving as well. And you’re right, he gets that period detail from each decade so well.

It sounds like a perfect book for my present mood. When you started drawing us into what it is about it Reminded me of the series A Dance to the Music of Time. Thanks Eric. 🤗

Please can you recommend some spy or crime fiction for Xmas gifts. You recommended one last year (set in Berlin) which I bought and it was very well received by my friend. Thanks. 😁
