Septa SL5 RFW Philadelphia to Doylestown on a sunny 5/8/24

- This was an impromptu ride on a favorite Septa Regional Rail route as a result of a last minute change in travel plans due to an unforeseen circumstance. I wound up in Philly and needed to preoccupy myself so a round trip ride to beautiful Doylestown was in order. All stations, signals, interlockings, and most passing trains are identified. A bit of poetry was thrown in for good measure. I will do a separate return trip upload but it will be highlights of that ride and the loud K3LA horn the train had. Enjoy.

Tim, to the left of the Broad Street bridge and just beyond it was Baker Bowl, home of the Phillies from 1887-1938. There was an outfield wall billboard that said, "The Phillies use Lifebuoy." Legend has it that someone snuck in one night in 1935 and painted, "And they still stink," on the billboard!
That’s a good one 😀😀
I agree with that because I heard that too.
Loving the trees blooming at around 3:30. Even in North Philly, spring is alive!
Thanks for the reminder about Connie Mack Stadium. I remember being there as an 8 year old in 1968 and seeing Richie Alllen hit a homer over the left field bleachers out on to the street. What a memory!
Dick Allen for HoF 2024!!!
Allen was a very strong guy.
"Adversity" might've worked as the rhyme with University. (loved the poetry and references to Connie Mack and '80 Phils) But I digress. My second ride on SEPTA Regional Rail was on Lansdale/Doylestown Line on the very day of this video! And, I am only riding on these trains because of your videos, RRHG. My brother and I went for a meal at the Rittenhouse Grill and met at Lansdale for the 3:3Xpm ride to Suburban Station. (walked to the restaurant) After dinner, while waiting in Suburban for our train, I played one of your SEPTA videos for him. Missed it by that much! (the shadows suggested that you were on an earlier train) SLVs on the way to dinner, SLIVs on the return. Again, would not know any of this without your videos.
Glad I provide some inspiration for you. Left Suburban around 1:15 PM.
I remember the many trips I took on this line when it was still Reading Railroad to from Oreland to visit my parents. I've also ridden to Lansdale and Ambler.
Thanks for the memories💚👌
Looks like Conductor Paul trained you well in the poetry. Shoutout to Conductor Paul.
I’m coming down with that Conductor Paul disease 🤣🤣
@@3985uprr 🤣
You're rivaling Conductor Paul! Thanks for another great video. Great entertainment while I'm trying to wait out a health problem.
Get well soon
@@3985uprr Thanks! And you stay well and keep riding the trains!!!
Gwynedd Cut was a tunnel that was daylighted when the RDG electrified in 1931.
I heard that
nice video! you'll have plenty of chances to do the harrisburg rear view. you don't even have to sit in the last few rows, as long as you have your stuff somewhere in the car you're alright. when I did the ride westbound my stuff was 3 cars down and didn't have any problem since I was seat checked out of New York (though I did have to rescan my ticket after moving to the rear view so they knew I wasn't fare evading or something).
Understandable. Thanks. If I see another private party on that train, I’m going to insist on a straight jacket.
I watched your Metro North video to POUGHKEEPSIE and my wife and I took it. LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. And NO I didn't take the elevator to the walkway bridge 😂... maybe next time. THANK YOU. keep those videos coming
Tim and Philly is the same as peanut butter and jelly 😂
Grape jelly preferred. I do like chocolate tastykake donuts.
@@3985uprr I like grape jelly too....never had tastykake before
Catch that bomber every day off the Glenside siding! Get an amazing horn show too!
@15:44 Melrose Park where i cut my teeth railfanning the MU Blueliners, Budd and Louis and saw Septa phase in the GE Silverliner IV’s
The RDG didn't have any Louies (SL3 cars). The PRR was the only railroad that got them.
Septa has now added a Penn Central decal to one of the Silverliner 4 cars. Don't know if you caught it or not
Not in service yet
@@3985uprr I saw it today on the Wilmington line
@@3985uprr - Tim, the 401 has been released to the wild. It was last seen on the Norristown line tonight.
39:58 that creek goes to the schuylkil river - gets bigger as it goes south.
Rhyming like Conductor Paul 🤣😂
Tim, you aren't a fool when you go to Farm School!

At 29:43 was the site of the Camp Hill train station, just south of the site of the Great Train Wreck of 1856.
Fellwick
The town of Ambler was named for Mary Ambler who was amongst the first on the scene at that Wreck
@@jbreezy101- You're right. Camp Hill was the station name from 1884-1931.
@@OldsVistaCruiser I heard something about that.

Hey Tim.... Didn't they used to have to transfer to RDC's at Fox Chase for the rest of the ride to Newtown?
Yes they did. Then they started that ridiculous transit operation of the RDC’s after they discontinued the service in 1981
@@3985uprr Ok I thought so because overhead electric ended there. Did you ever ride the RDC to Newtown. I was really young but I rode PRSL RDC a few times with my family from Rio Grande Nj to Lindenwold and back. one car out of Cape May....one out of Wildwood....One out of Ocean City and I think two out of Atlantic City so when they pulled into Lindenwold they would be a 5 car set....I think. Maybe 6 cars. Was a long time ago and I was young. Channel is really been great! You're all over the place.... Hudson ... Delaware. Valley and all points in-between!! Thank you for providing the interesting and informative content!! Jack
Hi RRHG, I have a question regarding a specific location of a bank of double slips going into 30th St Station. Back in 1970 through 1972 or 73, I went to Columbia High School near 19th & Spruce Streets. After school, I walked thru Rittenhouse Park and toward 30th Street where my dad worked at General Electric. I always had an extra hour to spend before my dad got off work, and then we'd walk into the station to catch the Reading (pre SEPTA) train to Stenton Avenue Station. I just turned 69 and remember vividly the most fun experience on or near 30th Street looking down at a group of tracks through a chain link fence, watching and hearing the motors changing track routes and passenger trains going by continuously. My question is: does that area still exist? I've searched Google Maps multiple times and cannot find tracks with double slips below street level paralleling a street. Probably the landscape has changed in 50+ years. Thank you! Marc (originally from Philly)
I only know of 20th street interlocking before the tracks disappear into a tunnel towards suburban station
@@3985uprr Hi, Yes, that might be the location, maybe back in the 70's the tracks were exposed and not in a tunnel. I see on Google Maps the tunnel covering and I don't remember that. Thanks for your reply, and a big THANK YOU for all your fun videos! I like the Philly to Doylestown video because my Grandpop had a tailor shop facing the Lansdale station. Your videos bring back fond memories for me! Stay safe and have fun! Marc
Train goes very slow.
Track speed between Glenside and North Wales is 70 mph in most places.
Are you going to catch the Septa Bomb Trains?
1:09:38 who named that lol?
Good question
