I'm pretty sure my mouth was actually watering when I saw that card. It's just such an iconic card. That and the Honus Wagner are right up there on the Mount Rushmore of baseball cards. That's pretty shocking how it's only graded as a PSA 1. First off, it's centered nicely. There are a ton that were not only off centered, but they're also veryyyy slightly slanted. That card looks pretty clean other than the crease. And secondly, the color. It's still super vibrant. I would give the card a 2 on color alone because of how nice that looks. Add in the fact that the only real defect that you can see with the naked eye are the creases. It's a bit of a 'lightning bolt' sort of crease, but it isn't super prominent. It doesn't disfigure the image of his face and that's huge. But for me the fact that it has the name/signature looking clean is what makes that card. He has such a classic signature so seeing that on the card is $$$$$. Yes there are creases and a slight bend in a corner, but the card is from 1952. This isn't one of those gem mint ones that is going up on auction soon. I really think that, at the very least, that's a PSA 2 and possibly having a chance to go as high as 3 (but probably wouldn't since they'd want to keep the Pop down). The only downside for me is that when it comes to vintage I really, really like SGC's grading. I feel they do the most thorough and honest job for anything early 80's and older, but that's just my opinion. My goodness that card is a work of art.

Congrats Eric on finally getting your "Holy Grail" Mantle!!! Ironically it was a year ago that I was in Chicago for vacation and hit the National that has reignited my basketball card craze. I have easily spent over a $1000+ on cards since then.

Awesome Eric. When I was younger I remember seeing 52 Mantles that I could have bought at a show and didn't because that would be all I could get. So happy for you to get that card no matter what grade, to have that card in your possession is priceless.
That's the best psa 1 52 mantle I have ever seen. What a beautiful card! Been collecting 50 years and have never had the cash for such a purchase. There were some tables that were priced really high for graded cards. However I went today (Saturday) and I was able to haggle with most of the stands I went to luckily. Got a PSA 8 Bieber rookie and a PSA 8 Bichette rookie for $7.50 a piece, Griffey PSA 9 rookie for $30 and got a deal on almost every raw card I went after.
Was a nice challenge to work around my budget and I had a good time!

hi Jabs, I suppose it's in our nature to try to get a deal but sometimes you got to just pay the price they're asking. You could walk around and think about it and if you come back it could be sold. As you know it does cost a lot to set up, just stay focused on your goals. Huge congrats on the big Mantle. 'my 2 cents' p.s. your video's are great. Cheers friend : )

Congratulations on getting this. I'll never forget when I bought one of my holy grail cards. I too was sweating. 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #53, PSA 3. A card I had wanted since the 1980s, and got it in 2005. Now you've got me thinking about getting a 1952 Mickey Mantle. But after I get the 1938 Joe DiMaggio. Again, awesome you got it. Congrats on your Mantle Jabs, beautiful color on that card. Side note, as a kid, I got that Harry Caray / Michael Jordan card signed by Harry Caray at a Cubs spring training game. Still have it in my closet.
Jabs I think you hit the nail on the head, many dealers I dealt with today at the nationals were very standoffish all about this is the price and that's it. No conversation whatsoever I was honestly shocked but such is life still a great experience going to a national. Hope you enjoyed the area I call home.

I got my dad a '56 Mantle PSA 3 for Christmas 2019. Dad always wanted a decent Mantle card. Glad I got it for him cuz my dad passed away in Sept 2020. I ended up with it back plus his Upper Deck Authenticated Mantle autographed ball that I also got him before Mantle died. It's still has all the paperwork and the box from U.D. with it.

Congrat's on the Mantle. I was at the show Thursday and Friday and I found dealers generally willing to negotiate. Also - I own 5 sealed boxes of 1977 rack packs. Fantastic card year!

That's a pretty clean PSA 1. It has solid color appeal. Tough to get any kind of deals at Nationals, unless you buy bulk. Most singles are overpriced by 20% or more over sites like Ebay. You really have to dig. My favorite card of The Mick is his '56 Topps. But even in higher grade, it won't scale in value like his RC. Good buy! Best of luck with it.
The 52’ Mantle isn’t his rookie. It’s a 2nd year but far more valuable and desired than his rookie.
@@entropysmith6965 yeah I know that, but I don't consider Bowman's all that much in the 50s. Except for the '53 Color set - that was really nice.
@@entropysmith6965 Have you hit puberty yet? Did you just discover baseball cards? Some of us have been collecting for 40-50 years or more. We know what the ‘52 Mantle is and why it commands the prices that it does.

That exact Mantle sold at the Robert Edwards auction on May 23 for $39,600.That's pretty strange.

I think the Mantle has a pre .5 sub-grade label. I remember when PSA added the .5 sub-grades (and moving the number below the text), they were offering a service to see if the card qualifies for a .5 bump. Not sure they still offer that.

Congrats on buying your holy grail card! I'm curious what the seller paid for it from 808 if he was so quick to sell it to you for $40k. He must have made a decent profit on it to turn around and sell it so quickly. I'm excited about the 1977 box as that was my birth year - will be watching for when you put those on sale.
