The US had something similar to the clearances when the federal government moved hundreds of people off their land to create the Shenandoah National Park and, later, the construction of the TVA dam system all throughout the Appalacian Mountains (themselves largely settled by Scots). I enjoyed many camping trips to Shenandoah National Park, and the Applachian Trail. When I finally did some research into the founding of the park, my enjoyment was replaced with a sense I was trespassing. Then there were the removal of the Indians / Native Americans to reservations, like the Trail of Tears.
When doing my husband's Family Tree, found that they were cleared from the Highlands. They eventually settled in Co. Mayo in Ireland. We all know that this then suffered from the Potato Famine. They lost some family and came to England to work in the Midland foundries. I spent most of the time in tears. The father died young and she died penniless in the local workhouse, just tragic. People were nothing.

In the meantime, I have these wonderful programs.
Thanks Neil. Similar situation for the Irish in the famine years in 1840s and forced tenant clearances, starvation, deaths and mass immigration to the new world. Many Scots and Irish came to South Africa and helped build the country and then we are in a new history. Fascinating.
This is the way my Scottish ancestors arrived in the New World. We were raised to remember this. Times like we are experiencing today are not hard to see plainly, because we have kept that history alive. Nothing new under the sun.
Your latest reminded me of the invading British in, for example, Natal in South Africa. The British did not realise that the indigenous peoples saw their land in much the same way as the Scottish crofters. So resulted the Zulu wars.
The whole village of East Grinstead was moved for a landowner. East Grinstead was created to house them. It was called land enclosure and it happened to a lot of villages throughout the UK. Whether the elite are old fashioned barons or modern day corporations, the little people are always treated with disdain. We never learn that there are more of us and we can be powerful in our own right. It is going to happen again if the WEF get their way and move folk from the country into 15 minute cities that they will expand. The modern elites will then have the countryside to themselves. This is happening now all over the Western world
Thank you, Mr Oliver. They have been buying it up in many nations. In the USA they have had license renewal refused to farmers who refused to sell, making it impossible for them to continue. Here, an offshore investment company done a hostile takeover of morrisons supermarket. I believe for the farmland as it was the only one with its own farms. Also it seems to have been the only one to not sell unlabelled halal and kosher meat on its fresh meat counter. Was. I doubt it is now. Morrisons as a supermarket has very much deteriorated, and almost all of the usual very good and able staff of long time standing were sacked, replaced with staff who mostly don't seem as able and willing to help if neccesary. The seating for the elderly and disabled was removed as were the two disabled shopping motorised carts. Quality went down big time, as did choice but prices went up to over and above others supermarkets around here. Great shame. I truly believe the investment company wants only the farmland.
while listening to you I kept on thinking this is something that could happen in a very very near future... we will be forced to relocate, to go away from our homes even if we don't want to just to satisfy the greed of people who think that we belong to them...

I lived in a coal mining area in the 80s, my first job was at the pit. We were cleared by the rich because we weren't making enough money for them and because we didn't vote for the right party. I've spent the rest of my life travelling the country to stay in work. Now they're after you all.
I have a book, "Scotland Farewell" by Donald MacKay (pub McGraw-Hill Ryerson), which gives an account of the people who sailed to Pictou, Nova Scotia aboard the ship Hector in 1773. The tale begins with teenage boys standing on the northern slopes of Culloden Moor watching the rebel army of the Bonnie Prince forming into line of battle. Three pages later, the boys are high-tailing it for their lives, lest they be caught in "Butcher" Cumberland's massacre. These same lads, 27 years later are among those who make the voyage to Nova Scotia. It's just a wee book really, only a couple of hundred pages, but it certainly conveys the sense of homeland lost and the uncertainty of a new place. I love Pictou. My Grandad, born in Ayrshire in 1873, left his homeland for Canada in 1910. After a career with Canada Steamship Lines in Montreal (he was a marine engineer), he retired to Pictou, and is buried there with Grannie in the Haliburton Cemetery just a couple of miles west of town. I visit them whenever I'm able to get "down home" to Nova Scotia. Thanks for this episode Neil.
Happened before. The french revolution, the rusian revolution, mao`s revolution, castro`s cuba, pol pot`s cambodia...always the "cure" turned out to be worse than the problem. I feel the anger too, but if "we" (this heterogenic cacophonie with the unifying label of "the people") truely pay back with the same, and justly deserved, cruelty and malice...we´d not only never find enough water to wash all the blood away...but we´d become the same kind of monster we´d wanted to rid our lives from.
Wow..amazing I. did not know this about Scotland...but as an Irish person now living in Australia, it confirms my stance that the English were never racist. They treated everyone like inferiors as long as they could get away with it. Absolutely fascinating. Now I want to cone and visit and walk that beautiful country ..thank you xx

A background as to the nationality of the landlords and reference to the clearances that had occurred throughout the British Isles would have been useful.
The landlords were themselves Scots, indeed they were mostly the descendants of the clan chiefs. The “family” connection between the people and the chiefs was broken long before the clearances - arguably it started back in the early 17th c, a century before the Union, with the “Statutes of Iona” in 1609 under James VI & I. James was an enthusiastic unionist and (like many previous kings of Scotland) had a relationship of mutual distrust with the major clans. Scotland’s history is a lot more complicated than it is often portrayed.
G’day Neil. Thanks for the work you have put into this program. Having been born here in Australia this has given me a glimpse of the reason Dad left Scotland. As a low lander he found work in the mines until the call of ww1 opened him up to travel. After the Great war he he made his way to Australia, stayed for a while, bearing the heat then tried Canada but ended up in Australia again. I met a man in church with a Scottish accent, trying to strike up a conversation l introduced myself as the son of a Scotsman. He responded with I can show you the best road in Scotland. Taken in I asked. Which road is that? The road out of it he replied. Come to think of it, that’s the same road my father took.

There was also a Scottish potato famine. Almost as bad. Jim Hunter has written a book about it
@@angr3819 they did have livestock and other vegetables, it was taken under armed guard. When the people couldn't afford their extortionate rent they were burned out and left to starve on the street by the british army and police. Don't let the lie of lassai-faire economics brainwash you into what the british did in Ireland during this period
@@angr3819 Ireland was full of livestock and bumper crops at the time of the "famine." It was exported in a massive operation overseen by the British army. There was enough to feed the population three times over.
Thousands of tonnes of food was shipped out of ireland at the time.
This whole situation won’t get better until we take control of it ✊🏽
Time seems to be running Faster now don't you think ? Therefore we ought Not to Delay much anymore!!
As usual Neil, you're so awesome at educating us all, as soon as I can afford to I will join.. An amazing podcast ❤❤❤
Thank You Neil. Very insightful, God bless.
Thankyou so much Neil just love listening to you .🧘♀️🙏
An absolute legend. Speaks the truth.
Fascinating. In Polish the word for Clan, has a cognate. Klon. Also means Maple. Stay well, we are with you.
Neil this was a great episode and so relevant to the modern World today. WEF and holland etc. We have to remember it was the Scots Irish that were a major part that fought English armies that enabled America to have it's independence from England.
History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.
This is on Neil's series 'A HIstory of Scotland' BBC Series. Love that series, have his Vikings and Ancient Britain series and A History of Scotland on DVD. Very engaging history series all three.
Neil is a Mason, Neil is a liar.
Wow fbs podcast !! This has shown me that the 1st Nations People of the Americas are being treated in exactly the same way... so I imagine the same has happened/ing in Australia, New Zealand, African Countries, India, Middle East, Asia....? Did I miss anywhere?
Presentations such as this ARE changing perspectives with the WHOLE story. Present day reality has steered me into past harbours ... water seems calmer now.
Much Gratitude❣️😁
Thank you for this episode. I can really relate. My Scots ancestors definately were caught up in this and immigrated to Canada. I can feel the anger and suffering they must have felt. It might explain why I have a social justice consciousness.
I love your programs! Especially the ones that focus on Scotland. My dad's ancestors emmigrated to Nova Scotia and followed the logging camps through Canada down into what is now Michigan. My maiden name is MacDonald, and my late husband treated me to a honeymoon in Scotland back in 2006. Inteerestingly enough, Iver's family were Norwegian...a country that certainly occupies a colorful and marked presence in Scottish history.
scotlan a It was autumn and I'm left with a heart full of the memories of that magical trip and a desire and hope to return once more before I leave this world. In the meantime, I have these wonderful programs.
So many quotable passages. Excellent video on a terrible time of uncontrolled greed.
The Highland clearances were heinous.
Thanks Neil. That was a fantastic recounting of a part of history that could so easily be lost. Thank you.
Thanks Neil. Similar situation for the Irish in the famine years in 1840s and forced tenant clearances, starvation, deaths and mass immigration to the new world. Many Scots and Irish came to South Africa and helped build the country and then we are in a new history. Fascinating.
Fascinating adventure Neil, thank you.
@Punkster Sabaton's last music video was shot there, so Brummieland is gaining notoriety ;)
Most timely Neil ... we must beware of a repetition via another financial avenue !!
Where do people go when their circumstances become intolerable today?
The whole village of East Grinstead was moved for a landowner. East Grinstead was created to house them. It was called land enclosure and it happened to a lot of villages throughout the UK. Whether the elite are old fashioned barons or modern day corporations, the little people are always treated with disdain. We never learn that there are more of us and we can be powerful in our own right. It is going to happen again if the WEF get their way and move folk from the country into 15 minute cities that they will expand. The modern elites will then have the countryside to themselves. This is happening now all over the Western world
Other villages too all over.
#AbolishTheWEF End the control these unelected assholes think they have! #DoNotComply #DoNotConsent #WeAreThe99%
Neil Oliver national treasure...
International! ❤
Thankyou everybody at Love Letter. Your helping me make sense of some of my own history here in Perth, Western Australia ❤
Very interesting as always.
Thank you for the programs you do. I enjoy listening and learning. I also watch ( when I get time…) the woodlander and Bjorn from Norway. I would love to see you interview Simon ( the woodlander.) you two are so complementary, yet worlds apart but kind of meet in the middle. Have a good weekend. All the best from Portugal. 👋
A relative of mine, William Wilson joined the army, fought in Portugal in Napoleonic wars, wounded, picked up a Portuguese wife and foynd himself in Port Macquarie, NSW in 1821.
There is a lovely cemetery in Elvas Portugal for the British soldiers lost fighting Napolean.
Very well maintained by the local municipality even now.
BRILLIANT anecdote!
Great history.
Thank you so much....... ❤
The countess of Sutherland is reminding me of Bill Gates,
Both sharing psychopathic traits
Outright evil psychopaths!
I lived in a coal mining area in the 80s, my first job was at the pit. We were cleared by the rich because we weren't making enough money for them and because we didn't vote for the right party. I've spent the rest of my life travelling the country to stay in work. Now they're after you all.
Welcome to the WEF plan for us….
Amazing story! I was like wow!😮 Heartbreaking at times to listen to.😢
I have a book, "Scotland Farewell" by Donald MacKay (pub McGraw-Hill Ryerson), which gives an account of the people who sailed to Pictou, Nova Scotia aboard the ship Hector in 1773.
As a descendant of the Keith clan of Scotland I find your love letters very interesting! Great work Neil!
I thought Keith and O'Keith were Irish but now I know better. Thank you for mentioning.
Who knows maybe they connect somewhere way back! I have Irish ancestry as well but thru the Gillen name of county Derry( londonderry)
How many betrayals will the people take before WE finally hit back with equal callous cruelty to our unworthy elites?
Happened before. The french revolution, the rusian revolution, mao`s revolution, castro`s cuba, pol pot`s cambodia...always the "cure" turned out to be worse than the problem.
I feel the anger too, but if "we" (this heterogenic cacophonie with the unifying label of "the people") truely pay back with the same, and justly deserved, cruelty and malice...we´d not only never find enough water to wash all the blood away...but we´d become the same kind of monster we´d wanted to rid our lives from.
Always thought the term wind farms was a strange one. Sheep farms to wind farms, steady as you go green !!
Fascinating! Wow I didn’t know anything about this and so sad.
I was talking to my son about just this subject. Thank you, thank you for the sharing of this sad historical event.
I'm an American but my father was born and raised in Cheshire during WW2, he is 94 now. This is so sad to hear about the clearances. I have never heard of this history. It certainly appears history keeps repeating itself over and over. I always thought the Highlands were unfarmable and inhabitable. Knowing history is so priceless, especially now when there are many who want to forget it or rewrite it. You doing a great service by reminding us of Scotland's history, bad and the good.
My mother's people of the Clan McKay were "exported" from Sutherland shire. I visited Carbisdale Castle YHA where I and others were offered to turn on the picture of the Duke of Sutherland shire who was responsible for what you are talking about. Fortunately, they landed in New South Wales and became small landholder farmers, timber getters and builders of houses and bridges.
Loved this podcast , after completing my family tree, my ancestors Roderick and Margaret McKenzie (tennet farmers in Assynt) were moved away from the homes and duke of sutherland times ! Fascinating to here more about this and what they endured , thanks Neil , Cherry
Neil= oral scholar and a true gentleman 🙏😎
It's happening in the Netherlands.
Just signed up!
Thanks for all you do for us 🏴
All I can say is, thank you.
Great show again brother. I cant afford a subscription, but i have bought 2 books 📚. Audio
People are often shocked by what the Europeans did to the Native Americans but I wonder how shocking is it really when you consider what we did to ourselves before we ever came to this continent. It has been done before and it will be done again. Creator help those who must live through it.
Now we have a 'flock' of bipedal sheep. Nothing changes.
Speak for yourself
English (Yorkshire), I’ve got a great deal of respect and pride in all the tribes that make our country what it is.
But what I’m proudest of…is being working class.
Those countless unsung heroes. Mothers and fathers, working thankless jobs, to make our life possible, with no thanks given…nor requested.
mate you really know what working class means ,you epitomise it!
Resigned to subservience by your own self. A true loser.
An amazing and sad and (where I live) largely unknown - or at least, unappreciated - story from the past. Thanks for the in depth presentation of this tragic event. I'm one of those far flung 50 million of Scottish descent, and I found this very illuminating.
Cheers from Canada Neil. Love your videos and your a true hero. My brother lives in Falin outside Stirling there. Truly is an amazing place.
They're all meeting again in Davos later this month. Somebody...please
Exactly ☝️we should stop fighting among ourselves and take on the good cause for humanity.
The Exiles
The many ships that left our country
with white wings from Canada
They are like handkerchiefs in our memories
and the brine like tears
and in their masts sailors singing
like birds on branches.
That sea of May running in such blue,
a moon at night, a sun at daytime
and the moon like a yellow fruit,
like a plate on the wall
to which they raise their hands
like a silver magnet
with piercing rays
streaming into the heart. Iain Crichton Smith
What a touching and incredibly relevant episode. (Smith also has a novel from the point of view of an elderly woman cleared from the Highlands: Consider the Lilies)
Wow! so terrible for the farmers 😪 Let's hope history is not repeating itself again.😮 Thanks Neil.
It will if we don't end their #ClimateScam & #Agenda2030 The carbon they want to reduce is YOU! There's nothing wrong with the climate that can't be fixed by getting rid of a bunch of rich entitled bastards who cause more pollution in 1 yr than most will in a lifetime! If people don't wake up to the reality that we need to #AbolishTheWEF & most of our governments they will become complete slaves, they literally tell us what will happen "you will own nothing/be happy"! Wake up! #DoNotConsent #DoNotComply #AbolishTheWEF
The Highland Clearances - the Wound that keeps Weeping
Wikipedia doesn’t cover the history of Bettyhill as it only contains information about new commercial developments and the Guy Cup football competition. In an interesting synchronicity, Betty Hill is the name of a famous ufo abductee…a person taken against her will.
Wikipedia is revisionist history. Added to and taken away from at the whim of whoever is controlling the narrative.
I loved watching coast and now neil is raising points about the way we are being herded into becoming essentially cattle.
thank you for an insight into a part of GB history I was totally unaware of.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I think human history is so sad. Oh what must we do to step off the "merry"-go-round!!? 😅 Thanks for being a beacon of light with your podcasts.
History doesn't repeat but it rhymes. Fab episode. Xx
_______" The European Union and the Leaders of All European Nations MUST USE MIGRATION to Undermine the Homogeneity and Ethnic Identity of the Native European Peoples ! No Matter how Difficult this will be to Explain to the Citizens of Their Nation ! This WILL HAPPEN because it is Critical for Globalism to take hold of Europe ! "---------Peter Sutherland "The Father Of Globalism" (Speaking to the House of Lords) 2014
Unless we all start to point fingers at the real villains and name verifiable names then we get nowhere.
EXACTLY 👍
Good morning from Canada 🇨🇦
How do people get to 'own' the land, something that has been there for thousands of years before us?
Illusion my friend! Ownership is simply an illusion
@@madeleineswords704 'Unfortunate' that enough people go along with the illusion for an easy life that genocide is ok. It is still happening now in the world. I just hope more people wake up before it goes too far
They don't "go along" with their NHS, council funds cuts, cost of living, fuel "crisis" etc...etc, but don't realise that's where their money, wage cuts etc are going, are kept in the dark and misinformed to the hilt by the " fake news"( I've never heard a single anything in any "news" where the word "genocide" was used!
Nobody's life is easy, (people are stressed to the max)
not even the rich! And it's gonna get alot worse...
What even does waking up look like, anyway,
And what would "wake" them "up"...
What needs to change? What needs to be different?
Ps....it's already well past "too far"!!!
Amazing that you start in Betty Hill, Neil. I visited this area of Scotland in 2008 for work and stayed at the Betty Hill hotel. The job took me across the North coast, to Orkney (Sanday, Westray & Stronsay) and then Shetland. However, I remember well having a few beers in the bar at the Betty Hill hotel with some of the local lads and they said you had visited not long before. Wonderful memories!
And people are still doing nothing! There are more of us than them RISE UP !!
