    The US had something similar to the clearances when the federal government moved hundreds of people off their land to create the Shenandoah National Park and, later, the construction of the TVA dam system all throughout the Appalacian Mountains (themselves largely settled by Scots). I enjoyed many camping trips to Shenandoah National Park, and the Applachian Trail. When I finally did some research into the founding of the park, my enjoyment was replaced with a sense I was trespassing. Then there were the removal of the Indians / Native Americans to reservations, like the Trail of Tears.

    When doing my husband's Family Tree, found that they were cleared from the Highlands. They eventually settled in Co. Mayo in Ireland. We all know that this then suffered from the Potato Famine. They lost some family and came to England to work in the Midland foundries. I spent most of the time in tears. The father died young and she died penniless in the local workhouse, just tragic. People were nothing.

    The WEF has the same agenda for us now. Move the control of the land away from individual farmers, many who have a family involvement in farming going back generations, and increase the collectivisation of food production to large corporations. Many aspects of this are very similar to what happened in Russia after the 1917 revolution.

Whether the elite are old fashioned barons or modern day corporations, the little people are always treated with disdain. We never learn that there are more of us and we can be powerful in our own right. It is going to happen again if the WEF get their way and move folk from the country into 15 minute cities that they will expand. The modern elites will then have the countryside to themselves. They have been buying it up in many nations. In the USA they have had license renewal refused to farmers who refused to sell, making it impossible for them to continue.
    Here, an offshore investment company done a hostile takeover of morrisons supermarket. I believe for the farmland as it was the only one with its own farms. Also it seems to have been the only one to not sell unlabelled halal and kosher meat on its fresh meat counter. Was. I doubt it is now. Morrisons as a supermarket has very much deteriorated, and almost all of the usual very good and able staff of long time standing were sacked, replaced with staff who mostly don't seem as able and willing to help if neccesary. The seating for the elderly and disabled was removed as were the two disabled shopping motorised carts. Quality went down big time, as did choice but prices went up to over and above others supermarkets around here. Great shame. I truly believe the investment company wants only the farmland.

    we will be forced to relocate, to go away from our homes even if we don't want to just to satisfy the greed of people who think that we belong to them...

    I have a book, "Scotland Farewell" by Donald MacKay (pub McGraw-Hill Ryerson), which gives an account of the people who sailed to Pictou, Nova Scotia aboard the ship Hector in 1773. The tale begins with teenage boys standing on the northern slopes of Culloden Moor watching the rebel army of the Bonnie Prince forming into line of battle. Three pages later, the boys are high-tailing it for their lives, lest they be caught in "Butcher" Cumberland's massacre. These same lads, 27 years later are among those who make the voyage to Nova Scotia. It's just a wee book really, only a couple of hundred pages, but it certainly conveys the sense of homeland lost and the uncertainty of a new place. I love Pictou. My Grandad, born in Ayrshire in 1873, left his homeland for Canada in 1910. After a career with Canada Steamship Lines in Montreal (he was a marine engineer), he retired to Pictou, and is buried there with Grannie in the Haliburton Cemetery just a couple of miles west of town. I visit them whenever I'm able to get "down home" to Nova Scotia.
    Thanks for this episode Neil.

      Happened before. The french revolution, the rusian revolution, mao`s revolution, castro`s cuba, pol pot`s cambodia...always the "cure" turned out to be worse than the problem.
      I feel the anger too, but if "we" (this heterogenic cacophonie with the unifying label of "the people") truely pay back with the same, and justly deserved, cruelty and malice...we´d not only never find enough water to wash all the blood away...but we´d become the same kind of monster we´d wanted to rid our lives from.

It certainly appears history keeps repeating itself over and over. I always thought the Highlands were unfarmable and inhabitable. That sea of May running in such blue,

    like a silver magnet
    with piercing rays

    A background as to the nationality of the landlords and reference to the clearances that had occurred throughout the British Isles would have been useful.

    • @davidpaterson2309
      @davidpaterson2309 Год назад +2

      The landlords were themselves Scots, indeed they were mostly the descendants of the clan chiefs. The “family” connection between the people and the chiefs was broken long before the clearances - arguably it started back in the early 17th c, a century before the Union, with the “Statutes of Iona” in 1609 under James VI & I. James was an enthusiastic unionist and (like many previous kings of Scotland) had a relationship of mutual distrust with the major clans. Scotland’s history is a lot more complicated than it is often portrayed.

    G’day Neil. Thanks for the work you have put into this program. Having been born here in Australia this has given me a glimpse of the reason Dad left Scotland. As a low lander he found work in the mines until the call of ww1 opened him up to travel. After the Great war he he made his way to Australia, stayed for a while, bearing the heat then tried Canada but ended up in Australia again.
    I met a man in church with a Scottish accent, trying to strike up a conversation l introduced myself as the son of a Scotsman. He responded with I can show you the best road in Scotland. Taken in I asked. Which road is that? The road out of it he replied. Come to think of it, that’s the same road my father took.
