If you want a large single bowl but want to fill up a section with soapy water occasionally, simply use a dish pan that fits into half your sink. That's what our great-grandmothers did!

I've seen comments about a workstation sink like, "Why not just use a cutting board where you are cooking?" etc. I personally prefer to use a cutting board where the mess of it can be easily contained. At a sink, you just rinse the board after you're done with it instead of having to wipe down your counter space every time one is used.

I definitely prefer a double bowl sink. Someone is always gonna put dishes in one and you can at least use the other side, a disposal is on one side, you can rinse on one side/wash on the other, just so many uses. I also prefer offset drains so if someone puts a plate in there it's not stopping the drain (my pet peeve is dishes in the sink but it's hard to train housemates. lol) I love granite composite in black best, over 20 yrs and still cleans up looking new. Stainless ends up with so many scratches and dull and always looks dirty to me.

I am a professional cook and I've worked with many different sinks. I much prefer the double sinks as I clean as I go. So on one side I can wash vegetables, the other side I can wash a pot a few seconds later and then rinse it.
It drive me crazy working with one sink now. I hate having to wait and wash all the dishes at once. It's a personal preference but clean as you go is much harder with one sink. And the dish pans put in one sink are too small, in my opinion. Plus if you always have a sink with clean water, it's so much easier to wash your hands in the sink.

That's my dilemma. I've hate out double sink because it's too small for my big pots However, I'm afraid I would hate the single sink for the reasons you described. A shorter division also might be annoying because the divider could get in the way while washing large items.

Not a professional, but I like to cook and saving dishes is the last thing on my mind, so I also clean one or two things as a time as I go to kill some time while my fond is reducing or my meat is searing and to reduce the amount of dishes that pile up and have to be washed all at once afterwards.
I had a standard single when I bought my house but room for a standard double and an easy to open up laminate countertop, so I went that route pretty quick: like you say: have clean water in 1 bowl while there's a second bowl for rinsing veggies, draining pasta... But I struggled with washing my largest pots and oven trays in it (and those are just the things that also don't fit the dishwasher), so I changed it out again for a large single and put a bowl in it for the soapy water. My problem cleaning large items was solved but I hated dealing with the bowl, I also found that I didn't have enough storage near the cooking and prepping area...
I took drastic measures: gone is the open concept kitchen with adjacent pantry, I closed off the kitchen from the dining room and opened it up towards what was the pantry space, creating a long galley kitchen. One side of the galley kitchen is a wall of storage and appliances: drawers, cabinets, wall oven, microwave, fridge, and a chest freezer that doubles as emergency/overflow countertop. The other side starts with a standard double sink, then some countertop space, two cooktops (one gas, one induction), some more countertop space, and a large single sink on the other end: best of both worlds!
I LOVE having both the standard double ánd the large single, they complement eachother really well and this setup (along with the dual-fuel cooktop arrangement) is a major reason why I hope I never have to move to a smaller kitchen.

I was brought up to wash the dishes in one side, and rinse them in a sink of plain hot water on the other side. The rinsing water stays hot because the dishes I'm putting in it are already pretty hot, and it rinses away the detergent residue as well as leaving them hotter than they were coming out of the wash so they dry quicker.
I'm still kind of grossed out by the idea of washing dishes and not rinsing them, but running water to rinse every item separately is just wasteful of our limited supply of clean water.

  • @gijoyjoy

For soaking dishes I just use the larger dishes as the vessel to soak smaller dishes. I’ll use something like a yogurt container to soak my flatware, and a pot to soak small bowls or plates. I don’t have a lot of money for fancy under-sink storage, so I just purchased appropriate-sized semi-clear plastic containers to hold cleaning supplies, etc. They’re separated by categories so I just pull the out what I need like a drawer.

The BIGGEST reason for an offset drain is so a garbage disposal doesn’t take up as much usable cabinet space below. A center drain puts the disposal smack dab in the middle of the cabinet below, making the space behind it unusable and leaving small slivers of usable space on either side. An offset drain towards one side and the back leaves much more usable space for cleaning supplies or trash below.

you all analysing it and the only question I have is: why do you people put the dirt dishes INSIDE the sink? I mean, you use 5 cups with beverage and put INSIDE the sink, together with the plates used to eat a juicy barbecue. Now the cups that only needed a light scrub will have to go through the full soap bath and scrub because it's oily and greasy. I just rinse everything I use with right pressure water and leave OUTSIDE the sink with a drop of soap until I wash it. That habit alone cancels out the need for a double sink

I remodeled my modest ranch house kitchen 20 years ago and went with Corian countertops and an integrated corian sink. Best decision ever. The countertops were dark grey and the sink was white, and it still looked like new when I sold the house 5 years ago. I am a careful person, however, and I always let the pans cool off before I put them in the sink. Any scuffs from aluminum pans just buff out with a little Bar Keeper's Friend. (or Comet) At the time, I think the sink cost me only an extra $50 or so (they were running a deal).

I don’t know how on earth we manage to produce so many dirty dishes in a day - but we are dirtying dishes morning, lunch, snacks and if I cook that day…let me just tell you it will be enough to fill up a dishwasher. I’m spending on average about 40 to 50 minutes daily just washing dishes by hand.

Steve, I’m also a single dweller but I love my dishwasher (I don’t mow the yard or shovel snow either). I rinse my dirty dishes and place them in the dishwasher until I get a full load to wash - usually about every other day. As others noted, I do handwash some items that aren’t dishwasher safe (mostly chef knives and cast iron cookware), also some larger pots and cutting boards that don’t fit in my dishwasher). Those things I just wash, towel dry, and put away after use. For me, a large single (undermount farmhouse) is the best way to go.

If you use a curtain instead of doors on the sink cabinet and you have pets, rethink what you store under the sink. It's common to store household chemicals down there as well as trash bins. For the safety of your pets, store the chemicals elsewhere and make sure the trash bins are lidded. The bin lids will also minimize pest infestations.
Regarding sink placement, I always thought the window placement was so that the home cook could keep an eye on children playing in the yard or, in a rural situation, keep an eye out for "guests" approaching the property. I like the idea of a mirror over a wall-facing sink to a) reflect natural light into a workspace that tend to lack that feature and b) allow the home cook to see what's going on in the room behind them.

We are going through a major kitchen remodel right now. Tore out a partial wall in a vaulted ceiling area that divided the space into 2 smaller rooms. One room was the kitchen, the other a front room that we never used. Tore out that partial wall and doubled the size of the kitchen. Added a huge 10.5ft x 4 ft island, with double sink in it (never had an island before). The former sink was also a double sink, against an exterior wall. Since the plumbing already existed at the former sink, we just replaced it with a smaller single prep sink. Having 2 sinks in the kitchen is really awesome! So glad we did that.

Great video! My passion is cooking, and I make a lot of messes. Many tools, pots (esp. big stockpots and cast iron), anything wood, and utensils can only be handwashed (knives, crystal, appliance parts). So I need a big 2-sided sink that can take a beating without chipping, cracking, or denting. A word about wood sink accessories and wood counter surroundings - as beautiful as they are in the beginning, water and wood don’t mix. Unless it’s well-sealed and meticulously-maintained, wood is porous and absorbs everything that falls on it - especially oil. About stainless steel, it’s only a surface coating, and CAN be permanently damaged by certain cleaning products and over-zealous scrubbing, leading to rust, especially around the drain flange.

As a career single mother a double bowl double drainboard sink was ideal. Why? Because it was absolutely timely when hustling to wash all the dishes, leave them to drain on one side whilst using the other side to prep stuff yet have the area clean yet completing all the kitchen chores & getting oneself ready, on time, for work.

Forget accessories integrated in your 'work station' sink - keep it clutter free less to wash and keep hygienic. As for washing large pots etc in single large sink with an overflow drainage hole (my preference) - it's all a matter of a disciplined approach - clean pots first get them out of the way (leave them drying in the empty dishwasher.
Then later tackle the dishes - rinse and stack on the bench top and when you're in the mood either (1) wash and stack them in the empty dishwasher to air dry or
    (2) stack the dishwasher and set to run. The first approach for me conserves energy & surprisingly water and also softens hands for a manicure.
And yes I wash dishes by hand every day and leave to air dry in the empty dishwasher freeing up the countertop/draining board - this process is quicker than the dishwasher as it runs through its laborious cycle.
Finally rubbish bins under the sink - NO! it gets warm and humid in that space, a prime bacterial propagation environment - not only does it cause unnecessary wear 'n tear on the cupboard doors or drawers it is a source of inconvenience - sink use completing with rubbish disposal - keep them separate and independent and above all CLEAN!

My kitchen is small and didn’t have many drawers, so one of the first things I did was add tilt outs at the sink. I don’t think I’d ever bother doing that again as they are so small they aren’t all that functional. I do have my vegetable brushes in one (each are different softness bristles for corn, potatoes and mushrooms). In the other one I have used it for Scrunge pads, but I cut them into quarters so they fit. It also has a ring peg, which I’ve never used, but might be useful for some. If you add them, be careful that the handles you add to the front aren’t “pocket catchers” or you’ll wind up with lots of torn pants!

I don't use a disposal, I strain everything into a large coffee can lined with a plastic bag I get from the grocery store (usually above meat or veggie section). Use coffee can lid to keep smells contained (meat scraps always go into trash)

A hint for keeping a cutting board from sliding around while you're cutting on it is to place a damp washcloth underneath it;;;usually keeps it in place.
About the drawers and pull out shelves under a sink you need to consider accessing the plumbing when (not it...when) a problem arises. We have a filter system under our sink and my husband replaces the filter every 4 to 6 months...everything has to come out of that cabinet when he does this or he can't access the filter. We use bins that can be removed without any hardware having to be removed.

Appreciated the info. Getting ready to replace my sink and countertops. My townhome came with a u-shaped kitchen that has laminate countertops and an overmount double sink (the sink edge is raised about an inch above the countertop). Since day one, I’ve hated the double sink and it’s raised edge (doesn’t fit larger items and makes for more work cleaning the countertop after use). Thirteen years later, I’m finally getting ready to redo the sink and countertops. For their function and durability, I’ll install an undermount porcelain farmhouse sink designed for cabinet retrofits. I’ll also install manufactured quartz countertops for their durability. The sink will allow me to use two Rubbermaid tubs for the few things I hand-wash (cutlery, cast iron pans, cutting boards). I’m a bird hunter Sept thru Jan, and the farmhouse sink and tubs will work much better when cleaning birds in prep for freezing (sometimes I have around 15 to prep following a multi-day hunt). Undermounting the sink will really facilitate cleaning the countertop after prepping birds. I may opt for a worktop type farmhouse sink if I can find one made for retrofit projects. That would be nice to have for general food prep as my counter space is fairly limited.

Sink garbage disposals are illegal in many cities and communities in Canada, because they put excess strain on the sewage system. Here we compost food scraps, either individually, or many communities have municipal composting programs where compost is picked up on garbage day. The resulting end product is then available to community members to pick up and use in their gardens.
Re the sinks, I am most familiar with stainless steel single and double bowl sinks, and until my most recent house, I would only pick a SS double sink. However when my most recent house was renovated by the previous owners, they installed a single bowl clay-fired apron front sink. I didn't like it initially, but my husband ordered a small collapsible plastic container that we use when we only need a small basin of water. I became a convert and now I love it. We have moved and are adding a new kitchen to the new place, and I have been seriously thinking of buying one of those sinks for my new kitchen.

My family does major cooking and even canning from our large garden. We have a double sink. We will rinse dishes while we cook, so one side has soapy water, while the other side has bread rising (in warm water) or is available for washing produce. This is our lifestyle, so I think, as Mark says, sink choice should always be based on this. If you mostly eat takeout food, then maybe you don’t need a double sink. Choose what is most practical for you. By the way, I love the look of the big farmhouse sink-it just doesn’t work for my family.

Good advice. I absolutely agree with the recommendation of some sort of catch-all mat/tray/pan under the sink. A very common source of water leaks under a kitchen sink is the garbage disposal. They will eventually rust out and leak (it's not a matter of if, but when). And since this is a hidden area that doesn't get inspected very often, it can be leaking for months without even knowing. Not sure how long the leak was happening to the previous owner of my house, but I had to devise a false floor on the bottom so I had some storage and wasn't starting at a huge hole every time I opened the cabinet. That was 10 years ago - I had to replace the disposal 5 months ago when IT started leaking ... that's at least 2 and this house is only 22 years old.

Loving our new 16 SS sinks - a large 33" single basin and a bar sink by back door. My only issue is the distance between the faucet and back splash. Bar sink has 4.5 inch clearance and large sink only 1.5". If I could do it over, I would get closer to 4" behind the main sink faucet by pulling the cabinets further away from the wall. I'm constantly drying the area behind the faucet so it doesn't get mold on tile. The back splash behind the bar sink never gets wet.

    • @kevinc1956
      @kevinc1956 6 месяцев назад

Not sure that’s correct. Standard cabinets have 36”countertops, so farmhouse and most other sinks would be at the same height. Plus, the farmhouse sinks bring the front edge of the sink right to the edge of the cabinet (maybe even out 1-2” from the cabinet edge for some), so that would seem to be less reaching (e.g., less torque on the spine lifting heavy pots/pans) than sinks that are recessed a couple inches back from the edge of the cabinet. For tall folks, 40” cabinets might be a better option. My current sink (soon to be discarded) has an edge raised 1”above the counter; to me that just makes it more work to clean the countertop. If you try to install a porcelain farmhouse sink yourself, you may wind up with a backache or worse though! 🤕

Although I don’t like my corner butterfly sink, I have a laminate counter with a seam under the sink and have had no issues in the 38 years I’ve been in my home. That said I do not have a mitered corner preformed laminate, which is maybe what you were referring to. My counter was built on site by previous owners with sheet laminate and because the U shape kitchen is wider than the longest available sheet laminate a seam was done where it would be the least noticeable and shortest, in the front and back few inches under the left sink bowl. Absolutely no water issues, destroyed laminate or under cabinet water damage and it’s probably over 40 years old. I’m not sure exactly when the previous owners installed it, but it could be 60 years old if they did it the year they moved in.

A few years back, we had a small, unnoticed water leak under the sink that only became apparent when I saw that the 5 gallon water tank for our RO water system was slowly sinking thru the particle board floor board. I cut it all out and replaced it with 3/4 " plywood, painted with multiple coats of primer and exterior paint to waterproof it, and I installed it with a small tilt so that any future water leaks will spill out onto the floor, where it will be noticed sooner. Better a puddle now than a failed cabinet box later.
We are currently doing a kitchen reno, removing the failed and cracking tile and its concrete underlay, and putting down new plywood in prep for a stone top of some sort, probably quartz. Having learned about water and wood being a bad combo, EVERY bit of plywood, ESPECIALLY the edges, are getting multiple coats of primer, particularly at the sink cutout.
We chose a Lordear 32" workstation single bowl, center drain stainless steel sink. Since the quartz is some ways off, I temporarily installed it in the plywood top, and it is a HUGE hit. I was able to drill 2 additional 1 3/8" holes for a total of 4, to accommodate the install of our RO water tap and a soap dispenser. Long ways to go, but at least we are no longer doing dishes in the laundry room.

I am going to put in a dish rack to cut down on the chance of damaging the porcelain. I still wash a lot of dishes (just seem to enjoy doing it) and cook a lot so I am washing pots and pans all the time. The double bowl with the lower divider looked promising and if I did more baking where cookie sheets and roasting pans came into play I would have went with it.
