i think its worth pointing out that succubus doesn't necessarily mean "female" and incubus doesn't necessarily mean "male". the prefix "suc" comes from the latin "under" and the prefix "in" means "on top" so really, succubi are bottoms and incubi are tops. hope this helps :)
While everything you said is true, the "hope this helps." feels like this is important knowledge we're going to have to study for on the test. I'm so concerned, WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW THIS FOR
If I recall my late-night wikipedia rabbit holes correctly, some medieval "scholars" even believed an in/succubus could switch between one or the other.
I only recently realized that “If you give a mouse a cookie” is like a classic fairytale where the life lesson is just “don’t feed wild animals.” I mean it’s obvious in retrospect, but I didn’t think about it as a kid.
Nah it’s learning to draw clear boundaries and to say “no.” The relationship between the narrator and the mouse is clearly meant to be symbolic and the lesson is more complex than “mice in house bad”
Okay but minotaur headcanons: - He starts out as a boogeyman for this one child but the kid never does anything wrong so he's constantly bored and regretting life decisions - The kid feels bad for him and decides to ask him if he wants to join the game he's playing. They become buddies. - The bull gets to enjoy these new things as he spend his entire childhood alone in a labyrinth. For the first time someone sees him as a friend. - The kid opens up about issues with his parents and school bullies. The bull starts to read books about parenting and child psychology to learn about different ways to help this kid out. - As the kid grows up, the bull decides to help out more children with the knowledge he's gathered throughout the years. He no longer wants to punish children, he is ready to protect them. To give them the childhood they deserve, the one he never got to have. He becomes famous and beloved, to the point of overtime changing the meaning of the word ''boogeyman'' to something positive, like a fairy godparent.
When Karina joked about fusing mythological creatures with chairs, I got an idea. What if you used a text-generating AI with a prompt like "IKEA unveils a never seen before type of furniture", and try to design whatever the AI describes and find what it's for ?
“Undine” by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué is a German fairy-tale-esque story, which was actually part of my German A-levels curriculum. It’s also pretty misogynistic. I dont want to retell the whole story but basically Undine’s really outgoing, and lively, and uhh cheeky. And one day she meets a knight who she fancies and falls in love with, I think he likes her too. Anyways, they’d get married and do the dirty and then the next morning she’s like a completely different person. Suddenly she’s quiet and reserved and has become like the perfect housewife. This is because, by marrying a human, she got a soul. (Which is like super fucked imo on various levels but i digress). Her husband knight now no longer fancies her and basically falls for a different and noble woman, who Undine actually befriended. One day all three of them they go on a long boat ride down a river. Undine’s uncle, who has been trying to break them apart the whole story, steal a necklace from that other woman. So Undine gets her a different one from the river. But unfortunately her knight husband has had enough of this and of her uncle and so he curses/ insults her while they’re still on the water. Now this is a huge no no - he was not allowed to do that. And so Undine gets pulled into the water and is forced to live in the kingdom of her people in the sea of something. Her husband, who of course thinks Undine is dead, now wants to marry that other woman. Undine warns him in a dream that, if he does that, she’ll have to kill him. He does it anyway. So Undine comes out of the water, kisses her husband, and cries him to death.
I love that Karina is a fellow ace that reads smut. It’s the perfect bedtime story - straightforward plot, requires 0 brain cells, and usually a happy ending.

Not only did Daedalus build the labyrinth to trap the minotaur, he helped create the minotaur in the first place--by order of the queen, he built a fake hollow cow in which the queen could wait for the god-sent bull and...yeah And then he and his son were trapped in his own maze and had to build wings to escape, only for his son to fly too high and fall and drown. Poor Daedalus can't catch a break.
Deadalus was just trying to help his Queen get laid by the bull only to them hae to build the kid a house/labyrint and be forced to live in it, all because the king didn't kill the dang thing

The sheer and pure excitement over the imagery of a blemmy was the best thing. Jacob yelling "OOOOOOHHHH YESSSSS" while Karina simultaneously screams in pure joy in the background is golden. Also, giving them the name "blelf" just made me think of "belf" from World of Warcraft.
Aw, man. That retelling of the myth of the minotaur missed the best part. When Pasiphae wanted to sleep with a bull, she had to trick it into mounting her, so she had Daedalus build her a wooden cow to get in that the bull would so wanna do.
Actually succubus comes from the latin word "succubare" which means "to lie under" and incubus comes from the latin word "incubare" which means "to lie on". So incubi are always tops and succubi are always bottoms. Gender doesn't matter at all.
I love how words like "Fabulous" change meaning over time so when you read about the Minotaur being fabulous you think they must be very fashionable and sexy vs just being not real. (See also: fantastic, incredible)
Fun prompt for a future episode? Combining two characters with the same name but from different media (ie. Sandy from Spongebob and Sandy from Grease). Mashing the characters together, or swapping them, or drawing one in the style of the other would be so cool!

"no one ever asked the minotaur what he would be doing if left to his own devices" this is poetry!! The double meaning of "device" as "decision " and "invention" with Minos and Daedalus making the decisions and trapping the minotaur in the invention of the labyrinth... The fact that the minotaur was half human... I'm tearing up
Incubi and succubi, at least in _D&D,_ are actually the same creature. They're shapechangers and can use an action to freely switch between incubus, succubus, and humanoid forms.
I actually remember reading about the Blemy awhile back. So apparently they originate from a tribe in Africa that Europeans used to trade with. Except the Europeans never met with these people close up and only ever saw them from a distance. I believe they traded with them through some Arabic people. Because this tribe lived in the dessert they wore head scarves to protect their heads and these head scarves would completely cover their head. Because the European people were seeing them from afar, it would look like the people had no head and were just wearing a hat. So people assumed their face must be on their chest. I might of gotten some of the details a bit wrong but that’s the general gist of it. I think was the Romans who mainly traded with them. And of course many few people actually got to travel there to do the trades so information spreading through weird just helped amplify the myths.
I read a thing at some point and I think it said that eventually the myth evolved into them showing up to cheer up sad people, so when they said "the blemy is just chillin" they were kinda correctt
The fact that they keep coming back to chairs gives me big industrial design student vibes and I love it. The solution to every design problem is a chair
@@Sloodefg in the intro Jacob was saying they were going to be combining two things, mythological creatures. Which seemed like we were waiting for the second thing to be listed and Karina said “and chairs” because it’s the first thing she could think of.
It would be really cool to see them do this again as a speed draw, partially because I'd love to see what they'd do when they have more time and get to choose which creatures they combine, and also because I really want to see Julia do this challenge as well.
I loved those books growing up because the message completely flew over my head all I learned from them is that if you give a cute animal some food and build a little home for it you could be best friends and I thought that was sick
I also completely missed the message. Little me always thought it was about being able to assert healthy boundaries and only give what you are able without hurting yourself. That was probably just because my mom was a good teacher of moral lessons regardless of the story
The "conservative propaganda for toddlers" rabbit hole is a fascinatingly horrifying one. If anything this is the shallow end of the pool - at the other end you have picture books about kids trying to run a lemonade stall and getting shut down by council regulations.

Suggestion! What if y’all change your “roles” for the next character design ep? Nathan draws the hot one, Jacob draws the arcane horror, Karina draws the dinosaur lie/big dumb ape, and Julia draws the cool, sassy one.
A chair is a piece of furniture with a raised surface supported by legs, commonly used to seat a single person. Chairs are supported most often by four legs and have a back; however, a chair can have three legs or can have a different shape. Chairs are made of a wide variety of materials, ranging from wood to metal to synthetic material (e.g. plastic), and they may be padded or upholstered in various colors and fabrics, either just on the seat (as with some dining room chairs) or on the entire chair. Chairs are used in a number of rooms in homes (e.g. in living rooms, dining rooms, and dens), in schools and offices (with desks), and in various other workplaces. A chair without a back or arm rests is a stool, or when raised up, a bar stool. A chair with arms is an armchair; one with upholstery, reclining action, and a fold-out footrest is a recliner. A permanently fixed chair in a train or theater is a seat or, in an airplane, airline seat; when riding, it is a saddle or bicycle saddle; and for an automobile, a car seat or infant car seat. With wheels it is a wheelchair; or when hung from above, a swing. An upholstered, padded chair for two people is a 'loveseat', while if it is for more than two person it is a couch, sofa, or settee; or if is not upholstered, a bench. A separate footrest for a chair, usually upholstered, is known as an ottoman, hassock, or pouffe.

i think its worth pointing out that succubus doesn't necessarily mean "female" and incubus doesn't necessarily mean "male". the prefix "suc" comes from the latin "under" and the prefix "in" means "on top" so really, succubi are bottoms and incubi are tops. hope this helps :)

I only recently realized that “If you give a mouse a cookie” is like a classic fairytale where the life lesson is just “don’t feed wild animals.” I mean it’s obvious in retrospect, but I didn’t think about it as a kid.
Oh.
Thats what the lesson was?? I thought it was like don’t be a pushover and stand up for yourself or something
Nah it’s learning to draw clear boundaries and to say “no.” The relationship between the narrator and the mouse is clearly meant to be symbolic and the lesson is more complex than “mice in house bad”
Pretty sure the lesson is, "Mice should have to pay for their own healthcare."
Okay but minotaur headcanons:
- He starts out as a boogeyman for this one child but the kid never does anything wrong so he's constantly bored and regretting life decisions
- The kid feels bad for him and decides to ask him if he wants to join the game he's playing.

Not only did Daedalus build the labyrinth to trap the minotaur, he helped create the minotaur in the first place--by order of the queen, he built a fake hollow cow in which the queen could wait for the god-sent bull and...yeah
And then he and his son were trapped in his own maze and had to build wings to escape, only for his son to fly too high and fall and drown. Poor Daedalus can't catch a break.
Deadalus was just trying to help his Queen get laid by the bull only to them hae to build the kid a house/labyrint and be forced to live in it, all because the king didn't kill the dang thing

This is a subplot in Beauty and the Beast
For some reason Nathan moving the Minotaur horns lower down immediately upon hearing it was an under bed creature got me giggling

You've ruined my brain for the day. Thank you for your service. 🤝🏼
Ah Yes... The best part, the part everyone loves, the animal abuse part XD

Actually succubus comes from the latin word "succubare" which means "to lie under" and incubus comes from the latin word "incubare" which means "to lie on". So incubi are always tops and succubi are always bottoms. Gender doesn't matter at all.
Sometimes words adopt new meanings over time, especially when they're borrowed from other languages.
My first thought when I heard "Elf + Blemmy, a headless creature" was "how do you make them part-elf without the pointy ears?!"
Just put the ears on the side of the chest, or make them nipples
I was begging Jacob to put the ears where the mammaries go
really big eighties shoulder pads, but built in, and also ears
This episode is free of cats 2019 talks but not of f*ck demons shaming.
I love how words like "Fabulous" change meaning over time so when you read about the Minotaur being fabulous you think they must be very fashionable and sexy vs just being not real. (See also: fantastic, incredible)
Like how 'awful' used to mean 'full of awe', hence being used to describe angels sometimes
Fun prompt for a future episode? Combining two characters with the same name but from different media (ie. Sandy from Spongebob and Sandy from Grease). Mashing the characters together, or swapping them, or drawing one in the style of the other would be so cool!
A punishment minotaur that lives under your bed sounds exactly like something Karina would be into.

"no one ever asked the minotaur what he would be doing if left to his own devices" this is poetry!!
That is hilarious
I read a thing at some point and I think it said that eventually the myth evolved into them showing up to cheer up sad people, so when they said "the blemy is just chillin" they were kinda correctt

Hearing about those books villainizing generosity being fed to toddlers explains so much about the USA.
I loved those books growing up because the message completely flew over my head all I learned from them is that if you give a cute animal some food and build a little home for it you could be best friends and I thought that was sick

*taking notes*
