    my first and only HT is GT-5R basically the same radio but a bit "cleaner" on transmit. Don't let the sad hams put you off. For the money you can't go wrong.

    Respect to you for your advocacy of the UV-5R as an entry level HT! The low price point of the UV-5R convinced me to buy a pair of them back in November of 2023 on a black Friday sale just to have for preparedness sake. I ended up talking to a local HAM about my purchase and he encouraged me to get my tech license. Fast forward to today around 6 months later and I am an active member of the local HAM club and just passed my Amateur Extra exam last week. In my opinion the people complaining about your review are overlooking what a great thing these affordable radios are for the growth of the hobby. Or maybe they don't want to see the hobby grow and thrive. Either way I disagree with them completely and support your decision to promote these radios for beginners. Cheers!

    I just watched the SNL episode where Tom Hanks is a roadie for Aerosmith on Wayne’s World. He was setting up their mics and kept saying “sibilence, testing sibilence”…. I thought K8MRD must have taught him that … lol

    Thanks Mike for this video. I have a Radioddity which is the same thing more or less. I agree with you that these radios are pretty cool for the money. I hear the old timer hams say these radios are junk but for someone like me who doesn't have a lot of money to spend they are worth gold!! Your the man and keep the videos coming!

    Back in the time I got I to ham radio, an htx 202 and htx 404 were about $200 each. That's over $400 each in present day money. To celebrate becoming active again before I retire, I bought 2 baofeng 5rm, two baofeng 1701, and a quansheng k6. 5 radios for less than what I spent on two single band radios. The quansheng is slated to eventually get the daughter board installed, currently it is using the egzumer firmware. The 1701's are set up with one original firmware and one with opengd77. The 5rm's are just stock aside from the frequency being opened up. They are programmed with all the repeaters within 50 miles, and should I go to houston or San Antonio to visit a sister, it is a quick add via chirp, or cps for the digital radios. The capabilites of modern radios is light years ahead of where it was when I first became a ham.

    I have many Baofeng radios. for the price they are great. make a great back up radio. and with Digi rig and cables you can do some digital with it. like SSTV . radio is FM only ,so only some digital modes will work. got the UV-5G as well . but GMRS and can un lock . but the radio is SMA-F on that one. only UV-5 type I found different. also some labeled UV-5X are SMA-F on radio. the UV-5R+ is bigger display and battery but same radio. different menu system. just check them for harmonics. they test all over from radio to radio. 73's

    Some explanation of licence requirements/restrictions might help newbies. plus the limitations of 2M/70CM and that that's what you're stuck with using this kit. How to get past this into the more interesting and challenging world of HF would be helpful too.

    • @gblname
      @gblname 2 дня назад

      Maximum range very depends on your antenna, frequency, geographical and meteo condition, etc. It can be 500 meters with stock small antenna inside the basement, it can be 150 km with a directional antenna outside, it can be 1500 km if you use that antenna on satellite

    They're dirt cheap, can get you on the air and hit the local repeater. Great for a first HT, and when you grow out of it, you can keep it as a backup or maybe pass it on to someone who is curious about ham or considering getting a license. Don't be a snob.

      Yeah, my old uv5r, the main source of motivation for me to pass the tech test, initially tested clean, but after months of low tx use it is now no bueno. Now around 6months later, I also have my general, an ic7300, several other "spendier" HT's, nanovna, and my eyes are now set on an sds100. I swear to you if I was told the 5r was not OK for a beginner, and I had to spend $40 for my first fix, I would have put off getting my license for years if not indefinetly. It's not that $40 is a burden for me, but I'm a cheap skate and tend to heavily regret spending even a penny on a hobby I won't stick with long term. So I get the point of this video, and support marketing the 5r to noobs on the fence about getting a tech license and learning more about spurious emmissions, etc. Tho, tbh I think the k6 may be a better fit for this these days. It costs a tad more, but has a lot more features that would be attractive to noobs I think.

    For 17.49 you get a dead amateur band with nothing worth beimg there for anyway cause people dont speak to each other , at least in a civilized manner, much less with any content of value to speak of.
