That line, though. Always so powerful. There's two kinds of suicide, but we often conflate them. Brooks wasn't proving anything in some pointless and juvenile display of vengeful pageantry. He was exercising control of that inevitable moment. He "decided not to stay." I respect that.
The Warden's pass out was a cowardly one. Brooks' wasn't.

    Things you need to notice:
    1) Red's mugshot is actually a picture of Morgan Freeman's son.
    2) Andy hid the rock hammer in the Bible, in the book of "Exodus" (meaning "Exit")
    3) Red called Andy's hope a "shitty pipe dream", and Andy escaped through a "shitty pipe".

Also, regarding #3 (and even better in my mind): we get one of my all time favorite shots in cinema: right after Andy says "you either get busy living or get busy dying" to Red, we get a wide shot with the prison wall they're sitting against on the right side of the frame. And there's a distinct line of sunlight and shadow that comes sloping down on the backwall, with the light side on the left side of the frame. Andy gets up from the wall and walks from it into the sunlight, Red also stands up but stays in the shadow.
Right here we get a perfect visual representations of both characters mindsets in that previous conversation. Andy was talking about what he wanted to do when he got out of prison, Red was talking about how he was institutionalized and wouldn't survive on the outside and cautions Andy to not let himself get hopeful like that and chase the pipe dream. Andy's mind is already on the outside (because he already knows hes planning to escape that night), so he's completely in the sunlight. Red's mind is still in the shadow of the prison as he's convinced himself he's better off in there.
But then Andy says "Red, if you ever get out of here, do me a favor" and we cut to a shot of Red walking towards the camera and the sunlight. The rest of that convo plays out with over the shoulder shots between Red and Andy as Andy tells him about the rock under the tree. And then right at the end of that convo, we cut back to that same wide angle shot as before and we finally see Red's position in relation to the right. Most of his body is still in shadow, but his head is now in the sunlight. So we get a representation of the little bit of hope this convo instilled in Red's mind; he now has something to do on the outside. And even though he wouldn't have his freedom yet, and is thus still mostly in shadow, we eventually find out that Andy's little treasure hunt is part of what helps Red move on and avoid the fate of Brooks.
From a visual story telling standpoint, that wide shot is phenomenal. And there's few other shots in cinema that I can recall that accomplish so much with such a "simple" shot.

The bit where the warden has Tommy killed and then follows it up with that monologue to Andy in the hole has long struck me as the moment where you realize just how profoundly evil he really is. To be clear, you weren't under any delusions about him being a good person before, but there was a chance you might've read him as more corrupt than anything. Self-interested and ruthless, using a prisoner to help line his pockets, and so on, but then he has a man murdered. And that monologue is just something else; a villain speech just dripping with evil.

In that conversation between the warden and Andy I think the warden was only thinking about one thing- Andy knew enough about the murder and corruption going on in that prison to put the warden himself in prison. There was no way the warden was ever going to let Andy walk out of that prison alive. I think the warden was shocked that Andy even thought getting out was a possibility. Andy was calling the warden obtuse when Andy was the obtuse one. You can't blame him though, he lost his composure because this was his one chance to get his conviction overturned.

Andy thought that was the reason the warden would be nervous about helping prove andy's innocence (at this point the warden is committing felonies with Andy's help). i think you're right, i dont think the warden fully understood Andy's "obtuse" comment. I think he was blinded by anger at Andy's assurance he wouldn't say anything, recognizing that andy had a little bit of leverage on the warden which didn't sit well at all.

Good reaction again guys, but I have to ask why was the after talk so short, or even almost practicly absent? I think most of us enjoy your comments after the movie. It also looked like you've cut them out for some reason, why would you do that? I was a little disappointed as I was hoping you'd tell how you felt about many moments of the movie and maybe discuss many real-life topics that are related to the movie. I hope you include more of your post-movie dialogue in your future reactions.

    2 things:
    1) If you aren't affected by the Brooks scene, no matter how many times you've seen this movie, you're not human.
    2) One of the best escape-related details IMO, is when "Randall Stevens" first walks into the bank. When the camera follows him from the feet up, you can see that his pants are too short...the cuffs sit a bit higher than the tops of his shows. Which makes sense, since Andy is several inches taller than Norton, whose clothes he's wearing.

I still have my copy of "Different Seasons" by Stephen King (The book this story was in). 4 stories that were an amazing read. Another one of those stories is "The Body" which a little movie called Stand By Me was based on. I HIGHLY suggest watching that movie and reading Different Seasons.

@@markhamstra1083 These are movie costumes. They don’t have to be literally the same physical garment for the film to represent Andy wearing Brooks’ cardigan. After all, we also see Andy wearing the warden’s suit and shoes. It looks like a perfect fit, despite a similar size difference between the actors.

@@JohnK75136 🤣 riiiiight, the film is representing Brooks and Andy wearing the same magic, one-size-fits-all cardigan. Or, maybe that’s just the one style of sweater that is available as prison issue.

@@markhamstra1083 Oh for pete's sake, get over it. Tim Robbins is also significantly taller than Bob Gunton. And yet in the movie we see Andy wearing the warden's suit, fitting him perfectly. Again, these are movie costumes. There's a certain amount of unreality in all movie making.

I know I'm late to the party but just in case no one has mentioned it...
The cardigan Andy was wearing was originally the one Brooks wore.
There's another Frank Darabont movie that isn't as good as either The Green Mile or this movie but it's still very good.
It's called The Majestic and it stars Jim Carrey. Darabont was going for a Frank Capra feel and homage to his movies with this one.
Another great movie with Morgan Freeman is Lean On Me, based on a true story and very uplifting. Directed by the same director as Rocky and The Karate Kid. Highly recommend.
    Best Regards!

I don't think they ever detail how old Brooks was when he got out of prison, but I do know that James Whitmore (an almost EGOT member... the EGOT being short for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winner... all Whitmore needed was an Oscar; he'd been nominated several times, but never won) was 73 when he performed in this film.
Just as a piece of trivia, the current list of EGOTs includes (in order of the individual completing the EGOT): Richard Rogers, Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, Barbara Streisand, Liza Minelli, John Gielgud, Audrey Hepburn, James Earl Jones, Harry Belafonte, Marvin Hamlisch, Jonathan Tunick, Mel Brooks, Mike Nichols, Whoopi Goldberg, Scott Rudin, Quincy Jones, Robert Lopez, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, John Legend, Alan Menken, and Lin Manuel Miranda.
Richard Rogers, Marvin Hamlisch, and Lin Manuel Miranda are actually PEGOTS, as all three also won the Pulitzer prize.

Steven King is known for his horror (of course) but his dramas and character studies show how good of a writer he really was. He was a terrible director though (go watch Maximum Overdrive for a good laugh at a bad movie). On the other hand... between acting, directing, writing and cast, this is one of the the greatest movies ever made.
