Passed through Mongolia a few years back on a Moscow/Beijing train journey. Didn't stop there, but what impressed me most about Ulaanbaatar were the yurts on the slopes of the hills surrounding the city. It felt very evocative - the old life and the new, two aspects of Mongolia in one place!

Nah, it happened because Mao was an absolute nutter. Khreschev, like other leaders of his generation, was a committed communist, but he was also interested in stability. The Soviets and Western leaders had serious differences and constantly sought to undermine each other, but they played by certain rules and remained within certain boundaries. It doesn't hurt that the Chinese were unhappy with being the junior partner in the former alliance. They didn't care that much about ideology, but they did care about being so much weaker and so reliant on the Soviets.

Central-Asia really is a part of the world that is rarely covered on RUclips, seems like a mysterious and interesting place. Well, I know Mongolia is East but many of the ex-Soviet countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyztan are similar if you know what I mean... Big mountain ranges, steppe, shared commie history...

"mountains and stepps"... what else? "they were always drunk on vodka but not mongolian muslims but I don't much much because I'm an amerikan".

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan are similar because they are basically the same people, other Central Asian states are also Turkic and Muslim, but Mongolia is neither Turkic nor Muslim, nor was it a part of the USSR.

@@chepushila1 Never said Mongolia was part of the USSR. It was a communist dictatorship though, like the other countries mentioned.

I read somewhere in the internet that socialist mongolian government asked soviets to join USSR, but soviet government would have refused since Mongolia isnt a historic russian territory.

That and it had more use as a buffer between Russia and China. The USSR was very pro-Mongolian independence.
