This was one of my favourite 'what the heck just happened' cities. A quick trip from Amsterdam to a visiting friend in a town I never heard of lead way to what I will defend, as the greatest festival in the world. Maastricht you are special, never change.
We really lucked out with the timing of this visit, I only wish we brought the camera out sooner, although actually partying was definitely the better choice (struggles of a documentarian).
Right. Especially the start when I record the beginning of one of the paraders. I wish I had the energy to record the party but it was too exciting to be a photographer and not a partier lol
I discovered Maastricht last year, with my colleague and her daughter. Was a pleasant surprise and lovely town. I was there during Carnival, many shops were then closed. So we wet to Aachen from there the next day.
So cool! Yea it was a complete surprise for us too -- a friend goes to University there and saw that we were in Amsterdam and insisted we come. It was the best detour ever.
It really was! Make sure to plan a visit during Carnival next year -- the attention to detail and quality of the costumes is unmatched. Better than Rio, Better than Venice, Better than New Orleans, it is simply the greatest festivities in the world today!
In the fifties I wandered these streets as a gamin. Karnaval could be cold and rainy or even snow. The cap gun had to be reloaded with rolls of caps from the local candy store. During Karnaval, you were quite free, going all over with no supervision. Little boys could sneak sips of beer at some places. You got a small glass with beer at the bottom. Of course today, this is all illegal...
Its essentially just the Netherlands main one, but it happens all around the world around this time of year, Venice, Rio, etc... but wow I wish I recorded during one of the main events (partied instead). The preview at the beginning here was by far the smallest section.
Definately go to carnaval the first day (sunday) of the 3 days long celebration of carnaval, literally EVERYONE is dressed up and you'll fall out of the boat if you aren't wearing a costume!

Maastricht is a great city!
It was mind blowing to arrive during Carnival! I have never seen anything quite like it - even Venice and Rio cannot compare.

OMG and the fisherman!

This was the next day after the end of all the Carnival festivities. The city was basically hung over haha
