"I was praying for a full understanding for the cross and its plan in Christianity. I read and studied and prayed. I saw Christ and the Cross inseparably. The Christ of the Cross became more than a symbol . . it was like seeing John 3:16 (For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.") leave the printed page, take form and act out on the meaning of redemption. While watching this scene with my mind's eye, the theme of the song came to me, and with it the melody." -Rev. George Bennard

I was taken back to a time when my Father-in-Law would play this hymn for me on an old organ he had sitting in the corner of his trailer. Praises be to God!
This is a song played at funerals on my side of the family for many years. George Bennard (who wrote it) died the year I was born (1958) & I must have heard many versions, but the one I want at my funeral is from Al Green its beautiful & soulful & given depth by him but this version I have just heard on here is my next favourite. Beautifully done guys.

This song has special meaning to me as my great uncle Ed Mieras was a friend of the author George Bennard....On December 29, 1912, Reverend George Bennard and his song leader, Reverend Edward E. Mieras, began a series of evangelistic meetings in the Sturgeon Bay Friends Church. These soul stirring meetings continued on until the final night of January 12, 1913. It was on this last night that the hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross,” was first sung in public.

Yes I did! Since it was on another video site, I don't think there was a way to send you a message from there. I shared it on Pinterest and FaceBook too (I think). I meant to go back and find where you first shared the link and thank you, but I got distracted. I think I closed the RUclips tab by mistake that I had left open so I could just go back there directly. I know, bad excuse. I'm sorry. Thank you so much - I loved it! You know what though? I don't know how long ago that recording was made, but you have gotten even better with pitch and pronunciation. I imagine most people wouldn't notice, but I am very "hearing" oriented and music is so important to me. You nailed this one! (oops, no pun intended) I have a passion for the old traditional hymns (so much scriptural truths in them) and you certainly are doing your part to keep them alive. Also, I really really liked hearing your beautiful bass, along with the rest of your parts of course! This one has a great balance of all the harmonies.
