I agree with the last comment. You were denigrating vintage lenses by testing an obscure and no name cheap vintage lens. There are plenty of great vintage Nikkor or Canon lenses to choose from which would give you much better results. I actually regularly use a 1977 vintage Nikkor 55mm f3.5 macro lens for copy stand and film copy work that gives me outstanding results and have several Nikkor AIS lenses that are impressive.

I'm sure those lenses are great. Part of the reason for this video was to test _this lens_ specifically. The fact that it can be had so cheap could be very inviting to people.

I think I have this lens, or at least one similar. It was fun for the $10 I spent on it before dropping that and a couple more zeros on my modern Tamron. But for people just starting out and getting used to diff focal lengths etc, you can't go wrong lol fun video! 🤘

Ive used a 24mm Canon FD mount 2.8 prime. Not as cheap, was 150.
Super cool shots and character for a lens made 10 years before i was born.
I try to vivitar 35 to 210 I think. Tube macro. Not as nice. But plenty ot vibes.

I kinda like the retro vibe of the images, but I prefer crisp images. Which brings me to your Laowa 100mm, what a beast of a lens. I still "need" to pick up a 100mm Laowa macro lens.

Indeed. That laowa is a sharpness monster.

Zoom lens have more glass to go through than a prime Sigma 85mm. My opinion is you not matching lens. The newer lens are molded glass and that been computer program to a spec with much better tolerances. Old glass was ground down by a machine so no two lens will be exactly the same when comparing.
I do use old glass on my Sony cameras mostly Super-Takumar and FD prime lens less glass. I found the old lens are sharp in the center then fall off. I do like the look of some of the old lens. Also, one of those 35mm film shooters. One old zoom lens I bought that was just bad was a SEARS 70 to 210mm F4.0 Macro/one-touch FD mount. The lens was made in KOREA. So that had 9 groups with 13 elements. I have to test my Zoom-Nikkor 35-70mm 3.5 that I just bought. It's on my Nikkormat FT3. I want to see how it does on the A74.

Obv not a great lens. There are few vintage zooms that are remotely acceptable. For vintage primes, they are great if you like "character". I'm a massive vintage lens enthusiast but totally see why one would not want to use any.

Old and big as a Telesorus Rex.. im no paleontologist but that lens needs to go back in the ground.. 😆.. hit and miss with old lenses.. i got a tamron 300 that is nice for filming

Yeah it's not great. It's no wonder I can't find it anywhere lol. Could still be good for filming though. Sharpness doesn't matter as much for video.

Bottom of the bucket lens, try a canon, Minolta, or even nikkor

You should be honest and change the title to "Are Vintage Crappy Lenses Worth Buying?" or can "How vintage lenses that were considered bad at their time, compare to the best lenses today". Or "How 1971 Ford Pinto compare to 2020 Challenger SRT Hellcat" ! Comparing 3th grade zoom lens from 1980 to a 85 prime from same era, would be pointless already. Compare apples to apples. Compare Vintage 85/1.4 with current one or crappy zoom from 80-es to crappy zoom from today!
