In this episode of Holcomb-mania, Periphery's Mark Holcomb teaches the intricate 7-string licks from the Periphery song "Flatline." For tabs, check out: www.guitarworld...
@@clownshoes321 tbh I’m not entirely sure, I generally just base it off of who plays it in their official play through videos. The sliding riff certainly could be some of marks handiwork.
I believe the clean riff in the middle/end of the song is Jake's and pieces of it were taken and expanded on to make the verses and pre choruses, probably by Mark. But who knows
This cracks me up. Mark soenss 3 seconds on a lick that most metal guitarists would spend 3 minutes walking through. Periphery guys are absolute wizards. Awesome song awesome band. I’ll have this down by the time I’m 40 (currently 26)
When I watch these videos, it just makes me realize how ridiculously far off the random people who write the tabs online usually are. One of the main reasons I switched to learning things by ear.
Its the best way, I stopped using tabs years ago, not to sound pretentious, but I feel like 90% of the contributing UG community are actually tone deaf.
Yeah I remember learning one Polyphias solos from Aviator. Learnt it from a tab, then I watched the music video and was like what the fuck I'm playing it wrong. So i went through the music video and did it by ear and where their hands were. It sounded much the same anyway, but much easier than the tab was.
And I bet you felt even more satisfied that you figured it out yourself. I think it really helps mould the song in my brain too, far quicker than tabs.
I've seen errors in guitarworld magazine tabs dude, trust yourself and yourself only. I saw multiple videos of people playing the chords at 2:11 in Whitechapel's A Future Corrupt incorrectly a couple days ago and being one of the most powerful and my most favorite sections of the song it bothered me a lot.
It's not just you. I stopped using tabs because I became frustrated with so many tabs having notes that were obviously completely wrong. And it troubled me that nobody seems to notice.
JunkieMonkey321 mark has said we just all need to write in to prs saying we want a se 7 string sig of his, he said it could happen if there is enough demand (:
Man I thought those Alpha/Omegas sounded like butter through the 6 strings, they really shine on the 7s. gyahhh. anyone know if there are alrdy 7 string versions available? is the six string version even available to purchase yet? lol
Mrak, when is your PRS SE 7 or 8 going to be available? I play 8 strings and want to purchase yours, but the only 8 that you have available is the $11k version, and just can't afford that. Any ETAs would be great!
He said many times that everybody who wants a 7 ou 8 string SE version should send a message to PRS so they can know if there is a great demand for these versions
is it just mark that he plays this song differently from jake . or is it that misha , jake and make plays all there song in there own style and fret? coz looking at jake's playthrough he plays this song totally on different frets!!
Tyler Stewart mrak is mraktacular, he is a whole different level. But kudos to this guy for learning this song so accurately and then sharing the lesson with us.
The part that he's talking about at 6:00 (the riff at 6:26) seems unnecessarily complicated. When you listen to the actual song, none of those extra little notes are even discernible, and even when he's playing it full speed solo guitar, it's not all that audible.
BLCKNR I think they made an attempt. They sound good on a 6 string, and I think they were designed for a 6 string. the first time they were released to the public, they only had a 6 string version unless you went through the custom shop. I think the 7 and 8 models were made just so Mark could have his signature pickups in his guitars. they're still good pickups, I just don't think the original design was optimal for extended range
diazzsama Not really, if anything the ERG sets have a tighter bass response but they shouldn't be too different. Either way it has way more to do with how they setup the tone on this video.
Antigoat l I assure you it's not the guitar, I play the 6 string PRS Holcomb core model in drop G and it's not muddy. It's just that guitar world has never known how to dial in tones that well.
Eian Carlo Arellano is radius something that people really care about that much? I have a regular SE 24 with a 10 inch radius but I've also played the Holcomb with a 20 inch. Both felt great.
Eian Carlo Arellano Once you switch to flat radiuses it's hard to go back. I love my Music Man Majesty 7, and that basically just had a wall for a fretboard.
Daniel Baber Isnt that the reddish/maroon quilted finish? I remember seeing this finish, a brown-ish finish, and then the maroon/red finish all in the quilted top. Hardly see any finishes other than the "whale" burst or whatever this one is called. Loved the more red finish fersure
I've never seen someone feel so inferior about their own guitar playing that they get as angry as you do because Mark, someone far beyond your skill, makes several videos with this channel.
mark is ten thousand times better then me .. yea this does not bother me.. I'm just looking for something different then the same old... holcom has been on a lot and its getting old . that's all. jag
5:54 "One of the trickier parts of this riff is actually the very beginning." - Every Periphery riff ever.
SCARLET IS NOT THAT HARD AS THEY MAKE IT LOOK!!!! I LEARNED IT IN A WEEK (now i dont remember how to play it hahahahaha, relearning in 3,2,1)
Excellent cover, send this to Misha
He's a busy man. He doesn't have time to watch every cover video made by random people on RUclips.
he's better with the Drop C and AGCFAD songs...dont fuck with it xd
I don't get it,but he's Mark Holcomb
nah send it to jake
Why does guitar world hate good sounding tone.
You can always tell when a Mark riff is a Mark riff.
That is normally true but this was written by Jake
jake riff yes
Jake wrote the whole song? I thought he wrote the opening riff and they collabed on the rest but I'm wrong alot in life
@@clownshoes321 tbh I’m not entirely sure, I generally just base it off of who plays it in their official play through videos. The sliding riff certainly could be some of marks handiwork.

mark speaks the language of music so well, things I feel like don't make sense when explained by others, he makes total sense to me.

Fast forward 3 years now trying to learn this song with my PRs holcomb svn. Loving it.
keep uploading the periphery's 7 string lick style i needed so bad
When are the SE Mark Holcomb 7 strings coming out? :) I know you're working on it!!
JunkieMonkey321 mark has said we just all need to write in to prs saying we want a se 7 string sig of his, he said it could happen if there is enough demand (:
It's here now js
I want them to make a usa mark Holcomb model for us so bad(like the one he is playing here)
A FLAT E,B,G flat,..n That's why The Songs is called Flatline..
Playing the second riff with that metronome sounded so odd to me but it fit
"All 4 notes, that's the djent chord"
Hello to mark from the philippines!
hey Mark how much comb do you want ......
holcomb
*badumtss djent djent kwaaaaa
joey BOYER Holcomb if you got 'em.
I'm glad I subbed to this channel.
God damn Guitar World, fix your tone game already
Coreativity wow that tone is pretty shit I get a better tone with my cheap little fender amp lol
X - Doubt
I wish there was a 7 string version of the SE Holcomb model
Wish granted, I just got one and it's amazing.
You had me at Holcomb-mania...
Man I thought those Alpha/Omegas sounded like butter through the 6 strings, they really shine on the 7s. gyahhh. anyone know if there are alrdy 7 string versions available? is the six string version even available to purchase yet? lol
Get BK Juggernauts, Misha's sig pickups. Order direct from factory and you can get them cheaper than ebay because of brexit.
New link: www.guitarworld.com/lessons/navigating-intricate-seven-string-licks-peripherys-flatline
Is anyone else getting a "wavey govanishy" feeling too from Figure 2 ?
en el playtrough de jake, la primera parte del coro la toca sin slides...???

mathrotondano Didn't know that.

Ava official theyre playing different layers of the same part of the song. it's why they have 3 guitarists
Caster090 does not at all explain why they all play it so differently
so the root chords sound like main riff for Pardon Me by Incubus
When Mark has to use his pinky, you know some shit is about to go down.
hey, you have a Signature 7 string and is not available?! this makes me so sad 😭
Did you get one, bud?
Emperor shirt. Hell yes.
Still not as good as the original. Nice try buddy.
Mrak shits all over this dude
Tyler Stewart mrak is mraktacular, he is a whole different level.
But kudos to this guy for learning this song so accurately and then sharing the lesson with us.
I'm crying
But he's Mark Holcomb
Isn't he Mark Holcomb
Damn. Anyone else feel like that tone is a fuzzy mess?
Sounds fat to me. Some folks like their cucumbers pickled.
That's just guitar world check out the original it sounds way more articulate and clear
Yeah he doesn’t sound like this normally
Are there any lead playing demos or lessons from Mark?
The part that he's talking about at 6:00 (the riff at 6:26) seems unnecessarily complicated. When you listen to the actual song, none of those extra little notes are even discernible, and even when he's playing it full speed solo guitar, it's not all that audible.
whatch jakes play through of this part at 6:00 he plays it the way it sounds not the way mark plays it haha, it does seem unnecessary
Spell out the frets like Andy james would be helpful for the beginners
AucklandHard Train your ear so you can improve.
... Read the description...
AucklandHard if you're a beginner you REALLY shouldn't be starting with music by a band who's name sounds like exactly what the do.
PURE RIFFERY
God damnit I want this guitar. I have the 6 string. I want the 7 to match
Pobre Mark se ve acalorado, denle un descanso!
What's the song being played in the intro to the video?
Omega. 11 minutes of aural sex.
Nice spider line 6 rig
What's the intro music song ??
Omega
for the love of god PRS make a 7 string USA limited edition version like you did for the 6 string!
Nice shirt mark...emperor
Those Alpha Omega pickups were not made to handle extended range. They sound great on a 6 string, but anything past that just flops.
It's really not the pickups.
I own the 6 string US core model and play in drop G, doesn't sound muddy at all going through my Archon 50w head.
BLCKNR I think they made an attempt. alpha omega 6 string is technically different pickup than the 7 string version and the 8 string version.

I didnt know Chris Cornell plays for periphery
Intro song anyone?
Omega by Periphery
GIMME DAT 7 STRING PRS
That's the djent chord xd
If Holcomb-mania Is a mental disorder...... than its safe to say i need a psychologist
prs need a little work on those 7th still muddy
Antigoat l That's an issue of pickups, not the guitar. Could be ths mic placement too, and the fact that he isn't running through his typical rig.
Antigoat l I assure you it's not the guitar, I play the 6 string PRS Holcomb core model in drop G and it's not muddy.
It's just that guitar world has never known how to dial in tones that well.
Your words speak miles per hour but your fingers say uhhhh.
dird
Yes sensei
Teach me
TEACH ME THE TONGUE OF FIIIIIIIIIIRE
SO THAT I MIGHT SET THE WORLD... ABLAAAAAAAAAAAAZE
i don t understand the tune of the guitar
Refrak g#d#g#c#f#a#d#
Ok I give up
I'd buy a Holcomb PRS but the fretboard's flatter than a prepubescent woman
But Marks playing on it sounds so "tight"
Eian Carlo Arellano I bought it and love it.
Eian Carlo Arellano I also bought one and love it. Flattest I've ever had, but took almost no time to get used to and now it's super comfortable.
Eian Carlo Arellano is radius something that people really care about that much? I have a regular SE 24 with a 10 inch radius but I've also played the Holcomb with a 20 inch. Both felt great.
Eian Carlo Arellano Once you switch to flat radiuses it's hard to go back.

The Earth is Flat.
Canada isn't real.
PotatoGuitarist I agree, I'm actually going to Australia to see Periphery tomorrow.
PotatoGuitarist Prove to me gravity...YOU CAN'T
You're alive. That's proof of gravity...
Chris Goetchius How?
With a goddamn trogdor shirt on.
Edit: that shit doesnt say trogdor at all.
daaamn, im first?! WTF! HAHAHAAAA
mark is drunk?
good God, Mark's signature guitars would look exponentially better without the purple around the edges.
The purple burst is one of the best things about his sig.
No way. "Brisket Burst", ftw.
"Thumbs up" if you thought this was about no PMO.
damn mark that tone sucks cmon now
This band just tries too hard.
when does this guys contract run out?..gettin sick of mark holcomb.
if only nobody was pointing a gun to your head, forcing you to watch his columns
stratonut Oh if only you could unsubscribe to Guitar World it'd totally fix that problem. Oh wait, there is.
your right! that is why I asked the question about his contract.. done and done. thanks for the help...unsub
I've never seen someone feel so inferior about their own guitar playing that they get as angry as you do because Mark, someone far beyond your skill, makes several videos with this channel.

whats the name of the music of the intro???
Renyer alves Periphery - Omega
