- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- What actually happens when a timing belt breaks? What does a broken timing belt sound like? What is timing belt noise? How much does it cost if a timing belt breaks? These are all timing belt questions I get all the time. Well today we have a 2007 GLI(same as a GTI) FSI that the owner said it had a broken timing belt. We are going to walk through some quick checks you can do to see if your VW has a broken belt, or a broken chain. This engine has both!

Yes yes yes! Finally some more BPY content! I'm so glad you mentioned checking the oil pickup. It's not sufficient to fix the valves w/o finding out WHY it done broke in the first place. Kind of obvious in this case but still -- it's good to be as thorough as you are. Did you know that sometimes more than one thing can be bad? lol. I hope we get to see you do a full valve job since I'm not aware of any valve job videos on all of RUclips covering the BPY let alone ANY VW engine.
Mr. Piston he is oh so helpful. Mr. Valve is like "I can't get up!" And Mr. Piston he says, "Don't worry buddy! I got you!"
Mr Piston realizes the gravity of the decisions he’s made as Mr Valve now lays permanently disfigured. Mr Piston now lives with regret as his screams are muffled from the padded walls of his cell
I am about to say something controversial, I love the way the mk5 gen looks. For sure better then the mk8.
I love these videos because most people would load the parts cannon. Its proper diag at its finest.
Been there just finished on my A3 ended up putting new rings new clutch and many other parts. Lots of time and $ but she’s running 👌🏽
Maintanance is key
Great video and its great that after all of this time you still manage to read and answer viewer comments 🙂
I love you videos, and your very clear english (Non native english speaker here) Keep going, amazing job!!
Thank you!!!
The mechanic on this Chanel is knowledgeable and humble 👍
Thank you 🙏
I have that exact car. 160,000 miles. I’ve done and pod to have so many things fixed. I’ve changed the water pump timing belt and the cam chain tensioner and components. And about 24 more things. I so hope this doesn’t happen to me. But really cool to see a GLi on your channel. I
Reminds me of my old 08 GTI, now I’m in a 17’ Focus ST and it’s amazing how similar the two are
hey you are the best mechanic i know!!!!!! Thank you so much ive learned a lot with your contents! Amazing Work!
My 03 passat 1.8T had a broken chain tensioner, which dropped a bunch of it's pieces into my oil pan, which clogged the oil pickup tube, which starved the engine for oil, which destroyed my turbo.... That was a fun repair.
Not gonna lie, I’m worried about this one
Great video as always Charles 💯🤘 keep them Vdubs on the road 🚗💨
Wow, I have never seen a broken timing chain. Good info.
I had a timing belt break once. Luckily, the engine was freewheeling and there was no damage. I also had a timing gear let go years ago. The only casualty was a bent push rod.
My 2005 Chrysler neon cranked exactly like this when it stalled my to town, weeks ago. Weeks prior, it had rough or rattling idling and unusual misfiring at times.
I'd love to see this particular repair job. Film it if the customer opts for the fix. I had a B5 A4 that had the belt snap but I junked it since it had over 460K miles on it.
I have the same engine in my 2011 audi and I'm being given the choice between having it rebuilt or engine swapped.
I REALLY need to get my timing chain checked on my 1.8TSI 2014 Jetta, Alot of chattering in the timing cover area and ZERO maintenance of the chain at 160k miles😳
PLEASE DO!!!
@@HumbleMechanic I've actually tried calling my local VW dealership numerous times, and it seems the service Dept never answers the phone. I also get a "intake timing out of specification" error, but no check engine light
That’s a red flag! Any local Indy shops that specialize in vw
@@HumbleMechanic not that I'm aware of, live in Jacksonville, NC, so about 6 hours from you. Any recommendations besides going 2 hours or more away?
@@HumbleMechanic my local dealership got bought put by Parkway of Raleigh in January
"Whether it's the belt or the chain, obviously the damage is going to be the same."

Worst one I seen for damage from a timing belt breaking was a Kia Rio.An auction car my dad bought not running.Pulled the head, head was junk with no valves left. This one I put in a replacement engine in
OH man!!! Id love to see that damage. HAHA
It damaged the cylinder head big time.Read on this and this is what happens when the timing breaks in the engine of this car
Probably bend valves had similar job recently
On my Alfa 156 I had almost all valves bent, valve guides damaged, dented pistons etc. Cost me £1500 to sort out. All because Alfa printed the mileage interval incorrectly. They wrote 56,000 miles instead of 39,000 (IIRC) and refused to pay up.
Will a video come for teardown of this engine?? Aswell timing belt replacement and how to do so?
Best regards
Love your work, im learning alot!!
Have a golf mk6r with this engine so want to know :)
My 2005 Audi 2.0T made that exact same sound when the timing chain broke at 230K miles (after breakdown it appears the tensioner failed). Ironically I was going to replace to chain and tensioner on the weekend (this happened on a Tues). Rebuild was not too difficult. Not as much internal damage as I expected.
Hi. My tensioner failed and the chain broke, I am skeptical about pulling the top because I think changing the chain and tensioner will work. What was your experience, did the valves bend? Did you need to pull the top?
@@charlesikechukwu5081 I pulled the head because I was certain valves were bent but all were perfect even though it’s an inference engine. My car is a manual and I instinctively immediately slammed the clutch pedal to the floor. I have no clue if this saved the valves or not. I did replace the head anyway because the cam guides were seriously worn after 250,000 miles; almost the depth of a human hair in some spots. If I were you I would pull the head just for inspection and cleaning (great opportunity to clean carbon buildup). If all is good it will only cost you a head gasket and 10 TTY head bolts. A small cost for peace of mind. Good luck with you project and let us know how it turns out.
Its probably broken the variable valve timing pulley too seen that more than once . Ive also had to drill out that stupid socket head screw in the middle because some idiot previously stuffed it up with the wrong socket bit
this video is true for newer VWs but not non-interference motors plus some older VWs will not need anything other than the timing belt/chain service
Unless you go WAAAAAYYYY back most vw engines are interference. Even the 2point slow which were technically NOT, could still bend valves.
Great info thanks. Here's my situation. 2003 dodge neon with 80,000 mi.. Timing belt snaps while driving. Any chance that engine is O.K.? Is it worth putting a belt on and giving it a go. Or am I looking at a junker now.
I have probably the same failure. Engine in my Saab was just rebuild and after 100km, engine just stopped working. There is no compression on any cylinder, there is the same sound when cranking. Probably valves have been bent. Is it common that pistons or cylinders are also damaged? I hope only cylinder head needs to be fixed and timing chain.
WHY... did you crank the engine when you suspected a broken timing belt / chain? Wouldn't it have been better to turn the engine by hand? If the valves were hitting- you'd know- you'd be stopped cold. I would think cranking with the starter can only worsen the damage / break something else. You could do a further confirmation by either removing the timing belt cover or even a leak down.
Anyway- I like your channel - I know you' know what you're doing but I can't agree with the process on this one.
Hi! I bought a 2012 Touareg that sadly got its register-chain out of order. The mechanics at VW says the engine is not broken, but it needs a new "tightener". Of course this costs me a fortune😩, but how can they be so sure? I'm afraid a total overhaul is the next thing they will suggest.
Have any advice/opinions?
Loved your vhannel for years, and know you're an expert on these machines! It's a 3.0 TDI V6 with 189000 km...
This makes me miss my MK5 GTI
I feel you man.
Wow! Sadly, the repair costs more than the car :(
What the... Picked up mkv GTI with 77k. Plan on taking care of timing belt. Did not know it had a chain also hmmmmm
Im having problem with my AXX , my 091 block is spec at 24.0kW and act. At 27.5kW . Have no idea what to do , everything is new fitted 2 months ago and had no problems. 2 days ago this shows up , car runs good , start good , idle good, drives good untill harder gas . Then jumps out error. Only thing i didnt change are 3 rings in cam cover. And I have 1 wire out which goes to n205. Would that cause error ? And would error be always active . Because mine can be deleted
Hi, I have a 2007 VW GTI. I changed the timing belt at 120k but am wondering about the chain???
Thank god my Vanagon doesn't have either! Knock on 🪵
Who would I look for to try to do a head job with messed up valves due to timing belt breaking? Just a regular mechanic? My mechanic who replaced my timing belt when it broke while I was driving said the head needs to be taken to a machine shop to fix because of a valves hitting each other issue. Could I just get a 2nd inspection from another mechanic just to verify?
the head to a machine shop is pretty common. Some shops will slap valves in-house. As long as its done right, its fine. I preferred to send head to machine shop so they can bench test it. The higher the miles, the more likely id send to the machine shop
IS this the same engine as 2007 Audi 2.0T?
5:21 "but i change as recommended: every 10.000 miles"
For all you people thinking it is enough: yes, for a mere 100.000 miles, then scrapyard. If you want to drive the car to the moon and back, consider 5000 miles (or 1 year, when driving less than that) oil change span
1:30 gotta have all portions for a good time
Why crank it if you think it is broken? Why not just inspect the belt or chain?
How much fluid does a 2000 Jetta vr6 automatic transmission take?
I have a 2020 Jetta R line, how often should a Timing Belt be changed?
Hello Charles, which is the mileage of this engine ? Thank you !
Great B roll
Thank you
Hans and Franz are going to make a boat payment when you break a cambelt on a GLI/GTI. That's going to be very expensive. I had a cambelt break on an 8V 1.8l GTi and got away with it.
This is what killed my 2001 1.8T Mk4. Broke at 80mph on the interstate. Engine never ran again, and spun with open valves when you tried to start it. Don't ever try and start an engine with a known broken timing belt - you destroyed the valves if they weren't destroyed initially by doing that.
@HumbleMechanic how often does a steel timing chain break if your on top of your oil changes, like if the manufacture says 5-6 months and or 7000miles? I'm in Canada and despite what my dealership says 5 months or 8000KM albit this is a GDI turbo engine and set my onboard service interval to 4 months or 4000KM and that's using Amsoil full synthetic oil.. sometimes I use 5w30 Sig series and when money is tight I use the same but it's the OEM branded also using a catch can. I drive a semi and to me so what I change the oil in it every 12000 miles vs the 20-22k others do because to me oil is cheap compared to a new engine ;)
Would recommend buying 2007 beetle with 2.5 engine??
I like the engine. Many beetles are really poorly maintained
@@HumbleMechanic so here's the deal I currently own a 2005 pt cruiser convo i,m taking a 1000 mile trip to Chicago that's why I'm considering selling it and buy the 2007 beetle convertible for my trip.would that make sense?
Broken timing chains, welcome in even more profit because of cheaper parts era.
Back in the days when you had a chain, you where practically without the slightest hint of worry.
That's true today except for this design. The worst of all worlds. maybe next time they can incorporate a gear drive too so every possible failure point will be covered! : l
I did not even know that I had a timing chain in my 07 GLI. I just changed my timing belt. Do I have to also do a timing chain job? If so, when?
There is no interval. They typically make noise

Why don't people get oil changes? 🤦♀️
So on vw vehicles the 2.0 engines have a timing belt and 2.5 a timing chain is that accurate??? looking at a 2007 beetle convertible
I was told but you did not confirm it that when a VW breaks a timing belt the valves can hit the pistons so hard that it can bend the connecting rods. That would ruin a mechanics day i think after all that work to replace the cylinder head.Your comment
I’ve never seen it. The valves give because they are the weak point. Seen a piston chipped a couple of times.
That said I wouldn’t be surprised if it did happen
I have the same exact engine that I am doing a full rebuild on. Customer had someone install a cheaper eBay turbo and it slung a bunch of metal throughout the engine. I have everything apart I am just wondering a good source to buy replacement bottom end and head parts.
Maybe Ebay? Maybe junk yard. I don't have a super good source. There is actually more metal in this engine that I was hoping for. Its going to be a minute before I can get a full teardown. But Im hoping we can save it
As I have found, it has proven difficult to find good replacement connecting rods, bearings, timing accessories for this engine in general.
@@iaproductions6599 Yep that is common across the VW board. Unless yo want to spend $$%$$$$$$$$$$
Fcpeuro.com has everything I've needed so far except pistons. Might be worth checking with them
If someone brings you a car and says they think the timing belt has snapped, why would you try and start it....?
Because you you almost never get that concern. And if you do, you can be 100% sure that someone tried to start it already.
Most of the time you get a car like this and the battery is dead from cranking it

First there is no reason to make overhead cam engine interference engine. Or as a matter any engine today. Interference engine has destroyed more engine than all the other problems combined.
I got that cover for much less than 900$
Thats not a "2000 Jetta" its newer
Why can’t these videos be hours long 😳
I worry about this on my 11 Jetta 2.5. 164000 miles.
The only thing on the 2.5 was upper chain wear. That’s a chain only engine.

Fortunately on my brothers old Volkswagen Jetta, even if the timing belt is screwed, the valves can NOT end up being damaged on that specific engine. In his case the timing belt had slipped due it partially falling apart to the point in which the engine would not run. Anyhow, on the coldest day in years, we still managed to fix the problem via installing a new belt, and set everything to being positioned as it should be, based upon dot position markers, etc. Of course as we tensioned the belt, this knocked off the proper dot positioning a bit, so we offset the position an equal amount in the opposite direction such that once the belt tension was set, everything was at as it was supposed to be. I guess someone else did not take this into account in the past, because we now had a ton more power than ever before.
Ah man, talk about PTSD. This happened to my 01 audi TT with a 1.8L back in November. New cylinder head, new head gasket, fresh pcv system, all that. Was about 600 for parts and took my buddies and I about 12 hours to finish.

Always ready for a new Humble Mechanic video!
Oof yeah after doing the forged build on the mk5 GTI I had which previously suffered from balance shaft failure, I decided to part ways with it. Mostly because of the dual timing (belt & chain) combo + oil pump/balance shaft setup, overall just too many points of failure in the timing system for my liking.
4000 dollar I'll buy a used Honda or camry or any other brand it is just a ripoff
You could for sure get something else for $4k.
I have a 1992 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 (my very first car) and 3 months, 192 miles the timing belt shredded itself causing the pistons to smash into the valves. This ruined my entire engine (it even flattened the connecting rod bearings).
And here is the kicker. This was back in 1992. Yes my brand new car needed a full engine replacement. But please don't let my story scare you guys. Turns out the timing tensioner let go of the belt because it was defective from the factory. All it cost me was a month in the dealership. 30 years later and I still own this car. But now the engine was built into 678 awhp monster with a Gates Kevlar blue racing timing belt lol.
All I can tell everyone here is if your car has an interference engine, (Especially if it has a timing belt, because belts are the weakest method to keep the cams in correct timing with the crankshaft. Timing chains are a little more durable, and lastly timing gears are the strongest and best). Anyway always always do the 60k timing belt service (or whenever your car service manual calls for the timing components to be replaced) on time and never use aftermarket parts when it comes to the timing belt tensioners and idler pullies because if that cheap idler bearing that you saved $20 by buying it on eBay gets binded up and seizes the timing belt will overheat as well break most of its teeth off before you will be able to hear it failing, next thing you know that cheap eBay part is responsible for blowing up your entire engine, and costing you tens of thousands depending on what kind of car you drive. So please don't ever forget about that little belt that's buried deep inside your engine as it's probably the second most important Parr of an engine, the first being oil lol.
