I can't agree more ! he more than paid his dues. and later in his career he finally became the cup winner we all wanted for him. 80's-90's hockey was amazing. Tough for him being behind Gretz and Mario. He just kept being the most complete consistent hockey player for his whole career.

I grew up in the Detroit Area.... I got to watch one of the best to ever do it! I get chills when I watch Docs like these! It did matter how hard he got hit, it didn't matter if the Red Wings were down 4-5 goals, there was absolutely NO QUIT in him. His teammates talk about him after the 2001-02 season when they won the cup. Said he couldn't walk without whincing in pain, but once his skates were laced up the heart of a warrior came to play. We got to watch 2 versions of Yzerman. The 1st version was the one everyone referred to as SILK because he was smooth and fluent in offensive game... The 2nd version was when he transformed into one of if not the best 2-way player in NHL History, that version earned him the name
"THE CAPTAIN!" He will forever be The Captain and A Legend amongst legends!

Good on you for getting emotional. I love the wings and wanted them to get back to the top as much as anyone not named howe or yzerman but good on you brother for admitting how much the whole thing meant. Maybe more of a Canadian fan than the wings?

I loved the captain. I was a kid and 19 was at a car dealership signing. We waited in the bitter cold. After a few hours the guy in charge said it’s over. Steve stayed not sure how many more hours. I still have my poster signed. He couldn’t have been over 22. At that point the wings were called the dead wings.

I have had a huge Man crush on Steve Yzerman since about 1985. I believe had Yzerman not had that knee injury he would be up there with Howe as a goal scorer. You can clearly see how it changed his game to a more defensive minded center.

  • @Migmaw

Great video I'm surprised there weren't more clips of players speaking on Stevie Wonder, for example there are great clips of Gretzky explaining why he always chose Stevie for team Canada and what he thought of his play, Bob Probert when he went the his hard times saying Stevie never said a bad thing about him and always had his back. Brett Hull and Robotaille talking about being down two games to Vancouver but Yzerman calming them down saying they would win the series and how they couldn't help but give their all because of Stevie's efforts playing with knees that didn't bend and the pain he played through and still lead the team. Federov talking about Stevie, Toews and Sakic on why they wore 19 how Stevie gave back contract money to bring Sergei back or bring Hull in how Stevie made it clear even to someone as great as Hull egos got left at the door. I mention these things so others will look deeper into Stevie's career and his sacrifice the Wings and Detroit

  • @rudewalrus5636
    @rudewalrus5636 2 months ago +16

My only complaint is that the video didn't show Stevie Y's defense. One of the things that made Yzerman great, and beloved by teammates, coaches, and fans, was that he was totally committed and selfless in playing defense. The video talks about him being a "two-way" center, I wish it had included some footage of e.g. Stevie sacrificing his body to block a shot, or something. Still, love to see the recognition for "The Captain!"

here in Detroit he is beloved. definitely a hockey player's hockey player. once during the Stanley Cup finals I saw him in Birmingham limping so badly he had a tuff time getting in his vehicle. that night he played like he was in perfect health. what a great team. no salary cap, we had such depth at every position. half the team was Hall of Famers but Stevie Y was the straw that stirred the drink. remember watching Mickey Redmond calling the game using old school terms like 'katie bar the door". it was the best of times until some pot smoking chaffeur ran the limo into a tree on woodward ave. I was working at the nearest hospital and word spread like wildfire that Konstantinov was badly hurt. I loved that guy. never saw such a master of the hip check before or since. rolling 3 lines, sometimes 4. of all the alltime top scorers Stevie was very balanced between assists and goals. anyone remember when they let the boys play? now it's just a bunch of figure skaters.

Years ago, I was working out at a gym with my cousin. We were on the bench press, I was a fairly strong young man and I had a lot of weight on the bar. I did my reps and then we took some weight off so my cousin could get his reps in. After he got done, a guy working out a few presses away, came up and asked if I would spot him. I said sure, so I walk over to the bench and he started his reps. I really didn’t have to help him, he was fairly strong. Then I realized who he was, is was Steve Yzerman! He finished up his reps and thanked me….. I’ll tell you, he was the nicest professional hockey player that I ever met. I became an instant fan. At the gym, he was just one of the guys. He wasn’t loud or walked around like a peacock, like some professional athletes do. Just a good guy.

I know during the Wings dynasty of the 1950s when you mentioned "The Captain" everyone thought of Ted Lindsay. And rightfully so. Terrible Ted was the guy who led the Wings to four cups in six years. But when anyone from my generation hears "The Captain" we immediately think of Stevie Y, the man who wore the C for 19 years, longer than any player in North American sports history, not just the NHL.
I remember when Stevie was drafted in 83. Everyone in the city was hoping the Wings would land local phenom Pat LaFontaine. Instead we got this young kid who looked even younger than he was and had a last name my friends and I couldn't pronounce at first. We were disappointed but the "Dead Wings" had sucked for so long we were sort of like; "Guess that's just the way luck goes with this bunch." Stevie straightened us out in a hurry. Right away you could tell this kid was a gamer. He was lighting it up but the team wasn't winning enough, especially not in the post-season. Then Scotty Bowman showed up and told Stevie you can win scoring titles or you can win cups but you can't win both so pick one. Stevie's response? The Captain became a contender for the Selke trophy every season after that, finally winning it in 1999 and of course in 97 he skated that Cup, bringing the house down at the old Joe. I recall reading an interview where Brendan Shanahan said Stevie would shame you into playing hard. No matter how beat up or worn out you felt, when you watched what Stevie had to go through just to get on the ice there was no way you were going to give less than 100% every shift.
Right now the Wings team he has been building as GM the past seven years is finally starting to turn the corner. When he returned to Detroit after building a Cup winner in Tampa everyone thought: "This is it, The Captain is home." All was right with the world. But success didn't come right away and he stuck with LaLonde as coach longer than he should have. But he knows from all those year toiling as the one star it takes a while to build a busted team back up, and the Wings were hard broke when he got the GM job. A lot of fans were pissed at him, not so much anymore though. The Wings have the right coach and the right attitude and I see another Cup in The Captain's future. Hope I'm still around to watch this team skate it.
Anyway, thanks for covering one of the greatest players a lot of people outside of Detroit know much about. Steve is a quiet guy. Just like Barry, just like Al, just like Tram. They let their play do the talking and as the old adage goes: "Tape doesn't lie."

I always said Steve Yzerman is, pound for pound, the best hockey player I’ve ever seen, but then what do I know.

  • @twatttheworldaccordingtoto4339

Mario Lemieux led the league in scoring in 1989. Then Gretzky, then Yzerman.

Nice video but was really hoping to see other NHL players talking about him and really it was Jags and then a few coaches. That is what you titled it....

Yzerman was the third best center when Gretzky and Lemieux were number one and two at Center.
As a wings fan, I’ll never forget the 2001-2002 season when that team had Fedorov, Chelios, Hull, Lidstrom, and Hasek, but Yzerman was the captain that could keep all those guys in line and working as a team.

Stevie Y is Detroit and will always be known as “The Captain”. Ohio State can have their “the”. I’ll take ours.

He also spent the second half of his career as a more defensive style player for Bowman or his stats would have even been greater.

You forgot to say that Stevie changed his game for the good of the team. Played more defense and shared the puck more. He could’ve had four hundred more points.

True story: June 2026 I was working an event at the University of Michigan. I was told by coworkers that "The Captain" would be in attendance. Imagine being disappointed that "The Captain" they were talking about was Derek Jeter.
Stevie Y. Is my "Captain" Quite possibly the best captain in NHL history.

Played in the shadow of wayne and Mario in points for yrs, that to the average hockey fan didn't appreciate Stevie Y greatness.

I love how it said he lead the league in scoring in 89’ , yeah he had 155 points but that was only 3rd best behind Lemieux’s 199 and Gretzky’s 168. Fact check bro.

He never won a Hart trophy. He never won an Art Ross. He played in the Gretzky/Lemieux era. He did win three Cups and he earned the admiration of all players and all fans through the world of hockey. He ranks above the stars; above the super stars: he was one of very few elites.

@Kraghack259can’t get the name right when they use a TTS program. Lots of names get butchered by AI voices and the creators don’t care because it’s easier to make 5 AI videos than one with a script you have to read
