  • Raja Maha Viharaya (Cave Temple) in Dambulla Sri Lanka is a UNESCO world heritage site and is referred to as the Golden Temple. Considered to be the best-maintained and largest cave temple compound, this is situated in the central of Sri Lanka and is 148km from Colombo, and 72km away from Kandy. Build on a rock it stands at 160m and soars over the encompassing grassland. There are 80 known caves found in the area and the most popular attraction of these is spread across five magnificent caves comprising beautiful paintings and splendid statues. These frescos depict Lord Buddha’s life and altogether you will see 153 similar statues. There are also intricately carved statues of Sri Lankan Kings and God Vishnu and Goddess Ganesha symbolizing Hindu deity. The sculptures extend across 23,000 sq. feet and feature portraits on the cave walls.
