Allen went to MI in the 80s on the Larry Carlton scholarship and here he is playing with his son Travis . He’s always a treat to listen to , great player and lovely human being !
Dude. For anyone in the L.A. area, get out to the Baked Potato some time to see these cats play (Allen Hinds' group). It's moving and astonishing. Allen often has the incomparable Maxayn Lewis up to sing a few tunes, which is a bit like having God breathe the light of the cosmos straight into your ears. (Watch the "Ode to Billy Joe" video that's probably on the "Up next" sidebar right now.) We do that nighttime round trip drive from San Diego every time we can just to see them.
I went to watch them at the Baked Potato yesterday. The musicianship? Second to none. And the raw energy and fun they have on stage is so contagious. Definitely one of my favorite performances.
Holy Moly... fell on to this after watching the Andertons UK interview with Allen. Such great playing. Not "ooh, look at me" but instead just "play for the song/groove". Reminds me, sadly, of Allan Murphy, who died in the 80's but had that same kind of thing in his playing - what note is best, not what note makes me look best.
That's how I ended up here as well. Loved the interview on Anderton's and started seeking Allen out. Gawd; what a player he is. Almost a cross between Robben Ford and Josh Smith.
Yes! It's remarkable so many people remember Murphy - as do I. I haven't done a lot of searching, but besides Go West, do you about other stuff I should check out? Tia :-)
Love A Murphy! He assimilated elements of the incomparable Allan Holdsworth and created an accessible fusion hybrid sound that was uniquely his own. He was of course in Level 42 for a while - and Allan actually filled in on a tour after his untimely passing - but if you want to hear him in full fusion banshee mode check out the SFX album originally released on the Naim label! It’s crazy, three stellar guitarists all called Alan (sort of)! If you like that style check out Brett Garsed too. And if you can find it, I strongly recommend Ronnie Johnson’s amazing playing on How the Land Lies by First Light. Finally talking about unsung British fusion monsters, you must listen to Jazz Metal by Shaun Baxter and Guitar Stories by Keith Moore! Peace.
I love how he repeats notes inside his lines. i've been doing it a lot and havent been able to figure out who was the inspiration or that technique/Economy picking. good to know. allen is killin, whole band is killin.
In the Anderton's video he talks about being influenced by Holdsworth's tone and the legato phrasing. He complains that his right hand technique isn't up to the "pick every note" style. That's okay. It sounds for fluid and melodic the way he does it. Which seems to be his priority. Thank goodness. We have enough amazing technicians already.
Tengo una duda existencial... Yo tengo un disco de Steps Ahead (Live in Tokio), donde está ésta canción (Self Portrait), pero dice que el compositor es Mike Mainieri. A quién le pertenece entonces? Saludos.
How could 7 people give a thumbs down to this video? The music is beautiful, the musicians are top notch, world class and the live performance is great. What has happened to people appreciating good music and good taste and style. Keep going Allen Hinds and keep going great musicianship. jamiepalumbo.com
Jamie Palumbo this is a musician's band if you catch my drift,,,, a lot of regular people they just don't get it,,, they don't notice the sleight fills, a small flutter Bass Run,, a perfect hi hat Sizzle snap,,,,this is a good band👍👍🎸🎸🎶 Ohio,,p.s you have one of the best keyboardist around Sterling Smith,, originally from Columbus Ohio I think he's living in Southern California,,,well have a nice New Year!👍🇺🇸
Really great version of a beautiful song by Mike Mainieri- if you haven't heard the original, do yourselves a favour and check out the stellar version by Steps Ahead ruclips.net/video/ZG1PxCy2Zlk/видео.html
Not edited, not quantized , not pre recorded.... Live music.... Human music. Just the way it’s supposed to be.
"Human music... Hmm I like it!"
the keyboard intro is one of the finest improvs i have ever listened to.. and i am 62 yrs old, and have listened to them all..
Have you ever heard Richard Henderson of Peoria improv?
So true
Yes, it even has a Keith Jarrett vibe to it.
That's Matt Rohde, one of the very best out there ❤️🎹
Go to any churches? You’ll hear music like this all the time

He's definitely amazing.
Allen is one of my favourite guitarist, so many facets to his playing ,incredible legato but so soulful
love players with dynamics. Seems like every guitar player i see/hear these days his plucking every note as hard as they can.
Magical!! Allen’s tone, his melodic approach, the changes, the solos, mind blowing.
Travis is such a magnificent player. What a melodic sense.

I know Murphy played on at least one kate Bush album, and I'n pretty sure there was some kind of Fusion band that he was in as well.

I think Alan Murphy played the solo on the song Silent Running by Mike and the Mechanics. Great solo and song
This is filled with good will, warmth, friendship and all the good things in life...and brilliant playing. Thank you guys, take care.
Travis Carlton, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!
it always make me cry thank you allen
Stellar! There's no other word to describe the musicianship.
Just beautiful music skillfully played with passion.
Steps Ahead Modern Times!!!! That LP absolutely killed me back in the day.... Brecker!!!! Killer tune... Great version guys!!
Exquisite "Liquid Music", from "Fused-Oto-GrandMaster" Allen Hinds et. al (!!)
This song messed me up today... such an experience!!!
we have checked this band out 5 or6 times this year. baked potatoe style excellent every time thanks'''
Thumb up for the keys player, the bass player, and the drums player. Just very tasty playing. Oh, and Allen as well :D
I love how he repeats notes inside his lines. i've been doing it a lot and havent been able to figure out who was the inspiration or that technique/Economy picking. good to know. allen is killin, whole band is killin.
I think economy picking was kind of pushed early on by Frank Gambale

Its like the ocean. Sweet waves of Eemocean.
Stellar musicianship....
This could make grown man cry......
This song is one of my all time favourites. But don't forget to listen to the original. This was a milestone record.
Nikolaus Brocke which one is the original pls.?
Wow just “awesome” 👏🏼
Beautiful music moment! What a GIG!!
Super !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tengo una duda existencial... Yo tengo un disco de Steps Ahead (Live in Tokio), donde está ésta canción (Self Portrait), pero dice que el compositor es Mike Mainieri. A quién le pertenece entonces? Saludos.
I love the dynamics of this tune.
Beautiful !!!
80000回再生の内、俺が300回は観てる。最高なんですこの動画。
Bellissimo!
some of it reminds me of Ronnie Johnsons First Light ..( " how the land lies" album 1985) genre.. another relative of A Holdsworth and P. Metheny..
L'introduction piano est magnifique
I love "aged" Xotic instruments.
allen's tone in this video is insane.
Magnificent.
Just amazing,so Inspirational.
진짜 살살 녹는다 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Wonderfull.
This is so melodic o my god
Very nice!
Who wrote this piece? Beautiful.
Mike Mainieri. The original version was on an Album by the group "Steps Ahead," called "Modern Times" which was released in 1984.
awesome
♥♥♥♥♥
Great music. I didn't see a credit to the composer, Mike Mainieri, though.
Anyone know if he's playing in stereo or wet/dry? Cheers
vubear yes he does use a wet dry set up, search for his Andertons interview and he explains what he uses right at the end of interview.
Sweet.

This is a Mike Stern cover
jakemf1 Steps Ahead written by Mike-Mainieri
0:37 Oof!!
What happened to dynamics?
he is cold I think !
0:01
He has an unnatural picking technique.
Travis rock bottom Carlton yhaw
it sounds like he's going through a DUMBLE ?...
There is this slightly changing tone. Think he uses a Univibe at very slow speed.
Awesome. The irony being that Allen Hinds is probably the worst musician on that stage!!
