I also turned 40 last year and it bothered me. Our generation is at a point when most stating to have health issues and most of them are overweight and the general saying is that you cannot expect much after 40 athletically. I was aimless before 40 regarding running, I was doing it for 18 years and had no goals. But decided to turn the page, got a coach and started to train hard and now I'm feeling better than ever, I am running more than ever and faster then ever. What you have achieved is amazing and really looking forward what is 2024 in store for both of us.
Well done Ben, that is a fantastic achievement for all that you have been through both physically & mentally over the past few years & thanks for sharing it with us. I'm 56 & 2 year ago I ran a 2.56hr marathon at Manchester which I was delighted with. You just never know what is round the corner & at the beginning of last year I was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer. I'm still receiving treatment but the tumor has been removed as well as part of my bowel, I've had plastic surgery & a Stoma bag fitted. Although I haven't been given the all clear I'm feeling much better & stronger each day. My goal for this year is to get back to what I love best & that's running. Marathons are out of the question but just to be able to do a Parkrun would be a dream come true for me. We all have problems in our lives at some point but I really think that our runners mindset helps us come out the other side as a stronger person. Followed you for years Ben & find you a true inspiration..... keep up the great work & never give up 💪💪
I love that you do big races as long training runs! As long as you can be disciplined, as you were, not to lured into full-on racing, it’s great fun. For your viewers too, indeed!
It's a lovely contrast to see a video that isn't about a specific event, or technique or product, but about a bigger picture, and a longer story. I didn't run my first marathon until I was 42. I'll be 58 when I run my next one, which will be my seventeenth overall and my first London, this April. My goal is to enjoy myself and savour it and take it all in. I take satisfaction not so much from PBs now, but from following the kind of joined-up training described here, so that I avoid injury and have race days that are as free from discomfort and anxiety as possible. I hope you're still documenting your running for many years to come.
Thanks for this great video, you are inspiring, I have felt in love with running late in my life at 37… and this year I’m turning 42 😅 and one of my goals isnto run my first marathon 🤞🏼 Wishing that everything will align to realize that!
Weird as it sounds I’ve always thought of you as someone my own age based off how insane your times are! Glad to see you’re doing well, take care Ben! I would be glad to be running that pace in 18 years if life doesn’t get in the way!
Great insights Ben, might be able to use some of that advice…. It’s great when we find old form returning. I had a good 2023 I’d written myself off as a plodder - did the RTTS and hurt lots, but had trained really hard and loved training again. Soon after I really needed a motivation boost so joined a running club again, 15 years after last running with a club. It’s been amazing! 5k time back down to 21ish min, hopefully get my 10k back to low/mid 40’s. So I’d add join a club(!) to my best advice to anyone wanting to improve 👍👍
Really glad to hear that age is not stopping you from still achieving amazing things! It’s really uplifting! I hope you will run a sub 2:25 someday (no pressure though). As for me, I will be over the moon just to BQ and break 3. On the other hand, that hat looks really good!
Hey Ben, I love your perspective, that you share it and you’re so transparent. As a viewer, beating your PR means nothing to me. Just keep the entertaining and real content coming. Great channel to follow!
Kundos to you for this excellent video! Really well structured and informative. So much helpful information in those 18 minutes! I recently turned 40 myself and I've been using your plan for berlin last year and finally got my sub 4 (after getting close 15 years ago.) Now I train for Hamburg Marathon in the end of April and feel very motivated hoping to get another PR. Thanks for all the work you put in those videos and really happy for you to see taking down those issues that kept holding you back in running and also in life imagine. But no matter how the races will go in the future I hope you can finish all races and Training Runs with a smile on your face, because that's why we do it after all,,! 🎉🍀
My new race kit addition will be Immodium (thanks for the tip Ben!), after I finally was forced to take a bathroom break in a race for the first time ever...which cost me a BQ, but since they made the Boston 2024 cutoff 5:29mins 1 week before my race I was pretty confident a bib wasn't in the card...add in a post tropical storm, and nail was in the coffin. Keep stacking those blocks Ben!
Got your training plan and I can say it really works. I planned to 3:10 @ Houston Marathon and this past weekend I ran 3:08:26. Couldn't believe it! Thank you and keep up great work you do over here!
I am also 40 yo and started running in Spring 2023 after years of lifting weights only and a bit overweight. I’ve been running pretty much since and aim to get close to or even sub 1:30 HM during 2024. You inspire me, thanks.
@skipp8936 you got it! I just had this same goal. Previous PB was 53 min and I got a 45 min 45 sec. Smashed it. Basically ran higher mileage with 1 speedwork. Amd like Ben said running with headphones helped
Well done Ben, some great tips in the video as usual. Your honesty and passion for running shines through. Your ups and downs over the last few years have been emotional and i feel we have been on a journey with you. Kudus to you. Im running my 1st London marathon this year using your plan, im 49 and aimming for 2.45. Hopefully it going well and to plan. 👍
Love this video. I've turned 40 recently too and I've found myself in a real rocky injury prone patch for the last 18 months which I think I'm on the other side of now. So encouraging to hear have you boiled it back down to the basics more or less. I really appreciate your honesty in these types videos. Keep it up😃
It's so good to see you back on form, Ben! Currently following my fourth training plan of yours in prep for Manchester marathon :) 👊 your training plans are rock solid and have got me a PB every time
Just discovered your channel and started binge watching. Love your positivity. I started taking the same mindset on my runs. Running my first half marathon this fall. Will definitely pick up your training program!
Great recap video, Ben. Thanks for your insights. Another 40+ runner here, trying to get myself back into marathon shape. I appreciate that you touched on all phases of training, including nutrition and sleep. Best of luck in your 2024 running, whatever you have on the calendar. Get it done!!
A great detailed explanation of your journey to Valencia. Inspiring. Enjoyed the explanation of the mental challenge and your approach to that. I’m hoping to run at least one marathon this year and to train to run my best yet. Here’s to 2024!
Congratulations, Ben. Your journey definitely was very inspiring to me. I've just returned to training after my metatarsal stress fracture. HR was off the chart when i ran slight faster than my marathon pace.all joints in my legs were aching when i ran for a 20-min. that said, i told myself i will become stronger if I train consistently.

Happy for your results. I remember I saw you in the Valencia Turia park 2022, before the race, I was so amazed to see you in person. Valencia is a beautiful city, and its so easy to find people. (One I saw Beyonce :D ) . Also, was out cheering and saw Kiptun the winner was a shocker with his 2:01 time. I wish you many more years in running.
Thank you, Ben! Thank you for all the videos you do. They help me immensely on my journey into running. All the product reviews, all your shared experiences, it helps me find my own running environment. I am grateful you are doing what you do and sharing it with excitement! Thank you!
Love this, and brilliant positive mindset about getting faster. I'm 45 and did, 10k, half marathon, and marathon PBs last year, having been running for 10 years (and hope to beat them in the future) lots of people write themselves off in their 40's.
Hey, Ben. I am really happy for you and I am glad you got around those issues you had these last few years. You are a very positive person and you manage to influence others in an uplifting manner. Thanks for all the content you put out and your products are great. Keep on getting it done!
Lovely, Ben, congratulations! 🎉 I was there as well, great city. I unfortunately missed my goal of running under 4 hours due to a cramp, after I already didn’t cross it in Amsterdam (04H 00M 35S😅). I’m trying to up my own mileage for the next one - currently at 80 km 50 mi/week.
Nice video Ben, love your honesty and even though it's nobody's business I appreciate that you feel you can speak openly. Keep you amazing content coming and really looking forward to the year ahead, thanks Ben and Sarah❤
Hi Ben, another great video by you & Sarah👍🏻 I’m 50 in a few weeks, took up running 1 year ago and still loving it, always improving. First marathon in May(Edinburgh) can’t wait, hoping for sub 3.30💪 2.25 for you again - no problem Gerry Cinnamon - Brilliant!! Take care 🤜
Good luck this year Ben and Sarah, I will be following the story and watching how it unfolds. I personally think I love running more now after finding your RUclips. I appreciate lacing up and heading out the door now whatever the weather so thank you ☺️
I made the video. I could see my marathon plan review. I agree with you 100% on cooking and I’m hopeless at it but it is one of my targets for the year to cook better than boring bland dishes. I struggle when I put pressure on myself in races. When I’m relaxed and do my own thing I’m so much better even if I still going for my time. I find I put less stress on the body and roll into races than flat out from start
In my mid 40’s ran a full year of running as of Jan of this year . Now going for my 4th marathon this spring in Boston hope to get faster in the near future … let’s hope Chicago will be my break out race at 2:47🤞🏿 ur an inspiration thank you sir 🖤🏁
Great video Ben, my goal this year is the same as every year since London 2001, break 3 hours, maybe at 60 it’s too late but still going to have a go, always enjoy my races though.👍
9:17 Gousto (or similar) is great too. Plenty of healthier options and then you don’t have to plan your shopping, which is what I hate. It’s been great to keep cooking healthy dinners and reduces food waste too! It provides plenty of variety so you don’t get stuck in a rut.
Great tips Ben! As a 40+, you are giving me hope to improve ahhaha! As for the gym, I've settled on a couple of dumbbells and kettlebells...and doing my sessions in the basement between the washer and dryer... Super glamour, I know ;)
Excellent video Ben! I recognise it's a bit different but I'd love to see a video on the best recipes you've tried from your new recipes or your favourite running friendly meals! I always struggle for inspiration for new healthy meals that are good for runners. Thanks again for all the great content!
Love it, Ben. So excited to see how you go in 2024! Your videos give me so much energy to go out and get it done. I also joined the 39+1 club in 2023, and hoping to finally run a half marathon in May after years of injury. I'll be starting your L2 training plan (but aiming for a 95 minute goal) in about 2 weeks. If I have a question or two in regards to the plan before I get started, can I email you? Or is it best to ask here/Strava/elsewhere?
Looks like we have same injury, my ankle was completely twisted hill up front 180, doctor said my joint disappeared was smashed for hundreds of pieces. I hope you're fully recovered, but that joint never gone be like before, is weaker. I hope you will finnish tmb one day, and I'm happy to find your channel!
Heh Ben Glad to see you up and at it and keeping the chin up as ive told you, your the man. Got my first marathon in april so training at the mo using your plan. Keep up the great work Ben 👍
Starting week 14 of marathon trainiing for Barcelona and my goodness fitness is amazing on my first attempt , yesterday I had a double threshold long run Sunday , and felt super strong , sub 3 on the cards and even better , 7 weeks out next Sunday I'm attempting a half aiming for sub 1"23 or so let's goo❤🎉
I ran Palma Marathon back in October and ran it for fun not for time and it was the best race I've ever done! No pressure or anything and smiled the whole way around! I just loved the no pressure side of it, most races I put huge pressure on myself to get a PB etc but this race was different and I did all the training and it went to plan etc and that was what I wanted. Wasn't looking for a time, I just wanted to see if I could train hard and get around 😊 it was awesome!
well done I am still trying to increase my marathon times, mid 40s I stand at 3:20 at moment, working on more speed now, next marathon is May for Ottawa so I know I have some time, just wondering if its still possible to improve
What a lovely video, more power to you… you are such a genuine person … and my favourite running RUclipsr and fellow Greenwich neighbour, all the best for your races in 2024 🎉
Looking forward to my 100 miler after my stroke last year .. and possibly a 200 miler in the future.. I’m 55 this year and still running 20 min parkrun … love it 🥰
No S&C? I'm running my 1st marathon at Manchester this April at 59 years young. Using your L3 plan & luckily got 2 run partners for weekend long runs as we simular pace & using same plan
Very inspiring Ben keep on enlightening us it definitely helps. Did Valencia 23 as well and Was hoping 2h50, managed a disappointing 2h55 , guess I need mental preparation coach , any advice?
2 bagels with peanut butter and jam is absolutely ideal, I usually have 1 about 45 mins before any run daily ...so 2 2 hours prior sounds spot on, will follow for long runs in prep for brighton marathon! can't wait!!
Great video Ben, so comprehensive! I’m hoping to go sub-3 in the marathon this year and have even started my own channel to document my training 🫣 Also largely plant-based so will be looking up those books! One I can recommend (just in case you don’t have it!) is The Vegan Athlete’s Cookbook by Anita Bean. It’s a go-to! Keep at it, will enjoy following your journey this year ❤
Ben you revealed what a lot of guys know to be true - and that is that the Gel Nimbus is the best recovery shoe out there. I used the Nimbus the past 3 versions and the ride has me totally spoiled. It out-Hokas the Hoka. I use the NovaBlast (both road and trail versions) for speed and tempo but the Nimbus is the shoe to tick off easy k's in. Cheers and thanks
Great video Ben. Loved the mindset section. This year my goal race is Race to the Stones 100k, I'm planning 2 "no pressue" 50k races before then, just to get me in the zone as you did with NY and Chicago. P.S. I turn 50 this year.
Turning 50 next month. Just started last year, targeting half marathon at 2:20 (which is Bens 42K). All the tips help benchmark, but to achieve the weekly training miles i’d have to quit my job.
I also turned 40 last year and it bothered me. Always Great seeing a new Video from you popping up. Ill run my First Marathon in about 6 months. Your Vids are amazing to Watch every now and then.
Love this video. I've turned 40 recently too and I've found myself in a real rocky injury prone patch for the last 18 months which I think I'm on the other side of now. So encouraging to hear have you boiled it back down to the basics more or less. I really appreciate your honesty in these types videos. Keep it up😃
Super pumped for you man. You've put in some hard work, in and out of running, and it certainly shows!
It's so good to see you back on form, Ben!
Currently following my fourth training plan of yours in prep for Manchester marathon :) 👊 your training plans are rock solid and have got me a PB every time

I’m trying to up my own mileage for the next one - currently at 80 km 50 mi/week.
Congratulations Ben 🥳
Bought 2 of your plans and got 2 PB’s 🏃🏻💨
Also just bought (Int.3)☺ plan and looking forward to getting a new PB.
Lovely video Ben, huge kudos to you
Fantastic stuff Ben!! Taking inspiration from all of this 🙏
4:43 I've finally made it into a BP video. Thank you for helping me achieve sub 3 at London Marathon 2023.
Nice video Ben, love your honesty and even though it's nobody's business I appreciate that you feel you can speak openly. Keep you amazing content coming and really looking forward to the year ahead, thanks Ben and Sarah❤
What a wonderful video Ben: so uplifting and motivating, exactly what is needed to help fight off the January blues, thank you! 👍
Hi Ben, another great video by you & Sarah👍🏻
I’m 50 in a few weeks, took up running 1 year ago and still loving it, always improving. First marathon in May(Edinburgh) can’t wait, hoping for sub 3.30💪
2.25 for you again - no problem

Great video, thanks for sharing Ben!
Good stuff. Top man. Keep the quality content coming.
I have to say you look so much younger than 40!
Many congratulations on your awesome time Ben!

Hard work pays off ,well done Ben , great achievements...
I'm going for sub 3:20 in 6weeks ,my biggest goal is a sub 3 marathon at end of the year.
Great job Ben! What an amazing inspirational video:) Keep doing what matters
You are top-notch! I'm am so happy for you!
You’re an inspiration. Stay strong, Ben.
Hello ben! Thank you for inspiration! 🇬🇧❤️ Hello again from newbury 😁
Great video, your comment re nutrition and reconnecting with food really resonated with me and I’ve made it a new year’s resolution to do the same 😊
Love what you do! Thankyou for making me realise i can marathon run too! Well as long as i do the work of cause... your awesome love your videos

Great video Ben and great choice of album 👍🏼
Heh Ben
Glad to see you up and at it and keeping the chin up as ive told you, your the man.
Got my first marathon in april so training at the mo using your plan.
Keep up the great work Ben 👍
Great to have a goal and live up to it. My goal was 2.30 half marathon at age 68, and did 2.28. I am delighted and will keep improving….
Love the content! Keep the Fire Burning 🔥! Peace and luv!
Great stuff Ben. I have started doing Park Runs since the start of this year thanks to your advice in previous videos. 👍
well done I am still trying to increase my marathon times, mid 40s I stand at 3:20 at moment, working on more speed now, next marathon is May for Ottawa so I know I have some time, just wondering if its still possible to improve
Love this video. Totally relate to the mental health stuff.
Ben you are an inspiration, keep up the great work!
What a lovely video, more power to you… you are such a genuine person … and my favourite running RUclipsr and fellow Greenwich neighbour, all the best for your races in 2024 🎉
Great content. Looking to go more plant based. Will look at those books.
Looking forward to my 100 miler after my stroke last year .. and possibly a 200 miler in the future.. I’m 55 this year and still running 20 min parkrun … love it 🥰
Please train us I need to hit at least 2:50 a marathon
No S&C? I'm running my 1st marathon at Manchester this April at 59 years young. Using your L3 plan & luckily got 2 run partners for weekend long runs as we simular pace & using same plan
Cried with you at the marathon finish, what a journey. ❤ For me, I'm aiming for a sub 21 5k a sub 74 20 mile and to get through the year injury free.
Very inspiring Ben keep on enlightening us it definitely helps. Did Valencia 23 as well and Was hoping 2h50, managed a disappointing 2h55 , guess I need mental preparation coach , any advice?
Great video, thanks Ben
I’m old and heavy so rely on cross training and weight training to keep me running. Hoping to PB at Manchester in April.
2 bagels with peanut butter and jam is absolutely ideal, I usually have 1 about 45 mins before any run daily ...so 2 2 hours prior sounds spot on, will follow for long runs in prep for brighton marathon! can't wait!!
Congratulations again!
Keep at it, will enjoy following your journey this year ❤
Love this! Hoping to do Chicago next year, did New York last year, almost killed me! 😅 Training for Paris Marathon currently. 💪
Fantastic video!!!!
Thanks a lot for sharing bro 👍👍
Ben, you’ve definitely got talent 😂 interesting to see, and backs up that mileage / volume is a key indicator of performance in the marathon
