I bought the 72 set when it hadn't been out long and I loved them so much that I bought the 120 set as soon as it was released, I'm happy to say that they've now added numbers and colours to identify the pencils, my 72 set has no identification, and my 120 just has numbers. I use these pencils a lot and I'm currently working on a colour along where the colourist is using Prismas and although I own Prismas I thought I'd use my Castle Art instead and so far I'm not having any trouble in matching the colours used by the colourist or making the shade I need by mixing the colours. For the price I think these pencils are excellent, and although I personally have never experienced any problems, by reputation their Customer Service is second to none, if you tell them about the pencils that have duplicated names, I'm sure they will sort it out for you. Just one thing........ If you own the 120 set, you don't need the extra 'specialist' sets ie Portrait, Botanical, Seascape etc.. as all the colours are in the 120 set already, there are no new shades included.
I brought the set of 120 pencils back in November last year and I absolutely love them. I can't afford to buy the high end pencils and I brought these when they were on offer, they were around £28 at the time. I love how bright the colours are, they're very vibrant like you said. I use them for drawing as well as colouring and they always look fab. In my opinion these are perfect for someone like myself who hasn't got the funds to buy the high end pencils. It's great to see you do a review of them, I've been looking around RUclips to see if anybody had and was really happy to see your review and hear how much you like them too. I've not tried any of their other products yet, do you plan to try some in the future? Thanks again ❤
I was looking for good quality pencils that weren't as expensive as prismacolor. Thank you for this video, now I know the perfect quality cheaper pencils.
I have these pencils. I also have complete large sets of Prismacolor, Polychromos, Arteza, and smaller sets of miscellaneous brands of pencils. The Castle Art pencils are surprisingly nice, despite being considerably less costly than the other two major brands, and perform equally well. Their leads are creamy, yet strong, and do blend quite well. But, like you say, swatching IS a must; barrel dipped color ends are NOT true to lead colors. Castle Art colored pencils are ‘keepers’ for me.
I love my set of 120. They work really nice on the "Nice Little Town" book as well as other books that have similar paper. I have a couple of duplicates as well. Claire is spot on with the yellows and browns. I also wish they had a egg shell, cream and sand colors. I can use my prismas or crayolas with no problems adding to castle art pencils. All in all a really nice set that I use a lot!
I found these pencils difficult to work with and sharpen - unless I got a bad batch. I've got the Arteza 120 instead which I much prefer as a cheaper dupe for my polychromos set. However, prismacolor are hard to beat - they're my favourite x
I had the Castle art 72 set before there were names or even numbers on the pencils. I really liked them. I used up ALL the good colors and gave away the rest of them, thinking, "Oh, I got my prismas, I won't miss those." But I do miss them! They weren't the best pencils, but I liked them a lot and I want to get a new set. If only they hadn't jacked the price up so drastically
I love my Castle Arts set, I've had them for months and not had any issues. I use a helical sharpener which seems to work better for them than a normal blade one. I had the two Mauve Deeps in my set and, like you, discovered that one should be Aubergine and was a printing error.
I am really pleased with mine - I'd love to see you do a few more videos using these pencils as most people use Polys or Prismas and it's a struggle trying to match up the colours! I enjoyed the one that you have done so please, give me some more... Thanks Claire.
Thank you Claire! I’ve had my eye on these and I love your review, which was thorough and to the point. I do reviews of art supplies myself but as busy as I am, sometimes I don’t have time for an extensive review that may take 20-30 minutes. I know that’s contradictory but I could also end up binging RUclips reviews if I don’t watch myself. You have a lovely channel. I ordered the Van Gogh and Boticelli set, which were more for novelty but a great way to check the brand out. Right now on Amazon US they are 35-45 US dollars, and you can’t beat that price for the quality they are. Thank you again!
I have the 120 set - did a review too. I really enjoy them, especially when I consider how cheap they were. There were some scratchy ones for sure, but overall they aren't bad. I didn't have the double print issue like yours though! That sucks! I know the older sets had no names/identification, because I had seen past reviews with them, so I'm super glad they added those names. I love the flower you end up doing with these though - I'm going to try it!
I've had mine for a few months now. I really like them. I also heard others getting a couple of the same pencils in there sets ,I'm lucky I didn't come across that. Thanks for sharing! 😉 💖!
great review - thanks - will get this for my 8 year old daughter who is turning out to be an avid artist :) also i hope it will help her build up her organisational skills as she seems happy to want to keep one of her latest art material acquirements organised and safe in their original boxes !! hurray !
I got Fabel Castell Classic 60-set and castle art 120-set. I love the castle art more than the other one, I don't need to have much pressure while coloring.
I just bought the 120 set, I had already bought the 72 piece set, and agree with all you said about these pencils, a bit pricey, but nice solid coloring. Husband has the same sets and loves his too!!! Thanks for your opinions, they really do help!
Any tips on blending these specifically? Just bought the 120 set as a lot of reviewers had said how creamy and blendable they are, but I'm struggling a little. Most likely my technique! There are some lovely colours. I treated myself to Johanna Basford World of Flowers and couldn't resist Maria Trolle Twilight Garden at the same time, but anxious to start anything in case I make mess of it because I can't blend properly!! I've just watched your blending tutorial for wax and oil pencils, so I'm assuming, as these are wax-based, I need to have medium pressure to start and then get a bit lighter, and then add the next colour over that blend line? Thanks
They look beautiful!! Like the shine you got from the flower 🌸 I have Prisma colors and the Faber Castell both in the full set. But, they do look yummy!
Thank you for the video. I bought them . The first pencil that you use to colour the flower is the numero 27 ( Aubergine ) not the mauve deep ( the numero 90 ). It's the error in your castle arts box.
Gorgeous!! Thanks so much Claire - I'm going to dig out my set that I got perhaps a year ago, but when they didn't have names. I swatched them, using the numbers, and names Dea Lenihan made up for them. Thanks for the inspiration 😁🙏. And yay! I see you've done a video on how you coloured that beautiful flower 🌸
I personally feel like they are very difficult to blend. Especially not between drastic changes in hue. Am I just doing the technique wrong? I’m not very experienced with colored pencils
I have a set of 72, overall they are nice pencils but I find that some colours fade pretty quickly means they are not lightfast and some colours are hard to blend.
Thanks for this review. I have a bunch of Castle Art pencils (I actually have just about every brand to some extent) and like them pretty well. How do the Castle Art “Gold” pencils differ?
I just bought the 72 premium soft touch and I am having second thoughts on that. I noticed that they are harder to blend and much lighter compared to prisma. Even if I apply gamsol after and re-applying color does not make it any darker. There are so many good reviews on Castle art but I wonder if it’s just me. Can you tell me if it’s worth getting it without comparing it to Prisma? I want to hear your input. Pls. Thank you.
I love my polychromos, but I decided to branch out and try a new pencil range. Castle Arts are nice, but they are softer than polychromos so they will need sharpening more often x
Hello, Claire! Thanks for the review! I was gifted this set to my great surprise and have no prior experience with drawing or coloring. Can I ask you how/if you are supposed to use a brush and water at any point in the coloring process? I'm confused about that because the pencils came with watercolorpaper and a brush. Kind Regards
0:13 You have a beautiful background of pink and yellow flowers in parts of your video starting at this point. Is the background a table cloth or a coloring page that you did? If it's a coloring page, do you have a video specifically for that one? I'd love to see it.
I got these and after I sharpened about 10 of them my 'beast' of an electric pencil sharpener was struggling. When I say that thing is a beast, I mean it sharpens pencils with the kind of strength that you'd expect out of a Mac Truck. So, that's some cheap wood. It's probably the same junk they use to make the Crayola pencils, which is SO bad that I won't use my good sharpener on them.
Claire, I agree with your summary. These are nice pencils for the most part. I had no trouble with duplicate names. I only had trouble with some of the color barrels not matching the color. Like you, I took the time to swatch and found some very similar colors. Place of manufacture: ... as far as I can tell, these are made in China.
Thanks for a good review. I just got these pencils and noticed the duplicate names of Mauve Deep are actually printed inside the tin cover as it is intentional. I thought I heard somewhere that the more pink color is American, and the more blue of the two is English. Not sure if that’s true-maybe you know?
Shaniquazzz I like them They are like my Blick Studio pencils. They are not soft, but they blend and layer really well. I also love all the pinks and purples. I have lots of browns in my Prismas set so don’t miss them here.
What an awesome review that didn’t take 30 mins to watch. I’d really love it if you could did a comparison review video against Arteza 120 set vs Castle 120 set.
Im thinking of buying either these or Arteza. If I like a softer kind of a pencil, more like prismacolors, which would u recomend? Thanks for sharing all ur talent!
I think these are a bit softer than Arteza but nowhere near as soft as Prismas. The only pencils that come close to Prisma softness imo is the Caran D'Ache Luminance, and maybe the new Posca pencils. Both are highly priced though. If you're looking to choose between Castle and Arteza, it's close, but I'd go Castle 👍
I've had the Castlke 120 set which I've given to my daughter. I have now got the Arteza set which I love as they're similar to the Polychromos pencils x

Short and precise. Thanks Claire.
Thank you, it took hours of prep to do (colouring the flower alone took 58 minutes) but edits down into 4 mins 😅 xx
@@ColourwithClaire It definitely was worth it. I expanded the flower on IG and tried to figure out how you'd done it for my next flower picture 😊.
I'm going to upload the full 58 minute real-time video so you can colour along with me x
@@ColourwithClaire Yeah. Thank you.
I brought the 72 pack and I love them. They are one of my favourite pencils after my prismacolor pencils. Great review as usual.
How about the lighfastness of these pencils?
Your video is the shortest, yet the smoothest and most informative video I've watched abouth these pencils. It helped, thank you.

The first pencil I picked up from the tin was broken and once I had sharpened it, it had shrunk in size by half. Absolutely awful ...

If you open up the pamphlet with their products, you’ll find a color chart for the pencils. It’s the one that says universal color system,
