I have a 2004 xterra and just changed the radiator following your instructions to the letter. This thing is running like a champ now. I asked a mechanic how much he would charge me and he was asking $180 😳😱. Thank you SO MUCH for making this video for us. God will truly bless you for it 😊

Stupidly easy on a 2002 Naturally Aspirated 3.3L V6. Since I have a manual transmission it was even easier - no transmission lines to disconnect/reconnect. I put in a radiator for an automatic because I got one for $60 on RockAuto. The ports where the transmission lines would hook up came with plugs on them (not that it would matter - they form an isolated loop in the radiator.)
Also, no need to remove the battery. I did remove the coolant overflow reservoir, but mostly because I also replaced the overflow hose. The radiator fill funnel worked great, as well. I got one with a little ball valve on it instead of the plug on a handle, but it’s the same concept.
Pretty sure it took me longer to watch the video than to do the work, which is NEVER usually the case. Basically everything else I have had to do on this thing has taken 2-3x longer than I think, because between Nissan making some stupid decisions on a lot of things & me being an idiot, well…
Thank you for the walkthrough! It made this an absolute breeze. I probably could have kept rocking my JB Weld patch on the upper plastic housing for months or years, but with how cheap radiators are for these, it gives me peace of mind to know it won’t become a problem again down the line. Replaced my NA 2002 Xterra radiator 2 years ago. I found a cheapy on Amazon for $70. Haven't had any problems with it in the last two years. I imagine most of these original radiators are leaking by now if they are 20 years old.
just bought a 2003 xe 3.3 liter garage kept with just 103,000 miles on it. can smell a light bit of cooler when running. overflow tank was empty. going to install a new radiator, hoses and everything. I love these trucks and wish Nissan would bring them back. such a great truck and so minimal.
@@eddaniels9880 looks like running new hoses isn't a bad idea if already doing the radiator. I might just go for that as well while I'm in there!
Nice, most detailed video I've found. I have a 2003 Xterra with about 1 and half hairline crack. Patched with JB Weld 2 years ago and was doing fine, until today I'd noticed it is leaking again on the same spot. Going to try the JB Weld again and if it is not work this time, gonna have to get me a new rad. Asked 2 mechanic shops one wanted to charge $400 and the 2nd one wanted to charged $580. Going to attempt this myself if my first plan failed. Thanks for the video.
Updated 4/30/23: Finally done this on my 2003 Nissan Xterra 4x4, no supercharge. Pretty simple with this model, there is no way to disassemble the bottom shroud. Just one piece, easy a lot of room, just pull out the radiator when all the bolts and hoses are out and disconnected. BTW, the coolant funnel from Amazon is so worth it. Makes the job so so much easy to take out the air from the radiator. So glad I'd bought it when I'd ordered my radiator from Amazon. Thank you bro, saved me so much money. 🤙

Thank you for this video. Solid detail and just the right information. Going to get after it this weekend! Next is removing the intake manifold (kinda worried about that) to replace that cruddy valve cover gasket. May do spark plugs while I'm in there! Cheers.

The radiator you’re using to replace the old one. Will that prevent the SMOD from happening? Is that only an issue with the factory radiator?

Hey this was very helpful I just changed mine, I don’t have the fancy funnel but my radiator is full and I didn’t see liquid come out of the breather port. Do you think lines could be clogged or should I wait a bit for airflow to push it up ?
I think as long as your aren't overheating it should mean you don't have any air trapped in the system. Id maybe drive it a little bit and monitor your temperature gauge. The funnels are pretty cheap on Amazon and an easy way to make sure there are no bubbles
Ive always taped a the end of a bottle and place in the rad , it should create a good enough seal to do the job, never had any issues
Quick question do i got to turn on the heat ? I dont have heat at the moment and i really wanna replace the radiator
It'll help purge the system of air, since bubbles get stuck in the heater core
You can fit the R34 radiator in the Xterra it's a 3 row. Better upgrade.

I could do that. I have done it once before and it was a pain. I broke a few of the clips

Just a habit. I never had one for so long so some times I just go for the old school ratchet without thinking.

I didn't. But depending on how much drips out you might want to check the level and add a bit
Is this a manual or automatic transmission? I am about to order this specific radiator but I'm worried about compatibility. Im guessing they it works in both but maybe has some plugs in certain spots where the lines would go to an automatic?
How do you know the difference between the supercharged and regular radiator? Like the specs to differentiate? I replaced w the standard one but it starts to get hot on long steep grades especially during summer on was wondering if the supercharged would keep it cool. Let me know thanks 🙏🏼
The supercharged radiator has a thicker core. If you follow the link in the description it should take you to the right radiator. Or if you ask a parts store for one for a supercharged model it should be the thicker core.

yes but this is the easiest way to do it. Very cheap to find on amazon
I just did this to my 2000 frontier and it started before I did this but i started it before I aired out the cooling system and since I had some coolant that I had put in about 2 months ago I decided to keep it in. Once I let the air come out it should crank up correct?
