Has nothing to do with the battery. Look at the blast, no smoke, very loud (people covering their ears) and obviously high velocity explosive because of the noise. Has all the hallmarks of PETN. Could be Detasheet in a small quantity. Possibly a set timer used to trigger the pagers all at the same time. It was in a way very low tech and very clever. Just a side note I have 40 years dealing with explosives.
I am old and had a pager. They are pre-tuned FM recievers and a cheap cup to detect the tones of that pager number. It would be simple if it has only one extra input/output line to reprogram it that between the code for it's message and the end tone for end of message that any ASCII code or set of ASCII could trigger a single transistor/FET to detonate. It could be that simple and every one of the pagers out there could already be compromised prior to being sold/distributed.

The battery would still function as a power source with only half the volume as a conventional battery but requiring more frequent charging which the user would tolerate for a while. The rf chip would be waiting for a signal to set the detonator off with a sub routine in its software where the victim presses the the power to acknowledge the text or failing that a time lapse of so many seconds after receiving the message signal.

About 10--15 years ago, I treated a patient who was testing a B-cell (slightly larger than AA) lithium battery. He explained that the wire connected to the positive end accidentally dropped and contacted the negative side, resulting in a short and explosion. He presented with shrapnel and burn damage to his face and upper body. His glasses (thankfully he was wearing them) were damaged with dozens of burn/impact marks. His eyebrows were burned-off, and his beard and hair was burned. All the medics (some of us were fire investigators, too) were shocked at the severity of the injuries caused. Frankly, I think the damage potential from lithium batteries is being suppressed. I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I've seen the results with my own eyes. Good quality lithium batteries, with the proper charge regulation devices, are very useful. However, people need to be cautious and use common sense with these devices. They can be very destructive, and are difficult to extinguish if they ignite.

It's true that some BMSs can have their charge rate changed by software. However, some can only be set in hardware, requiring modification. In any case, the charge rate can only be increased by 2-3x, which is enough to heat and degrade the cell but unlikely to explode it. Overcharging in time is also possible but again limited in effect. This is because the power supply providing the charge power is limited too. Consider also that it's only the CHARGE rate that can be increased - the pagers that exploded were in use, not on charge. In brief, this is not viable for the pagers, but may be viable for high-powered battery systems such as power inverter/standby systems. The only system I can think of that has both a network connection and a relatively large battery is a laptop.

From a Prepper perspective ? If batteries can be sabotaged to explode then there is no way the US does not know about this. Any communication device with these batteries could be vulnerable. If the government take against you you can be targetted , indivdually or on mass. Agree on the BMS issue. Were earlier EV fires etc proof of concept/trial runs ? It is near impossible to function without devices these days unless you use cash - is the move to digital designed to eliminate this safeguard ? Many questions that need an authoritative and independent answer by public inquiry. We should be concerned.

I seen this story earlier and was thinking it was odd because of the videos of vape mods exploding in peoples pockets with 1 or 2 18650 lithium rechargeables would usually cause severe burns but nobody died from them.

I have had a lithium laptop battery explode on first charge it blew the end off which buried itself in the plasterboard wall but I doubt if a small phone battery could do the sort of damage being claimed, I think it is more likely a concealed explosive was used..
I have three lithium battery generators you know power Oak / swavey / and a none branded one. Plus lithium batteries in my head torches. All made in China, no problems so far & I can store around 2240 Wh combined from my solar panels on the roof. Looking to buy a much bigger one soon around 3000 Wh in one unit as they give a much bigger punch

Remember people, these pagers had been in service for a long time. They had not randomly exploded when these people were using them for their (possibly nefarious) use cases. They only exploded when someone who had all the cell numbers sent a specific message to them almost at the same time, or they picked up a radio signal somehow to trigger. Either way we are talking a long ploy to get these units altered, and in the hands of the targets.
That would be a huge battery for a pager. 20 years ago, pagers were only about 1/2" thick, that cell's 16mm. It's also in a metal can - a pager battery would be in a 'prismatic' package like the one in a cellphone. The soft sides make it harder for it to explode, as it swell more gently. It can still burn but no chance of shrapnel.
I was soldering a wire onto a small watch battery for my welding helmet and the battery exploded in my face. It didn’t even take much heat. I wasn’t even at the temperature where the solder would melt yet it didn’t catch fire didn’t vent gas. It just exploded a little watch battery, and it had a lot of power
The energy contained does nothing to reveal how many moles of gas are produced and how quickly they are produced. You can burn C4 and not necessarily provoke a rapid gas release.
The 'electronic warfare' theory is not that they put out a frequency to excite the battery. It's that a software caused the battery to overheat / explode. That is very plausible but would result in fire more than a clean explosion.

This was t thermal runaway of lithium batteries! Even deliberately. Modern b*mbs are often detonated by mobile phones, or a pager. Add a few parts including a small amount of high explosive. Ring the phone/pager to detonate. These all happened at the same time, like a call centre sends out a group call.

the bms can be hacked is correct but a fuse that is close to the total carrying cap of the battery pack can be limited by a simple fuse on the output.........ergo the max current that is safe for the cells. I am not an expert but I am pretty knowlegable

More over all the pages suffering the same failure almost less possible then the battery blowing up so violently once. Imo, pagers had been tampered with. Many people dont realize pagers are still widely used today, mostly in hospitals and such but overseas used nuch more commonly.
Could a doctored capacitor have been the cause. If these are overpowered they heat up quickly turning the liquid electrolyte to gas which can cause them to explode. These normally have a weak point to allow a controlled pressure release, but if that was missing or faked, a bigger reaction would likely occur. They also wouldn't look out of place on the circuit board.
I would think other devices also. Would have exploded. That was using lithium batteries. In the vicinity of the pagers. And maybe they did. I haven't heard it though. They was tampered with in my opinion.

I did some math, I found lithium batteries in this size range contain the energy of 2-8 12 gauge birdshot shells. Some of these cell phone batteries are more energy dense than that 2.59Wh battery you showed.
Energy density isn't the whole story. 1 gram of candle wax (42 kJ/g) contains 10.5 times the energy of 1 gram of TNT (4 kJ/g). The difference is the TNT can liberate all it's energy instantly creating a shock wave. The candle wax cannot.
Last pager I had about a quarter century ago had plenty of room around buttons to allow gas to escape or more accurately let water in a ruin the pager!

Nonetheless, any aluminum in the pager for shielding a component could be "excited" by a particular frequency to set off a chain reaction

Someone could potentially hack a smart BMS and change parameters and other things. But the BMS is controlling the negative bus of battery to negative terminal. Only one tiny positive balance lead on the BMS. So not a real short circuit potential per say. Self heating batteries this would be more plausible. But on the small battery like electronics use usually there isn’t a BMS. this comes to play on multi cell batteries.
It seems like to me the sure way to accelerate the over pressure event is to use a titanium or strong enclosure sealed. Then no one sees the smoke and and the overpressure happens very quickly! The internal pressure feeds the burn rate. It seems like someone built a custom set of batteries for those pagers….this reminds me of past creative solutions to manage technology by introducing the STUCKS VIRUS to centrifuges…
That assumes that the caps are fully charged. Also, what makes the cap explode is not the electricity but heat that causes the electrolyte to vaporize. 1g of dirt has just as much energy as 1g of pee which has just as much energy as 1g of tnt (e = mc^2). Clearly it was some sort of explosive which was used indiscriminately. Likely most of the victims were not even "terrorists"(it should be obvious who the real terrorists are). Some kid playing with the pager, or just standing next to some guy, or given to him by his parents for schooling, etc. Genocides are pretty easy to commit when you have half the world believe you are the chosen ones when you are actually Satan's hell spawn. The Pagers have been identified as "Apollo AP-9000" encryted pagers. They run on a single AAA battery.

Remember people, these pagers had been in service for a long time. They had not randomly exploded when these people were using them for their (possibly nefarious) use cases.
They only exploded when someone who had all the cell numbers sent a specific message to them almost at the same time, or they picked up a radio signal somehow to trigger.
Either way we are talking a long ploy to get these units altered, and in the hands of the targets.

That would be a huge battery for a pager. 20 years ago, pagers were only about 1/2" thick, that cell's 16mm. It's also in a metal can - a pager battery would be in a 'prismatic' package like the one in a cellphone. The soft sides make it harder for it to explode, as it swell more gently. It can still burn but no chance of shrapnel.

Maybe they manufactured batteries without vent holes and thicker casing. More than likely they just planted actual plastic explosives though.
Plastic explosive has much more energy per gram than LiPo cell.
I’ve got 10 year old 18650’s that still hold a good charge and all my 1-3 year old batteries are crapping out all the time. No burn ups so far

I was soldering a wire onto a small watch battery for my welding helmet and the battery exploded in my face. It didn’t even take much heat. I wasn’t even at the temperature where the solder would melt yet it didn’t catch fire didn’t vent gas. It just exploded a little watch battery, and it had a lot of power
I fast forwarded to see if he blew up a battery once I didn’t see him blow up the battery.

I heard pagers were from Taiwan, so its likely the booby trap was built in by order of US.
The energy contained does nothing to reveal how many moles of gas are produced and how quickly they are produced. You can burn C4 and not necessarily provoke a rapid gas release.

The 'electronic warfare' theory is not that they put out a frequency to excite the battery.
It's that a software caused the battery to overheat / explode.
That is very plausible but would result in fire more than a clean explosion.

This was t thermal runaway of lithium batteries! Even deliberately. Modern b*mbs are often detonated by mobile phones, or a pager. Add a few parts including a small amount of high explosive. Ring the phone/pager to detonate. These all happened at the same time, like a call centre sends out a group call.
I have a feeling a lot of the products from TikTok and Amazon have explosives in them!
Those pagers were sold modified to them with a penny size c4 or Rdx packet with a little electronics and entering the right phone number and boom

Wow thank you for putting this video up. I am curious if there was flat cell. But I think it is more likely there was sabotage from the factory. Regardless it is definitely something to think about with cell phones and devices connected to the internet, Bluetooth, and cell towers.

Yes, regular batteries have safeguards, but these pagers were intercepted and tampered with. The explosions happened in a variety of areas so the EW theory seems implausible.
Anything could have been done to the pagers. As some viewers are commenting and some news stories are further developing it appears that they were equipped with some type of dedicated explosive agent. Still a developing news story and still conflicting information out there
Pagers use regular AA or AAA batteries not lithium. They were old school beepers and were booby trapped to blow up

the bms can be hacked is correct but a fuse that is close to the total carrying cap of the battery pack can be limited by a simple fuse on the output.........ergo the max current that is safe for the cells. I am not an expert but I am pretty knowlegable
Is it possible a battery could cause this type of explosion, very low. However possible. More over all the pages suffering the same failure almost less possible then the battery blowing up so violently once. Imo, pagers had been tampered with. Many people dont realize pagers are still widely used today, mostly in hospitals and such but overseas used nuch more commonly.
Could a doctored capacitor have been the cause. If these are overpowered they heat up quickly turning the liquid electrolyte to gas which can cause them to explode. These normally have a weak point to allow a controlled pressure release, but if that was missing or faked, a bigger reaction would likely occur. They also wouldn't look out of place on the circuit board.
I would think other devices also. Would have exploded. That was using lithium batteries. In the vicinity of the pagers. And maybe they did. I haven't heard it though. They was tampered with in my opinion.

Not 800 continuous lol competition subwoofers draw enormous amounts of energy for a split second/seconds during decibel competitions. Look at some of the stuff audio guys do with the cells!

I’ve seen videos of EV cars and bikes that smoked for a while then caught fire. The problem with EV cars is the doors and windows may not work when this is happening.

I did some math, I found lithium batteries in this size range contain the energy of 2-8 12 gauge birdshot shells. Some of these cell phone batteries are more energy dense than that 2.59Wh battery you showed.
Energy density isn't the whole story. 1 gram of candle wax (42 kJ/g) contains 10.5 times the energy of 1 gram of TNT (4 kJ/g). The difference is the TNT can liberate all it's energy instantly creating a shock wave. The candle wax cannot.

Last pager I had about a quarter century ago had plenty of room around buttons to allow gas to escape or more accurately let water in a ruin the pager!

I just heard a guy took his battery off his ebike and it exploded and he died.
There's a video of it. It was in China. He was in an elevator when it exploded. He couldn't get away. He died of burns a few days later.

You are correct as to Faraday cage phenom "Faraday cages work because an external electrical field will cause the electric charges within the cage's conducting material to be distributed in a way that cancels out the field's effect inside the cage." Nonetheless, any aluminum in the pager for shielding a component could be "excited" by a particular frequency to set off a chain reaction

One component within the electronics shielded by aluminum as a standard part of its construction design could be exploited by a discovered microwave frequency is what I am saying - I understand the pagers were/are Motorola - don't know any more than that at this moment

Someone could potentially hack a smart BMS and change parameters and other things. But the BMS is controlling the negative bus of battery to negative terminal. Only one tiny positive balance lead on the BMS. So not a real short circuit potential per say. Self heating batteries this would be more plausible.
But on the small battery like electronics use usually there isn’t a BMS. this comes to play on multi cell batteries.
Short out the battery in a contained space like a Pager case.

It seems like to me the sure way to accelerate the over pressure event is to use a titanium or strong enclosure sealed.
Then no one sees the smoke and and the overpressure happens very quickly! The internal pressure feeds the burn rate.
It seems like someone built a custom set of batteries for those pagers….this reminds me of past creative solutions to manage technology by introducing the STUCKS VIRUS to centrifuges…

That assumes that the caps are fully charged. Also, what makes the cap explode is not the electricity but heat that causes the electrolyte to vaporize. 1g of dirt has just as much energy as 1g of pee which has just as much energy as 1g of tnt (e = mc^2).
Clearly it was some sort of explosive which was used indiscriminately. Likely most of the victims were not even "terrorists"(it should be obvious who the real terrorists are). Some kid playing with the pager, or just standing next to some guy, or given to him by his parents for schooling, etc. Genocides are pretty easy to commit when you have half the world believe you are the chosen ones when you are actually Satan's hell spawn. If anyone did 1/100th what the chosen ones were doing they would be labeled terrorists by the world.
